- The classic Snowdon Horseshoe via Crib Goch. However Crib Goch has a surprise in store when it came to route finding and my friend Anne is full of fear! I've tried to give a good realistic perspective of what to expect from the Crib Goch. The route continues to Snowdon then I pick up the Watkins Path for the last summit of the day. 12km in distance and 1170m of ascent.

I very rarely add comments, however very much impressed by your video. It nice to have someone who explains the little difficulties, gets tired, worried, etc. instead of just a glowing report. Made me feel like I was there (done it a few times, but now a bit old and 5 hour drive to get there). My ethos is to always be honest, it doesn't always go to plan. From time to time you'll get lost or in this case get a bit confused with the route finding it. All to often social media paints it as conquers this and smashed that, it's not accurate.

Really good to see you tackling the full horseshoe, Robin. Has to be done, really. ;-) Glad to also hear your honest experiences of Crib Goch - those pinnacles are not to be underestimated. When I did it, I think I felt pressured by a group of very confident people who'd caught up behind us.

It's a tad spicy in places.
About 20 years ago I did ML course when I was in the Army ,we did Crib Gogh in a full white out .
I was a lot younger then ..
Last year ,I went up Scarfell .On the way back instead of using my map and compass ,I sacked it and just walked off into a Valley towards where I thought my car was parked .
I ended up going through two rock flows and cut my legs and feet to bits .If I had slipped and broken or twisted my ankle or knees I would.have been up shxt creek .
I got complacent and it nearly cost me ..a lot as it was also getting dark.
I didnt (plan) any of it etc .
Lesson learned the hard way.
It just goes to show you, how quickly it can go wrong if you make one mistake. Can see why a lot of people who don't bother with learning to use a map and compass get into bother quickly.
You and Anne are absolute heroes. 👏👏 very well done and what an amazing video. 👍

am getting the fear just from watching! never had a fear of heights though, i just enjoy the ride. seen this Horseshoe when i was Fell Walking around Snowdonia. wish i had of tried it now.
I’m good with heights too, bit of a nervy scrambler with down climbs but on the whole Crib Goch and the Aonach Eagach are a just about my comfort zone, the latter just outside.
See that Helicopter at 12:20..That would be rescuing me, frozen stiff by fear.

Anne was a savage!! Well done guys. Never ever doing it myself though 😂 I've watched numerous videos of people climbing Crib Goch and I've realised I'm more of a walk around the lake followed by a nice cup of tea and a biscuit kinda guy ☕️☺️

Great vid - I did CG a few years ago and didn’t really enjoy it until I was over it - the ‘bad step’ on the way up is a mental challenge because it feels very much like you’ve committed to the ridge then and you won’t be going back down the same route - also I recommend doing it for the first time in fine weather - obviously route finding on a ridge should be straightforward but it does make it easier if you know the weather is going to hold out
Cheers mate, I know what you mean about the initial pull up, you are kinda commited to do the ridge after that as it wouldn't be a pleasant down climb. What frustrated me as we'd done it before but forgot the route off the last pinnacle then a bit of panic set in. The narrow arete isn't difficult at all as long as you have a head for heights.
Note to self! I’m not doing Crib Goch. Heart in my mouth on that one mate. Fairplay to you for keeping going Robin. Even the wife told me ‘your not taking me the **** up there’ 😂🤷🏻♂️

Found it easy peasy passed loads of people on our way upp to the top done the route twice in a week done
The whole ridge no problem with my son when you have done the forcan ridge😊 Wales is nothing
We found it easy peasy back in 2016, think the route finding at the last pinnacle threw me off particularly when Anne was struggling. These things happen.
Done Snowdon via Crib Goch years ago. Remember it was a bit of a brown trouser job. Weather was bad so no visibility, maybe wasn’t a bad thing! Great stuff as usual. Regards Brian🤠
I wouldn't fancy it in the clag but I've heard a lot of people say they prefer it so they don't see the exposure.
I wish GoPro would release a lens which gives a realistic perspective rather than the curved aspect. It is terrifying and I want to see if.

yeah that pinacle bit the left looked inviting and the right has a gnarly step up but much easier, I need to get back up there soon, great horseshoe route, nice video :)
Cheers M&M. I'm pretty sure we took that route first time around and whilst it looks daunting, it's not that bad in the end. The whole route is brilliant though. Possibly in my top 10 circuits.

Cheers Dave, it is good fun isn't, involved without being too involved. I made sure not to give that fish eye effect that gives the perception the ridge is much more narrow than it actually is.

Loved your Vlog, I love Crib. On the third pineapple you scramble up the right hand side, big drop bellow but good steps and hand holds. Watch the polished rock with trainers on.

Great video Robin. Respect for being so honest about the experience. It’s often more difficult when you’re with someone else as you feel so responsible for them. The horseshoe was my first ever walk in Wales in November 2016. Did it solo took me 6hrs and couldn’t see a thing. Nice one bud. ATB Dave
Thanks Dave, definitely important to give an honest account of these routes to give people researching a balanced idea. 6hrs you must have flew around it. Saying that when there's nothing to see there's no point hanging around.
Always wanted to do Crib Goch, specially on a day like that, unreal views! Hats off to both of you for getting over without anything major and local knowledge is always a bonus. I hope that helicopter was just practicing and what a horseshoe that was, the weather and the views were just getting better and better, cheers Alan
Cheers Al, have you got a good head for height? I think the helicopter was training as it hovered around the summit of Snowdon before flying off.
@@WalkWithWallace - Yes, been over Sharp Edge 4 times, always nervous but happy with that as nervous keeps your focused :o)

Hi Robin, Good 2c even the best can come unstuck, when I did Crib Goch I was young and fit, on the right of the ridge was thick mist so could only see the drops on the left a strange situation, it was a fine scramble but wouldn't fancy doing it now with limited mobility, I also really enjoyed doing Tryfan on my trip! I can fully understand Anne's issues it is a lot tougher as you get a little older and less agile, I get temporarily stuck on the gully on Arthur's Seat as couldn't get a hand hold and a weak left leg! Hey Mark, it's quite cool when the mist clings to one side of the ridge like that. Tryfan is another one I haven't managed to get a good day on, I'd like to try the North ridge next time. Is that the gully you take from near the crags?
Brilliant footage as usual I really enjoyed it. I live in South Wales and travel to the Highlands a lot just come back from a great trip to Ben Aden fantastic weather I put a bit on my channel but having done snowdonia to death in the eighties and nineties I have neglected the area since as I love the highlands so your clip as inspired me to go back to snowdonia soon so cheers look forward to watching your next trip cheers

We approached from loch Quoich We had good dry weather so the ground was good and rivers low the second river could be difficult in spate camped past the dam and next day climbed Ben Aden up rocky ridge then around some amazing ground up to Sgurr na Ciche then onto Garbh Chioch Mhor then descended to bealach then descended west down Coire Nan Gall where our tent was next day we walked out so we took three days bearing in mind I am approaching 60 and my bro is 70 you could do it in less days we’ll take care keep the trips coming on your channel they honestly kept me going during lockdown playing your backcatolog of tripscheers

Great film Robin looks mental that ridge walk i have watched many YT films of it over the years and it is a rival of the AE ridge i would say. I was at the summit of Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa years ago and i hadn't really heard of the Crib Goch route at the time and i got talking to a party who had walked it with a guide and i could see the fear and relief in all of their eyes and no wonder!

The Aonach Eagach is definitely the next level up. Crib Goch probably sits between the CMD Arete and the Aonach Eagach. Some people skip along these ridges, no fear and others are terrified then folk in the middle like me. 😂 . 👀

Brilliant video Robin. Looked good. Wouldn't fancy that in the wet like. I find the older I get, the more I've lost my bottle. When you are young and single you tend not to care as much. I think you handled it just fine pal.

Well done Robin. Crib Goch is certainly not for the faint hearted. Really enjoyed seeing the footage from your eyes as it provided a real sense of what a challenge it is. I can imagine in bad weather, it could be quite extreme. I’m still on the fence as to whether to give it a go. I enjoy a nice scramble, but less so when there is a much higher risk of injury or worse!
Cheers Anthony, I suppose the one good thing is the scrambling isn't difficult at all, it's just the exposure and the thought of one slip. No danger you'd get me up there in wet conditions. 👀

Anne reminds me of my attempt of Crib Goch. Anxious, out of my comfort zone and on all fours much of the route. Comes down to lack of experience of exposure.
Everybody is different with their tolerance to exposure. Anne has got bags of experience but doesn't enjoy the exposure. 😁
We did the crib last summer and loved it , brilliant enjoyed watching your take on it 👍🏼

Got to try that one, went up Snowden a week ago and loved it, great workout for the legs too. Got separated and lost on the way down though. I was surprised how busy it was, and didn't know you can get a train up there ! There was a cafe too but it was shut.
Save it for a good day mate, it's a cracking route if you've got a head for heights. Don't make our mistake on the 3rd pinnacle though. 😂

Traversing the third pinnacle on the right of it is the easiest and quickest, although it is a more exposed for a few steps.
Correct mate, two others went that way and it looked fine, but at the time I didn't feel confident getting Anne over the 3rd pinnacle as she wasn't in a good place.

Heights shown in metres - wish it has been in feet. I can relate to that.
I did the Horseshoe with my dad in 1981. (The w/e of the 'Royal Wedding' which we were escaping.) Now after the arrete shown in this film I know I had to walk along a ledge at one point. When I looked down from this ledge I couldn't see the ground - there was a heavy mist or low clouds. In this mist/clouds I could see circular rainbows. It was both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. It was a long way down, even to the clouds. I asked my dad about the ledge walkway afterwards and he casually told me people had been blown off it in the past! We got to Snowdon where people were near ambling up. I was relieved and my fear of heights somewhat lessened (at least for a time). My dad's no longer with us - but the memory of that climb (especially the arrete and the ledge) is still very much with me.
Can anyone help me with my memory here please? I don't want to have to do that again!
I probably should use metric and imperial, opt for metric to match our maps. 🗺
I wouldn't fancy the conditions you experienced 40 years ago, that doings grim. I suppose the mist swirling around would hide some of the exposure.
@@WalkWithWallace - In fact I was looking down at least a hundred foot to the clouds! Otherwise the day was beautiful. It was very odd and has stayed with me!

Funnily enough I got the train up too, but I was only a nipper and my Mum wouldn't let me and my Dad climb it. 😂

No too bad now Robin, I have been off work since end of August last year as I have had long Covid and other complications so I haven’t really been travelling or doing much. I deactivated Facebook ages ago will get back to it eventually once I get back to work and back on my travels. I have loads of photos & videos from previous trips I have been sorting out. Hope to be getting back work soon & back to normal. Hope you are keeping well and enjoying your walks.

I'm from Snowdonia but have lived in Leith for over 20 years now.
If you're ever down in Wales again you should give Cadair Idris a shot. It's nothing too challenging but, it's a great day out and the views are hard to beat.
Maybe plan a camp up there... Look up what legend says happens if you do.

@@WalkWithWallace Good choice... My earliest camping memory is from up there! To be honest it was tough as an 8 year old... I think my Dad expected 30 odd miles over two days to be an easy trip.

I don't mind the scrambling it's the exposure that scares me. I have done the Aonach Eagach which I believe is technically harder but the exposure is worse on Crib Groch. I think I would find the Crib Groch harder, I will do it at somepoint though. Great video, well done mate.

@@WalkWithWallace it's probably different when you do it. It might be the action cameras lense they always make things look wore. Cheers for the advice.
@@GusExplores yeah the wide angle shots on action cameras can distort it and make ridges look much narrower, just look at the horizon and you can see straight if it's curved at the sides. I don't use that in this vid.
@@WalkWithWallace when I am filming I try and stay away from the wide angles and super wides to get a more natural look. Your horizon looks normal but the ridge still looks sharp 🤣🤣🤣

Snowdonia is so rugged, give me Scotland any day, walker rather than climber 😅👍
That was handy, there was a couple there too. They picked the right line and we could have followed them but by then my confidence took a knock and I decided to try that gully my friend suggested.
Took me and a mate four hours from the summit of Snowdon to Pen y Pas car park via Crib Goch in snow. Very hairy at times. Chip butty at Petes Eats most welcome after that.
I wouldn't fancy that route in the snow. 4 hours is a decent time. 😁
Classic route, best UK mountain day outside of Scotland. That third pinnacle is actually an easy short scramble but you need to know what you're looking for and it's hard to find info on it.
I'd agree with that actually, it's definitely a classic and Lliwedd is a nice one to finish on top. The couple that appeared at the same time, went the correct line and it didn't look too bad, I think my confidence took a wee knock and I knew Anne was concerned.

It's good to know when you're out of your comfort zone, and scrambling must be very difficult for people with knee problems. I'm a bit of a scrambling fanatic so I loved the scrambling before and after Crib Goch, but paradoxically I get vertigo with trembly legs when there's a lot of exposure, so I really didn't enjoy the knife-edge ridge that is Crib Goch. I kept having to pause for a few seconds to allow my racing heart beat to return to normal - not easy, as there were lots of people on the ridge that day!
Grib Goch is good fun and probably about my level these days. 😁 That's interesting, we're kind of opposites then as I've got a good head for exposure, but a bit apprehensive scrambling. Nothing worse than the disco leg though, I got that on Skye once. 😬

Was that helicopter for the guy who fell from Crib Goch back in 2021? Another hiker fell to their death the previous month. Not for the faint of heart.
I think on this occasion, it was just a training exercise. It was hovering over Snowdon for a while too, before flying off.

Cheers Euan. I'm loving the NXIS boots so far. Comfortable and I enjoy the flexibility of the mid boot. They've had some tough mountain terrain recently in Wales and Skye and they're only just beginning to show some very minor wear and tear.

Cheers Allan, I would say the Forcan Ridge is on a par with GC but AE and Liathach are definitely a step up in difficulty. 🧗♂️

Did this one 34 years ago when I was only 50. R had an older ex colleague in Bangor Uni who wanted to come. His wife kept saying "darling, the doctor said...." "Pooh to the doctor." He was kitted out in a linen jacket and trainers, but made it all the way round the horseshoe, refusing to go down with his wife via the train. Took us nine hours shepherding him round.. That evening we discovered that the doctor had told him he needed a triple heart bypass.We were FURIOUS. Imagine if anything had happened up there. Was it less than a year after this that Anne had a replacement knee?
Oooft, that is a bit naughty but he survived to tell the tale. Think this was just over a year before her knee op, Anne did well considering.
You have to be so careful on the moutains if you don't know where you are, especially when there's mist. You climb down and can't get up and on the wrong side and a sheer drop your f**ked. Be safe. 🙏

Spectacular scenes there pal. CG looked awesome there. It was wreathed in mist when I did it and I didn't enjoy it a great deal. Quick question Robin, where would it fit in terms of challenge, exposure, difficulty, fun, etc, with the following, An Teallach, Am Fasarinen, Aonach Eagach, Black Cuillin, etc?.

An Teallach, Liathach and the Aonach Eagach are all a step up in difficulty from Crib Goch (grade 2 scramble). The first two offer a bypass path to avoid most of the difficulties though. Aonach Eagach like Crib Goch, you're pretty much committed to finish the ridge.

I’m 19 and on for my second scramble I did tryfan. I know that’s not impressive but I personally found it terrifying at points. I’d say I have average/above average fitness but I don’t really have much confidence and I’m not so great with heights. I’m terrified of falling off and I was wondering if anyone has advice for overcoming fears of this type of walk?
Just spend more time on the mountains, but don't throw yourself in at the deep end doing something like Tryfan or Crib Goch, if you're based near Snowdonia, then Moel-Siabod has some easy scrambling. Look at mountains that have some exposure but not any difficult scrambles.
Might be worthwhile booking a guide to help.
