What did I find hard at Crib Goch?

  • My first time in Snowdonia National Park, attempting Crib Goch to finally summit Snowdon. Although i tried my best to take every safety precaution i still managed to find a way to bugger something up! Crib Goch is of course very dangerous so please only attempt it if you feel capable. Snowdown Summit.
    Thank you for joining me!

I just did this a couple days ago. No scrambling experience before this. I started down Pyg a 100 yards and turned around. I made up my mind and went for it. I was by myself and terrified the whole way. Things get real when turning around isn’t an option and I regretted my decision many times. I made it through and learned so much about myself. One of the greatest and most terrifying experiences of my life

I had exactly the same experience 30 years ago when I first did it. I did not expect it to be so scary. I learnt a lot that day.

I have walk up Snowden on 3 occasions now and used the miners / Pyg track. I do suffer with vertigo and would never go near Crib Goch. Someone once said to me “ you don’t have to have had a near death experience to have had an adventure “ Sound advice that was! Great footage and editing all the same.

I had i very unexpected encounter on Crib Goch back in the early 1960s. Set off from Pen y Pas early and was at the start of the knife edge before seeing anyone. Half way along i could hear someone approaching from the summit directions. For you youngsters - in those long distant days - you could hear people in their nailed boots for quite some distance ! The mist had taken away most of the view so i sat down and waited for someone to appear. Out of the mist came an older gentleman confidently striding along puffing on a pipe. As we exchanged pleasantries i was asstonished to see a Siamese cat appear and start rubbing himself on our legs. The older gent informed me that she always ventured into the mountains with him, was very happy on Crib Goch and had only once, when it was very icy, had to take refuge in his old Bergen. He informed me that puss had completed the Snownon Horseshoe many times and had even been to the top of Tryfan. We parted as he was walking back to Capel Curig where he was staying and wanted to have a bath before his dinner !😢

    Brilliant 👌
I've been to the summit many times because worked on the cafe renovation some years ago but I've never even seen crib goch route before, now I understand why so many lose their lives there every year.
You're a braver man than me, it was covered in snow until a warm spell a day or two before you went, but I guess you planned it that way.
    Fantastic footage. Thanks 👍

And I feel that I should also apologise to you, Jack. You see, I'm not the delightful Denise. I am, in fact, a 60-year-old bloke called Graham from Wakefield and I was employed by the Yorkshire Building Society to infiltrate your channel and get trade secrets from you and Em. All our excursions and illicit reminiscences together were designed to gain your confidence. But you won me over with your disarming charm (or your discharming arm, I forget which), so your secrets are safe with me.
However I will now have to lie low for a while to avoid the YBS hitmen. I'm told there's a discrete place in Honiston Pass I could hole up in for a while. If you fancy dropping by for a coffee any time... (bring your own coffee pot).
      Stay safe. And sane. ;)

My story with Crib Goch... In 2007 I came to UK and lived in a shared house. One of the tenants suggested to go to Snowdonia and he took me and other mate. I didn't know what Snowdonia was and I never did any climbing in my life so I took a rucksack with a beer inside it and put tshirt , shorts and adidas trainers on. Long story short, I found myself on the vertical wall climbing up with my mates above me and pieces of rocks flying down and nearly hitting my head. I knew there was no way back and I had to go up. I was shit scared like them and I was just praying not to die. My trainers were just unsticking. I think we climbed the worst possible way as we reached the top somehow from the side of the edge. I remember after that climb I wasn't scared of heights anymore, I could just walk at the edge of the roof of empire state building and wouldn't bother lol
That was the most stupid risky thing I did in my life

All the UK mainland ridge walks tend to look worse than they are until you're on them, and none are technically difficult, but the exposure can be scary to those who aren't used to it, or who don't like heights. I'm too old for it now, but before my health got the better of me, I found I had to go to increasingly remote places to escape the crowds. People have much more mobility these days, and that may tempt some to be too ambitious in their hillwalking adventures.

Excellent film Jack Crib I’d a beast especially the three pinnacles at the end of the ridge 🏔️
The footage was lush m8t (definitely worth sacrificing the drone for it if necessary 😱)
Assuming you could of retrieved it ?
The air BnB was lovely m8t 👍 did you get any sleep before the climb? I never do 🥹
    All the best Simon 🤠👍🏔️

I've lived near here for 30 years and never done Crib Goch. It's called the Red Ridge for a reason. It catches many people off guard every year.

Hey Jack, how's it going mate. I saw your insta content when you went up there but then forgot to watch the vlog. Tbf you tube didn't feed it to me sadly but aim all caught up now. Great drone footage and vlog dude! I've plans to film up there myself but likely after the summer hols if not before.
How far in advance did you book your air bnb. It's always put me off doing the Welsh peaks because I know parking is tough and booking something with unpredictable weather could end up in wasted money

    • @jackasnacks
      @jackasnacks  Před rokem +1

Hey Alex sorry haven’t checked my notifications all week. Well a bit of insider knowledge here, 30 minutes after I uploaded this video, CZcams went offline for a few hours which completely destroyed its chances at catching the algorithm. It effected a lot of videos at the time. The views it does have are just from people specifically checking my channel! I actually booked the air bnb the morning of the night I stayed. For doing a video I do recommend doing it on a week day and start at first light. The car park was empty around 630am so no stress but of course weather unpredictable. You really do need luck on your side. But I’m sure you will enjoy crib Goch it really is special

For me as a sport climber I found the climbing sections more exposed than the ridges did and was quite comfortable just walking along. Climbing up the slabs in places I was quite aware falling would be deadly. No way would I take someone else up who hasn't had a little bit of boulding or climbing experience before.
