  • In this Studio Sessions episode of The Birders Show, Chris and Diego are joined by someone with a big story to tell. Dušan Brinkhuizen is a biologist, birder, photographer and birdguide living in Ecuador. In 2015, he assembled a birding dream-team to make an attempt on the Big Day world record of 354 species in one 24-hour period; a record that they ended up smashing! The trio start by discussing the fascinating world of competitive birding as they go over past records, and then move on to the incredible logistics of “Team Ecuador’s” attempt, a journey that took Dušan and his team from the Ecuadorian Amazon, up and over the Andes, and down to the Pacific coast in just one day! Dušan talks about some of his strategies, and mentions some of the day’s highlights - from a Nocturnal Curassow in the Amazon basin, to the second ever Pied Water-tyrant recorded in Ecuador, and a very special Red-crested Cotinga that marked a huge milestone as the team crossed the Papallacta Pass. The guys then discuss Dušan’s new book, Birds and Mammals of the Galapagos, and talk about the challenge of writing a field guide in such a biodiverse place, before ending with a series of rapid fire birding questions.

Great episode! From about 2012 till 2015 I had a fierce competition with Dusan doing Big Days in the Netherlands. His team versus my team. Each year was the same story. We would go first and beat their record of the previous year and then a couple of days later they would beat us again. But after we got the record over 200 (which is a tremendous amount for such a small European country) in 2016 they stopped doing Big Days in the Netherlands. Now Dusan and I both still have our records. I in the Netherlands and he globally ^-^

Awesome episode! Well deserved recognition for Dusan and his teammates. I had the pleasure of birding on tour with Dusan recently and not only is he a phenomenal and enthusiastically infectious birder, but he is also a genuinely nice chap! Hearty congratulations!

Great, I was missing the show!
That record is unbalivable. Before you said the number I was thinking maybe 300 species. They did a specie every 3 minutes more or less. More species than i have seen in my entire life.

Excellent episode guys, I loved it! Two years ago I had the good fortune of birding in Ecuador on a similar route, but of course for two weeks, not 24 hours! I did see the dipper at Guango Lodge but dipped on the torrent duck. One thing I would have asked Dusan is whether it was his/their only attempt at breaking the record in Ecuador, or did they try it before? Question for you guys: Have you tried getting Peter Kaestner on the show on the occasion of his 10,000 species?
