But a better life for themselves is also a better life for their children, isn't it? Why is it okay to suddenly assume most immigrant couples are somehow selfish? If you believe you'll be better whenever your parents are originally from there's nothing stopping you from going there

@@HitoriSanzo The point is that it's not selfless, and you don't really owe someone who only helped you by happenstance rather than out of an active concern for you. There's certainly no evils in trying to move to find a better life, but there's no inherent good in doing so either and there's no reason to allow that to be leverage over a person's agency. It's not about demonizing immigration, it's about recognizing that personal immigration shouldn't be used as a reason to attack the agency of others or to make them feel indebted.

I do disagree that the ending was wholly unrealistic, as the ending pretty much portrayed the dynamic between me and my parents. I will admit it’s rarer, but it DOES happen. My parents seriously thought they were doing the best for me but I completely broke out and couldn’t take it anymore, so they chose to support me with my own path. Sometimes, parents DO want what’s better for you- there’s just a disconnect between child and parent. I’m eternally grateful to my parents for managing to look past their standards.

I'm so happy for you, that your parents broke the tradition of disowning a child simply for being themselves. I'm proud of you, a stranger, to have had the courage to speak up and let them see that vulnerability, how much it hurt you. That must have been crazy hard. And we should continue to remember that our parents baggage doesn't have to be ours, and while it isn't easy to put it down and walk away, it's often better than the latter. Being butter and restarting the cycle. I'm so happy you were supported and loved. You deserve that, and so does everyone.

my thoughts exactly!! i had the same experience with my parents, and even though it's not as common, some Asian parents do accept their kids for wanting something different than what the parents had planned. i'll always be grateful for my parents, and i think it's important to emphasize that despite how unhealthy the "typical" depiction of Asian parent-child relationships seems, most of our parents really do love us no matter what.

@@listorin6314 Not surprised. Just by seeing the trailer, I assumed it was some cliche Disney movie with the following predictions:
      • Ember's parents intentionally force her to take over their "family tradition" and get offended at any opposition. Eventually, the parents support her to "do her own thing" (like Strange World and many other cartoons)
      • Ember and Wade will NOT fall in love (normally I wouldn't think this, but the recent "woke" Disney movies changed my thought process about their movies)
      • Together, the love interests will somehow unite all Element citizens to live together in harmony despite their differences with some main character speech (just like Gnomeo and Juliet. Surprisingly, only the Fire people were prejudiced against)
So yeah, it's one of those rare movies actually blew my mind by mostly going against expectations.
Mario movie was the complete opposite for me though, HIGH expectation but got me mostly disappointed...

The movie really hit home for us because my wife and I are an interracial couple. She's a first-generation American with parents from South Asia, and our first year of dating was very similar to Ember and Wade's relationship in the movie. It was kind of eerie how our past conversations and arguments seemed to align so closely with the film; it almost felt like we were reliving those moments. Needless to say, when we watched it, we both got pretty emotional and ended up in tears by the end.

It is still disconcerting to see that there are many countries that deal with immigration very poorly. I'm Brazilian, and my great-grandfather was a Portuguese immigrant who left his country to have a better life here. After more than 90 years that he left his country, my grandfather now discovered his documents in Portugal. Our family went crazy as we got information about everything! My great-grandfather named my grandfather, great-uncles and aunties in honor of his family. Everyone had his family name so it would never be forgotten. We cried so fucking hard when we discovered that. Everything made sense, my grandpa and aunts cried, my mother was so moved! I discovered that I have the right to Portuguese citizenship too, although I am Brazilian, I am the fourth generation too! Really nice. Brazil is one of the countries that had the most immigrants, miscegenation. The concept of race is completely different here. The movie portrays the life of immigrants very well, of difficulties and acceptance. Soon I'll be moving to another country to discover things, I will do my best now to discover my native Brazilian and African roots. And maybe more, you never know! ❤

I'm not even Asian (I'm an African American), but I can relate to my wants and needs coming second in favor of what my mom wants. Just recently, she gave me an ultimatum of "if you're not going to a team player, then you need to get off the team", which translates into "put your job searching/job training to the wayside and be your grandmother's caregiver or you're not welcome in my house anymore".
For proper context, I'm disabled and I have what I think might be a hernia I sustained years ago that is coming back to bite me in present day, but I was made to be my grandmother's caregiver because I'm the only person readily available who isn't working, but I'm in the process of getting job training. Plus I have disabilities that limit what I can do, especially as a caregiver and a lot of the tasks required of me as a caregiver and even outside of the task (my grandmother's house is cluttered and has a lot of heavy objects I can't lift on my own) that are detriment to my overall condition, yet none of that was considered. My availability was the only the my mother considered and not my overall capability while also forcing me to put my occupational goals to the wayside, which is made worse by her saying it "has to" be me, even despite knowing about my physical disabilities.
Update: In light of the drama that ensued from me having been my grandmother's caregiver over the course of four weeks and her just being... herself in general, my uncle ultimately decided that it would be for the better to hire a professional caregiver to look after my grandmother rather than have me resume the "job" (which should have been the plan in the first place since my disabilities make me a liability). Also. I wasn't expecting this comment to get over 1,000 likes or the responses from others who could also relate to my dilemma. I thank you all for sharing your thoughts. It truly means a lot to me.

4:10 That wasn't actually Wade's father, but his uncle. In fact, I think Wade either mentions or heavily implies that his father already passed away (no idea how). This is also one of the big reasons he empathize so much with Ember and her dad's relationship struggles.

    • @yeetgirltsubasa5235
      @yeetgirltsubasa5235 Před 8 měsíci +249

You're right!! It's only briefly mentioned in the final cut of the movie, but in the official novel of Elemental, Wade's side of the story is also shown. Wade and his father had a similar relationship as Ember to hers - Wade's father wanted him to choose one career path and focus on it for his life, and would even make sacrifices just to get Wade into sports teams as he himself was a sportsman. But Wade didn't like that because he wanted to explore many fields of interests instead of sticking to one, and this disagreement caused them to fight a lot. Wade's father died before Wade could ever make up to him, and since then, Wade was filled with regret. He became aimless in life and hopped from job to job, struggling to keep each of them.
When he meets Ember, he sees himself in her, and knows that although he can't bring his father back to life and reconcile with him, he can help convince Ember to communicate with her dad. Really sweet and it also shows a lot more untapped depth in Wade's character. In the movie, we only see Wade's impact on Ember, but I think Ember's impact on Wade is that he can finally reconcile with himself and come to terms with what he's lost.

7:10 you know some criticism's on this film was like "why didn't Ember's father like turn around and accept Wade after saving them at the end of the movie?" I think he's only upgraded from not tolerating him to somewhat tolerating him, the main focus of the film was Ember's relationship with Wade, and Ember's relationship with her dad. Truth is it didn't matter at all who he considered is fine for her daughter to date, but that he already wanted her to have her own autonomy.

Elemental is one of those movies (like everything everywhere all at once) where I wish I could explain all the cultural nuances and how much things mean and how hard it hits. Some of the lines ember and wade exchanged about “why don’t you follow your dreams or what you’re good at?” being shut down by “i can’t just do what i want to do because my parents sacrificed everything for me” are conversations I had with so many close friends. Everything about the movie was so realistic, from the fear of dating someone my family wouldn’t accept, to not being able to pursue my dream, to the little one liners about how proud my parents would be when I acted like a studious kid. There’s so so so much to unpack in the movie and it’s so realistic, and I definitely cried when wade couldn’t understand why ember didn’t just go for glass-making under the perspective that anyone can do anything they want, coming from a high income family with connections

definitely can relate to this. i come from a half filipino half mexican ethnicity… however, grew up more in an asian household than hispanic. anyways, feeling trapped and you feel like it’s the only way to make your parents happy and yourself happy-relatable. how i would have to become a nurse/doctor for what my grandparents wants me to be for their happiness. like Ember, i thought i would want to fulfill my family’s wishes, but as i get older, i realize that’s not what i want to be and do. and it’s hard to ‘easily’ pursue what you want to do without the fear of being disowned or have your family become more toxic. but i’m happy this movie got a happy ending with very supportive parents and Ember doing what she wants with Wade supporting her. almost made me cry so hard, just tears 🥹 i wish more asian/hispanic (any type of ethnicity) can become more understanding and open like this movie motivates me to have.

The burden of knowing how much your parents sacrificed was portrayed so well and that dilemma of whether you want to do what makes you happy or have a career that will support your parents/family was also portrayed well. I'm so happy and grateful that my parents are supportive of me following my passion in the arts field instead of going for a traditional job.

Im an Indian Immigrant, me and my family have moved SO MANY TIMES in 2 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. I was born in Abu Dhabi, UAE when my parents immigrated a few months after their marriage when my mom was pregnant with my older sister (im the middle child 😭)
My dad started a restraunt called 'Kusina Restraunt' and it atually did really well, it has 2 branches, one in Abu Dhabi and another in Dubai (he usually works at the Dubai one)
My mom got a transfer job as a nurse and started working, we moved like 5-6 times in Abu Dhabi and they always said that 'They did everything for us' even though THEY MOVED TO ABU DHABI for better work and more money.
I do sort of believe my mother when she says that she abandoned everything and did everything for us (i have 2 siblings) because she wanted to take the transfer to support her child (my sister) but she has a lot of partiality to my sister and my little brother (which you can expect because the asian stereyotype fits very well with my family, and so does the 'Older, Middle and Younger child' stereyotype aswell interestingly)
My dad is just a genuine asshole and says he does everything for us and abandoned everything even though he also buys things only for himself, sometimes even showing visible disgust at the thought of spending money on me and the rest of my family. He has 6 devices all to himself and 2 of em he dosent even use.
And ofc just like any asian parent he abuses me and my siblings and my mom..but ive gotten used to his hits but not to his words..whenever he says something its always so cruel and whenever he is angry he takes out that anger with physical, mental abuse and more.
We are now in the UK, we already moved once again 💀
Tbh i want my parents to divorce because of how toxic my dad is to my mom and her family and to me and my siblings.
But what can i say, we all have our problems.

Along with the fact that if I even slightly disobeyed them even on accident as a kid they would slap me simply because of a matter of being "being disrespectful". For anyome who reads this far, politely disagreeing is not disrespect. If anything, in my opinion, it is the highest form of respect. I agree with most of your take. The only thing I would change is the ending. No, it's not realistic for the parents to suddenly set aside their expectations for Ember and Disney is still guilty of dishing out a kid-friendly happy ending in classic Disney fashion. But I think it's a nice, if optimistic outcome. The moral of the story is that love can prevail. Wade's well-meaning sacrifice shows that Ember can be loved and the parents, despite all their expectations, just want what's best for Ember and would support her in whatever career would make her the happiest. I know it's not really reflective of a typical asian household, but it's something I wish were possible in every family, and it's absolutely a step in the right direction if there was one thing our parents could learn from a Pixar animated movie. Grown parents of immigrants are not the targeted audience, but it's the thought that counts.

from an outsider perspective (so- take this w a heap of salt, I'm just a humble white boi who likes movies) I was quite happy with the end. And I think it's important that they did this instead of the alternative.
I think modeling resolve is good, like in Turning Red or Encanto- It models behavior for a child to learn from. What could a kid have learned from Ember's family not ultimately accepting her? If you want your parents approval (as all kids do) enforcing that stereotype I think might be harmful... Because if the kids sees "well, her father was rejected, and he still feels fine rejecting her... That means there's nothing I can do to not be rejected, unless I ONLY do what they want." I think doing it like this, eventually if some kid who watched this movie grows up and IS shunned, and disapproved, they will already know that it is not right. That's not what was "supposed" to happen and they DID deserve better than that.
Any children from any immigrant background might look at this movie, as is, and see themselves in Ember and her father's relationship, or her father and HIS father's relationship. What I mean is- it's already shown what disapproval looks like, does long term, How her father was still able to leave and start new, have a good like. But it also shows how it feels and how it hurts us, and OUR kids even years after the fact... I think it would have harmed the message if the writers chose for it to repeat again. I think that robs the chance to see there is another way.
Wheels can break, and we need to show the next generation we CAN break those wheels. Otherwise, it will just keep going on and on.
That's just my to cents tho, I like seeing what others think on the matter who might have more first hand knowledge and experience about the topic. So if there is something I missed, or there is an issue with the point of my comment that I did not notice, please tell me!
      Love this movie

I’ve always felt that the movie’s focus was far greater on the immigrant story than the romance! Ember’s relationship with her father is emphasised more than her relationship with Wade. From the beginning, we’re shown Ember’s close relationship with her father, and it’s always reiterated how she wants to repay him and take over his shop as his daughter. Wade is the catalyst to Ember’s development, in that he shows her the world outside and helps her realise her bottled-up feelings, but even at the height of their relationship - like the romantic scene under the bridge when Ember and Wade learn that they can touch - Ember’s mind drifts back to her father, and how he told her, “I’m so lucky to have you (as my daughter)”, bringing her back to the reality that she’ll always be bound to following her father’s sacrifice, even if Wade showed her a glimpse of freedom.
That’s why I think the ending is really satisfying. I’ve seen a lot of people unhappy with the ending because it’s so vague - it doesn’t tie together Ember and Wade’s relationship, they don’t get married or anything! They just go on a boat trip for Ember to pursue her dreams. But to me, Ember and Wade were never the focus of the movie - Ember and her father’s relationship is the focus. Ember leaving the home that her parents created is a direct parallel to the very beginning, where her parents leave Fireland, also by boat. While Ember’s father was disowned by his father for choosing to leave for a better life, Ember’s father doesn’t do the same for her, and instead bows to her, a sign of respect that symbolises the breaking of generational trauma. The movie might be a romcom, but at its core, it’s about a complex father-daughter relationship that has to grow and change in order for them to live their own lives.
In the novelisation of the book, Wade’s side of the story is actually developed on, and it’s shown that he also has a very complex relationship with his late father. His situation with his father was very similar to Ember’s, except his father died before they could settle things, so their relationship is marked by regret. The novel honestly just further emphasised on complicated father-child relationships, and that’s something important to me because of my complex relationship with my dad (as an asian girl who desperately wants to live up to his sacrifice). So I’ve always felt that Elemental, while being a romcom, ultimately has its message in the relationship between Ember and her father, not Ember and Wade.
Anyway, I love the video! It was a funny watch, burst out laughing a lot. Elemental was the first movie that made me cry simply because of how much I related to it (I have NEVER related to any other movie this much), and seeing all the reviews calling it unrealistic and poorly-written made me feel so alone. But it’s nice to know that other people actually felt the same way about the movie as I did.

      @yeetgirltsubasa5235 Před 8 měsíci

@@sahlahanifa8402In the novel, Wade and Ember share almost-equal halves of the story as the chapters alternate between their perspectives! Wade’s father is named Dewey.
The first time we see Wade and Dewey is in Chapter 3, and immediately it’s established that they had a really loving and sweet father-child relationship (In this chapter Dewey comforts a terrified five-year old Wade, and brings him to the ocean, teaching him to “scream your big feelings into the ocean and let the water spread them out and smooth them away until you feel calm”. I’m guessing that that’s the reason why Wade brings Ember to the ocean, although it’s not explicitly stated.)
However, when Wade entered his teenage years, he and Dewey began to have a lot more disagreements. Dewey was a talented sportsman and wanted Wade to follow in his footsteps, so he went great lengths to personally schedule tryouts for Wade in waveball (in-universe baseball/basketball?). Wade missed both tryouts, because - in true Wade fashion - he got distracted along the way by the marching band. It’s here we learn that Wade wants to try everything, and hates the idea of being stuck to a single interest, so he’s constantly switching interests and exploring many things (he’s a go-with-the-flow guy, after all). However, Dewey wants him to settle down, be focused, and make a real decision for himself. It’s worth noting that Dewey never really forced Wade to do anything, but rather wanted him to choose a path and stick with it. Still, they both fought a lot and couldn’t make up.
After that, we’re shown Wade in his young adult years. In Chapter 7, Wade is a construction worker working with cement (this is actually referenced in the movie! Wade can’t get help from his construction buddies because he eventually accidentally causes a cement explosion). Wade mentions that he hoped to show his dad that he was right about his decision to explore everything instead of sticking to one field, but his dad died before that. By this it’s implied that they never reached an agreement or reconciled before Dewey died.
Unfortunately, Wade is also unable to hold a job lol. He gets fired from the construction job after causing the explosion (which happened because he got distracted when he was talking to the rest of the team. he managed to connect with them and get them to feel invigorated and inspired about their own lives, but then proceeded to forget the safety rules of his own job). He was also fired from his previous jobs - a shipment job that he lost because he got distracted talking to the other sales reps, and a guide job that he lost because he got distracted talking to the mayor and got them both lost. Wade begins to wish that Dewey was still here to guide him, because he’s starting to understand (now, too late) that his father was right and now he moves too much without being able to hold anything down for long.
That’s pretty much why he’s so desperate to help Ember. Wade knew that his father loved him, but was too stubborn to properly communicate with his father and reach an agreement before his father died. In Ember’s story, Ember wants to explore the world and try more options, but Bernie wants her to stay in Firetown, to continue running the shop and preserving their legacy. Bernie is also starting to cough and show signs of illness. Wade’s story parallels Ember’s story, but the difference is that Wade never got the chance to reconcile with his dad, while Ember still has the chance. So throughout the movie, Wade constantly pleads with Ember to talk to her dad, and insists “your dad will understand you. You have to try!” Because he knows that it’s way better than losing your father without ever trying to make that connection.
Real interesting lore to be honest. Wade had SO much untapped character development that the movie didn’t show. Wade definitely is going through some rough times during the movie, but we only see him as a side character to Ember’s plot. This is why I swear the movie isn’t about Ember and Wade, it’s about Ember and her father! The novel is about Ember and Wade! If you want to read the novel, it’s called “Unlikely Friends”, and while it’s a junior novelisation, I absolutely love the language in some passages.

Well the ending is also vague in that like, couldn't fire people sue for the flooding of Fire Town, since it could've killed them? Did they ever repair that dam?

    • @yeetgirltsubasa5235
      @yeetgirltsubasa5235 Před 8 měsíci

@@disgustof-riley8338the ending in the movie is also incomplete 😢! In the novel, it’s shown that after the flood, they take a few months to rebuild the town better than before with the help of the other elements. Gale utilises her city supervisor role and gets every able-bodied construction worker in Element City to fix the dam and rebuild Firetown. The Fireplace (Ember’s family’s store) is made a historical/cultural landmark (since it *is* the very first location where fire existed in Element City), so it cannot be torn down, only renovated to be safer. Because of this, Firetown opens its doors to the other elements too, which can be seen in the movie when other elements are customers of the store. (Hell, Bernie is even shown trying Water food.)
Ember’s departure by ship to pursue her internship actually only happens several months after the flood, instead of how fast-paced the movie made it seem. It was probably cut because of a lack of time.

My parents were at one point like Ember's parents but later in my teenage years, they realized that they were losing their daughter completely with their parenting methods. Sure it led to a horror look of me about to end everything but my father sure shut my mom down when he saw me that way. My mom acknowledges her past mistakes as a parent and I can see that in how they take care of my sister even if she is being a jerk at times. So I can relate to Ember a lot and how much she cares for her culture, her family, and her responsibilities she also realizes that she didn't keep any time for herself or knows any self-care at all. Wade just shows her a mirror of what happens when problems arrive and how she is unable to handle them other than bottling up her emotions. A lot of people do that including me, I am still unable to express any emotions other than speaking it out for others to understand. They did tell me everything they did was for us like earning money but they never used that in an argument saying i am ungrateful because they know it was their choice.

As a daughter of African parents who immigrated to Europe to build their careers. To offer a home and a better future to me and my siblings. (I'm the eldest)
I related to this movie so much cause even tho they may not realise it themselves. The pressure and fear of disappointing them after all they've done for us. Or even forget and letting down our legacy and community. It's real. And I felt so good at the end of the movie. It's the kind of film made for children, parents and young adults. Everybody can relate to it in differents ways imo.
I loved this movie and was so sad to learn that a lot of people didn't get the thematic.
It's not pixar greatest masterpiece but it has definitely become one of my favourite movie from the studio.
This movie is a gem and I hope it gets the recognition it really deserves.

I was one of the people who didn't have many expectations for the movie when it was being advertised, but once I heard it was an immigrant allegory I got curious and ended up enjoying the movie a lot more than some other Pixar movies because of how real it felt to me. I'm one of the lucky ones whose immigrant parents are very supportive but still gave me some generational trauma, so the parents not being completely toxic but still having those expectations resonated with me. As I knew more about Ember's family I was reminded of my own and the stories they told me of leaving their home and adjusting to America (in my family's case it was a war when they were teenagers). I think it's good that a movie like this was produced, for people to see and understand, both the good and the bad parts of a family life like it portrays.

Honestly, the, I did this for you is not Asian (or even POC) exclusive, and has a lot more truth than a lot of people let on. My dad pushed me (and still does) towards achievement in math and science because he’s seen where the high paying jobs in the future will be. He does want me to be a doctor, but hasn’t pressured me on that path. A lot of the lifestyle choices he has pressed me to make are a result of things he’s seen in his own life and in the lives of the people around him, and that I have actually found really reasonable (like hold off on dating and courtship until I am set in life, and make sure you have those assets divided and that prenup in place). I personally plan to allow my parents a lot of weight in my relationship when I set out to build one, simply because I know they’ve succeeded, and they’ve seen so many failures both in their family and their friends that they’ll be able to tell me something that I may not be able to see and save me a lot of hurt. Even within my own family I’ve been able to see for myself how my own siblings turn out when my mom didn’t heed my dad’s warnings regarding behavior patterns he saw early on.

At one point in my life when I was in my early 20s, I started dating a hispanic man and that caused so much problem. I struggled exactly what Ember went through, so much self doubt, self hatred, guilt, worry, etc.. It was many years of struggle, breaking up and coming back to one another only realize we love each other so much..We just kept coming back for each other out of love. It took many years till my parents turned around and accepted our love. Been together for almost 10 years now and we are happily married. Brilliant commentary. It gets a little better each generation so have hope KC. My grandparents immigrated to the U.S. around 1910 from Poland. My parents were the first generation born in the U.S. & much more modern but still had many conservative beliefs about how you should live & who you should marry. My grandparents were very foreign & old world (Europe) & poor. I'm the second generation born in the U.S. & share almost nothing with my late grandparents except my DNA! My parents had a very tough time with me & my sister when we were teenagers & we weren't even difficult but we smoked & wanted to date! So shocking to them. Anyway, you, the first born outside the "old country" will have the most difficulty with your parents, but you will not be like them so if you have kids, it will be much easier for them. It's the immigrant story around the world! Love this review!!
