Kent, you're the best. As a new turner I am so glad I found you. Thank you.
I think this explanation is the best I have seen on kick-backs - super job and thank you for sharing!
Another clear, helpful lesson. Thank you!
Like many here, I've watched more turning videos than I've turned bowls. Many are helpful (some not so much). None of them are as well-crafted teaching presentations as yours. Thank you so much Kent for your accessible blend of knowledge, experience and unselfconscious presentation of this material. The pleasure you take in teaching is very evident and that enriches the feeling in us novices that you really do understand what it means not to understand. As a retired teacher, I can think of no more useful qualification for teaching.
Finally! someone who "presents" their training in a way I can see and understand. If you look on most tutorials, they never really give a good VISUAL illustration of tool placement and tool presentation. Most people just blab about it, Thank You!!!!!!! Not to mention, this is the first and only "kickback" video I found. I thought it was just something that was happening to me. It was seriously causing my moral to plummet! Thanks again, I intend on watching more of these videos.
Eric,
Thanks for writing and sharing. We all go through these issues at one time or another. I', glad you found this video and it helped you. Thank you for your kind words. I try to make videos that will truly help my fellow turners. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
I couldn’t agree more. Rafsanjani is a famous guy, but your instruction is superior.
The best explanation on kick back that i have seen so far. Thank you Kent
Glad you enjoyed it! Happy Turning!
Gouge
Oh how I wish you put on a hands on class. I have already learned so much valuable information from you just from your videos. I really appreciate them!
Maybe one day! Thank you so much! Glad to help. Happy Turning!
Another winner, Kent! I always wondered about this and now I know!
Thank you, Thomas! Happy Turning!
Kent, I just want to say THANK YOU! I’m a retired teacher who is relatively new to turning. You have helped me solve many problems. You deserve some credit for the joy I’m finding in turning. I think you are as good a teacher as you are a turner. Sincerely, Carter
Thank you for your kind words, Carter! I'm honored to be a part of your turning experience. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent
Wait, that was a kickback? If I turned like that, I'd be delighted. When mine kicks it feels like the world is going to split in half. It's terrifying.
Ha! You're getting better everyday! ;) Happy Turning!
😂
So clear ,great lesson , I’m new to turning so your advice is well received,,,thx teacher👍
Wonderful! Thank you, and Happy Turning!

Thank you for your kindness and sharing your knowledge
Thank you, Robin! My pleasure! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Awesome explanation and very much appreciated! This is exactly what is happening to me!! In fact, when you showed how to "mess up" the bowl bottom it looks just like mine! Thank you so much!
So glad to help. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
My name is Jeff S. from Clovis, California. If I were chosen to win your contest, I would like to get the tree to wood course (but really any of the 3 is great to me). Thanks for all of the helpful information. I come from more spindle turning and bowls were a hit or miss proposition. You have opened my eyes a lot to better turning. Now that I have retired, I hope to have a lot more time to explore this hobby.
Thank you, Jeff! Happy Turning!
Thanks Kent, this solves some of the problems I have been having :)
Good to hear problems fading away. Happy Turning!
Tyvm. Very very helpful video. I am a 3 year rookie wood Turner. And got ripples, alot. Very excited to try this
Glad it was helpful! Happy Turning!
this is a great video,,,,you are the best at explaining
Thank you, kindly! Happy Turning!
Great advice, and thanks for pointing out the similarity in the base of the bowl..
Great explanation, thanks Kent.
Had a lot of kick backs when I first started and now seeing this, it all makes sense to why I had them issues.
Awesome Gonzalo Yay for ah-ha moments. Happy Turning!
Far and away the most lucid and comprehensive explanation of the effects of grain direction that I have seen! Thank you!
Wow, thank you! Much appreciated. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Best Video ever, trank you from Germany.
Wow, thanks! I'm glad you liked this. This issue causes so many headaches, I wanted to share the remedy with everyone! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
@@TurnAWoodBowl at the beginning you always make mistakes and mostly you don't know why. So this is a game changer. Turned two bowls yesterday and without any bad marks etc.
Now it's time to look for a good machine where I can turn the head sideways for bigger bowls.
Stay safe
Regards from beautiful Bavaria.
Short and packed with valuable information. Thank you. You are preparing me for my classes.
I'm smiling! Enjoy your classes! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you for the info I think this is going to help a lot now I understand what is causing the kickbacks
You're welcome. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Very informative Kent . Enjoyed learning!
Excellent, now I know why I get those frustrating kickbacks. I’m definitely trying this out next time I turn. Thanks
Glad to help! This one thing can relieve a lot of turning stress. Enjoy!
Seeing vs hearing really makes a difference. Thank you for sharing and demonstrating.

You are so welcome, June! Happy Turning!
Thank you for the training. I guess I need to start at the beginning and watch all of your informative tutorials.
Thanks Rebecca. There's a ton of knowledge in them ;) Happy Turning!
Thank you, I needed this video
Great, Kurt. Glad it helped. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks for the presentation. My first bowls were 12 segment ring bowls, and everything went fine. Then I tried a solid wood bowl and had some rough moments with kickback. Your vid has explained why that happened, and why a segmented bowl is easier - it's because it's basically all long grain, especially as the number of segments is increased.
Great job! It sounds like you are getting it. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
I have one month to go before I return to work after my spinal fusion surgery. While I have the time, I'm going to binge watch ALL of your turning videos!! Maybe twice!
Jon, fantastic! Enjoy and get well soon. Happy (soon to be) Turning!
Great video, I learned a lot.
Glad it was helpful!
Great teaching 👍
Thank you! 😃
Great explanation!
I mostly use a carbide disc so...
Relatively new to turning. I had too many catches and then found your site. Slowly going through you videos and site. Thanks, learning lots.
Welcome aboard…and SO LONG CATCHES!!! …well, hopefully! ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Wish I would have watched this video before I tried my 1st turn. The kick back about kicked my desire to keep trying. Can't wait to try again
Monica, I'm glad this helped. Be sure to see this video too czcams.com/video/txMcZ4yFOfA/video.html All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Nice video. Good instruction. I like the way you break it down.
I appreciate that!
I pay extremely close attention to the things you teach, you've helped me tremendously.
I just turned a bowl that was roughed out many months ago.
Everything was going well but had 3 or 4 kickbacks no matter how careful I am.
The last kickback sheared off my tenon just as I was doing final light passes. I had no way to turn it again to finish it off properly.
So I sanded by hand inside and out.
Small ridges still in there.
Very frustrating.
Answered a lot of questions, thank you
Happy to help! Happy Turning!
Another excellent instructional video Kent. So clearly explained with faultless close ups .
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you and Happy Turning!

Learned a lot from you in the last several months. You’ve helped me increase my productivity a lot.
I am loving your channel, recently discovered it, and while i love the arty creative watching, the teaching aspect of what you are doing is proving to be very valuable. keep it up please...
Thanks, Jon! Happy Turning!
I add to Eric’s earlier comment. Well done tutorial. I broke two large bowls b/c of poor bottom out technique. I believe this will help. Can’t wait to practice
Good stuff! Persistent practice makes perfection. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks so much for this video. Couldn’t figure out why this was happening at the bottom of a bowl I’m working on. Noticed it kicks back more frequently with a steeper angle of the inside curve of a bowl.
Great explanation. I have figured out over time to close the flute on those cuts, but very helpful to see why that was working.
Glad it helped! Happy Turning!
I had one kick back today and it broke off at the chuck tenon. Here to learn!
Yup, we all have to go through those learning lessons. Be sure to see my videos about the tenon also. Happy Turning!
Thanks, I just watched it. Since I do not have a good bowl jam, I was trying to make the tenon as close to a finished look with a hollowed out circle. I think that made the chucks grip weaker and it broke into the 1/2” tenon. I’ll look through your videos for finishing the base of bowls. I appreciate all of your helpful videos. I’m loving this hobby!
Extremely useful information thank you
This video was so helpful to me! Thank you!!!
I'm so glad! Thank you, William! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thank you hope that helps me you do good work
Thank you kindly, Clarence! Happy Turning!

Kent, you are such a great teacher! Thanks so much. I consider you my bowl turning mentor. I keep coming back with more questions and between your videos and written instructions you help me figure it out.
Thank you, Philip! I'm so glad to help. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
A great demo for us newbies. Keep up the great teaching. Many thanks 👍
My pleasure Stuart! Happy Turning!
Great content, information. Your delivery of the how and why really sets you apart. Others post “watch me” content, you post And deliver real information, the application and techniques, it makes sense. Thanks, we appreciate it ! 👍
Awesome! Thank you Brian! I'm so glad to help. All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks for this very informative video. This is very helpful and makes it safer to turn without the catches.
Glad it was helpful! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Thanks very much! Love your videos.
Thanks a ton!!!
@@TurnAWoodBowl I'm transitioning from using carbide tipped lathe tools to the more standard HSS gouges, skews, etc because they're so much more versatile, and I think I would have given up if it weren't for your videos. I was having a terrible time trying to use a bowl gouge until I watched your videos about how to properly use them. I still need practice but I'm getting there. :)
Thank you, you are a great help
Happy to help! Happy Turning!
As always, excellent training and tips. Thank you

Thanks, Joesph! Well, I'm glad you're here now. Enjoy!
Thanks Kent for helping to solve some old demons I have had in turning bowls. Maybe now it will be easier and also maybe less sanding to chase them out. Thanks for the ever informative videos. Cheers, Tom
You're welcome, Thomas. All the best to you!
Thank you for that info. Your explanation is excellent. Especially with the lines on the bowl blank. Subscribed!
Awesome, thank you! Welcome and Happy Turning!
great video thanks for sharing your tips.
Very helpful, thanks.
Perfect, exactly what I needed to learn. I still don't understand how you knew four months ago that I would need this information.
Thanks!
LOL Great to hear! Why? Because I was there several years ago struggling with this same issue. LOL Happy Turning!
Well that explains the issues I have been having. Thank you so much for this video. I definitely will be more aware of my approach from this day forward. Love your videos. They have all been very informative and help us poor novice recognize what we are doing wrong and what to do to correct it. Thanks again. Keep up the awesome teaching.
