      "He did something right to get where he is?" You mean like take a few million dollars from his daddy to start his 1st business, then screw over small businesses & contractors while developing properties,, be litigious as hell, etc.? I'm sorry, that's not "Right." however, it IS Capitalism at it's finest. You make more money, you should pay more taxes. PERIOD. When you actually look into how expensive it iS to be poor (read something like Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickle and Dimed: On Not Getting By in America"), you start to understand income inequality and how it isn't a question of those who work harder vs. not. Let me put it another way: These guys are born on 3rd base thinking they hit a triple...

      Cannabis (marijuana) remains a Schedule II drug under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act, and, unless otherwise regulated for production and distribution for medical purposes, is subject to offences under that Act.
      Possessing and selling cannabis for non-medical purposes is still illegal everywhere in Canada.

      A while ago politicians had normal jobs and lived a common life, being able to relate to the people. It was common to have finished a non politic related carrier or education before going into politics. Today politicians are trained, you can take courses in the university and you are able to go into politics without having done anything in your life. Making the matter worse it makes them depend on success, cuz failure means losing their only income and status. It encourages every politician to lie for personal success and often they lose the sight of why they became politicians in the first place. So nobody should wonder, why so many politicians are disconnected with the real world. In Germany this is being pointed out quite often. And there is a age limit in place here(What suppost to help the issue), but it doesn't solve it.

You get charged hundreds of dollars if you don't (which helps cover the costs of Obamacare itself) and you can be sure as shit that sooner or later you'll use that health insurance you have. As a former insurance agent, I know a number of other reasons Oliver doesn't mention why selling insurance across state lines wouldn't work.
    Allowing insurers to sell across state lines is every state has it's own insurance laws and regulations. Either All the existing state laws would have to be replaced with federal laws, or insurers would have to conform with all the state laws that they sell in.
    Both options have a number of problems. The former has the most problems, but the later won't work either.
    Replacing state insurance laws with federal ones would fuck over companies because they would have to rewrite all their policies to conform with these new laws. This would be a long and complicated process. In my state, it took the company I worked for nearly a year to get one policy written and then approved by the state insurance department. A federal program would undoubtedly be less efficient then the state department so we can assume this would take much longer if the federal government had to approve the policy. Sounds like a pain in the ass right? We imagine doing that with every single policy and plan you sell to make it conform with new laws that probably aren't thought out well because congress is pushing the whole thing to fast.
    Insurers conforming to the state laws of the state they are selling in would be much easier and make a lot more sense, but no one would do it. Why would you spend years trying to get policies approved in a state you don't work in on top of trying to set up networks (which Oliver did mention)? This makes selling in other states even harder then Oliver depicts it.
    Either you fuck over the entire insurance industry with federal laws, or you give them no reason to actually compete in other states. The only thing he could probably do to make this plan work is incentivize it with tax breaks, but this would be counterproductive because it would reduce tax revenue without reducing insurance costs. If have to spend money on this shouldn't we spend it effectively?
    Obamacare is terrible in a lot of ways, but this is obviously worse, this is coming from a conservative.

If the place you are right now - no matter if citizen or tax payer - has the resourses to treat you're medical condition, you should have a right to that treatment. In most european countries you can go to the doctor or hospital and receive treatment and often you don't have to pay anything or only a fraction of the actual costs. That's what we call human solidarity and is more important than your nationality or social status.

    Healthcare doesn't have to be complicated if it's provided as a single payer system, or if it is a guaranteed right to all citizens. Think if of this way, I was in the Army for 6 years. During that time, my health care was covered no matter what. The doctors nurses and aids were all military also, so there was no "Overhead" if you will. That was their job, to treat service members. All of this was funded by tax dollars. My job in the military was billing and coding for these services so I had an inside look of how expensive treatments were and they were SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive to the government and providers than it is to see a private or "Not for Profit" hospital. Still to this day I don't understand why we can't go to a single payer program, or if I may be so bold, why healthcare isn't provided for free, by our trillions of wasted tax dollars every year. Healthcare really can be that simple.

    People seem to forget the ACA also setup not just healthcare. But had mandates, like in the restaurants you see caloric counts thanks to the ACA. ACA wasn't just about healthcare, but also provided a lot of benefits for all around health in America. It provided more than insurance cover. And people seem to forget the ACA was violently opposed by the Republicans. Obama said it himself, it was not the bill he wanted, it was the bill they had to settle for to make compromise and it was a start. Beyond that, medicaid cuts are not going to be good for me or those who are disabled, who pay for a lot of their programs through medicaid.

      Oh! So that's why calorie information was on the menu at Denny's the last time a friend asked me to meet him there. I don't typically eat out because eating out is expensive and my food budget for myself for a month is around $65 so I try not to waste it on shitty diner/fast food. My mind was blown that most of the meals sat at around 3000 calories and the infamous Grand Slam was at around a whopping 5000 caloric count. Males are supposed to consume around 2000 calories per DAY and females around 1500, depending on activity level. One meal at Denny's is technically the only meal a person should consume that entire day, or, if you're female you can eat half and save the other half to have as your only meal the next day.

      @netwolfe Před 7 lety +32

      +Jan Hall Well in general the common argument I have heard for that line of thinking is a theory called trickle down economics. The theory of trickle down economics is that more the upper class, the more money or benefits will trickle down to the lower income. Or to put it another way, if the rich people have more money they will use that extra money to create more jobs, donate more money to charity, and/or increase how much they pay their employees. It is of my personal opinion that this theory has a flaw in there somewhere. But that is argument people.

    • @CaptainCore993
      @CaptainCore993 Před 7 lety +108

      netwolfe The flaw is there is no legitimate incentive for the uber-wealthy to expand their business. They could easily hoard all of that extra money for themselves.

    • @suusweet1
      @suusweet1 Před 7 lety +69

      'trickle down' more like 'collect at the top'

    • @Johnny-rx4hs
      @Johnny-rx4hs Před 7 lety +77

      trickle down economics is like maintaining a building by keeping the top nice and shiny and ignoring the rust and decay in the foundation. Sooner or later the whole thing will come down.

    • @lexik4603
      @lexik4603 Před 7 lety +36

      +CaptainCore993 And that's exactly what has happened. Tax cuts for the rich hasn't done jack shit besides lead to the rich putting that extra money in their pocket. And anyway, the entire economy and well-being of everyone else shouldn't rely on what a few rich people feel like doing with their money.

    When you go to the hospital the prices should be that a person working minimum wage could afford the bill.
    You can't expect someone making $8.50 to be able to pay a $11,000 bill.
    I think it first starts at the hospital and the extortionate prices. When I worked in the pharmacy it would break my heart to see an elderly woman having to choose between food and her heart meds because the price was so high.
    Honestly in my opinion it's extortion because what are you going to do, Not pay the bill and die?
    For real one time my mother went to the hospital and they charged her $200 for two pills of aspirin. Tell me that isn't extortion.

    As a student working two part time jobs (read: no benefits) turning 26 next year, I WILL be kicked off my mom's insurance. I have an illness for which I take four prescription medications. On paper I am as poor as they come. This terrifies me because without those medications, I could die. It's a huge possibility. And given $2000 a year? That would cover three months of my medication, maybe less. I am absolutely terrified.
