A few days ago our outside tap failed. We went into the garden to find water going everywhere. Only way to stop it was to use the stopcock, unfortunately it was linked to the whole house & we lost water. I'm disabled & my elderly father looks after me. He was in a panic to fix it, we couldn't be without water/heating for too long & the system would drain quite quickly with what was left. Thanks to your video, a quick and easy fix & water back on without need to call a plumber who couldn't come for a few days. Your PTFE video was also really helpful. Thanks very much, a huge help. Easy to follow video & you made it clear this was a task we could do ourselves. 👍

Thanks for this. I am a novice and the Pte video also came in handy. My initial challenge was that the new tap only went to the point it was upside down, but the old tap still went on correctly. I check the threads on both taps and noticed the thread on the old tap was rubbed down. It just took a controlled amount of brute force to correct it, and tap is now fitted.

All seemed to go well until I screwed the tap on and then found that the tight spot wasn't when the tap was vertical but more like 2 o'clock rather than up and down at 6 6 o'clock.
In the end I just wound load of PTFE round until the contraption seemed to tighten more naturally at the 6 o'clock spot.
    Was that the right approach?

Hi, what happens if after tightening the tap assembly the position of the tap handle is misaligned as like upside down? To make it right side up by further forced clockwise turn would over stress the joint (boom!), and to make it rightsideup by anticlockwise turn, would loosen the joint!!!

Just take off the tap and redo the PTFE tape, adding a bit more than last time will give you more leeway on which way the tap will end up facing without over stressing the thread whilst keeping a good seal 👌🏻

Had our outside tap replaced a year ago, now it's leaking where it screws into the pipe. I did try to unscrew it (as I did with the old one!) but it is too tight and I didn't want to risk damaging it. Good to see I'm not alone so may try again with more tools. Luckily there is a stop cock in the pipe supplying it, so don't need to turn off mains, but now the stop cock leaks!! Now I need to look for options on that.

I have the external tap coming off a T joint on the cold water pipe that then takes cold water upstairs to tank and bathroom taps/loo.
There was no room for an iso valve on the small pipe to the external tap (😱), but there IS one just before the T joint.
    SO, my worry is this:
If I turn the iso off (after ensuring boiler is tirned off👍), then replace the external tap, will I have created an air bubble in the pipe running upstairs to tank/taps/loo upstairs??
Or will leaving the external tap running clear the air out??

You have not mentioned that in cold weather after turning water supply off inside and opening tap that the the nut at the bottom of the tap has to be undone to release the water within the check valve. Without releasing the water within the check valve mechanism the water will freeze and break the valve thus rendering it ineffectual.

After the event, I can say it's not difficult, but before the event I was worried that the tap wouldn't unscrew (it did without complaining), worried that I'd put the tape on the wrong way, that the tap wouldn't go back on...
The tap (including correctly applied tape) did go back on, but then it got stuck at a 90 deg angle. Trying not to panic, I thought that perhaps I should use a wrench, as I'd only tightened it by hand. So I did, and then worried that I'd break it irreparably! I didn't, it's all OK and doesn't drip any more.
