    Isn't this brilliant.
These two, with prestigious separate careers, but also with those careers so inextricably entwined that when one of them needs to tell a story in the company of a second principal who would not be dwarfed by him, the other one gets the call...
...and they do this, this musical comedy "thing" that neither one of them is known for, flawlessly, and (seemingly, but I know there was a sh*t-load of rehearsal here) effortlessly...
...and in front of the most demanding audience imaginable.
    BRILLIANT.

@@francaperotti5934 that's not true. Not all actors get an Honorary Oscar. Only those who have contributed a vast library of extraordinary work but who were never rightfully recognized by the Academy for sometimes dubious reasons. They are not 'participation' awards. These people had to actually EARN IT.

The ad for their last film together in 1986 said it best.

    Friends for years (they were)
    Legends for life (they are!)
Tough Guys Forever (they will be!!!)
RIP to the OGs who wrote the book on how it's done! I will miss them both along with 75 percent of the free world!!! It's great they weren't nominated for Oscars, cos Oscar is not cool enough for these two!!! Oscar to Burt and Kirk is a damn grouch that stays in the trash can!!! Boom!

Ironically, Lancaster arguably should have received a best actor nomination for his portrayal of J.J. Hunsecker, the ruthless columnist modeled after Winchell in "Sweet Smell Of Success" and Douglas also deserved best actor recognition for his performance as Colonel Dax in Kubrick's "Paths Of Glory". Douglas was acknowledged by his son Michael at the recent Screen Actors Guild Awards, at which Michael won for his Liberace in "Behind The Candelabra"; the elder Douglas is 97.
