I usually love your videos but with this one, I think it puts a lot of people off being vegan in Spain. My mother is from Madrid, and I live in Barcelona/London - I have been vegan for 15 years so living in/out of Spain has not been a problem. Come to Barcelona, being vegan is not an issue at all. Too many options! The last time I went to Madrid, there were many places that either began or were happy to adapt to a vegan meal. Also, it is good to also enjoy food without always trying to imitate fake meat - veg and vegan options are so yummy without "needing" to be "like meat", even when there are some great meat-alternative Spanish companies out there now - Some olive oil, local herbs/spices, and fresh local veg... done lol! Spain has some AMAZING tastes for vegan options. The quality of their non-meat/fish produce will amaze you. In my opinion, the BEST produce (veg/fruits/etc) in Europe that I have tried so far, at a good local price... so no need to imitate meat anyway. Spanish food can easily be adapted too. Thanks for the video :)
I agree with the sentiment here. The problem with meat eaters making “I went vegan for …” type videos is the lack of knowing and the lack of education. When you go vegan the first year or so is almost about re-educating yourself on food and how to enjoy food. And once you get past that, it opens up a whole new world of delicious vegan whole foods. Processed vegan “meats” is just as bad for your health as regular processed meats.
Still, I think videos like this and the way health was highlighted can only be a good thing.
And also I’m visiting Madrid in a few weeks so it was brilliant to see those vegan spots 🌱
Beautifully said. I'll get my passport...
I lived in Barcelona and there were plenty of options for vegans. But not usually at tapas bars. Better choices at the many vegetarian (or veg friendly) restaurants around the city (like Honest Greens, Vegetaila, etc.).
I have no idea where anyone would be "put off" from being vegan in Spain by watching this video.
He was just showing how it would feel like from his specific perspective.
You might want to tone that holier-than-thou attitude a bit, that's what's really off-putting here.
Also, animals are hurt just by being a human being in our modern societ, sadly. A lot of the products you buy are either directly or indirectly made from hurting animals. Vaccines like the polio vaccine for example were tested on animals. Even the clothes (shoes, handbag, belt, etc.) you wear probably hurt some animals.
And "imitating meat" is actually a good idea if that results in people eating less meat. There's been a lot of progress in that field in the past decade.
It's precisely this lack of nuance and understanding-compounded with being condescending-that demotivates people from minimizing their meat intake.
@@youssef16844 speaking as a vegan and lover of Spain, I understand the point, going anywhere you may struggle to find places to eat is naturally a put off. Hence all the British style pubs, cafes all day English Breakfast bars.
Some found it desirable to have. (Cringe)
But, I found Tapas a great option and if you take the time to learn the language, most often you are treated as friends, even family - people are delighted to find ways to feed you and if anything it doubled the pleasure of eating out. No matter how remote.
But the global surge in plant only eating has not left Spain lagging behind, especially in the cities it's not so much a problem as an exciting exploration.
For anyone interested, Italy, France and Portugal are changing the food bars rapidly, too.
For many Spanish vegan recipes follow "Spain on a fork". Albert is really good at what he does. We spent the summer in Europe and spent several weeks in Spain and made it work. I suppose it's easier to accomplish when there's health and ethics fueling the endeavor. 8 years of practice also helps. Don't fret, it can be done!
Spain on a Fork is fantastic for healthy dishes that are vegan.
Thank you for the tip!
We visited Spain in September and was VERY happy with this amazing vegan restaurant in Granada. It’s name is Wild Food. It was one of the most amazing meals I had in all of Spain! You absolutely must try this restaurant! It’s so good that you don’t even miss the meat.
very cool
I was actually amazed by the number of vegetarian and vegan restaurants that I encountered on my last trip to Barcelona. But I'm with Yoli, the produce in Spain is fantastic, you really don't need to make it taste like meat to enjoy it. AND I LOVE MEAT! I think we all need to be a little more cognizant of what we put into our bodies in general. ❤️
Just got back from Spain, Catalan region. We are mostly plant based from the US. We did eat meat/cheese/milk in Spain. But our favorite ALL time dish we had was espinacas con garbanzos from the merkats. Who knows if they were cooked with any animal products. If you do keep eating vegan from time to time, may I recommend focusing on protein from beans/legumes/tofu. This will help your satiety. Buen provecho. 🙌
One of my friends was a big meat eater for many years but he reached the point of critical cholesterol and blood pressure levels and he is now totally vegan. I guess you can reach a point where the body just can't take certain foods anymore and then there's no choice but to adjust. A balance is always a good thing.
My husband met you guys in casa toni that day! One of the 3 fellas sitting in the corner by the window.... Thanks for having a photo taken with him xxx
Thanks for saying hi!
Hello Sarah, how are you doing today.
James, I was vegan for 5 years and organized a vegan group for support and to educate local stores, bakeries and restaurants. 14 years later and this city has become extremely vegan friendly. It wasn’t easy and plenty of people were antagonistic. Now it is fully normalized. I must say you appeared more rested and your skin looked very healthy over the course of the week.
I'm a vegan and I've just been to Madrid; I ate really well there! There were some amazing vegan restaurants such as Distrito Vegano, Mad Mad Vegan, and Freedom Cakes where you are breakfast.
happy to know
Hello Ailsa, how are you doing today.
hello! did you find any good omni restaurants with good vegan options? we'll be going in may and my partner is vegan.. I am not.
@@phin2win Well, yo can eat vegan food, can't you?
Do they not have garbanzos con espinacas in Madrid? That's my go to and they are usually really go here in Sevilla
I'm vegetarian and come to Spain because of the amazing food options I have there! My husband is not veggie, but we both love (like, crave and talk about almost weekly!) this amazing burger place in Madrid, Viva Burger. It's vegan I highly recommend it to anyone going to Madrid!
As an omnivore married to a part time vegan who falls off that wagon to her baco-pescatarian culinary preferences…..I think you did a fine job of presenting this side of modern gastronomy. The ‘fake’ meats should be judged on their own, and not the reflexive comparison to their animal based counterparts. I think you were very respectful to the various sensibilities that this topic encompasses. Well done.
Cheers James!
You did amazing with your spanish, it's always gratifying finding a non-native speaker that's put so much effort !
If you are looking for another challenge, try living as a coeliac in Spain. It’s doable but it ain’t easy.
Yeah, that sounds tough. I hear it's easier in Italy.
I hear ya. The bread is awesome. I eat a gluten free diet but I am not celiac. I am able to eat the bread in Europe with less problems than in the USA.
When I was in Madrid about 3 years ago, I was surprised at how many delicious vegan restaurants and vegan options there were. We are planning a trip there again soon and are excited for the many vegan options we have found. Happy to share where and pictures as well. The app Happy cow was super helpful to finding local vegan options.
¡Hola! Interesting video and some helpful and reassuring comments below confirming that vegetarians and vegans won’t starve in Spain. As a vegan of around 3-4 years, I don’t recommend ultra processed fake meats and vegan cheese, no wonder meat eaters feel sorry for us if they’ve tried these. Lots of veggies, beans and lentils etc make for a far healthier and satisfying diet IMO. I’ve only just started to learn Spanish and plan a trip in 4-5 years time when I can speak the language a bit. Hopefully there will be a few more vegan options by then😊. Incidentally, Cava is usually vegan I believe. Preferable to Prosecco IMO🍾
Yes, this is so true.
In Spain you cannot go into a random restaurant and expect them to have vegan food. You have to plan where to go, check if the place have something vegan AND decent. In Madrid, there are some vegan restaurants (which I generally don't like, with a few exceptions) and just a few with vegan and not vegan food on the menu. This is a bit of a pain when you want to eat out and all or most of your friends are not vegan. However, things are getting better. On the plus side, eating at home as a vegan in Spain is easy and delicious because of the quality and variety of ingredients.
Great video and personally a topic I'm very interested in. I'm planning to move to Spain in a couple of years and I'm coming from a country which has a similar issue of being heavily reliant on meat -- Japan.
The good thing that Japan has going for it is the rice consumption, so it's easy to make vegan dishes around rice but there's a similar issue as in Spain where there is virtually no vegan options in restaurants, vegan meat isn't available in grocery stores, and countless ingredients are made mixed with meat products. So I've wanted to become fully vegan here for a while now but it's just really really hard.
It seems once I move to Spain, I should expect a similar experience but I am encouraged hearing the talk from the Spanish vegan woman and seeing the vegan store you went to. Thanks for covering this!
Some years ago it was impossible to find things like vegan meat in a normal spanish supermarket but nowadays you can find some options. Of course you won't find in a normal supermarket the same variety that if you go to a vegan store like the one in the video (and those stores are quite pricey), but you can find things like vegan hot dogs, seitán or vegan chopped in any normal supermarket.
I think the main problem here in Spain would be the restaurants, if you go out to dinner with non vegan friends you may find yourself in a situation like what we see at the beginning of the video.
First food video of yours I've had reason to watch. Good job.
Your Spanish was really good! I really appreciate this video, I became vegan 12 years ago and I haven't visit Spain since then, I am glad to know that I will find more alternatives than I thought.
I wanted to also suggest a video topic that I think many people might be interested in! Life in Spain = Noisy neighbours. I can't tell you how many times I see posts on social media from visitors to Spain and people from abroad that have funny and strange stories about this and how they had to adapt - Also, with the older flats/houses there is less noise reduction with the walls. Another example - How friendly neighbours are in Spain and what is expected etc. I know you mentioned this briefly a few videos back so it came to my mind to bring it up because sometimes people always compare their neighbours in their home country with the way things are in Spain when renting or buying a place. I would love your thoughts on your own experiences - Spanish neighbourhood do's/don'ts 101-style. Thanks again!
Yes! I agree that would be great 😊 I live in such a quiet neighbourhood in Spain where there’s a mix of full time residents (all Spanish) and people with second homes from Murcia city and Madrid. My husband & I threw a party last summer but felt we needed to stop at midnight because it seemed so loud (the neighbours had popped in earlier & most had gone by midnight), however, I’m sure they wouldn’t have minded if we’d continued. I couldn’t ask for more friendly, caring neighbours. They all look out for ‘los ingleses’ and we swap our traditional dishes regularly with them.
And please don't forget programmes about the Canary Islands!!!
absolutely loved this video! such an interesting topic, especially the conversation with miriam. keep up the great work. i have no idea why but your channel is the only one i watch religiously!!!
What I learned from the video? Yolie's haircut is cute and your daughter is cute too!
haha
Hi James and Yoly, stumbled across your videos a few months back and have been steadily working my way through them. Love Spain and love the light you shine on such an amazing country! Heading over in July so we are hoping to put some of your videos to good use! Cheers!
Espinacas con garbanzos , sopa de lentejas , paella huertana, patatas con puerros , pa am tomaquet , hongos de diferentes preparaciones, ensalada de verduras, etc ….
I'm a bit in a same situation like you (Valencia) and I have to admit, your spanish has improved a lot compared with older viedos, congrats 👍 And yes, although I allready speak a couple of languages, including french that I learned as a child, it was/is harder than I thought in the beginnings.
The best thing you could do for you and your family. Plant based will show its benefits if you follow through. You can do it. Your life will change. The transition with avocados, potatoes, and loads of fruit helps.
Rubbish advice. Sorry mate.
Super entertaining video! Just wanted to say, my wife and I just spent 3 days in Madrid and went to 5 places you recommended in previous videos and they were all amazing, so thank you. Casa del Abuelo was a highlight, along with the Cod in Casa Revuelta. May we suggest you check out a restaurant called Macarena. Our friend from Madrid took us there and it was really great modern Spanish cuisine. We think you would love it.
Love watching your videos. Always very helpful even though I'm a Spaniard.
I did a whole food plantbase meals for over a year and it was difficult at first and tried different vegan substitution on meat and didn't really like them. I I preferred to do was more stews with lentils, chickpeas for example. If I want a sandwich or burger I would prefer grilled vegetables then put that in a bun. There are options but in Spanish restaurants it is difficult. Oh and the great thing I don't need insulin for my diabetes since cutting out animal products!
Love your videos and the genius code for the language. Thank you so much.
Such fun! Great video!
Great video, liked it a lot. Thanks!
New subscriber. Thank you for sharing. Greetings from a Portuguese
Ajoblanco. Salmorejo sin carne. Sopa cachorreña. Castañas. Comida del Maghreb… cuscus con legumbres. Dulces cacher pareve… use margarine, Turkish places, zeytinyagli. Also Buddhist places Chinese.
As a vegan shortly to travel to Spain for the first time, this video did not make me worried at all. I'm also a kiwi and although things are constantly improving, I'm very used to researching online before I go out to eat. However, there will be times that I will not be in a big city and it might be a little more difficult, so I did take some comfort that you did pretty well to find nourishment, prior to some research. I'm a little sad now that Madrid is not on my list, but I dare say that Barcelona will have plenty of delicious options.
I enjoyed watching you attempt to replace meat for your carnivore friend, it was funny and relatable. Fake meats don't tend to do very well on their own, although there are definitely a few yummy exceptions, they still don't taste exactly like their animal based counterpart.
Definitely when cooking at home, one can find a lot more tasty meals that don't need faux meat.
My husband and I found several vegan spots in València, therefore, we feel optimistic about our upcoming trip! I am Tex-Mex, so I totally get the lack of options. Thank you for the tip on the wine!
Me encantan tus vídeos, James! Espero verte a ti y a Yoli algún día por Madrid! Un saludo!
Hi James and Yoli, I'm not vegan but enjoyed this video, especially with the Spanish segment. I'm still trying to learn more Spanish, even at 77 and it was good with the subtitles! Hasta la proxima..
Great video. I encourage you to explore Madrid’s vegan cuisine a bit more. Santa y Pura was my favorite vegan place in Madrid.
Will check it out!
Your Spanish sounds amazing! Tell me how long it took you to be at that level? The video is mega natural I like it a lot, thank you.
Hii! I've been in Spain on fasting days (I'm Hindu) where we eat only vegetarian food and I found many things that I could have still eaten like tostada, mushrooms, padron peppers, patatas, spinach with chickpeas, and a vegetable paella etc. I guess because of eating vegan/vegetarian meals for weeks and months makes it easy for us to spot things on a menu that we can eat. Thanks for sharing places we may need to visit if we are fasting.
Hello Roxanne, how are you doing today.
I love Phil he's always so honest 😂
Thanks for this video, I having been thinking of just giving Spain a miss on my European travels as its always looked impossible to be vegan there, I might reconsider now. Greetings from Oz
Hello Martin, how are you doing today.
Si alguna vez hablamos español tan bien como tú en la entrevista, lo habremos conseguido oficialmente :D :D
Your Spanish was great!
I spent my new year's in Zaragoza, and there were actually a lot of restaurants that sold vegetarian or vegan food. I was surprised - I didn't try any of them since I do eat meat, but most of them had great ratings!
I'm vegetarian, not vegan and been visiting Spain (starting point is Barcelona) every year except during the pandemic. Thankfully I have no problem with food, even paella. 😚
Fantastic. Great video. ❤
Hello beautiful, how are you doing.
Thank you for sharing this! :)
Absolutely brilliant - gracias x
Good on you for trying and for showing us places to eat in Madrid. I eat Vegan 3 or 4 days a week and Vegetarian at least 2 days. The other days I will sometimes eat either Chicken or Seafood although I am eating less of that these days. I use spices to pimp up the taste. One thing I have never enjoyed and avoid like the plague is the fake meat. It just does not appeal to me in any way/shape form. I have enjoyed "Spain on a Fork" as Albert shows Spanish Vegetarian or vegan recipes and I have not eaten one I did not enjoy.
This was just great. Very entertaining and thought provoking. We've been watching and enjoying your videos as we prep for a trip over in April. A question my wife has: can you get green veggies in Spanish restaurants? Many menus look singularly untainted by something as simple as a plate of spinach or green beans or even some peas (or a salad that contains more than an ambivalent amount of lettuce?). Are we just not looking in the right places?
You can usually get a salad, but it may not be very exciting (in traditional places).
When we were in Malaga in 2019 we went to a local chain bakery by our hostel and I was able to get a good bit of veggies with my seafood for a very inexpensive meal . I think our total bill was under 10.00 USA dollars.
Also what is nice about hostels is you can buy food at the local mercado and fix it yourself . I know my familia also did that at the air b and b we have stayed at in Malaga.
Haha it might require an eye for those things but yes, you can definitely get veggies. Try pimientos de padrón (in most tapas bars) or pisto (often served with a fried egg on top). Flores de alcachofa (often served with ham bits on top) and parrillada de verduras. Setas al ajillo also a must!
Loved this one. It just shows you that whatever your dietary needs are you can find them in Spain.
Thank you! And I totally agree
It seems to me that a lot of super famous dishes that are mostly plant-based like lentejas, fabada and judiones de la granja, and others could be modified to be vegan without being "fake" like the fake meat. I think with a bit more spice and some ingenuity, these dishes can be transformed into versions that are very close to the original ones.
James ...fue un gustazo este video por verte hablando español...por favor usa mas el español en tus videos.. gracias.
Tu Español is Very good My first language is Spanish. Even the accent that you do as at Castilian It's very good for being a New Zealand person I am impress👍
👏👏👏👌exactly my experience when I went to Madrid after going plant based!!! It was even harder as I traveled with my friend, who wasn't vegan - and wanted to eat all traditional food... I survived on patatas bravas, cerveza and was basically carrying food I bought in supermercados with me...
The fruits and veggies in Spain taste sooo much better than in England tho! and churros are vegan! I had them with vegan hot chocolate!
Good work on this vlog! I really love Spain but the traditional cuisine - definitely meat heavy!
It looked like a fun experiment and fun video to make. I’m unsatisfied as a vegetarian who does eat dairy. I look forward to trying more food in this beautiful country.
I love your clips .
I'm impressed by your Spanish. Something is different about your whole style of presentation and filming, there's much improvement. I really enjoyed this video, thanks.
James - your Spanish is so impressive! You should be proud. Bravo.
Fun video-- but there's a difference between vegan and plant based eating. The latter is vegetables, fruit, beans, legumes and grains. All so wonderfully available in Spain. Vegan seems to be processed food to taste like meat, dairy, fish. But, it's great to introduce the whole idea of cutting out meat, etc. I think, the vegan movement in the US gradually became plant based, at least for some. Or maybe it was the opposite. :) Anyway, lots of ways to eat. Thanks for the tour!
Mmm...not quite. Plant-based and vegan is the same when it comes to food but vegan encompasses a whole way of living that avoids wearing animal products as well as using then in cosmetics, for example. Plant-based is just the food part of veganism. I hope this makes sense. You can be vegan eating just legumes or vegan eating just processed fake meats.
Thanks for making this video.
For your next challenge I dare you to go vegan for another week, but this time you have to go gluten free as well. Impossible some might say, and it does pose a few problems, but having spent a few weeks in Almeria last summer, it is indeed doable. Another excellent video, thanks to you all for bringing Spain to life.
I chuckled at that guy in the beginning of the video that said about vegan eating "Eso no es natural, tio" (that's not natural, dude). Eating vegan requires intentionality. You are required to plan your day with foods that will have nutritional value and are also filling (containing fiber). Eating at regular restaurants won't usually achieve that goal, unless they specify vegan options in their menu. That's why a vegan cook book can provide ideas for pre-planned meals that are appetizing and also achieve nutritional requirements. Legumes (especially high in protein like soybean and chickpeas) cooked without adding ham or meat, grains like quinoa, 100% millet bread (that is gluten free, dairy free and vegan), and of course, rice and potatoes. There are plant based burgers at the supermarket or specialty market, heura (a plant-based meat made with soy and created here in Barcelona, Spain), tofu (another soy-based food that can be added to soups, grilled with veggies and added to salads), mushrooms (especially big portabella ones which are awesome when grilled). Not to mention, you can eat any fruit you want. It will be extremely hard to be a vegan and go out to regular restaurants for satisfying options. I have noticed similar experiences here in Valencia (although we do have a few vegan restaurants and they are very busy. Maybe more will open).
Totally requires intentionality! Good point
Hello Mizgina, how are you doing today .
Oh, the peppers in Spain taste SOooooo fantastic, I miss them! and the patatas! and tomatoes! congrats on your adventure James. There were vegan eateries popping up in Barcelona before I left, so maybe it's a matter of time.😊
ps. your spanish is 🙌👍wow.
Patatas a lo Pobre are awesome... though I always add chorizo to it haha
Allioli isn't supposed to have egg. It's "all i oli" which is garlic and olive oil in Valenciano, those are the only two ingredients it should always have.
Ooh man you missed some opportunities there, like paella de verduras, still an entertaining video and thank you for making the effort!
This is so funny. My husband and I are doing 90 percent plant based . If I eat meat it is fish and that has been twice a month unless recently we were invited to dinner at a friends house and theys served pizza with sausage. I was so hungry I just ate it. Living in Denver Co area it is easy to do plant based and vegan if you can afford to eat out. We do have some fab grocery stores like Natural Grocers where everything is GMO free, and organic. Our grocery bill went down so so much when we quit buying beef , chicken and ham which is another motivator. We did this for health reasons. We do eat organic . I thought your Spanish was really good. I agree a tutor is the best thing to do .
Good luck Taraz with the diet. Sounds great!
Hello Taraz, how are you doing today .
@@spainrevealed yeah thanks. My husband and I feel better overall . Meat causes inflammation and makes the body acidic . So overall we have been feeling better. We did invest in getting an insta pot and an airfryer which has helped with the cooking. I also started using my Vita Mix a lot and that has helped. I did vegan years and years ago before it was popular but I did not do it right and got allergic to everything. Since that time I have studied nutrition and Acupuncture and have learned how to balance things better. Recetas de gri
has some fab recetas as does Spain on a Fork.
Very nice video!!!! Well done James (Yolly - you are looking AMAZING. Well done!)
When I moved to Spain in 2019, I was the first of my family to be here and hence lived on my own.
I decided to change to vegetarian lifestyle for a period of 6/7 months and felt amazing!!!!
I then decided to do full-on vegan and honestly, I felt incredible after a year.
And then my family joined me after two and a half years. 🥰
Four years later = 2023! I now do vegan Monday to Friday and join my family with a Spanish diet on Saturdays and Sundays.
Fair is Fair!!!!
I continue to feel AMAZING!
Everything in Balance is my belief.
Sounds like a great approach Julia
Hello julia, how are you doing today.
For the verduras rebozadas, did you ask if they were prepared with egg to make the rebozado stick?
Great work James. I have a friend who lives in Asturias who has no trouble being vegan at all. There are no fewer than 10 vegan of vegan friendly restos in her town!
You're amazing, James!!! Good job! Enjoy your vegan diet😋😋😋
Great interview, great Spanish!
Reading through the comments here, it is obvious Vegans can find options in the big cities. However, as I expand out the radius of my culinary journeys from the small pueblo where I live, a vegan will be hard pressed to find much more than salad or a fuente de verduras a la plancha.
For me, this video was less about “to be or not to be” Vegan but more about building awareness about the daily food choices we make and inclusion of more vegetables in our meals.
Thanks!
Can you please do a video on gluten free in Spain? I am going in July and am celiac, I have heard its quite easy to eat GF in Spain in comparison to Vegan because many Spanish people are diagnosed celiacs also. Any thoughts?
SO INTERESTING!
What a great video 👍
Fascinating
Really interesting and entertaining video. I'm not vegan or vegetarian, but quite eye-opening.
Cheers!
I love Phil's honesty.
Excelente video, pero porque no has hecho mas videos en Español? Hace falta que emparejes la creacion de vlogs en ambos idiomas se extrañan esos videos de corazo. Saludos familia!
This was again a wonderful video.💞💞💞🌺🌺🌺 I have celiac disease. Would you mind adventuring into a gluten free video? 🍷🍷🍼cheers to all three of you. Stay safe and well💞💞💞🌺🌺🌺
Casa Toni never disappoints! 🍷
I will say, I have cut down on the amount of animal product I consume but I cannot give it up totally.
Loved this video….. polverones……how I miss them! Yum. Can’t imagine being vegan….. but I know it’s the healthier way. Love to you all. ❤
Well first of all your Spanish was great and secondly this was very interesting. My daughter and her family are vegan so every Sunday, family holidays and any birthdays I look for vegan options for them and it’s interesting how much easier it is here in the US to find places that cater to vegans. More surprising is the lack of vegan wine that you found because the majority of wine I purchase is Spanish or Italian and most of it is vegan. Although I’m not vegan I like my wine to be. No need to process my wine with clarifiers that are animal based. Besos a Yoly y Lucia.
Hello Virginia, how are you doing today.
Hi James Big fan! Enjoyed the episode made me laugh. I am vegan for many many years. I’ve spent a lot of time in Spain and the first time I was in Madrid as a vegan was really entertaining.
I had to accept the best I would get was to be a transient vegetarian.
My last trip in 2022 I was very happy with the many vegan options actually.
In the north while on the Caminó believe it or not there were alot of options.
Pamplona was very impressive for vegan options among other cities. Options such as mushroom Pinxos
, patatas Bravas were fantastic. I did enjoy the episode made me laugh a lot.
Honestly though when traveling through Europe had to flex a bit vegetarian on occasion.
#vegansinspain
Transient vegetarian! I like that term haha
Everyone does'nt have to go full vegan. Cutting down is the important part. I tried no-meat-november 4 year ago, and just didn't se the point of starting eating meat again.
I struggled with satiety for the longest time. I upped my fat intake along w/protein. Keeps me fuller much longer and doesn't spike my blood sugar. Vegan is healthy, but make sure to get your healthy fats(avocados, nuts)for satiety.
Berenjena con miel de caña. Alcachofas salteadas sin jamon. Dulce de membrillo. Pan amb tomat.
I use Lingoda and would like to know at which level you are currently at? You Spanish is worlds better than mine, so would like to know where I’m aiming to get to a similar level 😂
I have tried a vegan diet in the UK for a month for health reasons but I found that being a vegan was costing more money than buying meat as most places have increased the price of non-meat and artificial meat products because they have become more popular. I found it ridiculos to pay more than three pounds for a "chicken breast" that was made of beans when a tin of beans was only 40p. However when i come to spain i treat it like a food holiday, i look forward to eating everywhere, I was in Madrid three weeks ago and ate my way from place to place haha. San gines churros were a must every day.
You said check in with you in six months to see how you're doing... It's been six months James!
Ensalada tomate en Posada del Dragón esta muy rico
My husband and I are planning on visiting Spain later this year, he is Jewish and won’t eat pork or seafood, I’m feeling like this could be a struggle for him, me however I eat everything 😅
My sister was in Barcelona recently. She is a Jew too and she did ok. I will say I heard all the pastries are made with lard. I think I saw that on a youtube channel . I think Paul Hollywood said that?
Yeah, James! You find a way to eat more healthier this time in Spain. I didn't know why Spainsh people obsesssed with meat. These vegans foods in Spain looks so good that you will have never try them. Great video!
Hi James, it seems to me that at first you didn't really take on this "challenge" the proper way. You can't really expect to find many vegan options in the kind of places that you prefer to go to regularly. Old man bars, neighbourhood "menús del día" and traditional tapas spots are not exactly the most vegan friendly places you can find in Spain. Unless that is exactly what you wanted to highlight, though.
Most vegans that I know either stick to the places where they know they can find eating options they'll enjoy or do some research in advance through specialized websites to find new spots. And not many of them seem to care/know about vegan wine or beer either.
All in all, being vegan takes a lot of work! And in Spain even more!
It's also a VERY different experience being vegan in a big city like Madrid or Barcelona, where you have tons of options as well as plenty of specialized restaurants and shops than being one in a smaller city or town, let alone in the countryside.
