Defamation is NOT a "serious crime". It's not a crime at all - nobody goes to prison for defamation. It's a tort that gives rise to civil disputes. He is completely clueless.
It does fall under criminal law, know as "criminal defamation" and the consequences are damages (tort, as you said) rather than sentencing.

As a legal consultant, I can tell you for damn sure that emails are considered informal. A real summons, or even just submitting necessary documents, are typically physical, and are handed over personally, even through representatives. I went on Onion's website a couple of weeks ago, and I saw how little engagement he had on it. I cringed. I get why he sent the email; he's bored, and in need of more drama. Lol

Age is just a number is a common defense of people like onion boy.
In reality age does make a huge difference. Children are easily manipulated and taken advantage of. They don't have the life skills or cognitive development necessary to make major life decisions such as consent.
Even young adults are at a lower maturity ( generally speaking) than middle age and older adults. We all go through different life stages and have different priorities during those stages. I'm a 36 year old man. I can't imagine trying to have a relationship with an 18 year old woman or even a woman in her mid 20s. Our interests and priorities are worlds apart.

It actually might be, in some state. Generally it is not, and possibly there is nowhere that it is acceptable. It is, however, a common first step for a lawyer, or company.
I worked for an organization that used cease-and-desist letters (drafted by a lawyer, but sent out by the organization) to deter copyright and trademark infringement. Often sent by snail mail or email (both when both were available).
It's kind of a shot off the bow before the lawyers get involved.
This could be that, or it could be empty posturing and grandstanding.
*Knowing what we know of Oniosion, I favor the latter.* But I suppose time will tell.
