The fact that Joy was willing to leave Sadness to die in the movie's climax made my blood boil even after she learned from her mistakes and finally accepted Sadness as someone who is actually needed in Riley's life.
Well if you think about it from the hindsight, joy in it's rawest form is a very selfish emotion. Think of all the bad to selfish to narcissistic to attention seeking things that people do, it's all a by-product of seeking joy. In the attempt to be happy many will often to most times push aside other people's happiness in their short-sighted fits. Which on my opinion is the reason why the core or leader emotion in the adults of that movie were all anything but joy. As kids the core emotion may have been joy but after we reach a certain stage of maturity that leadership position is passed on to another emotion depending or based on the specific experience that the person has gone through in life. For some people, as they mature their leader emotion becomes disgust, others it's anger, others it's fear but whenever that leader emotion is joy it's obvious through the immature and selfish behavior they display.
it kinda makes sense that Joy is narcissistic. Selfish emotions are ultimately a byproduct to want to feel joy- we want all the attention, all the love, and don't want to let others have it because _we_ want to be happy, others be damned. Selfless joy does exist, but at its core the reason why we feel happy when our loved ones are, is because the thought of them being anything _other_ than happy makes _us_ sad. Joy in its unadulterated form without any complexity is just a mania. Like living life from one high to the next, absolutely disregarding anything else that could make us come down from that high of pleasure and make us unhappy or uncomfortable. Joy being a short-sighted bitch to sadness really highlights this.
That's how I think of it too (plus it makes sense for the emotions to act as they do because they're a single emotion). Though I do like the HISHE animation for addressing how these singular emotions in Riley's head are able to have complex emotions themselves lol. XD
It's natural biological strategy, If you see your partner slipping consistently, especially if it starts dragging you down, it is obvious to find new more stable pillar ;) for better life for you and your fam. Totally understandable, nothing personal, only brutality of nature. Gotta survive and live well, it ain't a charity. In fact dudes themselves leave terminally ill woman partners six times as likely than the opposite, so they got no right to be sourpuss about this.
I think it's funny how Joy hates Sadness because according to her, Sadness makes Riley unhappy, but she somehow has no problem with anger, disgust, or fear. Which you could argue do also make Riley unhappy. I mean disgust at the wrong time and place could cause you to be lectured or hurt someone else's feelings, resulting in them lashing out and you and you being hurt, and anger and fear are pretty self-explanitory.
i think its more that disgust, fear and anger are easier to explain emotions. you need to feel disgust so you don't eat something rotten or do something that is embarassing socially, having disgust and dignity is important for that, you need fear to know what is dangerous and how to be safe not only from outside dangers but also having caution around high cliffs or dangerous situations. you need anger to express discontent and have motivation to stand up for yourself and fight for survival or for your tribe. but sadness? its a very complicated emotion, and its very tough to even describe let alone understand, and you feel terrible while sad, but its extremely necessary to feel it
It's because the other emotions don't really do anything except sadness, sadness was trying to change Riley's core (as she should) which makes joy think sadness is wrong
The other 3 emotions can be bad, but they're essential at times, as joy mentions at the start. Anger makes sure things are fair, he gives Riley the ability to stand up for herself. Disgust makes sure Riley doesn't eat gross stuff or act embarrassingly. Fear keeps Riley out of dangerous situations. What joy is blind to at the start is that sadness allows Riley to communicate that she needs support from those around her. And we do see sadness causing "harm" when she cries in class because her classmates may look down on her for being sad about moving. They are children, after all, and all the emotions agree that crying at school was helping, so it's not just joy who was mad at sadness there.
The weird part of this movie is the fact that if you look at the parents’ emotions they all match the gender and appearance of the person that they control, but Riley has both male and female presenting emotions and they don’t really match her appearance
id like to think its bc she is still a child so her emotions are still mixed. we all saw the puberty button, perhaps it will do more than.. yk giving her puberty, maybe even changing her emotions to all the same look and gender. idk, no one knows tbh
@@isaiaholaru5013unfortunately, the truth is probably much simpler: They wanted to explore other people's emotions later, but they didn't want it to confuse audiences, so they added hair and clothes onto the existing models instead of making new ones.
I think Joy is being manipulative to Sadness like the way that we lie to ourselves. For example, when we're down we distract ourselves or lie to ourselves saying were ok to get through negative situations. Her whole life in Minnesota was revolved around things she new, things she has happy core memories about. But the sudden move to Sanfransisco put her is an unfamiliar envirenment, with nothing but her parents and hockey that could activate her core memories. This unfamiliarness makes her "emotions" unstable, Joy is no longer able to be the center Riley's life like she did in Minnesota. This makes her more manipulative because everything that happens onward is unpredictable. Knowing from past experiences during childhood, she sees Sadness as a useless emotion. Since, like I said above, her core memories from Minnesota are all happy so being or expressing sadness was pretty much useless. At the end of the movie it reviels that Sadness is probably the most usefull emotion in hard situations like a sudden move. Trying to always be happy with distractions and lies is much more suffering than exploring your sorrows.
I think the reason of why sadness wasn't the first emotion to appear, it's because the first cry of a baby doesn't come from sadness, it's just purely a cry to help them breath better. But they do feel joy if you make them smile/laugh.
Even as a kid I thought Joy was one of the most punchable characters out there. I was ready to get violent when after EVERYTHING she left Sadness to rot. I could write an essay on how it's a good thing they made her a manipulative arsehole and how it's all a metaphor for faking and bottling your emotions, but I'm petty.
FINALLY, someone who doesn’t hate Sadness in this movie. So many people just act like whiny, psychopathic children when they hate on her, and it’s honestly frightening. That’s only because they don’t UNDERSTAND her, though. I can see their points, but I just disagree. The reason why Sadness was being so handsy with the memories was because she was being suppressed, and basically told that she was useless and only a burden on everyone else; like Mirabel from Encanto, for instance. She was told that the best way for her to help, was basically just to stay out of the way. It’s reverse psychology: The more you’re told not to do something, the more you want to do it. But I also love your point, though, about Sadness just doing her job. She feels that it’s her calling, and deep down she KNOWS that it is, to touch the memories in order for Riley to feel these natural emotions that are OK to feel. But she also doesn’t want to be a burden, or to mess everything up, so she assumes that it’s just because something is wrong with her, due to Joy’s unintentional manipulation. I felt so much for her in this movie 😢 That was why it seemed as though she was just mindless and aimless, or stupid; but in reality, she was SUPPOSED to do that. But she finally realized her calling when Joy was actually being supportive to her for once, and letting her do what she was always meant to. I understand the themes and messaging of this film SO much more now that I’m older, and it’s absolutely beautiful. If you don’t express your emotions in the right places, then they’ll just bottle up, and fester; until they eventually get too crammed up in there and explode, causing mayhem without people understanding what’s really bothering you. And you might not WANT to feel those other, “negative” emotions, but you HAVE to. Cinema Therapy put this brilliantly: “You can’t feel true joy without feeling sadness first.” Something along those lines. I don’t hate Joy in any way, actually; she is a flawed protagonist, but I think that she had a fantastic character arc. I just can’t stand the TikTok Disney fan brats who act like they’re SO special for just bashing on Sadness without even trying to UNDERSTAND her. I’m not saying that everyone who disagrees with me “missed the point” or something; they’re entitled to their opinions, but they can at least TRY to understand. Also, THANK YOU for bringing up this point: The Islands getting shut down, and the core memories getting sucked out wasn’t Sadness’ fault at all! She was merely doing her job; but Joy didn’t see it that way, or realize that these changes NEEDED to happen, so she just kept pushing and pushing her away, which then caused them both to get sucked into the pipe. But the fact that Joy just decided to blame Sadness for the whole thing when talking to Bing Bong just really irked me, not going to lie. This could be seen as a good metaphor for depression, though; I don’t have any personal experiences with it, but people with depression usually are stuck in one spot, and just want to go back to that time in their life, usually in their childhood, where they were the happiest. But they know that they can never go back to the past, so instead of moving forward and accepting changes, they just lose all ability to feel, as well as motivation; as Riley almost does in the movie. Joy just wants everything to stay the same, even as so many changes are happening around Riley that she can’t stop; which causes her to slip further and further into depression. It’s only after Riley actually expresses to her parents what she’s feeling, that she can finally move forward and lift that weight off of her shoulders, and move forward into a changed, but better life where she can create new, great memories. ❤ Depression is not merely sadness, but emptiness and the absence of motivation, or any feeling at all. The point when Riley was ALLOWED to be sad was when she was finally lifted OUT of her depression, and got the help that she needed. God, I love this movie.
Okayyy, i agree but i see more people preferring Sadness over Joy in so many ways. So nah, you're not alone. Joy kinda sucks befor her character development.
Thank you for explaining this. Don’t get me wrong, being happy and joyful is one of the most important things for a person. You made a very good point about Joy bringing others pain while only trying to make Riley happy. Tbh, for a person whose job is to make someone joyful, they have to learn that there are times that are normal to be sad, mad, or disgusted.
@@Autumn-xs1bt Yeah, can't have joy without sorrow. Like the film and the narrator explains, you need sorrow to express your pain so that others can understand you and comfort you. Smiling all the time such as at funerals or trauma isn't normal and usually would be called 'masking'

“And this is the story of how riley got 10 more siblings. The end.” 💀
6:28 instant karma
Youre right bud
3:27 confirms Joy is racist
OMG
LOL
this is actually true if you think about it-
No, she's dumb and manipulative, and I think everything she did is correct. She thinks Riley needs happiness only, not other emotions.
That’s not it but it is it
1:22 she’s drinking the grimace shake💀
No
that's not the grimace shake that's blue and grimace is purple
Guys it’s just a joke calm down

“This is the story how Riley got 10 more siblings” 💀💀💀
Most I remember about this is when Disney thought Joy would be the best selling character and made more of her products than the other characters. To no surprise, Sadness merch sold more by a large profit margin which is still a win for them😅
"disney are you dumb or is this a special baby" 😭😭😭😭😭
You mean "bhaybhay"
*"excuse me, maddam but may i drink from your t******"*
had me rolling on the floor
My little sister thought it was Inside Out but she still understood what you said and actually laughed which surprised me.W video btw ❤😁

“ NO BECAUSE ITS A BAWBEE” Got me rolling on the ground 🤣😩💀
Damn this really validates my depressed ass and proves that Sadness is just OP, Joy has no place being in my life. Leave me and my son Melancholy alone.
Edit: yes this is a joke but I am also INFP so
Maybe you didn't hear him mention that all emotions are important. Anyway, I hope you find a healthy balanced psyche. Cheers
how does a comedic video which is supposed to be all jokes and not to be taken seriously proves anything realistic?....this just sounds like your looking for excuses to why you shouldnt be happy when you should be looking for the opposite. i pray you become healthy again and that your depression is boycotted into the shadow realms
@@animesimp1028 gen z habits to always find a way to be sad and ungrateful
It's better if you give a lecture to a wall rather then the person who is a part of gen z....
^ also why are you blaming Gen Z, not every generation acts the same you want me to say all Millenials are bad because of some bad people?
@@bibi4847 Putting an entire generation into one bag! How inspiring!

2:12 I think yes joy is the wrong in the wrong for being mean to sadness heres a good quote that makes this 1 time ok
Dont be sad its over be happy it happened.
That's the point of the movie
Every time EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS MOVIE I CRY
I even cried during this recap like omg even if it's suposed to be comedy that one scene always makes me cry
I feel her, when I just moved in my house, OUR HOUSE SMELLED LIKE CAT PEE
This actually explains emotions that I feel every day pretending to be happy but on the inside I’m actually sad I just don’t wanna show it this actually taught me a Lesson to teach me how to show emotions thanks so much for making this video this actually taught me how to show emotions and not for me to pretend that I’m happy😁
4:30 this scene would have been very different if this was a black family
And if it was made in 2023
NAAAAAAHH 💀💀💀

Sometimes people have days were we just need to cry a bit to let it out. sometimes when I feel like that I actually watch inside out because it always makes me tear up by the end.
I understand what it's like to spend your whole childhood with pure joy and bliss and then get to your teen years and just feel sad and closed off and feeling lonely like you can't talk to anybody.
and when I feel sadness all I wanna do is feel happy again I always hated my other emotions I just wanna feel good again. But we always seem to forget that every emotion is a good emotion you just have to learn how to channel it right.
Lol 4:09
