Honda ST1300 Rear Suspension Pre-load Adjuster Maintenance

  • Over time the hydraulic fluid in the Honda ST1300 Pan European rear suspension pre-load preload adjuster will seep out and result in poor handling. The fix is to add more fluid and remove the air. Its really simple and requires little time and few tools. The standard position for the rear suspension preload adjuster is 7 clicks in. I currently run mine somewhere between 4 and 6 clicks in. The STANDARD Rebound Damping adjustment on the other side is to match up the two dots (one turn out from full clockwise) I run mine slightly Softer when biking solo at 190#. Use your own weight and riding style to determine where the adjustments for rebound damping (dampener) and spring pre-load (preloader).

    Been trying to find a video for ages describing this problem with the preload adjuster. My VFR800 runs a very similar setup, and has the same problem. Now it’s seems you’ve solved it! Many thanks for the video 👍

      Just in case anybody comes across this, my VFR800 VTEC 6th Gen had the same problem, squishy rear end and even with the remote preload adjust turned all the way up, I never had enough preload to take a pillion.
      Did this repair and now it works a treat, big thumbs up 👍

    Thank you for your time. Currently working on mine. I did not push the plunger back down. I hope that is why I am getting zero tension right now.. 30 mins later: Success. That was the problem. Have tension now and a much better feel to suspension. Thank you.

    Great video! Just bought a used 2004 ST1300 and restored the preload functionality following your instructions. Talked to the local Honda dealer about the issue to try and figure out what oil to use but they insisted that the shock and the preload adjuster “came as a kit” and that they had never heard of anyone refilling the adjuster and that it wasn’t advised.
    Anyway thanks for the instructional video, really awesome!

    I changed mine , by just removing two bolts 🔩 on back of the preload adjuster, then pull lightly and it will allow enough slack , remove banjo bolt from back and then used carb cleaner flooded the end filling reservoir then shake n dump , fill area where ball for click is with carb cleaner, then dump , all clean , click working nice fill with a spray top off of a olf wax polish bottle and , replace on bike 🏍 took 15 min.. never took off seat, side panels or adjuster screw.

    • @JustPlainCommonSense

    • @alanhassall
      @alanhassall Před 2 lety

      It will be fine. The oil just preloads the spring. The viscosity matters most when used in a damping situation, being forced through a small orifice. The thicker stuff will flow through the tube with no problem. I used 20wt because I was hoping it would stay put.
