Is the Freewell magnetic filter the best out there? Any color cast? Will the cross affect my cinematic toneh 1.4 videos in bright sunlight? I plan on getting only 67mm filter threads lenses: sony 20mm and 85mm. Would you swap the 85mm for a Tamron 28-70? Is the G1 still reliable? Prices have went down recently.

    @JohnDrummondPhoto Před 2 lety +1

    The other advantage of 82mm filters with step-up rings is that you'll virtually eliminate vignette, even on an 82mm lens.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto Před 2 lety

      @Huo Shing because its diameter is slightly wider than the lens opening. Vignetting is caused by the slight shadow cast by the edge of the filter as light enters the lens at the perimeter. The thicker the filter rim or the closer the filter diameter is to the lens diameter, the more vignetting. When you put an 82mm filter on, say, a 77mm or smaller diameter lens via a step-up ring, you'll get little to no vignette because the filter rim shadow will fall outside the lens opening.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto Před 2 lety

      @Huo Shing if you mean that "X" pattern that can happen (I think Kasey showed an extreme example of that in this video), that's a different issue unique to variable NDs. You can get vignetting with any circular filter (e.g., regular ND or polarizer), especially on wide angle lenses. In fact, very wide angle lenses tend to vignette slightly just from their own construction, even without a filter.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto Před 2 lety

      @Huo Shing variable NDs are actually good for video. Just get the right one for your lens and use the right setting for the light and your shooting speed. For photography I recommend regular NDs if you need longer shutter speed than the light allows.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto Před 2 lety

      @Huo Shing you mentioned 14mm. Is that a prime? Or an APS-C lens? Most full frame 14mm lenses have very bulbous front elements that you can't even put a filter on.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto Před 2 lety

      @Huo Shing oh, an action cam. Not at all what Kasey was reviewing or what I was talking about. I don't know enough about what filters fit an Insta360 to comment any further.

    I get the ND thing…very useful. But I’m struggling to see any benefit whatsoever of mist filters. What am I missing? Perhaps an alternative would be to buy one of those pointless UV filters from yesteryear and cover it with olive oil (extra virgin). That would have a very similar effect!

    • @briandipierro8865
      @briandipierro8865 Před 2 lety +1

      I don't personally like the look sometimes, but I could see its application being great in some shots. Though the cheap UV filter with like, Vaseline or oil is a great idea. Home done things like that can get some unique looks, I'm gonna have to give that a try.

    • @PoeInTheDitch
      @PoeInTheDitch Před rokem

      It's just a personal preference thing. Mostly, it's gained popularity because of modern digital sharpness and definition...it shows every wrinkle and blemish in skin in ultra high Def. Turns out, most people don't like it. So, kinda weirdly, we're slapping diffusion filters on high resolution lenses to make them less sharp. Also, makes gas stations at night look dreamy. Lol. But, hey, to each their own. I like to have the option there if I want it.

    hello i use a Sony a6000 and when i shoot portraits in a forest location such as in your video and all my photos are EXTREMELY green. is there a technique to fix this? i use eyedrop color balance on eye pupils in photoshop but it doesn't work - everything remains green, so instead i just ramp up the purple. is this a case of when using a color chart that you take a photo of at the site will fix this problem and then calibrating each color on the chart?
    do all cameras have this problem when shooting in foliage or is it exacerbated by me using a sony a6000? because my god the portrait faces are just completely green like a sludge monster. or perhaps i should use a different software than lightroom or photoshop for processing sony a6000 images?
    i know it's reflected light from the forest but this is way too much... thank you for any advice regarding this (anyone!)
