Riggins was one of the all time greatest running backs
In 1983, John Riggins (the Deisel) literally ran over defenses like a Mack truck in every game. He ended up with 24 touchdowns that year.
Think he scored 24 rushing TDS the next year (age 34!) . That record stood for 15+years.
Taking that year off of football before Joe Gibbs got to Washington really helped prolong his career.
@@w41duvernay Being underutilized by the Jets also prolonged his career
Diesel Riggins .... one of the best power backs of all time.
Fun fact : Diesel and Earl Campbell were almost teammates on the Redskins.
Can you imagine that backfield??
OMG it’d be like a bulldozer and a German tank working together.
THE GREATEST diesel Redskin one back RIGGINS averaged 30 runs per game as a running back at age 33 won the superbowl with the hogs
dude was a power back
He was a power back with speed.
Stephen D is he in the Hall of Fame?
@@AmirKhan-yv8jm Yes.
including a Superbowl MVP
people often overlook what riggo did in that playoff run. not just the superbowl. each game he carried the skins to victory. his moment was huge. wow. HTTR.
John Riggins was one of the faster backs in NFL history believe it or not.
He held the Kansas State High school and collegiate records for the 100 yard dash
Think about it -- A guy weighing 220-230 lbs in track condition running a 9.7 Second 100 yd. dash and a 10.2 S 100 M.
That's crazy -- Darrell Green and Bullet Bob Hayes were faster, but they were only playing at 180-190lbs. Bob Hayes ran a 10 Flat 100M - and he was an Olympic medalist -- Riggo was only 0.2 off the pace.
That’s a little misleading, as the times were recorded when he was younger and lighter.
@@hardcorehouse I'd be willing to bet he was over 200lbs still.
If he was 200, 205 then, that’s way lighter.
He wasn't running that fast at 33, 34 years old....The hogs and Riggins just wore you down, don't forget that line helped Timmy Smith gain 204 yards in the next sb win.
@@jamesmilligan4592 Blocking scheme also helped the trio of Byner, Ervins, and Riggs to a super bowl in 91 also
What a bad ass
That's why they call him "The Diesel" Riggos Rangers! Love them Hogs! HTTR!
Riggins said ' just hitch the wagon to me and I'll pull it '
Skin's entire post season game plan.
10.6 100 meter runner. Let's not forget this man had speed for days.
Yeah ask Dennis Thurman of the Cowboys how fast Rigging was. He couldn't catch him . 66 yard TD run back '79.
@@stevecvino Yep I watched that in a highlights video
In the Super Bowl against the Dolphins, afterwards one of the Miami defensive players said, "when he hits you, it hurts".
The Diesel & The Hogs match made in heaven
They called it the Riggo drill it started in practice and became how to finish games heavy formation Riggins in the back field and everyone players coaches and fans knew Riggins was getting the ball and still they couldn't stop him
0:34 omg they cut the best TRUCK in league history out of the clip. Riggins sends the Lions defender flying 8 yards.
HOW DO THEY CUT THAT OUT ????
*50 Gut*
J.R “Riggo” one of the best athletes to ever to ever play the game! Go 44...go
Just an absolute bruiser!
That's The Diesel ...
"crank up that diesel...vroom...vroom..."...I see Riggins running and hear Washington super fan Chief Zee in my head urging him on.
@@andrewpadaetz5549
Yes that's right I think there was an air horn to.
Holy shit I had to read the title twice
hope someone posts complete 1982 Skins vs Vikings playoff game soon. would love to see the Lions game too.
Just watched them there up
i would like to see it also
czcams.com/video/g8XBIBa3KDM/video.html
He would have done more if George Allen hadn’t wasted his talent
The Diesel was in the zone throughout the 1982 playoffs!
Imagine as a defense, KNOWING he’s coming. And yet you still can’t stop it 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Diesel
I used to buy USA Today just for the sports section to look for the colored photographs of the Redskins highlights. Miss those years.
In Washington they had a John Riggins who wears you down. In Chicago they had a Walter Payton who punishes you. In Green Bay they have an Eddie Lacy who can't simply fall forward. So much for the laws of physics.
Yup. They *had* Eddie Lacy. He was a joke in Seattle.
Rigging was the last great fullback.
lest we forget - Riggins sat out 1980 season over a contract . who knows how a year off to rest and recuperate may have extended his career .
Riggo always fell forward, gaining an extra yard or two.
A monster.
Didn't know Bob Ross had a football career...
Paintin' trees and runnin' in TDs.
If the jets and the red skins had played him more often, he would have the career high record for yards and or touch downs. In the next season after he crushed every teem, the skins let him play very little? It made no sense? I was flabbergasted.
He averaged 34 carries a game that postseason
John Riggins was in the zone throughout the 1982 playoffs!
The Diesel..
2 downvotes from Vikings defensive backs with brain trauma.
A great. Now go back and look for key downfield blocks by #81.
Thank you.
Art Monk was the best downfield blocker ever.
@@swordstoplowshares628 I'm in no position to say the best ever, but on reflection, when I look at highlight reels from this era it is amazing the extra yards Riggins and I suppose other runners got from the likes of Monk.
@@vulture3874 Yeah. I'm a little biased 🤣
@@swordstoplowshares628 me too. I became a Redskins fan by pure fluke.
I was at those games
Too much chat. Just show the runs.
Every time I go back and watch Riggins highlights I know I'm watching the most punishing running back that has ever romped through the NFL! Brown, Sweetness and Sanders were better backs but no one dealt it out like that Mid-west Corn Po USDA PBR ranked bull stud. With his speed he should of had a better Pro career. That last comment, though true, made me laugh when I wrote it. Sandbagging All-Pro...John 'the Diesel' Riggins.
He was great, never to be forgotten, though not as punishing as ultimate fullbacks Csonka or Nagurski, or Earl Campbell. He was right up there though.
@@hardcorehouse .....He was more powerful than Csonka. I remember reading an article years ago where Csonka said Riggins did it better than he (Csonka) did. Comparing him to Nagurski is ridiculous. Nagurski played 6 decades earlier than Riggins. An era where most players barely topped six feet. As Nagurski, Riggins with his size and speed would had dealt out just as much punishment.
Cute speculations that you’re guessing on. You don’t know that he was more powerful than Csonka; some who played against him would be the ones who would know. Csonka was far more brutal, evident by the collisions and the number of conclusions Csonka had. You don’t have the perspective to understand that Nagurski is the gold standard for FBs, who you don’t seem to understand was bigger than ANY of them, and as physical as the other guys who ran harder than Riggo. Csonka was only being gracious, but that went over your head. Your silliness on Nagurski I’ll educate you on, as he’s the true FB prototype along with Csonka. Riggins was more athletic more of a RB but watch carefully there are no best of hits by Riggins because he wasn’t as physical as Csonka or Campbell, which is part of why he played longer. I understand that you’re in luv, and he was great-only Terrell Davis matched him in the playoffs, Harris there also. I’m guessing that you didn’t see any of them playing back in the day. Csonka had numerous concussions, almost had to retire, because he hit harder while Riggo didn’t really have those ailments.
@@hardcorehouse ...What's cute is that you just contradicted yourself and don't even know it. You stated that I don't know that Riggins was more powerful than Csonka. Yet in your previous post you say Nagurski, Csonka, and Campbell are. Cute speculation isn't it? What gives you the for most authority above anyone else's opinion? See the contradiction or do I have to water it down more for you? Did you play either against Riggins or Csonka to make that determination? Csonka was only being gracious.....I guess now you read minds. Your opinion as to why Riggins played longer than Csonka is cute "speculation." No, asinine is the better description. Please, tell me, how many more hits did Csonka take than Riggins or Campbell? Go ahead, tell me. I thought so. Finally, I've watched the game since the early 70s. I've seen Riggins, Campbell, Csonka and many, many more over the years to form an opinion. My word ain't final. Just an opinion. Contrary to yours. You'd think you were in the same huddle with Csonka. Now go back to your YT highlights and NFL NETWORK specials and come back and tell me something I don't already know.
Clearly you're hanging on my words after your head exploded and interrupted your man crush. Powerful and physical aren't the same thing. Obviously you're young with no depth and never actually played the position. Do some research on nagursku you'll eventually get it. I'm out.
He bought the Hogs a lot of dinners that season
if NFL Network is gonna do this then I want Larry Fitzgerald in 2008
Yet they actually picked two performances that rated above this post season dominance?
John Riggins definitely wasn’t the fastest RB but he damn sure was the strongest & toughest 💪 #44
And the craziest.
Tyrunner0097 agreed
He ran a 9.8 100 yard dash lmao wtf you smoking
He actually was very fast.
It would have been better to separate out single game performances and whole postseason performances like Riggins here, and some of these others:
Terrell Davis:
1997: 4 games, 581 rushing yards on 112 carries (5.2 YPC), 8 TDs, 8 catches for 38 yards, Super Bowl MVP
1998: 3 games, 468 yards on 78 carries (6.0 YPC), 3 TDs. 4 catches for 69 yards
Jerry Rice:
1988: 3 games, 21 catches, 409 yards, 6 TDs, Super Bowl MVP
Marcus Allen:
1982: 3 games, 466 rushing yards on 58 carries (8.0 YPC), 5 TDs (4 rushing, 1 receiving). 14 catches for 118 receiving yards. Super Bowl MVP
Joe Montana:
1989: 65 completions in 83 attempts (78.3 completion %), 800 yards, 11 touchdowns, zero INTs. 146.4 passer rating, Super bowl mvp
First play from scrimmage Spread right 50 gut... next play spread right 50 gut ...next play spread right 50 gut...First down .....next play spread right 50 gut ...and on and on it went...
Ayy #hhtr
The SB run goes 43 yds and seems to take only 3.5 seconds! Maybe only Bo Jackson has a better size/ speed combo. Jim Brown though great was playing against guys 30-40 lbs lighter than guys in the 80s.
When I see replays of that run it is over so quickly but I remember watching Super Bowl XVII and from my perspective Riggins seemed to be moving in slow motion on that run.
@@MegaStephen68 You were living in the moment
Where's #4?
Only Larry Fitzgerald's 2008 Run through 4 Playoff Games and a SB can compare with Riggins' 1982 Performance.
I say the two are equal for one reason only: Larry is a rare exception of a player taking over games at Wide Receiver and Running Backs do it a lot.
Only a select few players have the durability of Riggins or Larry, Both got mad skills and HOF credentials
Glad they put Riggo on here. But where's the 85 Bears at on this list? Back to back shutouts? Only 10 points given up in between the Divisional, Championship, and Super Bowl rounds? Scoring on defense multiple times. An insane amount of sacks.
GoPioneersLaser0 these new nfl top 10s suck
it's a list of individual not team performances
Tim is better than John
Jackson, Tim who?
Probably intoxicated when you wrote this inane comment
Pure Riggins? 136 carries in 4 games at age 33? Pure steroids is more like it. But then everyone on defense was juiced as well so its all good.
If you knew John Riggins you would know he would never take steroids.
if Riggins was on steroids he'd be even bigger than he was
