Steve Austin and Chris Jericho kicked the Forbidden Door open on the Broken Skull Sessions, and continue the conversation here with a detailed look at Stone Cold’s career! They break down a bunch of his memorable matches including some with Ricky Steamboat, Ravishing Rick Rude, Barry Windham, and Chris Benoit. Steve speaks extensively about his former tag team partner Brian Pillman and their run as the Hollywood Blonds, and his feud with Mr. McMahon and what Vince was really like in the ring. He also recalls Wrestlemania 13 and the double turn with Bret Hart, and his three Wrestlemania main event matches with The Rock.

Bret/Austin was an amazing feud. The thing that solidified Stone Cold as a major player. Even though it was a year and a half between SS 96 and when Austin won the belt at Mania14, it was clear he was going to be a (even THE) top guy in the company. Plus, that Mania13 double turn was perfectly done. Austin went on to become the top face and Bret did some of his best mic work as a heel through 97. If Montreal hadn't happened and Bret stayed, I'm sure he would have gladly done the job and passed the torch to Steve at WM14

That match with Austin which is widely recognized as possibly the greatest match of all time by countless wrestler's passed and present. Bret used the idea of Steve getting color just as Piper did for the Bret/Piper match where Bret get's busted open. Just that thought process to understand how a "little spot like getting gigged" can affect the match and the fans reaction is what wrestling is about!! That's the Rock and Stone Cold thanking Bret Hart for giving them both the push, Bret was the main draw at the time. He didn't need to give any Wrestler a push and to think he knew these 2 stars could go on to be big stars and would take his place. It didn't matter to him because he loved the business and wanted the best for the business. Then you get Triple H and Shawn Michaels trying to block the rise of The Rock, that's the difference in Bret Hart and men like Triple H and Shawn. That's how great Bret Heart was, he for see two of the biggest stars in WWE history before anybody else. Shawn and Triple H didn't want anybody taken their spot and would rather block people from being big stars so it not affect their position. When Shawn screwed Bret, he really thought he had the power and Vince would listen to everything he said and he was the main man. He found out the hard way, when Vince said he had to drop the belt to Stone Cold and Shawn didn't want to but had no choice. The Undertaker was standing behind the curtain to make sure Shawn did the job for Stone Cold that night. Shawn then got mad because Tyson put the Austin 316 shirt over his face, then after went to the back to confront Vince and Tyson. Luckily for Shawn Shane Mcmahon calmed him down and he left the building. That was a man who thought after getting rid of Bret he would be the main man, him and Triple H thought they would run things. Then that happened to Shawn and The Rock and Stone Cold took over, when Shawn came back he had no choice but too accept it. That was the reason The Rock never wanted to do any favours for Shawn in the ring and they never faced each other. So thanks to Brat Hart and Vince not being dictated to by Shawn and Triple H, we witnessed the Attitude Era's biggest stars in Austin and the Rock. The Rock and Stone Cold have always appreciated what Bret did for them and that's why they were never close with Triple H and Shawn at the time. I think deep down Vince knew he made a huge mistake with Bret Hart by screwing him and I bet he would not do it if he had the choice again. I believe if Bret had of stayed in the Attitude Era it would have been even better. We would of seen Bret against Kurt Angle, Jericho and The Rock, he would had some classic matches.

Call me crazy, but that's the best match I've ever seen in my view. Pretty much all of my favourite matches involve Bret Hart. Steve had an incredible, unbeatable run in the WWF, but in terms of actual matches there, I think probably because of the neck injury, his best wrestling matches as a whole were in WCW, particularly with Brian Pillman in the Blonds and working singles with guys like Ricky Steamboat. They had some incredible, overlooked matches. But I think the neck injury basically ended the career of Steve Austin as a technical wrestler. Certainly, being more a brawler played into his gimmick a lot more, but as a wrestler, he was terrific in WCW and it's easy to see why Bret was the guy who wanted him brought to WWF in the first place. All Steve needed was the right gimmick and he got one in WWF. There's nobody like Bret Hart in wrestling today, a guy with the credentials and the desire to help other guys get over. Everyone's in it for themselves, or they think wrestling is a circus act rather than a psychological, kayfabe contest. That's why I'm not as big a fan of Shawn Michaels as some people are. He was athletic and did a lot of risky, spectacular moves, but as a wrestler, I much prefer Steve's and Bret's and to some extent Brian's before the injury.

WWE likes to lie and say Austin’s path to the top began with King of the Ring 96 when that is a bald faced lie. After KotR Austin didn’t even have a match at SummerSlam 96. He wrestled Yokozuna in the Free for All before the PPV. He didn’t even appear at the September In Your House and wrestled a midcard match against HHH at the October 96 PPV. It wasn’t until he faced Bret Hart at Survivor Series 96 that he started to become a superstar. His feud with Bret is what led to his massive popularity in 1997. By 1998 he was a made man.
