The political seeps in around the edges in this Ewan MacColl song about the coming of winter, or the "Terror Time," as it was known by the Scottish Travelers he worked with while writing his 1964 album, The Traveling People. For us, it brings to mind for us all those who go without a permanent home.

These folks should be headlining every folk music festival.
Please do a full CD of this type of music...haunting, beautiful and somehow bringing peace. The echoes in the church lend such power to your voices.

I am a new fan. I have all the Noelle Sing We Clear albums your dad made, Ms. Breunig. Great big fan of John and Tony. I just finished listening to Recollections/revolutions CD borrowed from a friend who got to go to the Berkeley concert recently. I couldn't go as I no longer can drive at night. I love that you included "Few Days" from the CA gold rush and "Which side are you on?" one of the early union songs and the tune to Johnny O Braideslee with new words. It is originally pretty radical about a poacher in the king's forest. Those songs were highly political in the 18rh century-where poachers were hanged, transported to the colonies or imprisoned. Ewan Mccall recorded some ofthese songs on one of his many ballad albums. I would like the lyrics and liner notes for Recollctions/Revolutions but they are not available on the website yet.

Hello, I found your beautiful voices on the first nearly-warm day after 3 weeks of deadly Terror Time cold. We were the coldest place on earth, but today I saw robins again, and tonight, I found you. Tomorrow promises to be as warm as +2c, and I'm not ungrateful for it either.
Some things, like the Terror Time, are just meant to be. For Recusants, for Travelers, for me, and also thee. I'm so very grateful for the video you shared, and I'm glad at heart to have found you at the right time.

the only version i’ve known of for nearly 40
years is the one by the tannahill weavers. i somehow came across this version and i can’t stop listening to it. the vocal slides by lynn at 2:47 and 2:51 are absolutely gorgeous

If he could see the world 60 years after he wrote this song, rather than travelers fearing for winter we have hundreds of millions in India, Iran, Pakistan, the Pacific Islands, Africa...all fearing for unrelenting heat of summer thanks to the climate-breakdown. Maybe he wouldn't be surprised, it's the rich and their puppets driving this crisis now as it was then.

This has been haunting me all day. Such a heartfelt rendition, perfectly expressive of the poetry in my opinion. And your choice of performance venue reminds me that this incredible lack of humanity take place in the sight of a seemingly uncaring God, by self-professed Christians. And has been going on for centuries.

Sadly, any lack of ‘humanity’, is just that: a deficiency in humans. Which, even more sadly, afflicts a great many (but fortunately not all) humans; Both those of the self-professing Christian variety and all other varieties. Why are the choices we make the responsibility of God? Our actions are the product of our free will and choice. When we see good ones made, we say well done to our humanity. When we see bad ones made, we say where is God to intervene (and suddenly, even those who don’t profess to believe in Him tend to demand His intervention).
