- In this video I am taking a glance behind the scenes of the Celebration of Photography (CoP) 2022 where the new Leica M6 was released. I share my first impressions about the camera but also take you with me around the event. In cooperation with Silvergrain Classics a workshop in the imposing Leica Studio was hosted, where we set up a whole lab to be able to test out the new Leica M6 immediately and see your image as scans and prints straight away.

What an amazing event to be able to participate in. Impressive effort by you and your association as well as Leica.
I understand everyone’s disappointment when it comes to pricing, it’s probably a bit more than people hoped for, but Leica has never been an affordable camera for everyone and this probably will never change. This is Leica’a vision and it’s pretty much backed by sales and the quality & durability of the product. Considering this, I believe it’s a huge step in the right direction releasing an analog camera in 2022. Personality I’m hoping other brands will follow with their own new version (cc Canon, Nikon etc) as these brands have always targeted all category of people who shoot analog.
I could not have said it in any better way - this matches my thoughts 100%! We all hoped for a slighty lower price but realistically speaking this has never been an option. I also like to focus on the positive impact this release has for the film world even though this camera might not be in reach for everybody
an updated Canon AE-1 program or F-1 would be amazing to in 2023
@@nastynate838yes!! An F-1 that is a tiny bit lighter would be the dream omg. I think i hurt my neck and shoulder everytime i carry it with me haha
Fantastic Video, Karin! While a lot of people are frustrated by the pricing (it is a little unfortunate) I’m not really sure what should have been expected. Andreas has openly stated that if they wanted to make money, they wouldn’t have chosen to re-release this camera. Ultimately, shooting a Leica is a choice. Reading stories of many of the great photographers of the past, they have noted that they bought their first Leica used, or they were on a payment plan (Meyerowitz, for example) and it cost as much as a couple months income. That’s generally pretty true today. When I bought my MP, I sold _all_ of my other camera gear except a Fuji X-E4 and a single lens to fund the purchase, because the MP was so expensive. People are already dropping $5k here in Canada for an (old) M6. There’s not much difference in cost now between one of those and a brand new one, all things considered now.
Recently I have considered selling my 1996 M6, and a 1996 Summicron 50mm lens, both silver. But I’m not too sure now. Think I’ll keep them for another decade or two. Thanks Leica !
I got lucky. I purchased my Leica M6 in 2008 for only 1000 Euro in perfect condition. Back than not many people were interested in film photography any more. The Leica retailer had a second one. If i had known .....

You think I don’t care because I can afford it just like that? Lol, no. I don’t care because I am sick and tired that the price seems to be the only topic everybody seems to talk about online, complelty ignorant the beauty of this event and the statement of the release itself
Should have made an M4 as an cheaper alternative. I'm not sure reintroducing M6 for the same price as MP makes any sense. I love Leica and shooting my 1988 M6 (broken light meter) but I'm disappointed. A budget (under 3k€) option would be flying off the shelfs. This didn't change nor help film photography in any way.
I understand your frustration and think you have an interesting point. I think a lot of people were hoping for a more budget friendly option - but realistically speaking we all knew this would not happen. However, I disagree in the argument that this release won't help film photography, because I deeply think this will have an impact on other camera or film manufacturers.
I am also M6 shooter (camera from 1995), but I agree with this comment. This new M6 release for $5K will not help film photography similar as other available Leica Film cameras like the MP and MA didn't support this either. The majority of people going into film are going for much lower priced camera options (I bought my Leica M6 for $1200 and considered this already upper price range for me). But I admit that this release is a clever Leica marketing strategy pushing its luxury brand name.
@@KarinMajoka I Hope so too but I've been in manufacturing for 11 years and I have some insight. Problem is that it's all a numbers game. M6 won't have any impact because the target consumers are the same people who could afford MP/MA and a lot of them who are actively shooting are not collectors and won't get the M6 when already having the MP/MA. For other manufacturers to invest in new production lines the M6 would have to sell in hundreds of thousands in short amount of time (literally flying off the shelfs). Which we know, not gonna happen. We're in recession at the moment and new production lines are too big of a risk, not to mention if you follow the marked you'll notice that the camera companies are struggling as they are. Don't get me wrong I hope I'm wrong but realistically, just maybe, we'll get a point and shoot with autofocus and a half decent lens at best, something akin to Instax.
Thank you Karin for another excellent video. It is puzzling to me why Leica chose to stage an indoor studio shoot for the reissue of their iconic film camera that was used for anything but.
Make more 5000€ film cameras to make film more accessible :D.
Only people that shoot film (or people that have no idea and money) buy such cameras.

I was not there for the whole preparation before the event, but I know that setting up the studio and lab took several weeks of preparation. So glad that everything worked out so smoothly in the end. I am looking forward to trying out the Tetenal C41 tabs as well :)

Thank you for the video. I have shot for years, back to film and Leica is a whole new passionate experience. Like driving a the finest 4x4 vehicle to get to places digital cannot go. Really grateful for this release. Thank you Leica. I do have an older M6 which needed repair (parts) & CLA. With this new model I believe it means Leica M6 lives on. Grateful. Leica bring on youtube classes for developing film and processing images.

Yes, the Leitz park is wonderful! I did not have too much time to take photos myself during this trip, but I could spend days observing the light on the architecture there.

I prefer a kombination of 50mm Summarit on my MP and M4, even the Summicron 35mm. All in black, my MP ist black painted an without the red dot. A very small package. A analog Leica M will be ever a dream camera. Love or hate it, I think, we all should find it out.

It would be great if Leica could restart producing his Minilux compact camera. It's rather big demand for compact film cameras of a high levelel and huge prices for used ones. That could be really helpful for many film photographers.
had one for a few years (last decade). Lovely to look at, nice to use but the lens really wasn't the peak of sharpness, AF a bit flakey as well.

That Stockez guy is wrong though. The new M6 has impact changed. The electronics are new. The viewfinder is new. It is now brass instead of zinc. Saying nothing changed except the paint is not accurate. As a Leica ambassador he should know better. It’s a Leica MP dressed up like an M6 basically.
You have to take into account that not all information was available right from the start of this event. I talked to Jason and Gajan in this footage on the first day of the event - however, a majority of the information was released later.

people lust over it because it's a luxury item, a status symbol. Also because it's a well built machine that feels good in the hands. The craftsmanship is there. I think also because they've been maintaining them since the 1930's. You can buy a Leica and know that you'll have support for it longer than a Toyota.
Cool. But having a Leica M6 classic myself, I think I would get the MP instead. It 's the same camera but with a different skin. At my first glance, I thought that Summilux looked like the Zeiss Biogon especially with its vented hood. The black color would look more like a Voigtlander Nokton classic except maybe the its chrome nose. So, I 'll stick with the Cron. Would be interesting to see how the Voigtlander Nokton classic ver2 stacks up against this re-issued Summilux at 5x of the price.
Thanks for your comment! I would be interested in that comparison as well, since the Nokton is my current lens of choice. From the first sample images I saw, the overall look wide open is really similar indeed, even though I feel like the Lux had a bit more blooming in the highlights.
I disagree with you, price should be addressed. While I admire the effort of Leica to put out a new M6, their messaging about accessibility and more people getting into film, at this price point, is ludicrous and disconnected from the reality, i.e, from the economic turmoil that most people are experiencing right now.
I totally understand your point and of course a naive part of me also hoped for a more affordable price. But realistically speaking Leica was and still is a luxury brand and their interest in bringing out a film camera won‘t change anything about their overall business model. If you make a quick keyword search on CZcams about the new M6 you will see that pretty much all of the videos discuss the release from the price point only - and I am kind of tired of this but rather wanted to shift the focus of my video to the event itself. the price I addressed am sure you will find plenty.
I sold leicas when the m6 came out. Bought the first one that came in for 1350 canadian dollars. Just after m4 production was moved to Midland.. epic camera

Wonderful to have a new M6, but of course the price won't lower the threshold for starting film photography with new gear, particularly for young people. My entrance dream camera for the purpose of accessibility: A new Nikon FM3a with a decent 35mm lens for the price of a MacBook Air.
Of course, the M6 might not be a typical starter camera for film beginners. But we have to take into account that Leica has always been a luxury brand and that the price for the new M6 was expected. However, I hope that Leica as one of the most prestigious camera brands set a signal with this release that other camera manufacturers might follow the idea of re-releasing film camera - hopefully also more affordable ones.
What a pity, that we couldn't make it all to this impressing event.
I already have an M6, and for it I will buy the Elmarit-M 28mm / f2.8 ASPH. .. ... But the new Summilux-M 35mm f1.4 is for my M2. 👌

I totally see your point and I think a lot of people hoped for a "cheaper" price (the naive side of me as well). But realistically speaking Leica was and still is a luxury brand, so the price was somewhat predictable. Also, regarding the life span of such a camera I wouldn't even say it's that much.

@@carlosmcse Well, that settles that! Thank you for speaking out for every photographer currently shooting- and yet to be born. We will no longer have to worry about: paying rent, student loans, massive medical bills (and possibly those of their children or parents), those made homeless due to storms caused by man made climate change, or working multiple jobs just to make ends meet. Not to mention those photographers saving their pennies just to make a few prints. Carlos says: Go out and by that Leica- L-O-F-L!

I bought the less expensive lense (Leica 50mm f/2), then just bought a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.5 black mat with a mat black shade from Thorsten von Overgaard. If the M6-22 was bicolor, a silver lense would be acceptable.
I hope Pentax brings back the 67 with improved parts.

Deine Blitzlicht-Fotos mit dem Volvo P1800 sind echt gut geworden. Mein Favorit ist das Bild bei 3:57 👌🏻Style und Understatement pur
Aber auch bei den Bildern, die mit der X100V gemacht wurden, sind ein paar wunderbare Bilder dabei... Bei 2:32 zum Beispiel (sorry....ich mag neben der Fotografie auch Oldtimer... u.a. auch den P1800 😊 )

Thanks for the video. To my horror, I noticed that you have a red soft release! The M6 already has a red dot. My Leica is an MP, without any red dots. 😇

That looked like very luxurious event.
Camera wise, I'm a silver-top kind of guy. But I do get why they went all black as it's much more discrete for street photography. But looking at the price of the new one, I'm going to stick to my old 1C even if it doesn't have most of the features that the M6 has. Or maybe eventually upgrade to some other screw-mount model as they are currently more in my price range.
Thank you for your comment! Honestly, whatever works, works! I used a Fed-2 for some time which is basically a Soviet copy of the screw mount Leicas and really enjoyed it. :)
Hopefully the QC on these ones isn’t as bad as the rest
IT would be nice if other other film camera manufacturers if the past would release their analogue flagship cam overworked and implimentated metering technique of new digital cameras. I thing about focus points and lithium batterys. It would stay a dream.

Great video Karin! looks like an awesome event, would love to be part of something like this one day. This makes me love my original classic M6 even more, but at the same time I am very very very interested in the new Summilux steel rim haha. Did you take some real images with the Summilux at all?
Thanks for your comment Aston! :) I did not try out the new M6+summilux with film sadly. I would have had the chance but with the SGC workshop and everything I simply did not have the time. But I also hope for a couple of informative videos from other creators about this lens here on YT soon :)

Due to the complexity of the process I doubt that will ever happen. But just bringing back any film would be awesome

Amazing video, Karin! It really captures the whole event in a very nice way and it's great that Leica notices also the work that you are doing. And it looks like you had a great time there :)
While I like that they bring out the M6 again and I am hopeful this is a first step of making film and film camera's more accessible again, I have some doubts that the M6 re-release will do that. The price really makes it a luxury object for very few people. Having said this, it draws attention to film photography. So maybe other companies consider becoming more active to really make film more accessible again.

I guess what we can agree on is that the new M6 will most likely not be the first camera for beginning analog photographers. But nonetheless, I think the release of this camera will give film photography a push since Leica is one of the most prestigious camera manufacturers with a big influence in the camera world. The hope would be that this way other manufacturers might also reconsider their analog camera lineup, not even speaking of the impact on film manufacturers.

Fog is beautiful
It was foggy in Wetzlar almost every morning during the event, which was awesome :)
a $5k camera isn't going to make film more accessible. Its just going to keep film being a niche hobby for a few people.
No, a 5K camera won't make film more accessible for beginners. But it will make film more accessible for professionals who can declare a purchase as a business expense. Further, a release like that has an impact on other camera and film manufacturer who - hopefully - might also release or rerelease film camera which in the end might make it more accessible for beginners as well. Let's think long term here
