Hello sir Cult Cinema Classics, I have already congratulated thee on the good quality o’ yer subtitles in the French translation o’ the dialogues o’ the films : « the little Lord Fauntleroy », one Shirley Temple film, one film wi’ John Wayne the queer, the film « Too late fer tears » but today, ‘bout this film, I would like tae congratulate thee much mo’ warmly than the previous four times. Well, thou might not be behind the writing o’ the subtitles fer this movie, but I have tae find someone tae receive my congratulations. So it will be yew who will receive these congratulations. Aléa jacta est. As far as this film iz concerned, the translation goes far beyond a simple correct literal translation, it iz rich in well-chosen images an’ perfectly obeying those o’ the French language. Wot a pleasure ! Realize, I just got out o’ the psychiatric hospital ‘cause I had the misfortune tae read ten Sherlock Homes films’ subtitles an’ I got madder than I already waz. In a nutshell, I'm very satisfied, but it's a shame that thou dinnae give me the opportunity tae burn down this S.O.B. o' Yewtube that I constantly complain ‘bout. So, kisses tae thee my beau.

This was unexpected...Mickey Rooney in a nice film noir role. He proves he can pull it off as you watch his poor decisions mount with pity. It's those choices starting with his ditching a pretty and upright girl for a fast floosey. It's like he's getting in deeper by the moment ditching his sense of right. Will he pull himself out of the dead-end path or lose everything? He makes you have to watch because it could go either way. Good tense story.

This is classic Film Noir. Danny (Mickey Rooney) is a bad boy, falls for the conniving blonde when he should have stuck with the much better looking brunette who actually saw something in him (I don't know what, he is kind of a loser). And of course, Peter Lorre at his slimeball best . Plus as someone (me) who has quit smoking over 30 years ago, I felt like I smoked a whole pack of cigarettes watching this film, which felt great. This is a classic. About 1 hour 20 minutes. Well worth it.

An enjoyable film from 1950s, one initial bad decision sets in motion the whole chain of events. The sweet-natured spurned girlfriend is a beautiful actress, Barbara Bates, who was only 43 when she died in 1969. She took her own life, having suffered from severe depression for many years, and this had also ended her acting career, a sad story indeed. Enjoyed Peter Lorre's cameo too.

Doesn’t matter how improbable the storyline, how obvious the outcomes, how stupidly the characters behave, the measure of a good thriller like this is that the viewer takes it all in, hook, line and sinker, right up to the obvious ending. And I’m only halfway through still!

Terrific to see Mickey Rooney in this type of noirish film, he pulls it off, totally believable. The two female leads were convincingly the direct opposite of each other, all the cast were perfect. My only complaint is Peter Lorre had very little to do, he is so memorable in every movie he’s in. I was racking my brains as to how I know the actor who plays the lawyer in the car at the end - Taylor Holmes. He’s Mr Edmond Sr in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes who’s in that hilarious scene where he accuses Marilyn Monroe: do you deny you intend to marry my son for his money? and she replies: no, I intend to marry him for YOUR money! That was yet to come when he appeared in this.

A friend who used to work in the film industry in the 90s told me about a time on set. After a take, one of the other camera operators came up to him and said, "Nice Mickey Rooney". Maureen O'Hara was the main actress in the scene and heard this. She came over and said that in all the years in the industry, she had never heard that term. Then asked what it meant. My friend was slightly embarrassed then admitted it described how the camera slowly moved closer to the actors while keeping everything in focus. Maureen was a bit confused, then my friend said, "you know, a slow creep".

This was such an entertaining film. I just discovered that, according to information on IMDb, Mickey Rooney actually co-financed "Quicksand" with Peter Lorre, which is interesting.
Having Peter Lorre in just about anything makes it worth watching to begin with for me, and Mickey Rooney was enough of a sympathetic character to keep my attention invested in the story.
I suspect that many guys can relate to the domino effect of one financial mishap after the other - as I've personally been, recently, as well, though I haven't had to resort to anything like Rooney's character did. Perhaps, that's what compelled me, subliminally, to look up this particular film online at two o'clock in the morning - which was perfect to watch with eggs over medium, toast and a cup of tea. It was definitely great story for this time of night (or, morning), overall.
By the way, if anyone else watched this film with Closed Captioning (or, tried to), you most likely noticed the inaccuracies in the phrasing, which were so bad at times that they were funny. I had to turn them off to maintain any semblance of continuity at one point.
As for my first time in seeing "Quicksand," it was on TCM, many years ago. Thankfully, I found that it was included on a Film Noir DVD collection which I later purchased, though the film quality was quite weathered. Regardless of the scratches and such (which gave it a vintage character) it was still watchable.
Another film that I can recommend, in relation to this one, though they're both individualized productions, is called "Detour." I'm rather certain that it's on CZcams somewhere. My original copy of it, also included on the aforementioned Film Noir Collection, was quite damaged, though it has since been restored through Criterion, which I purchased last year.
Anyway, thanks for reading this comment, and long live the art of Film Noir. :)

Don't miss Drive a Crooked Road, from about 4 years later. Mickey was a phenomenal actor. Some who know their stuff say he was one of the very best, maybe the best. For sheer screen power, I think Cagney takes the cake, but Mickey is right up there, and he may have had more versatility than any of 'em.

Pobre Danny!
