I have something to add here.
Don't treat the 20s sprint as the only part of the training.
The 40s off is ALSO TRAINING.
You are training your lungs to get more oxygen, you're training your heart to push that blood and O2 around, and you're training your muscles to accept it during rest periods. If you focus on breathing and staying present, your body will become better at recovering.

So much you can take from your content no matter what sport you play! I played soccer until my senior year of high school, I was showing some real promise as a distance runner as well during my time in high school and decided to pursue running full time. Even since then I have watched almost every video and just your mindset, how you approach challenges, and even things like the John Terry Cardio routine, your weight lifting routine, the way you take care of your body. All of these things can be applied to virtually any sport and even though I have left soccer behind in order to pursue a running career in college, really have loved all the advice and knowledge I’ve learned through your videos!

You could easily just keep all your drills to yourself and not show anyone your workouts, but you really care about player development so I don’t understand why people hate so much it astonishes me. I love your comment on individual training. I started soccer when I was 13, and did tons of individual training, whether it'd be dribbling, kicking the ball against the wall, imagine training with various drills. I jumped ahead of my friends who played since they were kids in technical ability only a year later. They even asked what soccer school I went to. In scrimmages, some friends say I run like I'm playing in the World Cup, and that I didn't need to do that. But it was an obsession for me. I'm happy when I have the ball at my feet, and I can chase it all day. If you love something, it never gets boring. Simple example is Cristiano Ronaldo doing all of these "silly" exercises (weighted ankles, constantly playing something, etc.) that all of his former teammates like Patrice Evra say he is crazy, but respectable crazy, and that he deserves to be where he is today. Do whatever crazy drills you want to do, better than doing none.

Great Video, a few tips on cardio. This type of training is called interval training. It is really excellent, but it s very very difficult. My point is that you can''t do this type of training day in day out. Your body will break down. If you want to make a routine I would do it like this. 3-4 times a week do a 15-30 minute cardio session where you run at 70% pace and pushed to a 70% breathing (breathing but not out of breath) and then hit some interval training (breathing will be 100% and you will feel like throwing up) every other week then you should see some strong results in 5-6 weeks.

Sadly my treadmill only goes up to 15 km/h, but hell - at the moment thats enough for me. The first time I did it I felt like I'd die after like 5 Sets. This is a great workout. I've been doing something like this for years. Learned it from pro coaches back in the day. Different versions though, a bit more adapted to soccer that the treadmill. If anyone is interested, I'll explain it below.
Both versions share the same interval concept.
Version 1: In a soccer field (or any place really), take half of it so it's a square(ish) of 50mx50m. Sprint for 50m, then turn and slowly jog 50m to the other corner before sprinting again. Please remember the jog is recovery, not actual running, so the speed shouldn't be higher than walking.
This could also be back and forth instead of running a square, but it's easier for the mind going around than back and forth for extended periods of time.
Version 2 (favorite version): You can go anywhere for a run, preferably a a park or a place where you can make very long runs without interruptions like crossing the street/stopping for traffic.
Sprint for 1 minute, and then slowly jog to recover for 2 minutes. Recovery jog shouldn't be faster than walking. I know sprinting for 1 minute is not realistic, but what it means is that you try to keep your top speed and stick to it as your speed decreases until you get to the minute and start to recover.
Perform these intervals for 20 minutes and work yourself up to 45 minutes, not more.
Basically the concept is to get your body used to recovering while jogging slowly, as you shouldn't be walking in a game anyways.
Active recovery is a big part of the game, and going to a complete stop doesn't exactly emulate what happens on the pitch.

This comment just made my day. I am not planning on being back in Portland until next offseason in November-Jan 2019, but next time you see me there shoot me an email (becomeelitesoccer@gmail.com) and I’ll plan a time to meet up with you and Ben at the MAC!
Thank you for all the kind words. This means so much to me. Very motivating.
And yeah, go during “off hours” haha 🙌🏼

Bro, I did this yesterday and I was dying. When I did, I didn’t realize how fast the speed was and i had to adapt quick: I didn’t get to do all 15, instead I did 10 to start off, and it was such a good workout. Im coming for your record of 20. Thanks for the tips on it.

Matt thank you for motivating me. When I do drills that people say are weird and not worth it, I get discouraged. But hearing a determined pro saying that it doesn’t matter really inspires me. So thank you.

Matt...I tried the terry work out today....and I couldn’t even get to the 4th set...at a point in my life I’ve always loved soccer...but I was just so over weight trying to play (280) and now I’m looking at my self at 182Lbs...and I feel as if I conquered the world...this literally put the appreciation a pro such as yourself deserves...but I sincerely thank you for sharing this work out of you and the legend...I really do thank you. Cheers bro.

Recently getting back into soccer my last year in college and I only lasted 5 sets on this workout but plan to get better! I feel like I've only focused on weights and overlooked cardio, and I'm sure many guys do who aren't as involved with a sport. Thanks for this!!

I have been doing these Individual Workouts Now for 2 Years or so and I Am a striker and havent worked on shooting At all And today I had a Eureka Moment and Remembered an Old Concerte Metal Football cage Near my house. I woke up at 7am And got the best Shooting and passing Session In And Cant wait Yo continue to Do those sessions. At the moment I dont see significant improvement in all areas But trust the Process and Follow Matt Sheldon! 👍

Sounds good Will! Shooting is essential for a striker, also remember to practice finishing and positioning, look at players like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer! Ole was not the best dribbler nor the player with a great amout of pace, but his shooting was out of this world! Please if you have any questions, then hit me up! Would love to help you with your soccer journey !

I just started to watch your CZcams channel from last year. And it make me learn a lot of things about soccer, I learn how to get my skill better and I learn what I need to get a scholarship and play soccer in the college from your video that you share from 3 years ago. Thank you for your information about how to go play in college and teach me how to become better players.

Matt, best overall body type to maintain for soccer? Muscular, Ronaldo de Lima/linebacker type vs. Endurance, Pele/Lance Armstrong type body? I'd love your feedback, thanks for the insights in this video by the way!
