  • The Canon EOS R was voted one of the most disappointing cameras in 2018 to be released. I myself almost wrote it off as not even an option. Short end of this story is that I now LOVE it.

My first comment ever on CZcams. So this is a big deal.
This was a beautiful video end to end. Cinematography is beautiful.
I’ve subscribed and hope to see more like this.
I have a huge interest in photography and have watched countless videos and read many articles. I’m leaning to the EOS R as my first camera.
    Thanks for the video!

Ji Drztgc Sony has done a great job winning people over, and I agree that a lot of those newly converted and established peeps are getting emotional about their brand loyalty. It’s all about choosing the best tool for you and the job irregardless of brand.

Thanks for dropping your opinions on this camera. I appreciated hearing your take....as I'm a wedding, engagement and portrait photographer myself. I'll be upgrading my 5D Mark II's soon and have bypassed upgrading before for the seemingly "minor" improvements. I think I'm far enough behind now to bite on an upgrade. I'm still making money and producing great images with my 5D Mark II's but I desire some of the benefits of a newer camera. : articulating screen, better ISO performance, more focus points, face tracking, lighter weight/smaller size, better quality photos (dynamic range, image quality, Megapixels). Thanks again for the review ;o)

Great review. I took the plunge with the EOS-R. My primary work food photography both in studio and on site. The articulating screen is critical for me. I can compose my shots on screen. In addition, all of my shoots require overhead 90 degree shoots and being able to swing the screen around is great. The focus system if sweet.

Thank you for this review; using my EOS R more than my Sony; the more I use it and customize the buttons and the ring; it allowed me to take excellent photos faster and with more enjoyment. Sony and Canon and even some of the newer cameras are so good it leaves just the marginal personal opinion(s); we are all blessed to be living now to have access to all these new tools. BTW i changed the * button as well; "happy"

This makes me even more excited for my EOS R to arrive tomorrow! I have never owned a camera with dual card slots and it's never been an issue. I primarily shoot portraits and fashion so it's not hard to reshoot most of the time and of it's a big client we shoot tethered. Love the hard drive idea. I even looked at making my own using an SSD and raspberry pi but this might be more reliable.

  • @thedrakes718
    @thedrakes718 Před 5 lety +1

This was the review video I was looking for, I've been debating if it was worth yo buy the EOS R as a second camera, I have a 5D Mark IV and I sold the Mark III I had as a backup camera because I felt it was already too outdated, so I saved some more money to jump to the 6D Mark II for backup but then I was like, I can put a couple more $$ and get the EOS R, and shoot with the Mark IV and the EOS R during a wedding.
I've never shot with a DSLR and Mirrorless at the same time and I don't know if it'll be too much a difference jumping from camera to camera, I really want your opinion on this since you use both Mark IV and EOS R, and you're a hybrid wedding photo and video shooter like me. Tell me what do you think? I'll buy the EF adapter since I already have a lot of L lenses.
I have the Crane 2 and I wanted a lighter setup because the Mark IV is very heavy, and especially when I'm doing destination weddings or just travel photography I was thinking that this mirrorless would be a great upgrade. I love Sony and I know all the good Sony A7rIII features, but I'm a Canon shooter and I want to stick with that, and even tho 1 is DSLR and the other is mirrorless, I think they can look very similar.
I'm in the middle of a crisis because I want to make a desition now, I have a big event to shoot this next week and I want to do the investment as soon as I can, so... Canon 6DmII or EOS R??
Thanks!! follow my work on Instagram @eugene_drake

I have decided to go ahead adn wait a while (what's another year?) until I hear more about Canon's "Pro Mirrorless" because I feel though it will be more expensive than the R, it'll have some of the stuff that I really wanted on the 5dIV.

Thank you very much...but you don't deal with the main subject: is this a camera you recomend for a wedding shooting ? I hesitate to take it as a main camera. Lot of people say "it doesn't suit to wedding...Not responsive enough..." you know all this sort of thing that make you imagine that it isn't the choice to make. Then have you handled it during a total shooting (i don't talk about video mode). I would very appreciate your feeling about this. ☺️

Great video! Thanks for sharing! I’ve been thinking to upgrade my photo camera to this model. Was also thinking of the Sony 7III or Fuji XT-3.
But discarded the Fuji since I don’t want micro 4/3.
And after using the Sony and working on its video files I am disliking the quality of it. IBIS is garbage on that thing. You are better off mounting it on a gimbal.
Although for this camera I am mainly looking to shoot photos, is nice to take video with these cameras once in a while. (Not professionally in my case since we use cinema cameras). And the bit rate is a huge deal for me.
But I was looking into how to transfer photos via Wi-Fi. Thanks for sharing the options you are using!
Unfortunately for the EOS R, it does have a hideous rolling shutter. But, I am used to dealing with that.
Was also wondering, can you transfer video via Wi-Fi as well?

"But discarded the Fuji since I don’t want micro 4/3." Uh, what? Fuji has an APS-C sensor that is 64% larger than micro 4/3. I used m4/3 from my first GF1 to the Olympus E-M5, but switched TO Fuji because I didn't want micro 4/3.

    First off amazing video...
You have the exact setup that I'm hoping to purchase next week; the EOS R with the 35mm MACRO STM!
I'd like to hear your opinion on something...
Everybody is goin on about how the 4k is cropped and how its unusable.
    I beg to differ. I think its awesome that the 4k is cropped and here's why;
Because 4K takes up so much space, causes lag on Premiere and doesn't make alot of difference quality wise since customers will be viewing the final project on their laptops; why don't we just embrace the cropped sensor because its able to give us two different focal lengths with a single lens.
You wanna shoot fairly wide go with the 1080p 35mm. You wanna get a tighter shot? Instead of switching lenses switch to 4k and bam! that 35mm just became a 63mm.
Although a 24-105 F4 is in my possession, because zoom lenses aren't very low-light friendly I do prefer primes mostly.
So what do you think? Instead of complaining about a cropped sensor 4k, should people should just look at it as 2 primes for the price of one?

Would love to see an update to this given the firmware updates, lenses which have been released and your flexibility to remap the rings and buttons if you went that route. Also! As a full wedding day photographer/videographer using this body do you rock a battery grip or just swap batteries? I'm finding I don't need the grip, but haven't done as much work as you :)

After some experimenting, I have configured it for three functions: tapping left sets the ISO to 'auto' (since the high-ISO quality of this machine is so incredible, my favourite combination has become Manual with auto-ISO), tapping right shows the histogram (since I only want it in sight occasionally) and swiping is zooming in digitally, so I can inspect if I need to adjust the results of the AF. There's another reason for this setting: the right side of the bar is so close to the place where my thumb rests, that I want to have a function on the right bar that doesn't influence the picture. Hence the histogram-setting there.

Hey. I am a photographer from Moscow and now I have canon 6d. I want to buy a new camera, but the choice is difficult.
I love canon but i don't like blackout canon r.
Please tell me how you make photos fast moment, because blackout complicates continuous focusing?

Enjoyed your review. I already have the EOS R, but like seeing how other photographers adapt. I have no big need for a second card most times, but find the JPGs so good, that the Wifi transfer of JPGs to phone is a good alternative for something more critical like a wedding.. I also don't max-out my cards either, and also use a 5DS in conjunction.

Mario Vaden I accidentally shot some jpegs on a personal trip. Was bummed then really took a look at them and man are they nice, so I definitely agree with you. I’ve seen that method from others, have yet to try it, and definitely will. Thanks for taking the time!

I have shot more than 400K on multiple 5DMKiii and only when doing the rare wedding videos did I use redundant dual slot writing. Have I had a card fail? Yes a while ago. Recently not at all. I still shoot with both CF and SD card slots filled but always in switch over when full. I am about to upgrade to the mirrorless world. Likely the R is okay for a starter camera, especially if the stills quality is as good as the MKiv. My goal is that it is me that makes better pictures, not feeling that any camera has prevented that from happening. I make strong pictures with the MKiii no reason to believe the R can't do the same.

I do landscape and astrophotography and have a 5DSr - it’s a wonderful camera as long as I stay on the tripod. I go myself a EOS R and I love it. The image quality is great, very low noise and I can use all my EF lenses. The autofocus is more than good enough for me even when taking pictures of my grandchildren. I got beautiful milky way shots too.
It’s a joy to use it. Try one, it will convince you.

I was planning to upgrade my 5d mkiii with the mk4, i convinced myself the eos r was not quite there yet, it looked like a toy and a step back and overall not professional etc etc...but when i picked one up at a trade show and then afterwards picked up the mk4, side by side the mk4 felt and looked dated in my opinion. The future is mirrorless! the eos r is a joy to use, and so nice that i can travel light with it especially with the 35mm. it’s great in the studio and superb for product or property etc the flip screen is fantastic. looking forward to shooting weddings with it this year. Don’t listen to the negative comments take the plunge you won’t regret it.

If you are in the Canon ecosystem I think the EOS R could be a good move for you! I have used everything from the Sony’s A7iii and A7riii, Fuji X-T3, 1dx2, and settled on 5d4’s and an EOS R. I’m in the midst of changing gear around, EOS R is for sure staying though. Out of them all the ones that I keep hovering around are the 5d4’s/EOS R and the Sony’s. In my experience those two have the most reliable autofocus and are great for dual photo & video! Sony though performs best with native glass just FYI!
      Hope that helps!

@@davidjorozco You summarized all my problems in one comment. I have Canon 6D I use it for events/portraits and even some videos. I was so wondering if I want to get a7iii or canon 5d mk4 / R or even 1dxmk2 cuz I want it for a long term! so I think I go with the canon eos R and let canon 6d as a backup camera. thanks buddy!
