I did it in the spring a couple yrs ago here in east tn with cheapo annual rye, dethatched and mowed down to basically the dirt. Added a crapton...haha...of my horses compost, harrowed it all in n then spread the seed, ab 20lbs total and watered 3x a day. It popped up great n I watered at least a couple times a day after it sprouted. It looked great all summer.
Last summer, yes in the summer...I dethatched and mowed super short again, n put down 100 bags of topsoil and then overseeded with around 25lbs of fine fescue and used scotts starter fert. That grew like crazy and it was July in East Tn 100 temp days!!
Its about 4000sqft. About a month ago I dethatched again and mowed it super short, then put down a weed n feed. If I didnt mow it I would have about a foot tall hayfield in my front yard already!!
I refuse to follow seeding rules hehe. I also seeded a horse pasture with annual rye in early Jan one yr, it was hip tall by March even with freezing temps off n on till then!

I'm in northeast ohio, I just finished a renovation/overseed with GCI Spreader Elite (spreading TTTF) and Beyond KBG. some areas are over seed and some are bare dirt. if you're in the Chicago area with 100 degree summer heat, we don't get that type of heat here. Ive seeded in the spring many times with good success, this time I'm using spreading grasses and hope the KBG is as successful as the fescue has always been. the fall is premergent time because poa annua is a major issue. going the spreading grass helps with that as well

I learned a good tip from athletic field pros on how to quickly get seed to root in soil. Use a cheese cloth and a 5 gallon bucket tonsoakmthe seed in water. Lift to drain and keep moist in garage. Once seeds begin to germinate spread in to area needing to get covered. It also gives the DIYer time and saves money on watering. I used peat moss to cover once spread out to achieve optimal moisture control.
Thanks for the research and info on your lawn.

I can’t speak for the Ultra Black Beauty in terms of seeding in the spring, however it does have mostly Tall fescue, Perennial Ryegrass and Kentucky Blue grass in the mix and looks absolutely beautiful when it is seeded, idk if it could be used in spring but I did it in the fall time, used that and the Sta Green natural fertilizer and watered. Got the best lawn on the block now. It bloomed in 10 days. Even having 5-10% Perennial Rye in a seed mix makes a huge transformation quickly. Idk if I’d go 100% Perennial Rye because of the high maintenance 😂 but I am a big fan of Black Beauty Ultra.

Great vid George. Spring seeding is not ideal at least for us cool-season people but sometimes we just go for it. This year is extra tough with how cool it has been for many of us , keeping those soil temps low and then likely a quick switch to the heat which will likely stress such young grass. I seeded a couple trouble spots but super small , literally a few spots the circumference of a basketball each but not bothered if they do not take so well.
Over the years I have switched to mostly autumn seedings , as it just comes with much better results imo. The soil temps are nice and warm yet the days are getting cooler, long hours of morning dew , birds less crazy for the seed by me (compared to the Spring) and the cooler and shorter days help not beat the young grass up so much. If possible to wait , autumn is by far the best time to seed for us cool-season people.

@@PrincessCutLawnCare not looking great so far , with the overall temps. My soil temps here in Northern NJ have barely gotten above 50 degrees yet until the end of last week. We only had one or two warm days so far , if i had to bet I feel like we are going to get a brief Spring and right into summer. Luckily I am not seeding much this year, I want to keep the seeding to a minimum after a big reno last season ; especially since I want get back on a pre-emergent schedule.

I've seeded my patchy lawn with PRG two times this spring. I did part of it in March, and all of that grass is growing strong and doing very well. I had to wait for the sun to get a little higher in the sky to seed the back half of the yard, which is shady all winter. I put the seed down last week and today I saw widespread sprouting! Can't wait to get this yard filled in, and if any of this new grass dies off I can always re-seed in the fall.

I seeded 100% KBG in Spring (full reno front and backyard for the first time everrr) this year. It was a hell of a work..! it took 2-3weeks to germinate. i also seeded in a small tray and germination took 2 weeks.
Surprisingly lawn filled in entire area.
Lots of water to make young grass survive in summer. I used hydretain as well.
despite I used disease resistant KBG varieties, my backyard got fungus damage in many spots this month. it's been a learning process.
    I already applied Prodiamine.
I seeded in sma tray last week n put em outside, and they already started germinating within 5 days. end of summer/Fall is definitely better for seeding KBG, as many people say. But, Spring seeding KBG is still possible. just more work.
I hope I won't need to overseed in next Spring 🤞

Thanks for all this info on planting tall fescue. I have learned so much about lawn care in watching your videos as well as others. It's hard to find info on the steps involved. I like how you did in sections. I have a lot of weeds in my yard. First I'll kill the weeds and crabgrass. I have a lot of thatch in my yard. So, next I'll either rent or buy a dethatcher so my seeds can get good contact with the soil, fill in the low spots etc. I'll make sure to spray the tenacity to prevent what I'm trying to get rid of! Anyway, thanks for simplifying things!!

The PRG should be less of an issue with the super quick germination. KBG at anytime but Spring in particular is super frustrating with the slow germination and dealing with sprout and pout most often. I have a predominantly KBG lawn but been mixing more and more PRG in and for me the lawn looks better and been healthier since doing it. The PRG for me greens up quicker out of winter and summer dormancy and the quick germination is always a plus.

I had to decide between getting rid of the ugly weeds or do some over seeding. My local seed supply house recommended to do post emergent three weeks ago and this Mother's day weekend to apply post emergent.

Both of you guys mentioned the importance of watering. When you are seeding patches like in both examples, are you watering the whole zone 3 times a day or just those spots? I'm asking because Brett said he had an irrigation system watering 3 times a day. Seems like the established seed would be getting frequent shallow watering versus the typical recommended infrequent deep watering. Are you simply sacrificing optimal conditions for the established lawn when reseeding? Thanks for your advice and for the video!

    • @PrincessCutLawnCare
      @PrincessCutLawnCare  Před 2 lety +1

Once the seed germinates you will switch to deep and infrequent waterings until the high temps sit in, then you would continue your deep and infrequent waterings along with watering lightly 3 times a day to keep the baby grass cool, sorry i should have been more clear

Hey buddy.. so im on day 13 of my seed project.. the PR is coming in really good in my bare patches! Ran into 2 issues.. 1. I couldn't put down tenacity with my seed because it was 90s that week.. I was nervous it was going to not work and/or stress out the grass so I do have quite a bit of weeds popping up. Not really sure when to spray.. some people were saying a month? Im not sure what's right there. And 2nd the grass where the bare patches are NOT.. its getting soooo long so I have to cut already. My bare patches are getting longer tho.. almost 2.5 inches for the new grass. Luckily I got alot of sprouts day 3 thru 5 with the rye so I'm just debating whether to reel mow or use my Honda. I hate putting the heavy mower on the grass but some spots are maybe 5 or 6 inches long, some areas are 3ish inches..I'm just worried about the long areas and if bagging would be best. Not sure if the reel mower will cut that long of grass either without me going over it multiple times. Ughh decisions... if you have any advice on either of these let me know! Sorry this was long.. I always tell my husband I'll ask George haha.. hes like who's that? Princess cut duh.. hes like oooh well why didn't you say that?! That's what he knows you as lol 🤦🏼‍♀️

Great video! I live in Ottawa, Ontario so I always overseed with cool season grasses like Fescue. My backyard dies every winter and I don't understand why. It looks great in the Fall and winter absolutely destroys it so that there's nothing left come Spring and I'm starting from scratch. I was tired of starting from scratch so last year I seeded clover thinking a weed would be more hardy. Well the same thing happened and 2/3 of the clover died. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I'm going to purchase a PH Meter this weekend so see if that tells me anything about the soil levels.
