  • Today, my travels take me to visit five cast member grave sites (in Southern California) from the 1966 original Star Trek TV show.
I visit the final resting places of:
Michael Ansara (Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills)
Gerald "Jerry" Ayers (Westwood Village Memorial Park)
George Clayton Johnson (Riverside National Cemetery)
Ricardo Montalban (Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City)
Leonard Nimoy (Hillside Memorial Park, Culver City)
I also remember those cast members and the creator of the show, who have no final resting place to visit:
    Majel Barrett
    James Doohan
    DeForest Kelley
    Victor Lundon
    Gene Roddenberry
    Grace Lee Whitney
Thanks for joining me on another nostalgic road trip down memory lane.

Love the original Star Trek, still watch the reruns! I was surprised that DeForest Kelley, "Dr. McCoy" was cremated, as he had joked in an interview in the 1990's that he thought the epitaph "He's dead, Jim" would be on his grave when he died, in reference to the line frequently used by his character on the many episodes where someone died. Also thought it would have been a nice touch for Leonard Nimoy's epitaph to include something like "He lived long, and prospered." Did not realize he was cremated, as his grave looks like a traditional one and he was of the Jewish faith, which I believe requires burial within 24 hours of death, didn't think they believed in cremation. Also, don't know where his final resting place will be or if there is already a marker there, but I heard that William Shatner has already left instructions for his epitaph to read "Beam me up, Scotty!" 88 years old and still working.

I'm like you, I love it when people have meaningful and especially clever epitaphs. I understand if a famous person wants to be cremated and scattered, but it's surprising that they don't at least have a memorial marker--with a memorable epitaph--somewhere where fans can visit. Thanks, ILS!

I had a t-shirt once......"he's dead, Jim. You grab his tricorder and I'll grab his wallet." It, along with the "Beam me up, Scotty. There's no intelligent life down here." were some of our oft quoted rejoinders. LOL.

I am an original Trekkie. I actually carried petitions around East Valley Elementary School and my neighborhood in Marietta Georgia when I was 9-years-old with my buddy Brian Sharples to keep NBC from cancelling Star Trek in 1967/68. My favorite Trek Star was Irish Canadian James "Scotty" Doohan.

Hi Steve ! Thanks for another fine, sensitive video. Ricardo Montalban was the epitome of suave. He was brought to this country by his older brother who was also an actor. His name escapes me right now, but he had a successful, long run in commercials as "Juan Valdez" the coffee bean selector/ expert for Maxwell House coffee I believe. I remember seeing Ricardo on a talk show many years ago talking about his older brother. He spoke about how his brother helped him deal with and get beyond any anti Hispanic bigotry he encountered. It was clear that his brother was a great man in his own right.

By the way.....we went to a convention in Orlando, and the kid with me got to ride up in the elevator with Martina Sirtis. (Sp). LOL Long time since then. The kid was all of about 14 at the time, and she nearly turned his head inside out. LOL. She was supposed to have checked in three hours earlier, got stuck in air traffic, and managed to sneak in the back way. LOL. The minute she showed up at her room security was all over her. LOL.

Steve, an interesting fact about James "Scotty" Doohan - he was a Canadian WW2 veteran whose unit landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. He was wounded multiple times, one which resulted in his right middle finger being shot off. Most 'Star Trek' fans didn't notice this because they deliberately hid his injury from the TV audience.

A nice touch covering George Clayton Johnson's grave. I didn't realize he was a WW2 veterans as my Dad was as well. A clue of other scrpteriterd from Trek who are gone are Theodore Sturgeon, and Jerry Sohl. I'm thinking Sohl was cremated, but am not sure. Don't know about Sturgeon (" Shore Leave").
Some sources indicate that a portion of Doohan,'s ashes have been placed on the Inter. Space Station;. hope it's true. He would have been pleased I expect.
I have heard that Nichelle Nichols was diagnosed with dementia in 2018, and has pretty much ceased all Trek related activities. She had a stroke several years ago I recall. William Shatner turned 90 this March, and presumably is the eldest surviving cast member

Oh lucky you. LOL. Jimmy was a lovely man. I have a picture of him with me wearing the movie uniform jacket, and his arm around me. LOL. He had to put down his drink to do it though. Oh to clarify ...I was wearing the uniform jacket. He was dressed casual. It was a Trek Con. LOL. I was in Starfleet the fan club, and we were doing complimentary security for the guest actors.

I spent time at George Clayton Johnson's home and he was very nice. I met Leonard Nimoy at KGO TV & we talked about being Jewish. I introduced Jimmy Doohan to his wife and spent time with him and met Grace Lee Whitney in 1990 and she was still gorgeous.

@@TheGraveyardChannel I forgot some others ( I was very sleepy last night ). At the convention where I met Grace Lee Whitney, there was Yvonne Craig and her beautiful sister; Julie Newmar; the actor who played Sub Commander Tal in The Enterprise Incident; and 2 actors who played in A Piece of The Action. - In the 1970's when my friend Charles Weiss ran the Federation Trading Post in Berkeley, Ca. George Takei was a guest. He took us all to dinner and had everyone wear name tags with George on it. I told him I had no need for such a name tag since my name is George. We both agreed that George was the BEST name, of course, and George was a wonderful host. And I met William Shatner when he was on tour for his record The Transformed Man at the old Emporium store in San Francisco. I saw a copy of Bow and Arrow magazine in the magazine area and it had an article with Shatner on the cover. I went over and gave him a copy and we had a nice chat about it and he autographed my copy. He said the publisher had not sent him his copy yet so he was glad to see it. Finally, I met De Forest Kelley when he was filming a movie and got him to autograph some lobby cards from House of Bamboo. - 4 non ST encounters were meeting Darrin McGavin when he was filming in front of my apartment building in San Francisco; Clint Eastwood came into my store to ask for directions to a Moroccan restaurant nearby and I walked him to the restaurant as some guy would not stop bugging him; and I worked on The Streets of San Francisco as an extra and got to talk to Karl Malden who was very nice and I also worked as an extra on The Towering Inferno and had a brief encounter with Irwin Allen as he came out of an office building on Sutter Street. I went to the local premiere for the film by invitation. - Sadly, my memorabilia was lost due to an incompetent storage manager who was always a month off and they sold 1/2 my property when I had to move when my apartments were converted to condos in 2001.

Cool video Steve. I love how you give the homage to the writers. Remember without writers there's no books no songs no TV no film no nothing.....! Don't forget Leonard Nimoy was also the voice of In Search Of. I used to love that show and I love how they have the reboot with the new guy who plays Spock in the film's. This was great Steve hope all is well thanks again...... keep them coming!

    A little bit of trivia:
When Ken Berry was serving in the Army, just before being discharged he asked his Sargent advice about becoming an actor. His sargent apparently gave him good advice because he wound up taking his own advice. The Sargeant's name: Leonard Nimoy.

Very humbling to see that no one person's life is more important than the next when it comes to their final resting place. I was expecting Nimoy to have a massive monument but I guess their legacy is the real monument.
