I remember seeing this when I was about 12 years old. I had fallen asleep earlier & just woken up after midnight and it was playing on some 'Movies after Midnight' program on channel 4. Back when the only channels were 4,6,8,13 & 59.
I had no idea who any of the actors were, but I remember being completely hypnotized by the performances & storyline.

Just one example of attention to historical detail that's easy to miss. At the seven minute mark there is a tobacco can on the telegraph clicker. The size and shape of a tobacco can made it a perfect resonator to make the clicks easier to hear and was common practice for telegraphers.

Francis Albert Sinatra was an American singer and actor. He earned critical praise for his performance as a psychopathic killer posing as an FBI agent opposite Sterling Hayden in the film Noir Suddenly (1954). He died on may 14 1998, aged 82 at Los Angeles, California, US. My native place. RIP 🙏

His acting abilities were impeccable in his portrayal of the, ex-convict /rehabilitating dope addict / novice musician , in , The Man with the Golden Arm. In my opinion , one of the greatest, classic black & white film noir of all time. The Man with the Golden Arm , with a exceptional cast , realistic script and gritty cinematography outshines this film ,but Sinatra's excellent acting , the portrayal of a deranged assassin, (watch his eyes and smirk used intermittently throughout the film) is superb from start to finish.
I was never a huge fan of Sinatra's vocals even though I enjoy and appreciate the genre, but his acting abilities are so underrated it's absolutely mind boggling. I believe if he had turned his efforts towards the big screen rather than the microphone he'd have been one of Hollywoods all time big stars. Guy was certainly born with plenty of talent.

After his love affair, marriage and divorce from Ava Gardner, no one wanted to hire Sinatra since he trashed a fine family to walk away and pursue his passion. This role came along and those that mattered saw a great acting job for a heel. The following year he took the role of Maggio in the classic From Here to Eternity and won an Oscar for best supporting actor. It was uphill to the Rat Pack from there!

Good film with Sterling Hayden, James Gleason and Frank Sinatra as a traitor with short man syndrome and possibly Sinatra’s best performance and certainly much improved from his miscast priest in 1948. The plot is incidental as this film is all about the actors and you can’t say that about many modern films to which the acting is often incidental to the FX.

Released just after "On The Waterfront" in 1954: note the use of "somebody" at 1.10, maybe an echo of Brando's "...I could've been SOMEBODY, instead of a bum" line. Discuss.

If all the world was still seeing violence at this low level and people's morals at such a high level .... Then what a better world we would be living in today....but I'm not for any violence low or high.
Wouldn't have a clue what kids play on these games, all I know is that it is teaching them to be numb concerning violence.

STERLYNG HAYDEN, a pretty good actor, FRANK SINATRA, I remember him from OCEAN'S ELEVEN with DEAN MARTIN, PETER LAWFOR, JOEY BISHOP and SAMMY DAVIES, JR..Also FRANK SINATRA STARRED with DEAN MARTIN in a western along with VICTOR BUONO.

Meu Ofício Matar é um ótimo policial noir. Frank Sinatra quis proibir esse filme, mas não conseguiu! Ele quis proibir a exibição desse filme, pois, segundo ele, serviu de inspiração para o assassinato do presidente Kennedy!
