If it fits the story, blood should be completely fine. But if you bleed in every single match, it kinda just gets old really fast.

It shouldn't be banned. It SHOULD, however, be used more sparingly than certain people use it. Blood should mean something, imho.
I think blood should be reserved for when it's necessary for the story. So yes it should stay banned because if you tell guys it's okay to do it and its not banned, they'll do it every match and it'll be meaningless.
The blood running down Austin's head is so iconic. He was already on his rise to the top but after that match he was a made man.
That image is perfect, right down to the fact the blood runs into his mouth between his teeth. I always thought that looked like Austin had broken his teeth gritting them so hard through his sheer determination. My all time favourite match, it's perfect.
Bret made the best call ever when he told Steve he needed color for that match. He knew it would push Steve into the stratosphere.
I love how Bret remembers EVERY DETAIL about meaningful past events and then proceeds to tell the story in a way that it sets up the story - the situation, the environment, who was present, the time, the place. And what's great, you can tell he REALLY THINKS about what he's saying before saying it. He really holds his career with pride and honour. I love that about him.
His detail telling into last events never changes no matter how many times he's interviewed. Which is why I believe him more than others who are asked about last events. Respect to him. Best there is best there was and best there ever will be.
Bret could probably remember most of his matches and spots. Perfectionist, the excellence of execution
@@clarity2115 he has an excellent memory….I met him back in 2019 and mentioned a random house show I went to, as a kid. He immediately knew which year it was that I was talking about. I think he kept a diary which certainly helped.

People sometimes underestimate how important Bret was in that period between the end of the Golden Era and the start of the Attitude Era. The guy was keeping WWF relevant for a lot of those years. Plus the Attitude Era would never have happened without him.
i agree, i've always compared Bret Hart turning heel (at least to USA fans) to Hogan turning heel and joining NWO. It was tone shift in the entire company of WWF. After Hogan left for WCW in 1994, Bret ended up being the longest running babyface in the company.
It really was a great, albeit brief era 95 to 96ish. The ropes weren't red yet but many of the attitude era stars where there making a freshman debut.
Hey, remember the back lot brawl between goldust and rowdy Roddy Piper? Or that wild match between road warriors (who I love, heal or otherwise) and nation of domination with trash cans flying everywhere? How about Vader? I loved that beast! Yeah, 'pre attitude era' I call it. Good stuff.

Man, seeing Bret this old makes me feel…well, old! One of my childhood hero’s. Still aggrieved about what happened at WM9!
Time flies so fast! He's turning 67 and Hogan is almost 71, Steve, Shawn and Taker around 57-58 maybe pushing 59 this year. The 90s was 3 decades ago but it felt like it's just yesterday!

Before Steve's neck injury, he was a great technical wrestler. He had to adapt his style because his moveset became more limited due to his neck issues.
Absolutely. Some of his matches with Ricky "the dragon" steamboat in WCW were incredible. Luckily, he was able to adapt a more brawling style, which somewhat matched his new change in character. But, his technical prowess was definitely limited after that Owen match.

Steve was hot already but had the injury not happened.... the whole angle of him stunning officials and eventually vince....wouldnt have happened...and i believe that put steve on another level entirely
Yeah pre neck injury, he was a great technical wrestler, good bumper too, post neck injury, he was a brawler, punch kick kinda guy, luckily he was super over so ppl didn’t care by that point, but the lead up, he was great. It sucks how he had to change his style.
Bret/Steve at WM13 is the match you show people who “don’t get” wrestling. They will after that. Best match I’ve ever seen.
That one and the epic hell in the cell match with mankind and undertaker. Those 2 matches will get people into wrestling real quick lol
When I think of the good Ole days, this is one of the first matches I think of.
He made matches look real, an art form in itself.
That visual was perfect. Soon as Brett got him in the sharp shooter and Steve lifted his head uo and screamed the blood just poured out his head perfectly. Amazing

Bret vs Austin at Mania 13 is still my favorite match of all time.
Although Austin was already gaining momentum by WM 13, that submission match made him and reignited Bret Hart. He became face, Bret cemented his obvious heel turn and Ken Shamrock turned pro wrestler.
Bret is such an artist and his attention in detail is incredible. I'm glad he recovered fully from his stroke or otherwise we would never know about these stories.
He needs to work for a company, great mind for the business. If I’m Tony Khan I hire Bret as head of creative. Who is going to tell Bret hart, NO?? The young bucks or Kenny!? Bret gets it 100 percent.

Austin said Bret Hart, ' THE very BEST ring worker EVER '. Austin also said that to his knowledge, " NO one ever got really. hurt in a match with Bret Hart " so it makes sense that Austin trusted Bret to blade him
I love hearing this man tell stories. Because when he tells them you know it's authentic you know that there is no BS coming out of this man's mouth and I truly respect him for it he is a good man he truly is what he says the greatest the best
Bret remembers everything so perfectly. If you go and watch the match right now. You do actually see him spit out the blade right as hes thrown over the ropes, and you can see him holding it between his finger and thumb during the irish whip reversal into the barricade. Bret is a true legend.
I saw him give Stone Cold a tap on the back of his arm to signal he was about to do the deed. Other than that, you can’t even see it happen. They nailed it.

I heard Bret liked and respected Austin so much. He told Vince if it was him against Austin at Survivor Series and not him v HBL he would have been happy to drop the title
Yeah well they planned on Steve winning it at Wrestlemania cause he was the next big guy. Doing it at Survivor series would have been lame.

I watched the raws leading up to and the Wrestlemania that year I think it was 97. I’m so glad young fans who weren’t around then go back and appreciate how great he was and how big he was in getting Austin over. Who else could of put Austin over like that when he still won match? Nobody not even Taker
I didn't even notice and I saw it live on PPV in 97. The match was that good that you were SO invested. I'd give that match 10 stars if I could.
Bret Hart is such a great storyteller. I know he was a great wrestler but I think it was his storytelling abilities that made him so good.

Jim Cornette has an awesome watch-along episode for this match & he immediately saw where the blade happened before Bret threw Steve at the announcers. It's such a quick blink-and-you'll-miss it detail but once you see it, it's brilliant. The fact they convinced McMahon it was real/accidental is just the icing on the cake, for me the blood absolutely made the match especially with Steve's screaming face at the end.
Which is funny because according to Bruce Pritchard, one of the hard cameras caught where Bret bladed Steve (apparently).
I think even if Vince knew they did it purposely he couldn't help but appreciate the absolute masterpiece that occured.
@@apostolostvable Agreed, I suspect Vince knew it was a blade job but kept it quiet because of how damn good the match turned out. Legit one of my top 5 WM matches of all time, plus even now they act like brothers more than coworkers. You don't see that much in the current wrestling/entertainment era & it makes me sad...

This was one of the greatest matches I'd ever seen. Austin passing out reaching for the ropes with blood squirting out of his forehead just before he passed out.

Imagine an alternate universe where Shawn goes to WCW in 97 instead and Bret does the honors for Steve at Wrestlemania 14….thing is…without the screwjob, we wouldn’t have had the Mr. Mcmahon character, most likely.
The Screwjob was the catalyst that created one of the biggest heels of all time. Everyone can relate to having a shitty boss they've dreamt of kicking the shit out of.
Steve Austin got to live that dream.
I feel Mr. McMahon would have happened regardless. Bret had a few "run-ins" with McMahon before that and it looked like he was getting more involved as a character

Austin stunned McMahon well before the screw job. It was going to happen regardless. The WWF 100 % chose the wrong person between Bret & Shawn. Shawn was useless.

He was so integral to the resurgence the company had in 1997 as they moved into the Attitude Era.

Austin was the catalyst, but his feud with Bret was what put him on the main event map. People always argue he was already there after the KOTR speech, but forget he was wrestling on the preshow a few months later at SummerSlam.
I just recently watched the match between Bret & Davey Boy @ ‘In Your House’ , & was amazed at the quality of the match. Bret was actually ‘busted open’ worse the Stone Cold @ WM XIII. It was the only time I can remember Bret bleeding in any match.

Thats one of the best matches because of many reasons and one for me was the heel flip. Those two knew how to work and respond to a crowd.
The best part about Bret is: if I go back and watch clips about what he talks about the man is accurate and I love how he gives context to what we saw.

This is my favorite match of all time! I quit watching wrestling for two decades and I just restart following it because I kept thinking about that match. It's a masterpiece of in-ring storytelling. Thank you so much for showing that part of the interview: that mean the world to me!
Putting that Goldberg bullshit aside, Bret is the GOAT for helping out Stone Cold to shine. Bret is a great supporter of new talent or talent that needs to be pushed to the top. A real pro in the ring and a cool supporter to the business. I would listen to his stories all day long. His Hall of Fame speech is great too.

King of the Ring 1996 was where Austin 3:16 was born. But the start of Stone Cold Steve Austin's legend was at WM13 vs. Bret Hart officially making him a babyface and turning the crowd in his favor.
Brett always made everyone else look good .. that's what made him great
I remember being a kid watching this match and wanting Bret to win so badly. But when he did win, I almost felt bad that he did. I don't think I was the only one who's favorite wrestler was Bret, but after this match, it became Steve Austin. The best example of someone passing the torch in wrestling history. As much as Vince tried to make other wrestlers after Hogan, it was clearly Bret who was "The Man". And after WM 13.......Well, we all know what happened with "Stone Cold". What an amazing time it was to be a wrestling fan!

Remember watching Brett wrestling on Stampede Wrestling back in the day with his brothers DrD BadNewsAllen and the British Buldogs. They toured all the small Prairie towns.
Funny thing about Brett Hart is i watched wrestling when i was a kid
And i remember playing either a PS1 or PS2 wrestling game where brett was in it and was a main act.
I first learned about brett in that game and continued watching wrestling never having even seen him in the ring
It was a strange thing never hearing about him but knowing he was a great wrestler, i played as him all the time in the game, then he wasn't in the ones going forward
This guy in amazing. He has the most memorable matches in my opinion. Perfect, Micheals twice, the bulldog, Austin twice and on and on
Not only my favourite WrestleMania match but my favourite match ever! I simply love that match and even though my favourite wrestler of all time Stone Cold Steve Austin lost to Bret Hart it bring back such good memories for me. I did love mma and did mma for 16yrs and competed too (not for 16yrs) but no mma fight comes close to that match in how good the Bret Hart/Austin makes me feel and warms my heart, probably because mma lacks that storytelling that you get with pro wrestling and how you get invested in a great storied feud over months. MMA it’s just two guys who has a fight maybe they have a rematch at the next event or fight again a few times over a couple years period but there’s no real story there, what people loved about Conor McGregor was he brought a bit of pro wrestling to the UFC press conferences with his promos which are straight from wrestling except Conor McGregor can use real language which will never be used in WWE with worlds like fuck and cunt and it sounds like what a person would say in a real fight which what the UFC is about…real fights.
The fact that Bret still loves and respects Steve all this time says volumes. Massive respect to both wrestlers. Both of them on my Mt Rushmore definitely. 👍😁
Steve also respects Bret, vice-versa. Mutual respect. He told people in an interview that Bret made him and put him on the "map". WM13 was the turning point in his career and the rest was history!
And now I have to go watch the match again :D

Yes, I believe Bret Hart to be a true class act. None of us are perfect, but he just seems like such a a true, honest-and at times very frank (more in a good way than not) individual.
I truly delight in watching his videos on here, you really learn a lot, in my own opinion.

All the no nothings who slam bret for being 'bitter' ... he's not bitter he just loves wrestling. He was a pro and did everything like a pro. Rightly, he slams these alleged pro's like plummer moxley who couldn't work his way out of a wet paper bag and sits in the corner OPENLY blading himself.
Bret was a great wrestler. A great storyteller. He never hurt anybody and made it look as real as it gets. He's rightly proud of that. An absolute pro who did Pro Wrestling properly. None of this thigh slapping bs.

One thing you can count on is Bret Hart telling the truth about things. Ok sometimes he might get dates slightly mixed up but I suppose when you spend like 300 days a year over a 15yr period some days can blur into others but the basic story never changes

6:36 Austin bled like CRAZY in 1992 WCW in a War Games match. One of the best War Games matches ever so he wasn't new to bleeding. Unless that wasn't a blade job back then, but I gotta believe it was

I was going to say the Bret was mistaken or was remembering wrong because Austin did a series of matches with Dustin Rhodes in late-1991 WCW and he definitely juiced for at least one of those matches that I saw...but looking back on it he was probably getting hardwayed by Dustin in the corner with some heavy knuckle punches to the forehead...he might very well have not known how to blade yet by early-1997...Austin wrote in his book about how the two of them would come back from their matches (He and Dustin)covered in blood and jubilant and Lex Luger would be appalled by the amount of blood...
People talk about Mania 13 but Bret and Austin had more matches than that that were good.
There is an art to blading correctly folks. Bret couldn't have said it any better. NEVER allow someone else to blade you. If your going to do or have been told to do it for a certain match. Do it yourself. I've watched and been a part of this business for nearly 40yrs now on the indy scene. And i've seen A LOT in terms of mistakes that were made. Especially, pertaining to blading correctly. I also don't advocate keeping it in your mouth that's an old timer's strategy. Best place is in your wrist tape for easy access. Or have the ref handle it for you. You NEVER want it in your trunks or boots because you have to reach further and it makes it look to obvious. The most classic style of pulling it off right is throwing opponent into ring post or with a chair shot to the head. Opponent goes down and then the head is under the ring apron while your down then blade. Works even better if you have long hair.
That was one legendary match. Probably the one and only match of its kind. Never more

i don't like blood in wrestling normally but this match is the exception. they did such a good job of using the blood to tell the story. not to just shock someone.
