    Hi I don't know if you're still responding to comments but how important would you say extracurriculars are to the application process? Like if a person had a good GPA/SAT but had very few things outside of school, would that put them out of the running or no?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 2 lety +4

      While extracurricular activities (and more so the interview) are somewhat important, they are going to primarily be looking at GPA/ACT/SAT. A person is most certainly not out of the running just because they don't have impressive extracurriculars. Hope this helps!

    For the DODMERB exam, is an appointment assigned to you or are you supposed to make one after a certain date?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 3 lety +3

      As with most of these things, the best thing you can do is constantly check your online portal (the DODMERB/DODMETS one). Typically, the portal will pop up with the nearest medical facility that will give you the DODMERB exam on the DOD's dime. However, from my best recollection, you will still be required to set up an appointment with the facility that DODMERB assigns to you. TL;DR...check your portal.
      If, however, you haven't arrived at the point in which AFROTC indicates that you need to take the DODMERB, you should simply wait and keep checking your emails/AFROTC portal. Worst case scenario, you can certainly contact your application technician to ask any questions you may have. Normally, the medical exam is down the road a bit.
      I hope this helps!

    As I heard, to apply the scholarship , need SAT 1250, not due to pandemic, couldn't take SAT now. even this time they still require SAT score to apply schoarship?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 3 lety

      That is correct, you need a minimum of either a 1240 on the SAT or a 26 on the ACT. Additionally, you need a GPA of at least 3.0. As far as not being able to take the tests due to the pandemic, I would reach out to a local detachment to see what advice they offer. You can find a local detachment by using the following tool: www.afrotc.com/college-locator/?gclid=CjwKCAjw4_H6BRALEiwAvgfzq1Kt7eXj1NZUBSw_wJaPXn7Yf3lGzN4ydITp3lv8mpB3lTqSZ-sKthoCTMAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds (if that URL doesn't work, you can simply google "afrotc college locator").

    Do you apply for your college and get accepted BEFORE applying for an ROTC scholarship or after? And what if you get accepted for an ROTC scholarship to a specific school but that school doesn't accept you, can you use that scholarship for another school or do you have to restart the process?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 3 lety +2

      Great question! You typically apply for the AFROTC scholarship at the same time you apply for colleges. The scholarship is not school specific, meaning in your application you will list the schools you are applying for. Then, if you are awarded the scholarship, you are able to apply it to whichever school you end up attending. Some schools may not be the best option depending on the type of scholarship you are awarded (choosing an expensive out-of-state school for a type seven scholarship may not be the best decision), but you still have freedom and flexibility.

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 2 lety

      There's really no way to be certain. I would guess that it would slightly give you the edge over someone with the same ACT/SAT/GPA scores without any extracurricular activities. Yes, it probably does help, but at the end of the day they're looking for good academic scores. Hope this helps!

    What are some good things to get involved in during high school to build a strong application?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 4 lety +2

      Great question. Personally, I participated in the Civil Air Patrol which helped me out tremendously. Other great outlets are JROTC, Boy Scouts, and leadership positions within your school. You can be creative as you'd like, doing anything from volunteer service to joining a team sport to playing in your school's band. The biggest thing is finding organizations you can connect with, are passionate about, and will succeed in.

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 4 lety +2

      @@brennenrichards2585 , leadership positions will certainly be looked upon more favorably. Simple participation is good, but not as good as being a leader in some capacity.

      Birdboy I gotcha. So I’m going to be a junior in HS this year. I have an unweighted gpa of 3.9, multiple honors and APs, I haven’t taken the Sat or Act yet but I should do well. I play baseball, go to church, play guitar for my church youth group, have about 75 volunteer hours, am in National honors society and 3 other clubs. I plan to look for leadership positions in clubs this year and my senior year. What are my chances of getting a scholarship?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 4 lety +2

      @@brennenrichards2585 , obviously, there are no guarantees. The following link provides some helpful stats: www.serviceacademyforums.com/index.php?threads/afrotc-2019-2020-scholarship-statistics.72772/
      The extracurricular, etc. are great to have. However, especially for the AFROTC scholarship, they are primarily looking at ACT/SAT scores and GPA. I would highly encourage you to take the ACT and SAT as soon as possible. After you figure out which one you do better in, go back and take it a couple more times to get a really solid score. Just looking at your profile, you are certainly on the right path.
      Hope this helps!

    • @thebirdboy

      From their website: "Scholarship Requirements: SAT composite of 1240 or ACT composite of 26.
      Cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher." However, you should certainly shoot to have scores above the minimum.

      @thebirdboy  Před rokem

      Unfortunately, you will need a minimum of either a 1240 on the SAT or a 26 on the ACT. I would highly recommend retaking the SAT or taking the ACT and then applying for the scholarship if you are interested.

    when can you expect to hear back whether or not you got a scholarship?

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 3 lety

      This is from their website: "If you have not heard anything within six weeks, contact AFROTC at 866-423-7682 or email your scholarship technician." From my recollection, I didn't have to wait terribly long. Certainly, it's a good idea to "forget about it" and not worry too much. That being noted, you should certainly reach out if six weeks have passed and you haven't been updated. Best of luck to you!

    If I graduated last year and took a break from school, can I still get the scholarship. Since I’m not in HS or college or is it too late. Also can I still get the scholarship if I never did JROTC

    • @thebirdboy
      @thebirdboy  Před 2 lety

      No need to do JROTC... college ROTC is completely different. As long as your GPA and test scores are good enough, you don't have to be immediately out of high-school to get a scholarship. Hope this helps!

      While the specific process may change from year to year (the application portal will specify exactly what they are looking for), they will most likely want a school official to proctor the event, sign the form, and ensure the results on the form are accurate.

      @thebirdboy  Před 3 lety

      I appreciate it. It's most certainly not too late to apply for this cycle; I would just ensure you get on top of everything as soon as possible. As I mention in the video, the earlier your application is in, the more likely you will be able to get a scholarship. That being noted, if your application is poor, not even getting it in early will save it. Alternatively, if your application is strong enough, you should still be able to get a scholarship even if you apply somewhat late. I hope this helps!

While it varies from Detachment to Detachment, AFROTC is an incredible program that allows you to travel the path to become an Air Force Officer while also having a "normal" life. You may have to pay a small amount to take the ROTC "classes," but for the most part there isn't a cost associated. No scholarship simply means you won't receive help paying tuition.
