I’ve been playing for 35 years, and this is the first theory lesson I’ve understood since Mel Bay Book 1.
Playing the G D Em C with a variety of Root, first inversion, and second inversion is a quite satisfying. And the idea of practicing within this as a limitation makes it an exercise in mindfulness.
I also discovered about 3 fragments of Phish songs hiding in there. I can see immediately that they’re all there somewhere.
    Thank you.

I learned guitar by ear when I was younger, and it unfortunately hurt me as a musician. I never had a teacher to show me what I didn't know, so I was satisfied to play any song I heard and create by feel. I eventually realized that I was very limited, because I had no real understanding of how things fit together. Tomo has helped me map out how to rebuild my playing and thus be better at creating music. So grateful to him for being an inspired teacher, and for sharing it on the CZcams. Triads... who knew? This was a learning moment for me! Great show with Brett Papa incidentally! Lot over my head but I can understand the meaning of melody in notes. It's a pleasure watching you play so smoothly. That is something I practice and the spider walk exercise, I believe, helps being smooth. Playing single notes and holding the ringing note while striking the next, when possible adds a fulness I believe. I would like to see you do more on triads using the middle and top strings. Thank you so much. You are a good teacher.

This is exactly what I am wanting to learn on the guitar. I can play pretty much any chord on the piano, and I understand inversions very well. I know how to make a chord minor vs major. But the guitar, is like the freaking human genome! So, I am focusing on learning the fret board, and then I predict that I will FLY! Triads will be next. Can't wait. I completely agree that chord shapes are not as good as actually knowing the notes! Focusing on chord shapes is what brought me to my knees in the past. I would hit a road block because I couldn't play a certain shape and I didn't know where else on the fretboard that chord might live. Or how to add a 7th, or make it minor. SO EXCITED! I feel like i might finally learn to actually play the guitar!

Now, at 67, I finally understand it and it's significant because arthritis in my left hand fingers now prevent me from playing certain chords. I look forward to learning to play alternative fingerings for those chords. Thankful to Tomo for the lesson 👍😃

Nice lesson! I have been playing in bands for over 20 years in front of some pretty large crowds. But, not knowing all these triads means I have been trying to communicate with only a limited number of "words" to express myself. Like when learning mathematics, sometimes it is good to go back to basics and fill in the missing concepts.

We are lucky to be living in a time where there are so many resources to learn guitar, but the amount of information can also be overwhelming. This is the perfect example of a bite sized piece that is so important and fundamental, taught by a master player and teacher. I appreciate the patience and pace with which this is taught. I have learned something here. I need to practice it and build upon it, but I now have a foundation. I’ve been playing for a few years and I have a decent intermediate level of understanding regarding theory, but this really made sense and I now completely understand this very small part of playing guitar. Thank you for this Tomo. Your expertise is very much appreciated.

Tomo, your lessons (here and in Guitar Wisdom) is the one of best things that has happened to me in my musical journey. I've been playing the instrument for 15 years, and I was always frustrated about simply picking up tabs and not knowing what's going on musically (for eg, oh they switch from the fourth chord to a fifth). Trusting the process and just consistently practicing (even if its just 15 minutes everyday) has helped tremendously! I can SEE MORE now! You've lessons have literally changed my life. Onwards and upwards!

@@TomoFujitaMusic I am looking forward to such a lesson! I feel exactly the same like Wesley Du. Understanding theory is rather easy for me, not confusing at all. It's maths/logic, But when I learn this lesson, I can play triads in root position, 1st and 2nd inversion. When I play, is this really how to approach it? "Ok now I will play A triad second inversion. Next D triad root position etc." (key of A). What does sound valuable to me (pun intended) is to sing the notes you play. Being able to sing what you hear in your mind (assuming there is something you here) is the ultimate goal to me. But then it does not matter if the fifth is on top or 3rd, I play a *melody* (that happens to have theory behind, but it's not theory -> melody). Does that make sense? That's what is really confusing to me, not how you call theory elements. In any case I am really enjoying your lessons & I have the two Accelerate... DVDs at home. It is amazing how much you give to the community. Thanks!

A few take home points for me were:
    1. Root position is root, major 3rd, 5th
    2. First inversion is major 3rd, 5th, root
    3. Second inversion is 5th, root, major 3rd.
I also understood for example, the root position for the Cmaj chord is essentially part of the third fret C barre chord. Or the 1st inversion is part of the F-shaped C chord I play on the 8th fret. Also, I have recently been learning to play Dosed by RHCP and after this lesson I have a whole new appreciation of the Em and Dmaj triads John Frusciante is playing on the record.
