Why I've Been GoPro'ing All Wrong (4:3 vs 16:9)

  • Guys. I haven't been using the GoPro's full sensor when skydiving, and it turns out I've been missing out on a lot.
    Here are my updated GoPro settings. I shoot on a Hero 7 Black, but this applies to all the newer GoPros as well. And I'm probably going to upgrade to the Hero 11 this fall - but man I wish GoPro would come out with an HDR sensor this year! I'd be the biggest fanboy.

    I had a similar revelation about switching to 4:3 and cropping in post when I used to record my ice hockey games. The extra real estate gave me flexibility to crop to the good stuff and to not worry if my camera got knocked up or down during the game. Very handy; glad you’re sharing this tip with the world!

    Thanks for posting this Mark. I've been banging on about the same thing for a while now having noticed so many sky videos cropping off chunks of the action, so it's good to see someone with more experience saying the same. I take my 7 Black scuba diving and it's the same deal there too, so I go full sensor. I can understand the impatience of those that want to share immediately in big screen-friendly format, but a bit of post is so much easier these days.

      What really drives me crazy now is the SuperView skydiving videos, where everything is super wonky at the edges of the video.
      You'd be surprised at how many pro skydivers still shoot at superview 1080p and GoPro color even on the latest GoPros. Like, why upgrade?

    Many thanks for sharing! I just started to use my gopro 11 last week so it's good to know. I checked with the Quik app preview mode and the top and bottom is cut if I switch from 16:9 to 4:3, crazy stuff... the area covered with 4:3 wide is matching with 16:9 superview just with much less distorsion. I'm so grateful, thank you so much!!

      On the H11B I'm shooting in 8:7 for skydiving and other action, but go to 16:9 for anything handheld. It really captures an insane height and you don't have to worry so much about camera position - then adjust it while editing.

    4:3 is best for action. You get a taller frame. It especially helpful when someone is jumping because it give your more space vertically

    Hello! Does SuperView crop the vertical viewing angle from its original 4:3 size? Or does the frame stay full and only stretch horizontally to 16:9?
    Do I understand correctly that you prefer to remove distortion at the edges, to the detriment of the vertical coverage angle?

    • @PernDog
      @PernDog  Před rokem +1

      Superview doesn't crop, it smushes the vertical frame 4:3 down to 16:9 - so you get the feel of a wider angle. But this does introduce distortion especially around the edges of the image. People look like they're kinda in a funhouse mirror.

    I still use super old digital compact camera, a Nikon A100 and the sensor is 5.152 x 3.864 (4:3) which is 20MP and more then enough..
    Pictures look stunning in the original aspect ratio! In this mode the camera also has the option to record pictures with less compression and higher Quality.. 😀

    What's your opinion with the GP11 latest 8:7 ratio? Do you think that the 4:3 is already enough to crop for the 16:9 and 9:16?

    • @PernDog
      @PernDog  Před rokem +2

      It’s wider and taller, with a bigger sensor. I just picked one up. Haven’t jumped with it yet but the added vertical and horizontal room means you can capture a bit more than the GP10 and below

    What will be the best workflow to edit a footage like this ?

    • @PernDog
      @PernDog  Před rokem

      The workflow I use is pretty basic, but it's working for me. I got the new GP11 and use the "natural color" setting so I don't have to use any LUTs. I do a basic color correction for the entire clip - set white balance and drop the shadows for better contrast.
      I simply drop the clip into a 16:9 project, and then use the position adjustment to set each clip to the framing that I want. Then I apply an adjustment layer for sharpening.
      I also have a basic audio adjustment for GoPro sound, especially if there's any voice. It reduces noice and then adds a bit of top end for clarity. The new GoPro really does a stellar job with audio and video quality. I need to update my skydiving settings but haven't been jumping much lately!

    Can you put the 1080p video on a 4k timeline and upload that? The CZcams compression on 1080p is terrible.

    • @PernDog
      @PernDog  Před rokem +1

      Great point - yes you will get better CZcams video quality from a 1080p uploaded in a 4k timeline because CZcams automatically gives better bandwidth.
      Most of my videos are done at 2650x1440p because I get great resolution from the 4k videos, they don't take too long to upload (dang Comcast) and it's a nice balance for my editing machine.
      I'm going to upgrade everything to 4k editing and shooting this year, but it's going to be a slow process.

    Its not just gopros but all cameras. Imo they should have also kept the 4:3 standard for tvs and monitors. Much better suited for human field of view. Some companies are allready starting to realize how impractical is 16:9 for tablets and laptops. Maybe 16:9 will go into history as a mistake.

    • @ImMora1
      @ImMora1 Před rokem

      honestly, the only reason we are so used to 16:9 is because a lot of media is being watched on smartphones, where 16:9 really makes a lot of sense as they need to be narrower to fit in a pocket. doubt that it will change anytime soon.

    • @nathanpollard1223
      @nathanpollard1223 Před rokem

      @@ImMora1 Not true. 16:9 came to prominence in the early 00s, a decade before smartphones really took hold.
      Smartphones, if anything, are encouraging even wider aspect ratios (I'm typing this on a 2:1 phone). If you don't believe me, look at how many TV shows that have used a wider than 16:9 aspect ratio since the viewing of TV content on smartphones became prominent.

    • @nathanpollard1223
      @nathanpollard1223 Před rokem

      1st of all, I'm pretty sure humans have a quite wide field of view, so I don't think this argument favours 4:3.
      I think 4:3 content should still be prominent. A lot of content is shot in a not particularly interesting setting, with a lot of the time spent focusing on the face or figure of 1 person. 4:3's much better suited for content like this, as it leaves a much better amount of empty space (much less of it, but not too little that it feels claustrophobic) *&* it also frames the face or figure so much better, as it allows the subject to dominate the centre of an image that appears square.
      What 16:9 excels at is offering flexibility, which makes it useful for content in which there are limitations on how the subjects of the image can be presented, such as a nature documentary, which allows shots from various distances & angles to work well. This flexibility also accommodates a decent look for content that wants wide shots, but wants to also focus on a person, without having to have loads of space on the sides.
      On the whole, however, I don't think 16:9 looks very good (though it looks far from terrible &'s capable of looking fantastic, such as 0:24).
      Then you have 21:9, which gives vastly superior wide shots to 16:9 (though you'd probably need to go even wider for the best aspect ratio for wide shots, though this'd be impractical for screens, both big & small).
      As far as TVs are considered, 16:9's arguably the best ratio of the 3, as for those who don't mind black bars, it shows wide movies well as well as old TV shows. For those who are bothered by black bars, this's of little advantage.
      As for monitors, you make a good point in how impractical 16:9 can be, which can help explain why they're still made in 4:3 even though TVs (to my knowledge) haven't been for over a decade.
      I personally would've liked 16:9 to get thrown into the mix (I like a bit of variety), but not to overtake 4:3 to the extent that 4:3's fringe.
      Finally, at least from a commercial POV, I think 16:9 has been a success.

    I have been using GoPro for years..... literally. Started off using them to document
    my work and work sites(I have a tree care business along with still working full time
    in a machine shop), tree climbing, snowboarding, motorcycle riding/racing, mountain
    biking, shooting, etc, etc.....
    I'm not "tech smart" at all. It takes me quite a while to figure stuff out and when I do
    I don't experiment a whole lot. I only very recently started learning about the different
    aspect ratios and have been doing a bit of digging, looking, reading..... etc.
    I just watched your video and I sat here with my GoPro Hero10 Black in my hand, had
    to do a quick google search🤦🏻‍♂, and changed the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 4:3. Now I
