- This, from the epic HBO miniseries "John Adams" is a scene where Adams, appointed to be America's first ambassador to Great Britain after the revolutionary war, is about to meet for the first time King George III. Here he learns the proper protocols in meeting the King, and learns the formal ways of acknowledging the royal presence.
The amount of detail they put into even historically accurate accents is why I really like this series.
Indeed.
As a brit I thought the English accents were terrible, we arent all west country farmers u know lol. The king was born in London. Not Bristol 🤣 having said that I loved the series. It was wonderful.
@@NettiGaming That's weird, as an outsider I far prefer the Bristolian/West Country accent FAR more bc it sounds as though London is currently trying to make all of southern England talk cockney or posh.
Also keep in mind that London sounded vastly different in 1785 than today, and it would have differed greatly at the court of St James. English accents sound like they do today bc of the classism of the Victorian education system
@@johncashrocks221 we have more than 2 accents lol but I take your point.
@@NettiGaming I mean, aren't regional dialects sort of dying out? No one in the West Country under 45 seems to talk wityh the accent anymore
The guy playing the chamberlain does a great job
He played that ass kissing monk on the Cadfael series.
small roles make a movie or show as much as big ones
I cannot imagine how awkward it must’ve been for John Adams to meet the leader of the very country that he signed a Declaration of Independence against.
The king actually held great respect for some of the founders. After all it was the parliament that waged war against the colonies. The king simply did his duty toward his people and went along with their decision.
@@zyzor
Didn't he actually fire a government a put a new one without parliament support, to continue pursuing the war?
@@iddomargalit-friedman3897 the king pressured lord north to stay on and continue the war, but eventually he had to compromise with a new ministry that he didn’t fully embrace.
The word awkward probably doesn't describe it

That's a good wife. She knows every thought that is going through his head and it shows. She has sympathy. She knows how hard this must be for John.
and she aint a ho.
I love how the show portrays John Adams as feeling terribly inconvenienced by just about everything in England 🤣🤣🤣
Abigail was a genius in her own right.
Abigail is probably my favorite First Lady next to Dolly Madison. He was just as ballsy as her husband.
Her eyes tell an entire story here.
Brilliant actress and even better editor for this scene.
Adams: "Bro, he's not my king anymore. If I have to go through all that Ima wearing a t-shirt that states "Straight Outta Yorktown."
technicaly he was... King george could easy put him to death as part of REBELION of HIS COLONIES.
Straight outta Concord might be more appropriate, for Adams anyway

For one reason or another, the scene where he actually meets King George III has totally been removed from CZcams, and has been that way for almost 2 years. It's unfortunate, because it is one of my favorite scenes of the series.
Yes I saw that scene quite a few times on YT, but strangely for some inexplicable reason, it has been removed. It was quite an awkward meeting. After an uncomfortable long silence, only a few sentences were exchanged. "I was the last to consent..."
@@envitech02 You got awkward. I got something else from that scene.
The King had almost a "disappointed father" attitude towards Adams and the actor who portrayed King George did very well at displaying these emotions. He had tears in his eyes but in a way that expressed anger not sadness. He barely moved or blinked, only a continuous stare directly at Adams for the duration of the meeting. The few words they exchange are diplomatically pleasant yet have an undertone of disdain. The meaning I took from it was "Duty" because it was clear that ideologically they were not aligned in the slightest.
I came looking for the scene myself but stumbled on this comment. I assume that HBO had something to do with it because they get salty at their clips being posted, hence Borko.
Very disappointing. There was some incredible discussions on the comments section of the video.
I've tried posting it before but it gets taken down instantly. I just watched it again on that stupid new name for HBO and it really is a brilliant scene. This video starts at 33:36 in episode 4 and leads into the conversation with King George if y'all got access

Ocean’s rise. Empire’s fall. We have seen each other through it all…
Paul Giamatti hit a home run in this great series.
Mr. Adams seems to have a hint of doubt in his confidence but still he makes a valiant effort to show full respect to the King. It really must've been stressful for John Adams. ' man I hope I don't piss king George off, '
That boat sailed once Adams put his name on the Declaration.
Love the suggestion of Adams to change into a more "British" attire. British fashions at the time favored mostly on darker colors, their woolen materials, and more refined cuts. The more fanciful silk coat that he picked up for the French court would of been displeasing and chided in the British Royal court. French fashions were widely mocked and lampooned at the time and there are many caricatures that show that.
What happened to the video of the meeting between John Adams and King George!? They use to have it but now it's nowhere to be found! That was the best part!

President John Adams....good luck
Very hard way to salute for a man that fought for a republic (who elects his president, not be ruled by a king), and to present his respects to the same man who condemn him to death by hanging, and then started a war that kill so many of his brothers in arms. My God, how complicated is diplomacy!
King George III was actually very pro democracy
@@helwrecht1637 well, you should show me how, since he condemned people to death by hanging for standing against monarchy, like every monarchy in Europe 😂
Ehh I’m not sure about that the British weren’t evil in the war they saw it as a rebellion which had to be surprised adams understood that
America has been a corporation to Britian and the Vatican the entire time. The Three City States paint a disturbing picture
With few exceptions, presidents nowadays are installed, not elected by the people. “A republic madam, if you can keep it.”
"Perhaps a change of attire would not be unwarranted sir" "what would you suggest"? "perhaps something a little more English" I love that line !! 😅😅.. I laughed my ass off 🤣🤣 The English kill me .. 😂 In a good way though .. ☕

One can’t be sure until you get a look at it’s teeth.
Lots of “he shouldn’t bow” smug self-righteousness but no bows or respect means no diplomacy. If you wanted a meeting, you bow. Adams, being sensible, swallowed his pride because normalising relations with Britain was of greater import than his ego.
What I love is that the person doing this is also the lowly man American man approaching the prince in Downton Abbey.
The original video got deleted by CZcams sadly. Including the scene where he meets Louis XVI. Can you upload those videos?
I noticed that. I was trying to find it today to show to a friend and it wasnt there :(
I remember the actual meeting with George. The scene was very moving and the language used extraordinary. Adams showed more than due courtesy which greatly impressed George. I remember George's words, 'I was the last to recognise the independence of your new country, but will be the first to build a friendship.' (or words to that effect).
I was there at your assassination.. Sad time indeed it was.
It's bloody annoying when CZcams does that!
RIP :(
This guy "advising" Adams is truly getting his jollies offending him in every conceivable way. It would have been great if Adams had said, "Forgive me, sir. I just got back from Yorktown. It's a lovely place. I'd be happy to show you sometime."
"Mr President, and nothing more."
Awesome scene. Paul giamatti brought it.
The characterization of George was excellent but there was no resemblance or similarity of character between the historic Louis XVI and the character in the series
The actor playing George III did him well. Though in appearance his face is considerably less round than George III.
One of the best series ever.
Wish they made more historical

Abigail Adams: Oh Heavens. This is not going to go well...
A friend, who had to take a one-day drunk driver's course, as part of getting his licence back, joked that he almost had to go through this, when he was there. He also said they failed this one guy, for having sarcastically told them he didn't need the course, to know how to be a drunk driver.
I like how they use dutch angles and shaky cam when Adams is in frame to show how uncomfortable Adams was
Imagine having to bow to a King whose ass you just Royally kicked in a war.
It's called diplomacy. When you're in another country and want to foster good relations, you follow their protocols, even if they seem alien to you. If the US protocol for meeting the president was to hand him a dozen roses and kiss him on the cheek, and I were tasked with being a diplomat to the US, you'd better believe I'd hand him those roses and give him a kiss. Same goes for any country.
@@philbateman1989 no doubt. And I thought the exchange went as well as it could given the circumstance. The British press were dickheads about it. Absolutely fuck those guys.
@@danielmoore411 and the press in the US was much better?
To be fair, there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between (with substantial foreign help and aid) winning a war in colonies on the very edge of a vast Empire (and where the King must answer to a Parliament and part of the reason you won is that the war wasn't viewed as worth the cost anymore), and actively deposing the King of a vast Empire from his throne in his home country. America may be free at this time, but America is nowhere near equal to Britain in either power or reputation at this time. In short, this isn't some King whose country you defeated having to beg for his life or his position at your feet, this is a King who you just managed to convince (and actually it was his Parliament that forced his hand, HE wanted to continue fighting so the King wasn't really convinced anyway) that your independence was worth it if it would get you out of his hair.
@@remo27 but he did lose. Period. Britain couldn’t afford to drain their resources fighting the colonists. The colonies had become too big and available resources to wage that war had become too meager.
On a positive note: King George said rather rosy remarks about the meeting and praised Adams for the discussion; but the British press refused to note on that and that led to of course the different papers to rag on Adams in many forms.
Poor John Adams. His son shared his “awkwardness”.

God as an English girl and a midlander I found it so funny that they all had west country accents (Bristol). Which I doubt the king would have had. Other than that I loved the series. Even to us English Georgie boy was a nutter!
King George was played by Tom Hollander, he doesn't have a west country accent....
Actually, it was only in the 19th century that we Brits began to divert towards the recieved pronounciation that our upper classes now have, and the 'cockney', 'brummie' and other urban accents that came with the melting pot of the growing manufacturing cities. In the 18th century and earlier, particularly in the south of England, the rural accents of the West Country and Norfolk/Suffolk would have been far more dominant, and recognisable as 'English', and were not dictated nearly as strongly by segregations of class.
Ben Crystal, the Shakespearean stage actor and language expert, gives a wonderful example here of how much better and more natural 16th century Elizabethen English pronounciation of Shakespeare's plays sounded- czcams.com/video/iqmgeth4tFY/video.html
Remind you of Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall? It sure does to me! It isn't identical and some words sound drawn out in this accent- Mutiny as MEwTinAyyy for example, but it matches how words are spelt much more closely. This is the accent that came before ours deviated from the Americans, and the sort of West Country Bristol-sounding accents they use for the founding fathers are a pretty solid guess at what Colonial American and English accents would have shared before our seperation that saw a diversion of our accents that leaves us where we are today.
P.S. Sorry for the essay.

Don’t worry Mr Adams, it’ll be all ok.
The costuming is exquisite and all of the detail, the accents, the hairstyling and lack of make-up are such fine and accurate details that add to the realism, but then they film the actors under bright studio lighting. I wonder why they didn't choose to shoot it using natural light.

I wonder of Adams was really so awkward and sloppily dressed in real life. Is it presumed he was like that, or is this based on actual historical evidence? The manners depicted in this excerpt probably weren't quite so foreign to the colonial ruling class.

Not bowing. To hell with that. Fought long and hard to not call a man "King". Lost many lives, sacrificed much, too much to kowtow to class based royalty that would treat us like sub citizens in an empire built on the backs of others.
Well if you want good relations with the UK - which at the time was the most or 2nd most powerful nation in the world depending on your source - you would have to engage with diplomacy to establish good relations as the UK has that power. The British Ambassador in Washington DC would likewise have to bow and scrape in front of the US president whether he liked it or not to maintain lucrative UK trade with the USA. Furthermore, all empires are built on the backs of others including the american one.
Blue pilled take
It's not a bow as a subject, it's out of respect for the king in his own country. An ambassador has to be extremely polite as part of his job.
You do this after war. Follow the customs, eat the beans, ride the trolly.
