Isn't that interesting. I have a late uncle, and heard the same about him. A Hollywood chauffer was interviewed and reported he had taken a disguised Lucille Ball and Elizabeth Taylor to a church in Los Angeles. He said he heard them saying they didn't go for the preaching but to feel the Gospel music mostly led by African Americans. Where words, fail, music speaks. As you admit to enjoying listening to Black Gospel I must admit I love listening to intelligent atheists.
Wow. This is saying a lot!! I pray you find a church with incredible black gospel music because I know it would be powerful enough to get you to at least TRY and understand what the Word of God is all about. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
A 'classic scene'... barefoot servant into a Black Church, singing Gospel, rediscovering his faith or perhaps going along with the magic of the moment... Look at the participants, all have the trademark of what it takes to be in that Church, look at the little girl's face and her expression, what a great scene !

Pure theatre and sheer magic! And Bert, he always had such an awe-inspiring look on his face, and in those eyes of his, strengthening, but at the same time uplifting. He was perfect for this role, and that of the Rainmaker, as his enthusiasm and apparent faith and earnestness were infectious. An irony that he championed many good causes, and retained his working class roots, and old friends, not mixing with the elite...but was either an atheist, or agnostic. Apart from Charlton Heston, I cannot think of anyone who conveyed the deepest spiritual roots. And this scene portrays that with the ease with which he becomes one with the gospel choir, and their song. What an entrance!!! Remarkable scene and moments! MAGIC!

The great multi talented Burt Lancaster. no dubbing required for his singing. no stunt men required for him either as he was a natural athlete and did his own stunts.

@Wolfgang H oh.no doubt. "Sweet Smell of Success," "From Here to Eternity," among many others. However, and this is just my opinion, I think this is the film is where I see a performance that is brilliantly done, but so inspired and complete that you can not imagine anyone else in the part. I have seen many performances that have won the coveted Best Actor/Actress/Supporting Actor/Actress, and in some of them, I could see why they got it, and some were head scratchers, but Lancaster's Elmer Gantry performance was one of the very few that left me with no doubt that he deserved it and had I been born and old enough to see the film in the theater, I definitely would have picked his performance right off the bat as the Best Actor Oscar winner.
@@TitanicHorseRacingLover there is no other actor in Hollywood that can claim as many Oscar nominations, not just for him, but for his co-stars, when you look at those that won , in his pictures, it reads like a who's who of old Hollywood: Donna Reed, Shirley Booth, Anna Magnani, Frank Sinatra, David Niven and Katherine Hepburn, not to mention those nominated in his movies that didn't win, such as Telly Savalas, Deborah Kerr ( several times), and Montgomery Clift, to name a few.

Possibly the greatest movie ever made.
It garnered him a Best Actor Oscar that year, and remains to this day, one of the most overwhelmingly iconic performances ever in Hollywood.....Absolutely no one else could have played this part the way he did, similar to Yul Brynner in the King and I.....Amazingly, Lancaster never won another Best Actor award, only a supporting award, however, in a great majority of his movies , his fellow actors won awards, as he was the equivalent of a great sports players who raises the game of everyone around him.
He was a team man, as he had some humility, and wasn't star-struck like many others! Perhaps, it was his Italian friends in New York who he grew up with who helped keep his roots alive.
The most impressive actor, the greatest film ever and singing beyond the comparison. Whole thing is beyond any comparison with trash flooded as "films" or "entertainment" to debilitated masses. Sorry!

A movie that will never get old, for the reason it tells the truth.
The song has a special meaning. The general religious meaning is clear and applies to everyone. But this is also a Negro Spiritual dating to the time of the Underground Railroad. Slaves saw the Exodus as having special meaning for them. The promised land was the end of the Underground Railroad: Canada, where slaves were fully free, and whose name shares the first four letters with 'Canaan', which was used as a code in many songs (just as the River Jordan was the Mississippi they'd have to follow). Slaves had had a 'mighty hard time' and were caught in the Devil's fire. Those leaving were on their way in a mighty hard 'climb' north to Canada, but had to guard against the slavery-capturing forces of Satan, waiting for them along the way, but with prayer, fighting and God's will they'd leave Satan behind them.

Burt was no only a fine actor he was also a great humanitarian. This I learned from fellow actors who were lucky enough to have known him personally and to have worked alongside him.
You can see the strength and compassion in his eyes and features, which is why he was brilliant in this movie, and the Rainmaker.
When I heard that Burt's performance in this movie beat that of Spencer Tracy in "Inherit the Wind" I thought to myself "There's no way he did better!". Then I decided to watch this movie and I decided that this performance not only made me a fan of Burt, but may have been just a little bit better, though they were both spectacular. I've always been a huge fan of Burt, he was an actor of incredible presence and magnificent talent.

This scene reveals many things in a short period of time,:
- He knows the lyrics off by heart, establishing his own highly religious past. Later in the film he's revealed to be a former minister-in-training who left to have a sexual relationship with a woman, and ironically his ministerial training taught him how to be good as a salesman.
- Although he sings the song with intense passion, there's a tinge of Sarcasm in his final lines. Indicating that he both has genuine religious beliefs and entered the church to enjoy the atmosphere, but also that he intends on using his salesman skills to become successful at being a minister and living the high life.
- He actually believes in charity, since in the next scene, after making himself known to this congregation, he does work for the church for free.

If you are a churchgoer, don't be afraid of attending a service at a "black church". Yes; the congregations are typically black, but anyone is welcome - and I'm saying this as someone who's not black, but who has black friends.

Not seen the film for many years, but it's on my Amazon list to buy. CZcams has a few excerpts of the film, and having read a few reviews too, it leaves me intrigued. Burt Lancaster, especially in this film and the Rainmaker, is on one hand so passionate and convincingly sincere, yet he plays the role of conmen, and apparently died an atheist, whilst at the same time virtuously doing much for worthy causes. And the pandemic again illuminates the fact real goodness co-exists with many hypocrisies and evil, proving that real faith is lacking everywhere amongst mankind, even amongst those who are 'apparently' good, and within this vacuous whirlpool of distrust and evil, which Satan has brought, aided and abetted by weak men, some seek the, or a Saviour, a way out, albeit through some form of inspiration. And this part of the film is so magical and wonderful, that it fulfils those needs, for are we not all weary journeymen, whose material excresences do not fool our inner spirit, which is cloaked with tattered clothes, and has become weary almost unto death of this endess journeying, without genuine beauty and purpose. And for those in need of direction, spiritual refreshment, and hope of victory for the light and their personal salvation, along with deepening one's resolve for the battles that surely lay ahead, then look no further than this song, and sing along with Lancaster whose deep, but bright blue eyes speak of life, and the promise of rejuvenation and renewal that brings with it some hope, courage and strength into the world for the fight against Satan. And this conflict occurs within and without, so grant us the mercy to discern the righteous path oh Lord, so that we may daily clamber those steps, one by one, to the heavenly heights..where the promise of eternal life will be fulfilled for all the faithful ones. Yes, this good morning, I shall do my best to mourn less, and sing out...I'm on my way...up to Canaan land!!!
Still on my way, but after seeing an excerpt of the films end, Burt makes these ironies as clear as day will allow, for it is but a journey we are on, and it is not right to claim perfection at any point...simply in the moment to do our best whilst along 'our' way, for when I was a child, I thought like a child, and understood as a child, but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 1st Corinthians 13:11.
My take on the cinematic Elmer Gantry is that he was a conman/salesman who genuinely wanted to be liked and make people laugh and didn't want to harm anyone with his con. It was more like a game with him, like that guy played by Tony Curtis and Leo DeCaprio who impersonated various people. Notice how he cons a bar full of people into donating money to a woman asking for charity. He does it because he knows he has this gift of blarney. But in the movie, he never uses his gift to purposely hurt or cheat anyone. He joins the spiritualist Sharon Falconer because he's smitten with her and he helps her cause not to make money but because he wants to please her. He has no meanness in him; never holds a grudge against the cynical newsman Leffords, even laughs when Leffords shows how he sees through him. He is truly sorry for the way he hurt Lulu Baines. At one point he seems amazed by his ability to rouse people with his sermons. In this scene he was definitely down and out, just had his shoes stolen by a bunch of feral tramps on a train and needed the boost that a good rousing spiritual can give you. This movie takes place in the 1920s, and I wonder if a disheveled black man walking barefoot into a church full of white people would've been welcomed like this. Did the movie Gantry truly believe? I think so, but being a conman/salesman he probably saw organized religion as another form of showbiz. A great performance by Lancaster, capturing the full complexity of this character. I think Burt Lancaster was much the same way. This role was probably closest to who Lancaster was in real life. I don't recall any other actor who seemed to enjoy performing like Lancaster except perhaps for James Cagney. Both actors were bigger than life on screen and the characters they created verged on being over the top.
Both from rough, tough parts of Manhattan on various East Streets, full of immigrants, mostly Italians, Jewish and Irish. This mixture must have socially impacted upon their characters that were clearly no-nonsense types, with the ability to be really sensitive, or really tough. Both really good athletes too. They are 2 of my favourite actors, and I feel Lancaster really suited this role, along with that of the Rainmaker I think it was called. Both these roles required his unbridled passion for life to shine through the roles of conmen, and have us believe they were actually genuine and innocent within, which in a naive, childlike kind of way they were, as many rough necks from areas such as New York, and the heavy industrial towns and cities tend to be. And these areas produce natural actors and comedians by the score, just look at my home town, which has produced many top athletes, and was pivotal to 2 films, Kes and Brassed Off, set in the miner's strike, just like Billy Elliot. Always have the strong male roles, immersed with highly sensitive, hilariously funny characters. Great places to come from, not always to great to live and stay there though!
And they usally have an undying loyalty to their area, community, friends, and family, and are generous to those they grew up with, as they learned to truly share with an attitude of all for one, and one for all. Over half my town was owned by the Co-op up to the 30's, ensuring the wealth was shared almost equally.

You should read the book, very different from the one episode of Elmer’s journey. There are similarities with Robert Duvall’s The Apostle

I think you might be forgetting that Elmer Gantry was a FRAUD, a HYPOCRITE, a FORNICATOR and a LIAR who used religion to enrich himself. That was the whole point of the book/movie. Good song, though.

The movie is more charitable to Elmer than the book from what I've heard. Hollywood loves crooked preachers almost as much as crooked cops. But, there are great scenes in this movie. Are we so desperate for religious movies we'll take whatever we can get even, an Elmer Gantry?
