Nissan E-NV200 reduction gear oil change. Yes EVs do have oil !

- In this video, I show you how to change the reduction gear oil in a Nissan E-NV200 electric van. This job is not part of the standard service schedule, but I recommend that it is done at least every 50,000 miles. We do this on all Nissan Leaf and E-NV200s we sell that have done over 20,000 miles.
The oil to use is Nissan Matic S, which is a synthetic ATF oil. Suitable alternatives are Castrol Transmax ATF Z, Castrol Transmax ATF Dexron VI, Comma MVATF Plus, Shell Spirax S6 ATF X and many others.
Unfortunately, issues with the single speed reduction gearbox on Nissan E-NV200s are not uncommon. It is normally the differential inside that wears and in worse cases the teeth on the side gears can break. Changing the oil can only help. But not using all the torque available to the driver is the best method for preserving the reduction gearbox life!

Thanks Matt for showing what needs to be done .
After i saw a fellow leaf owners picture of the size of chunks on his car lower sump plug i got my 2015 Leaf done this summer just gone ..
Yes it did cost me £120 at my Nissan main dealer on the island but it was cheaper than a gearbox specialist who wanted £200 to do it all here on the Isle Of Man.
I still cannot get over that nissan say it’s sealed for life & does not need doing .
Enjoyed that Matt, I love watching any mechanical work. Although I can't manage it myself any more I've still got a pretty good ear (learnt at my late dad's knee) for knowing if there's something wrong and can have a good stab at what it might be. That skill will be almost redundant with the change to ev!
The other thing about these videos is that it gives us even greater confidence in buying from you because we see the skill and dedication which goes into your preparation of the vehicles for delivery. Thanks, its really appreciated. 👍
Thanks.
Torque to 25 ft-lbs, both. Use any fluid very similar to Nissan Matic S type, which is in the Dexron VI and Mercon LV class too. In the U.S., (Leafs only, no NV200 EVs) I recommend Valvoline MaxLIfe ATF since it has more anti-wear chemicals than most other choices, but really any Dexron VI or Mercon LV compatible fluid works fine.
Your videos are always interesting and informative, thank you Matt.
Thanks.
Great information, good to know, thanks.👍
U remind us *terribly important n excellent reminder to remove *fill in plug first, (I don't recall other video remind this very important reminder n money saving tip 2 buy set of wrench set. Well done indeed! Rest video is detailed as it should be very well done! USA
Thanks :-)
Just bought one of the syringes you were using. Useful info'.
Well you do in fact learn something new every day :)
Excellent tutorial easy to understand :) thank you
Thank you
When the gearbox is in operation the oil is flung everywhere. Steel wear particles will stick to a magnet if they happen to pass by very close, which is highly likely to happen in less than an hour. Nothing much happens when the gearbox is not in operation so it doesn't matter a hoot whether the magnet is located in the drain or fill positions, as long as it's prominently positioned in the oil flow during operation.
Thanks for the video ❤
Glad it helped
Thanks I know what to look for on e expert van
thank you
Great informative video as always Matt 👍
One question : Do Renault Zoe's have oil too ?
Yes. All EVs do.
Due to the colour of that oil (usually red I believe for transmission oil) I guessing 25-30k transmission oil change is recommend not 50k
I'd be giving that subframe a wire brush and wax oil while it's up on the lift
All Nissan's are like this.
@@GoGreenAutos more the reason to do it then
Hi Mat, Does the Kia Nero take the same oil, good video by the way.
No. Most other EVs take a manual transmission oil. Use the Castrol or Shell oil finder to see what it takes.
@@GoGreenAutos Thank Mat.
Wonder if that’s been changed before and they’ve put the fill plug back into the drain by mistake, hence the larger amount of swarf on it.
Unlikely. Can't see anyone not wiping both plugs clean before reinstalling.
If it has been tightened too hard by irresponsible tech using air gun, or rust, then better loosening up first by lubricating n spray and gently hammering by using hard plastic hammer. so wont' damage small plugs.
I just cant believe they put a reduction gearbox on it?! Surley direct drive isnt an issue like in Electric Cars, the Renault Zoe ZE50 doesnt have reduction gear box on it does it? if it does I might sell it before 40k miles lol
Yes all EVs have a reduction gearbox, including the Zoe. The Porsche Taycan has two speed!
@@GoGreenAutos woah! Really that's crazy I hadn't come across this before! In that case thank you so much for making this video!
@@SustainableGal You might find these interesting...I've done some videos looking inside a reduction gearbox, see www.youtube.com/@GoGreenAutos/search?query=reduction%20gearbox
Ohh
someone said to me only liquid electric cars needs is wiper fluid
now i know its needs oil change too.
If you follow the manufacturer's service schedule, they don't need an oil change, so they were correct in saying they only need windscreen wash (and brake fluid).
and brake fluid and coolant
I was under the impression that the ATF needed for these gearboxes is not “Normal” grade, but “S matic” grade!
You have a drain plug, a level plug, and at the top side hidden by the HV wires, a fill plug, but filling through the level plug is normal!
My e-NV box disintegrated it’s teeth at 60,000☹️and on inspection, all the teeth were captured by the two magnets, with no loose shrapnel in the cases, so what you see on the magnets is what has loosened.
It is possible to remove the gearbox with the engine in the car, the subframe does not get in the way,
@@rogercrier9115Interesting, I never knew there is a filler hole under the bonnet.
Ah, not an EV but I guess I should change my gearbox oil in a 2007 megane with 205,000 miles...perhaps ? 🙈🤔
I have done 110000 miles on my Leaf and never did this!
I'd recommend you do this asap then!
@@GoGreenAutos Maybe in the summer, too cold now :)
It's the same with ice cars with "life time timing chain" witch might only be 150-200k miles (even if you do 5k oil changes, some do 12-18k manufacturers intervals or 12 moth witch ever comes last not first or when engine starts making noises)
But usually because of poor oil change service cycle or/and incorrect oil type or the grenade pin tensioner type spring fails causing the timing belt go out of timing (stops putting tension on chain guides and then self-destruct, it's actually very common failure the grenade pin type tensioner with bad oil changes as well causing the other problems)
There are people driving around in CVT type cars that have never changed their CVT oil or unaware that they should do it
I've done 105000 miles in my leaf, think I'll get the oil changed.
just stop oil !
