We took this video to show you how to replace the valve cover gasket on a BMW e46 6 cylinder. It is the same from 1999-2005 for all models equipped with M52 or M54 engines. 323i 325i 328i 330i.
Our valve cover gasket was leaking oil on the exhaust and it was smoking and smelling like burnt oil.

Must be really useful having three hands!
To make video more valuable, consider adding torque value for the assembly and if sequence of tightening plays a role in creating a tight seal. Thanks.
best demo video i have seen yet. love all the detail and that u point out everything
Love you guys. Your videos are super helpful for the 05 BMW 330ci m. Thanks from Minnesota for all your help. It's greatly appreciated! 👍

Thanks for the video Vlad, it was really helpful, I was going to go to a mechanic, now I think I will do it myself.
Good video. ! Very simple and easy explanation
Excellent video. Saved me lots of time. Thanks!
i have low engine compression on cyl 4 and 6. do i need to do the valve sealings? or change the induction coils?
@ eviloctober use gasket silicone to help you keep the gasket in place. Apply gasket silicone in the grove and then place the gasket.
Into the Grove of the valve cover? Or where you place the gasket into the head?
Thanks man, really helpful.
Thank you very much fir the video great work!!
is there a tightening procedure? how much foot lbs?

If your gasket is bad, can it cause the oil to leaks when you're on a hill and cause the burning rubber smell coming thou the central vent?
+The401Kidd yes it is very possible. Just make sure that it is the gasket and not something else burning. Once you feel the smell through the center vent, open the hood, you should be able to see a small amount of smoke from the oil that is dripping on the exhaust. What about the wire that goes into the cover.... I dont wanna yank on it and break it, and also how to properly remove the cover to the ignition coil wires from the cover of the head???
well i will check back in a day or so too see if anyone posts any thing.
cool colour
On my wife's 2002 325ci it begins to run extramly bad after it heats up. In fact it appears to begin missing and sometimes smoke and smell as if it is burning oil. I was thinking it maybe the valve guides but after looking at this video I was wondering if it may need a new valve cover gasket set. Have you heard of the 325 series doing what mine is doing and what may be the reason. Thanks
yes oil prob leaked into the well where the spark plug is.. pull each plug as teh car is running to see which has no change in the running engine... could be coil pack too
I have bought a kit and it came with some Grommets. Can someone please explain/tell me where they go.
Very good..........
I have a 2004 bmw330xi just purchased the car I smell oil from time to time I look down on side of the block and I don't see nothing there it just only when I come to a stop at a drive-thru it sometime
My project for tomorrow
Great Job Guys and Great Video. I did this simple repair in my 2005 ZHP E46 with ease thanks to you.
I have a new Project. The exhaust manifold seems to be cracked. I need to remove it maybe weld it or replace it. Replacing is expensive I was told that it can be repaired. What do you say???
+Jose Antonio Oyola it is not very complicated to remove the headers. You can give it a try and if it does not work then replace them. You can find great deals on ebay. Just make sure that you do not drive it for a long time like that because you might get some exhaust gas in the cabin through the cabin filter.
+World Mechanics that's a great point. Didn't think about it getting in the cabin.
Oooook, need a little advice
just changed my rocker cover gasket as like on here,.... only I've a 318i 4 cylinder.. it's all been put back together & to start with there was tapping.. now seems to have stopped
however there is smoke/stream coming from the lower back of the engine... could this be oil burning on the exhaust or something more the car is also idling roughly & at 1 moment the revs raise from 500 idle to 1500 again at idle... without me doing anything.... I'm getting pretty concern.. however I've only changed the gasket...
this was due to me finding the dip stick almost empty without any warning lights etc... I'm thinking I need major help
Mal P mine is shaking too 🙀
Best use of the English language I’ve ever heard no homo I can listen to this guy talk forever 😂
great info
Zoot Suit Thank you. We are glad it was helpful!
I'm planing on changing my head gasket aswell , do I have to flush the oil first before proceeding?
i dont think so. just let the car sit for a while, so most of the oil reaches the oil pan.
oh. 3 years ago. lmao
Hey i have a 328i 1999 and ive realized when i park my car and turn it off there is a small bit of smoke coming from the engine almost like steam. And it has a small smell of burning. And under the car where the engine is abit of oil and coolant is leaking buy very very small leak , is this the same thing as ur video? Thanks
Corey Alper that sounds like a head gasket. Did you ever figure it out?
is this the same for coolant leak in gasket
+Raul Serrano sorry for the late reply. no it is not. The headgasket is very complicated procedure and time consuming
I took all the bolts off but the cover still won't come off, any thoughts guys??
i have a question, i did all this got a new gasket and when i go to put it back on the gasket keeps falling out how do i keep the gasket put? crazy glue? just kidden i know not glue but the damn thing keeps falling down its impossible especially around the spark plug holes.if any one has any suggestions i would be greatful.
eviloctober gasket glue?

I started learning about motor since I realized Icould save thousands by doing myself, the bad thing is that my car is a 323bmw00'. I have a struggle every time I change even I scrow..I changed a lot of parts trying to fix 2 misfiring in number 1 and 4 if You start counting them from back to the front of the car.new gas pump and filter, sparkplugs and coils, head gasket, crank sensor, potions sensor and another one that I don't even know what it sense, I dont have a read when I put it in a scanner. I use fuel inyector cleaning, a seafoam into the airintake ..secundary airpump looks ok.. Nothing of this help a bit.. What can I do next? I learned a lot watching your videos, reason I think you know much more than other people..my car just reach 2k miles but it looks a lot younger, with the exception that shakes and don't pass the 80miles/hours.
nel2171 mine shakes too any advice
First thing you do is open the hood okay, otherwise it will be harder to fix it! Lol
Way easier then my 350z
Am I seeing things or does this guy has three hands.lol
So where is the "E46 valve cover gasket replacement." These guys only have a video on "Valve cover REMOVAL." Serious Screw up, if you follow this video, as there is ZERO discussion on Where and WHY to RTV, But I guess if you just slab a ton of rtv and torque it down to "Oh yeah another FAIL" I hope the 171k Viewers found a good M54 VCG video.
the video was INCOMPLETE, you did not show the installation, SPECIALLY how much RTV paste you have to use in the areas around the VANOS. Thumbs down for me.
Would have been more informative if you'd explained the correct pattern to tighten the bolts. Video is for removal only. Waste of time.
