So, for me to channel her fragile and pure personality, I needed to change certain elements of my natural vocals to match up with her character. Uematsu: This is the first time I’ve heard this, and I’m glad she sensed exactly what we were aiming for. “No Promises to Keep” is a love song. I wanted it to exude a sweet feeling, but at the same time, evoke the complex feeling as Aerith confessed her feelings. I tried to build up the song as it climaxed, exactly as Loren described. What was the inspiration behind No Promises to Keep? Uematsu: Since it is a ballad, I wanted to make it absolutely electrifying. I was asked to make the song so that the key phrase would play in repetition, and that’s when Harry Nilsson’s “Without You” came to mind. I cried for like 2 days watching the church scene when she pushed him and the ending when this song plays and they fly away without Aerith… I was in limbo it was strange… CA is endgame ❤

This is so well put together. It's nice to find people in the comments who truly understand the Japanese romance and the storytelling at the heart of Final Fantasy VII. I have been obsessed with this game since the late 90s and it has always been Cloud and Aerith and Sephiroth's story. Not Tifa, not Zack...they are side characters to add context and subtext to the narrative and both Tifa and Zack shaped who Cloud and Aerith became and are no doubt important in their narrative but FF7 was written as a tragedy of star crossed lovers who can never fulfil their love but who together save the planet. Advent Children was made before the more modern Western obsession with Tifa began "rewriting the narrative". The more modern growth of the Tifa fans have led to the purposeful ambiguity of some of the writing in the remakes as the market is FAR too lucrative to alienate the C/T fans but even with the silly fan service (anyone who knows Cloud knows he would never talk to Tifa the way he does in remake...loooking at you ridiculous comment he makes about a dress she wore when she was 8). Furthermore the ReAL Cloud is absolutely not smooth or confident. Watching him acting out on his GS date with T in rebirth is as cringey as when he is showing off at the GS when he wins his 3D match against Dioand he is showing off on the platform...its just not Cloud. The real Cloud we see with Aerith when he stammers and gawps at her all flustered because she is so beautiful...when he stammers when he steps in her flowerbed. When he desperately wants to ask about Zack in the park but doesnt want to hear in case she still likes him and when he shyly takes her hand and interlocks his fingers. THAT is the real Cloud and Im dying to know what he whispers to her that makes her face light up. Advent Children shows a broken hearted man who can't love Tifa or truly make a family with her as he cannot forget or move past Aerith. Not only was she the first adult who has truly loved HIM rather than an idealised and fetishised version of him as a hero but she is the first adult who goes out of her way to be with him,to include him and make him feel wanted. He not only lost this amazing woman but failed to save her also. Cloud and Earth....they were always meant to be together like the worlds most powerful magnet, their opposites attract. He is shy, withdrawn, serious and a loner with a hard edge so traumatised by loss and rejection he doesnt let anyone get close whilst she is effervescent, bubbly confident and playful...so traumatised by loss and lonliness but driven on to seek companionship as a result. She is the light to his dark, the hope to his despair, Perfectly written, tragic lovers. I really hope they get a happier ending somehow.
Finally somebody said this. I say more. FFVII is a Japanese game. And in japanese games, Visual novels etc. There are many romance options but there is only one love relationship important for the plot. To all Tifa fans...You must understand specific Japanese games. For FFVII its Cloud and Aerith. Tragic love story with....maybe a hope for a happy ending. We will see.

Sorry but I just don't get it. And I am reading through the comments cause I just want to understand what Cleriths are saying that they have a "connection". I feel like people like you misunderstood Cloud completely. I feel the complete opposite of what you're telling, it makes me feel uncomfortable and cringy when he is with Aerith, as if he is coping with a girl crush he doesn't return. She is so clingy and I really don't like that she hurts Tifa intentionally by grabing his arm and telling "MINE" and "we were on a date" etc. Why does she do that? Why hurting another girl? She knows that Tifa loves him. I like her with Zack so so much better. They're both bubbly, confident and he can COPE with her teasing and can tease back. Cloud is the opposite. I feel like he needs someone who let's him be, that he can come out of his shell on his own (and not be draggen out). You save they save the world together. And who saved Cloud? More times than Aerith could ever hope to save? You say that he cannot forget and move past Aerith. If you think logically, that's really not it. You think he loved her more than his own mother? A girl he only met for a couple days? No, that is not it. He goes away from his family, Tifa and the kids, because he knows that he can't help them in his state and he couldn't handle it to lose them. He could handle losing Aerith, losing Zack. Until he finds happiness with his new family and gets scared so much that he runs away. It has nothing to do with that he can't forget his "love of his life". And I am really not saying these to trigger anyone. I just would like to understand why his crush, his childhood seeetheart is getting ignored so much. Because of Tifa it is that he is who he is now. Not because of Aerith.
I'm excited for part 3 myself and I think Aerith will help the group beat Sephiroth but it might still end up that her and Zack have to be a part of the lifestream but instead of Cloud beating himself up for not being a better hero he'll focus on doing the best he can for Tifa and his friends he still has in his life.

I think Part 3 they will pick up most of the reference from the novel The Maiden Who Travels The Planet and Advent Children. Because its either Aerith or with Zack they will support Cloud in his journey to defeat Sephiroth. And somewhere along the journey Aerith might support Tifa in rescuing and bringing back the original Cloud in the Lifestream. That's probably my theory

Ship war aside, I do think this song is about Aerith and Cloud. Is just clicked to the part where she mentions 'streets' and 'where we meet again'.. its about her and Cloud fr.. like I don't really care who Cloud ends up with, but for my point of view, I think in Part 3 weather the Highwind scene happened or not, Cloud would still choose to save Aerith. His cause of depression and guilt came from her than Zack. And if I remember correctly in every spin-off, the only person he wishes to meet is Aerith.. like its always Cloud and Aerith, they are the main Hero and Heroine in FF7.

Until I found out that why they kissed was because Tifa lied and it lead Cloud into thinking that Aerith still loves Zack. I have finished the game a week ago, trust me it won't get better any time too. Sooo true. FF7 is such a weird game, as I generally don’t connect too well with JRPG’s writing and narrative, and I also had a bumpy ride with both FF7Remake and Rebirth. But they are also one of the few games that make me cry a few times throughout the playthroughs. I remember when I finished Remake, I felt a hole in my stomach, and I missed Cloud and Aerith in sector 5 slum so much. It was the best moment in the game, waking up on the flowerbed, walking on rooftops, doing odd jobs together. And now, here we go again, beautiful moments here and there throughout the game, and in the end, a date in sector 5 slum, right back at me. Goddammit, I’m feeling so stuck and hollowed 🫠😢.
It is funny how Cloti fans are still forcing that CLOTI is canon when it is obviously not. It is the optional one. Aerith has been the default since 1997. She starts with higher points and you had to fight your way thru options to gain tifa date. Now, Aerith is still the default. She plays rosa 4/6 times and in the credits, Aerith is credited for being princess rosa. Also romance scenes of cloud that belongs in the Main scenario quest are always with aerith. Peak optional status is when you confess and kiss with cloud at the date but the ending of the game is cloud having a date with aerith, a hug with aerith, fighting the final boss with aerith, cloud holding aerith's hands before she disappears in that realm, up to the very last scene, it was centered around aerith. The blue print of ff7's story has always been the tragic story of the flower girl and her bodyguard.

Im just talking about the main canon route. we now know that AC is canon and it is not necessarily the last point chronologically. I'm on the theory that what we are playing RN is the sequel to AC or this is happening simultaneously with AC. I don't see the possibility of SE saying that this trilogy is canon and disregard the OG. why? do you think they will just say their greatest masterpiece in terms of sales is non canon? Plus they changed too many for this trilogy to be considered as a replacement. so chronologically I would say OG then AC happens then this happens. Beyond this will contain spoilers with remake and rebirth. They even went of their way to make whispers which are entities that ensures that destiny/fate happens. We boss fight it in remake and rebirth. so something drastic will happen in part 3. Whatever happens, I just hope they don't get afraid of the fans' backlash and put a clear and definitive ending this time. It is what the fans deserve.

If the lyrics weren’t enough, even though they clearly detail how and where CA met, you have the singer and composer’s words too. When A sings it at the Golden Saucer she even looks slightly to the right where C is always stood, after saying “until I met you” regardless of where the others are. There’s no way around it surely, it’s about CA. Only way it could be about ZA is if they make her character toxic by having her use her first meeting with C to make it about Z. Which would mean she’s treating C like he doesn’t exist, erasing a memory that is his, nobody else’s. It’s precisely this memory that snaps him out of Sephiroth’s mind control. And I seriously doubt they’d do that to her character when it’s harmful and illogical. She could easily of made the song about her meeting with Z in the church and whatever else, as this would be healthier and make far more sense than making it about a guy who simply reminded her of Z.

When I was a kid and this game first came out, I was ALL about Tifa. Tough girl! Kicks @$$….then as the years passed and I replayed it again in my teenage years and once more as a young adult, I realized Aerith was his peace and calm, to his inner turmoil, and pushed him to open up. Made him feel SEEN when nobody else tried. And then preceded to keep herself from fully falling in love because she knew what she was meant for, but continued to heal all those around her. A TRUE nurturer, selfless, and willingly gave her life to keep her true love and loved ones safe. THIS, made me realize. Aerith, was the one. ☝🏽

I love clerith so much. And as much as i want these two to have a happy ending- i wont be upset if cloud and tifa get the happy ending. Cloud and aerith feels like forbidden love and i feel like thats what makes it so much more powerful. I do really think theyre going to use aerith as a way to write a good story that hits hard and to lead cloud back to sanity and to tifa. Though i do hope that cloud and aerith end up together or at least there is a choice. But like i said i wouldnt be mad if both og couples got back together.

The whole point of the song: Cloud and Aerith don't need promises to be together. When Zack and Aerith and Cloud and Tifa have promises. The song was specifically written this way because they don’t have it, but others do. But the English localizers seem to have completely lost all their brains and added some kind of promise to them at the end of the game. Although in Japanese Cloud asks her, do you believe in me? And she says, I always believe in you. And the English translators added a promise instead, although the whole point is that they don’t have them. How can this nonsense be explained?

Yes like Cloud obviously loves them both in different ways. Both challenge Cloud and provide different romantic charm. And the world is ending so the 3 are kind of too busy during the game to fully realize or resolve all their feelings. Ntm with Aerith and Tifa being so close, it's no Wonder Tifa and Cloud were awkward in Advent children since they're both grieving & can't move forward.

Aerith says to Cloud " Leave Sephiroth to me, I can handle him" , and in this scene, Cloud says " I'll stop Sephiroth" and Aerith says " You promise?". Now she wants Cloud to stop Sephiroth?
I think the context was important. At the end Aerith knows Cloud will strike the finishing blow to sephiroth at the and of pt3 so he's gonna get him. When Aerith said, "leave him to me" it was earlier in the sleeping forest when Cloud was still breaking free of Sephiroth's control over him. So it was more important for cloud to "focus on himself" atm instead so he wouldn't be manipulated in killing Aerith at the alter. Also considering Aerith switched the timeline to the one she died after Cloud saved her, it's a possible theory she wanted cloud to focus on himself so he wouldn't fight seph because she needed to die, but he didn't listen lol
I think it is Jenova messing up with Cloud's fucked up mental state. He may not be talking to Aerith in that scene, but Jenova probably may have disguised itself as Aerith

To argue seriously that any date with cloud impacts the overall canon more than one another would mean including Barret, Yufie and Red into that debate too since they also get dates. And story wise, that would make Red XIII the most important date lol. Since we learn about the whispers + a theory confirmation he & Aerith could see the future in Remake + foreshadowing about Aeriths demise that further pushes Cloud to intercept sephiroth's attack.

There are three different timelines in Rebirth: Zack’s world/timeline, Remake/Rebirth world/timeline and the Original world/timeline. Zack’s world/timeline is being destroyed, where they all accepted their fate. Remake/Rebirth world/timeline where Aerith knows her fate and Cloud also knows her fate because he had visions of her death, “Seven seconds til the end. It’s time enough for. Perhaps. But what will you do with it. Let’s see. Whispers in remake try to keep the story events the same as the original timeline. Original World/timeline. In remake, Aerith knows her fate. Cloud has visions of Aerith death and knows her fate as well. After Aerith was rescued from Hojo, Aerith talks about how when whispers touches her, she loses a part of herself. Aerith says, “Follow them the yellow flowers” Whispers a very real manifestation of fate is trying to "correct" the story's events to the timeline of the original game. The whispers were destroy at the end of Remake. Aerith line at the end of Remake changed it used to be, “I miss it. The steel sky” and it changed to “This sky…I don’t like it” why doesn’t Aerith like this sky? Is it because she in the original timeline and she knows her fate. In Rebirth you first play as Zack in his timeline. Zack’s world is being destroyed. Zack saves Aerith and later Cloud and Aerith are at her house in coma and they show her white materia with her memories on the night stand. Chapter 1. Cloud tells a story about his life but he isn’t a soldier, his memory are a mixture of his and Zack’s if you played Crisis Core when Zack goes to Nibelheim you would understand. Aerith and Red XIII. Aerith shows Red XIII that her white materia has lost it memory and she mentions she had them back in Midgar (think of her white materia in Zack’s world) Red XIII tells Aerith, materia is infused with knowledge and memories. Aerith tells Red the whispers stole her memories. Aerith tells Cloud on the beach, that he will love her future self, she says, “Can’t say when you’ll meet, but trust me, you’ll love her.” Loveless play, when Varvados interrupt the kiss, while they fight, pay attention to what Rosa does to Alphreid sword, it glows green and has a green mist coming from it, and you can see all the swords, can be the swords be whispers in Aerith death scene? The white whispers are with her before her death. Aerith death scene: Sephiroth has his own black whispers who also wants the events to stay the same as the original game. Original timeline. Aerith dies you can see Cloud muttering as he holds Aerith’s body. Remake/Rebirth timeline. Cloud saves Aerith, look at his sword it glows green, you can see a green mist coming from his sword like Rosa did to Alphreid sword in the Loveless play. Slow down the death scene, look at Cloud’s sword and the green mist coming off his sword. Original timeline, you can see Tifa kneeling beside Aerith body. As Cloud approaches Aerith, the white whispers surround her, Cloud walks through them, Tifa, Barret, Yuffie and Red disappears because he is now in the Remake/Rebirth timeline where Aerith lives. Sephiroth shows Cloud the multiverse. Cloud and Aerith fight Sephiroth. Sephiroth tells Aerith, “I must admit, I underestimated you” he asks Cloud, “What do you make of this? Is any of it real? Or is just all a fever dream?” Cloud tells Sephiroth, “Don’t even bother. That shit won’t work on me--not anymore” Zack’s world/timeline. Zack’s world is about the explode, he says goodbye, but Aerith saves him with the white whispers. Zack is in a different timeline, which timeline is he in now, Remake/Rebith, why do I think this? Because Zack died in the original game. Cloud, Red XIII, Yuffie, Barret and Tifa are all in the original timeline. Why can Cloud and Zack travel? When Hojo experience on Cloud and Zack he injected them with Jenova cells and mako. Loveless play: It reminds me of Kingdom Hearts, where Cloud leaves Aerith to look for Sephiroth and promises Aerith he will come back to her, in the end credits of KH, Cloud reunites with Aerith. Need more clues. Rosa is the name of the character in the Loveless play, ROSA = SORA, maybe a hint to the ending of game 3 where Cloud and Aerith will reunite, like they did in the KH ending credits. I do see a lot of people comparing Rebirth to Kingdom Hearts. No Promises Awaits at the Journey’s End, No Promises to keep starts to play at the end of the game and the ending version is different from the one Aerith sings on stage they added more lines, hinting that Cloud and Aerith will reunite. Will Zack and Aerith reunite? Yes but as friends because Marlene told Zack how Aerith feels about Cloud and it’s clear Aerith fell in love with Cloud and she confesses her feelings to him at their spot, Cloud wants to make sure Aerith is over Zack before he shows his feelings for her. Which is why he asked Tifa what she thinks and even asked Aerith herself. I hope Cissnei and Zack reunites, I hope he returns to Gongaga to let his parents know he is okay. Zack asked Cissnei to watch over his parents and she has, all these years waiting for him to return, because she loves Zack. Kitase confirmed the third game isn’t going to be the same as AC. "The overall storyline, the developments, will not go wildly out in a way that will not add up to Advent Children in the end, I don't think anyone wanted that; that's not what we're looking to create here.”
Here we go again , it is not about Tifa, the whole final fantasy is about Cloud and Aerith, Cloud never moved on from loving Aerith, and there is already another Aerith alive anyway, no one knows how part 3 will go, because of the other timelines.
The devs already said at the beginning of the trilogy’s development, that the “axis” of the original game’s story wouldn’t change, and in interviews that took place since then, they’ve said that the axis of the original game’s story is Cloud, Aerith, and Sephiroth. Other characters get their time to shine, but the story at its core is about those three characters, whereas with all the other characters you could remove or reduce their roles and it wouldn’t change that much in terms of the big picture story. All this isn't about Tifa at all.
@@sharynmorgan944 I'm all for Clerith and hate to break it to you but Aerith isn't "alive" anymore. It's clear from the ending that she's now part of the lifestream. This is why only Cloud can see her and why Red XII can sense her in the ending. It's also backed up by how Cloud and Aerith disappear at the end of the final Sephiroth fight, Cloud fades out surrounded by whispers, returning to his timeline. Whilst Aerith disperses with the green lifestream bubbles. Also in the ending, there's a section you see with two weapons swimming in the lifestream surrounded by black whispers and they suddenly get "powered up", further indicating that Aerith is now part of the lifestream in the fight against Sephiroth.
Even though i love Aerith and want her to be happy at the end, i still in my heart believe that Aerith should be with Zack. I want to see him embrace and cherish her. I wish Square Enix return this couple. I am waiting for part 3. Please Square please
I understand that people like Zack and Aerith because of CC, but FFVII has always had AerithxCloud as its central characters, their relationship is too iconic to be broken, I doubt Square Enix will separate the two, it's easier to leave everything open.

Since Zack dies first *she* finds him. “Fate and destiny are no guarantee” Cloud is literally fighting destiny/ whispers. “Life passing me by, not thinking how the years have flown Until I met you” She waited in limbo for Zack for 4 years until Cloud came and gave her another purpose. This game literally ends with Cloud making a promise to Aerith as the song “No promises to keep” starts playing. Not exactly subtle. Also as much as I love Zack, it's not his game. He has so little to do with the story since CC. Seph, Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith are our main characters. Obviously Zack and cloud have some similarities so you can draw parallels, but that's about it.

This song represents Aerith's love for Cloud. Unfortunately, Cloud was always half-hearted and didn't know how to face this love when Alice was alive; However, it is probably difficult for Cloud to convince himself to admit that he is in love with a woman other than Tifa. After all, Cloud left his hometown to join the Shinra Army in order to win Tifa's heart.
Nojima was back peddling after Cloti fans started harassing him for some of the previous comments he made (he said he wasn't sure if Tifa and Cloud would work out together). Nobuo Uematsu said something different about the song, and even the singer said she needed to learn about Cloud and Aeirth's relationship before singing the song. Cloud is the only character she met on a cobblestone street, it's right there in the lyrics if you don't have your head up your ass. Both are canon and you can ship whomever you want, but the lyrics of Hollow and NPTK are pretty clear if you understand the game and a lot of the underlying themes at play.

Yeah, no. Aerith loves Cloud entirely. Marlene says it, Zack knows it. Aerith says it on the GS date and withholds her confession to Cloud in the dream date to spare him heartbreak. Her main focus has been protecting Cloud especially because of her love for him. How is that not obvious? She could literally be with Zack in that other world, but she chooses not to.

Loren: I wanted to get to know Aerith well, and I also wanted to depict her relationship with Cloud. So, for me to channel her fragile and pure personality, I needed to change certain elements of my natural vocals to match up with her character.
Uematsu: This is the first time I’ve heard this, and I’m glad she sensed exactly what we were aiming for. “No Promises to Keep” is a love song. I wanted it to exude a sweet feeling, but at the same time, evoke the complex feeling as Aerith confessed her feelings. I tried to build up the song as it climaxed, exactly as Loren described.
What was the inspiration behind No Promises to Keep?
Uematsu: Since it is a ballad, I wanted to make it absolutely electrifying. I was asked to make the song so that the key phrase would play in repetition, and that’s when Harry Nilsson’s “Without You” came to mind. I took inspiration from it and decided to repeat a key phrase in the chorus.

This is so well put together. It's nice to find people in the comments who truly understand the Japanese romance and the storytelling at the heart of Final Fantasy VII. I have been obsessed with this game since the late 90s and it has always been Cloud and Aerith and Sephiroth's story. Not Tifa, not Zack...they are side characters to add context and subtext to the narrative and both Tifa and Zack shaped who Cloud and Aerith became and are no doubt important in their narrative but FF7 was written as a tragedy of star crossed lovers who can never fulfil their love but who together save the planet. Advent Children was made before the more modern Western obsession with Tifa began "rewriting the narrative". The more modern growth of the Tifa fans have led to the purposeful ambiguity of some of the writing in the remakes as the market is FAR too lucrative to alienate the C/T fans but even with the silly fan service (anyone who knows Cloud knows he would never talk to Tifa the way he does in remake...loooking at you ridiculous comment he makes about a dress she wore when she was 8). Furthermore the ReAL Cloud is absolutely not smooth or confident. Watching him acting out on his GS date with T in rebirth is as cringey as when he is showing off at the GS when he wins his 3D match against Dioand he is showing off on the platform...its just not Cloud. The real Cloud we see with Aerith when he stammers and gawps at her all flustered because she is so beautiful...when he stammers when he steps in her flowerbed. When he desperately wants to ask about Zack in the park but doesnt want to hear in case she still likes him and when he shyly takes her hand and interlocks his fingers. THAT is the real Cloud and Im dying to know what he whispers to her that makes her face light up.
Advent Children shows a broken hearted man who can't love Tifa or truly make a family with her as he cannot forget or move past Aerith. Not only was she the first adult who has truly loved HIM rather than an idealised and fetishised version of him as a hero but she is the first adult who goes out of her way to be with him,to include him and make him feel wanted. He not only lost this amazing woman but failed to save her also.
Cloud and Earth....they were always meant to be together like the worlds most powerful magnet, their opposites attract. Sorry but I just don't get it. And I am reading through the comments cause I just want to understand what Cleriths are saying that they have a "connection". I feel like people like you misunderstood Cloud completely. I feel the complete opposite of what you're telling, it makes me feel uncomfortable and cringy when he is with Aerith, as if he is coping with a girl crush he doesn't return. She is so clingy and I really don't like that she hurts Tifa intentionally by grabing his arm and telling "MINE" and "we were on a date" etc. Why does she do that? Why hurting another girl? I'm excited for part 3 myself and I think Aerith will help the group beat Sephiroth but it might still end up that her and Zack have to be a part of the lifestream but instead of Cloud beating himself up for not being a better hero he'll focus on doing the best he can for Tifa and his friends he still has in his life.

I think Part 3 they will pick up most of the reference from the novel The Maiden Who Travels The Planet and Advent Children. Because its either Aerith or with Zack they will support Cloud in his journey to defeat Sephiroth. And somewhere along the journey Aerith might support Tifa in rescuing and bringing back the original Cloud in the Lifestream. That's probably my theory

Is just clicked to the part where she mentions 'streets' and 'where we meet again'.. its about her and Cloud fr.. like I don't really care who Cloud ends up with, but for my point of view, I think in Part 3 weather the Highwind scene happened or not, Cloud would still choose to save Aerith. His cause of depression and guilt came from her than Zack. And if I remember correctly in every spin-off, the only person he wishes to meet is Aerith.. like its always Cloud and Aerith, they are the main Hero and Heroine in FF7.

Sooo true. FF7 is such a weird game, as I generally don’t connect too well with JRPG’s writing and narrative, and I also had a bumpy ride with both FF7Remake and Rebirth. But they are also one of the few games that make me cry a few times throughout the playthroughs. I remember when I finished Remake, I felt a hole in my stomach, and I missed Cloud and Aerith in sector 5 slum so much. It was the best moment in the game, waking up on the flowerbed, walking on rooftops, doing odd jobs together. And now, here we go again, beautiful moments here and there throughout the game, and in the end, a date in sector 5 slum, right back at me. Goddammit, I’m feeling so stuck and hollowed 🫠😢.

It is funny how Cloti fans are still forcing that CLOTI is canon when it is obviously not. It is the optional one.
Aerith has been the default since 1997. She starts with higher points and you had to fight your way thru options to gain tifa date.
Now, Aerith is still the default. She plays rosa 4/6 times and in the credits, Aerith is credited for being princess rosa.
Also romance scenes of cloud that belongs in the Main scenario quest are always with aerith.
Peak optional status is when you confess and kiss with cloud at the date but the ending of the game is cloud having a date with aerith,
a hug with aerith, fighting the final boss with aerith, cloud holding aerith's hands before she disappears in that realm, up to the very last scene, it was centered around aerith.
The blue print of ff7's story has always been the tragic story of the flower girl and her bodyguard.
Cloud Tifa are canon on the last part of the game.
If you play og game you know they will got moments there, more intimate than Cloud Aerith has.

I’ve just read the interview that Loren and Uematsu did regarding the song. I’ll mention the key parts that settle who and what it’s about.
Uematsu: “No Promises to Keep” “is a love song. I wanted it to exude a sweet feeling, but at the same time, evoke the complex feeling as Aerith confessed her feelings. I tried to build up the song as it climaxed, exactly as Loren described.” The lyrics make it clear it’s about one person, not multiple.
Loren: “I wanted to get to know Aerith well, and I also wanted to depict her relationship with Cloud. So, for me to channel her fragile and pure personality, I needed to change certain elements of my natural vocals to match up with her character.” No mention of Z or CC.
If the lyrics weren’t enough, even though they clearly detail how and where CA met, you have the singer and composer’s words too.
When A sings it at the Golden Saucer she even looks slightly to the right where C is always stood, after saying “until I met you” regardless of where the others are. There’s no way around it surely, it’s about CA. Only way it could be about ZA is if they make her character toxic by having her use her first meeting with C to make it about Z. Which would mean she’s treating C like he doesn’t exist, erasing a memory that is his, nobody else’s. It’s precisely this memory that snaps him out of Sephiroth’s mind control. And I seriously doubt they’d do that to her character when it’s harmful and illogical. She could easily of made the song about her meeting with Z in the church and whatever else, as this would be healthier and make far more sense than making it about a guy who simply reminded her of Z.
also in the date with barret, he shove clouds who is still clueless about the lyrics, like saying, take a hint,or go for it. and cloud almost declare to aerith in the canyon when they are taking pictures, but hesitates

But yeah, the lyrics clearly referencing how and where CA met, the composer and singers words, and Aerith herself looking at Cloud after saying “until I met you” prove it can only be about them. For it to be about ZA things have to be toxic and illogical, so for these reasons, I’ve no doubt that’s not the case.

You have the lyrics that mention cobblestone, our street, and struggling against crowds. All these relate to how and where CA met. ZA met in the church, not on a street, nor were crowds a hindrance before they met. You have Aerith looking at Cloud slightly during the song no matter what. And finally, it wouldn’t make sense for Aerith to sing about her and Cloud if it was actually about Zack, as this would be harmful and nonsensical. The healthy and realistic outcome would be her just making it about ZA, yet she doesn’t.

When I was a kid and this game first came out, I was ALL about Tifa. Tough girl! Kicks @$$….then as the years passed and I replayed it again in my teenage years and once more as a young adult, I realized Aerith was his peace and calm, to his inner turmoil, and pushed him to open up. Made him feel SEEN when nobody else tried. And then preceded to keep herself from fully falling in love because she knew what she was meant for, but continued to heal all those around her. A TRUE nurturer, selfless, and willingly gave her life to keep her true love and loved ones safe. THIS, made me realize. Aerith, was the one. ☝🏽

I love clerith so much. And as much as i want these two to have a happy ending- i wont be upset if cloud and tifa get the happy ending. Cloud and aerith feels like forbidden love and i feel like thats what makes it so much more powerful. I do really think theyre going to use aerith as a way to write a good story that hits hard and to lead cloud back to sanity and to tifa. Though i do hope that cloud and aerith end up together or at least there is a choice. But like i said i wouldnt be mad if both og couples got back together.

The whole point of the song: Cloud and Aerith don't need promises to be together. When Zack and Aerith and Cloud and Tifa have promises. The song was specifically written this way because they don’t have it, but others do. But the English localizers seem to have completely lost all their brains and added some kind of promise to them at the end of the game. Although in Japanese Cloud asks her, do you believe in me? And she says, I always believe in you. And the English translators added a promise instead, although the whole point is that they don’t have them. How can this nonsense be explained?

Can one comment section be spared of toxic shippers? This song is clearly about Cloud and Aerith, at the same time the writers also believe in the Tifa ship too. The writer for the original game made it a point to say how important Tifa is. He loved both. Get over it.

This song confirms what I've thought my whole life! Although Cloud ends up with Tifa, his true love has always been AERITH!
Aerith says to Cloud " Leave Sephiroth to me, I can handle him" , and in this scene, Cloud says " I'll stop Sephiroth" and Aerith says " You promise?". Now she wants Cloud to stop Sephiroth?
I think the context was important. At the end Aerith knows Cloud will strike the finishing blow to sephiroth at the and of pt3 so he's gonna get him.
When Aerith said, "leave him to me" it was earlier in the sleeping forest when Cloud was still breaking free of Sephiroth's control over him. So it was more important for cloud to "focus on himself" atm instead so he wouldn't be manipulated in killing Aerith at the alter.
Also considering Aerith switched the timeline to the one she died after Cloud saved her, it's a possible theory she wanted cloud to focus on himself so he wouldn't fight seph because she needed to die, but he didn't listen lol
I think it is Jenova messing up with Cloud's fucked up mental state. He may not be talking to Aerith in that scene, but Jenova probably may have disguised itself as Aerith

To argue seriously that any date with cloud impacts the overall canon more than one another would mean including Barret, Yufie and Red into that debate too since they also get dates.
And story wise, that would make Red XIII the most important date lol. Since we learn about the whispers + a theory confirmation he & Aerith could see the future in Remake + foreshadowing about Aeriths demise that further pushes Cloud to intercept sephiroth's attack.

There are three different timelines in Rebirth: Zack’s world/timeline, Remake/Rebirth world/timeline and the Original world/timeline.
Zack’s world/timeline is being destroyed, where they all accepted their fate. Remake/Rebirth world/timeline where Aerith knows her fate and Cloud also knows her fate because he had visions of her death, “Seven seconds til the end. It’s time enough for. Perhaps. But what will you do with it. Let’s see. Whispers in remake try to keep the story events the same as the original timeline. Original World/timeline.
In remake, Aerith knows her fate. Cloud has visions of Aerith death and knows her fate as well. After Aerith was rescued from Hojo, Aerith talks about how when whispers touches her, she loses a part of herself. Aerith says, “Follow them the yellow flowers” Whispers a very real manifestation of fate is trying to "correct" the story's events to the timeline of the original game. The whispers were destroy at the end of Remake. Aerith line at the end of Remake changed it used to be, “I miss it. The steel sky” and it changed to “This sky…I don’t like it” why doesn’t Aerith like this sky? Is it because she in the original timeline and she knows her fate.
In Rebirth you first play as Zack in his timeline. Zack’s world is being destroyed. Zack saves Aerith and later Cloud and Aerith are at her house in coma and they show her white materia with her memories on the night stand.
Chapter 1. Cloud tells a story about his life but he isn’t a soldier, his memory are a mixture of his and Zack’s if you played Crisis Core when Zack goes to Nibelheim you would understand.
Aerith and Red XIII. Aerith shows Red XIII that her white materia has lost it memory and she mentions she had them back in Midgar (think of her white materia in Zack’s world) Red XIII tells Aerith, materia is infused with knowledge and memories. Aerith tells Red the whispers stole her memories.
Aerith tells Cloud on the beach, that he will love her future self, she says, “Can’t say when you’ll meet, but trust me, you’ll love her.”
Loveless play, when Varvados interrupt the kiss, while they fight, pay attention to what Rosa does to Alphreid sword, it glows green and has a green mist coming from it, and you can see all the swords, can be the swords be whispers in Aerith death scene? After Varvados loses the fight, pay attention to what he says, “What awaits you at the Journey’s end, I wonder? Will the goddess grant you Her blessings? (Game three, will the holy work?) Or will the flames of vengeance consume you? (Game three, will Sephiroth cast the meteor and destroy the world, like Zack’s world is being destroyed?) No Promises Awaits at the Journey’s End.
Aerith writes and sings “No Promises to Keep” it’s love song, a message to Cloud. How to find her at “our place”
Cloud and Aerith gold saucer date, Aerith tells Cloud she is having a hard time finding him.
In Aerith’s “my dream” she goes to Cloud in Zack’s timeline, Aerith and Cloud go for a walk in sector five and “No Promises to Keep” plays in the background. Cloud gives Aerith a flower pin. Aerith hears Sephiroth, “So this is where you’ve been hiding. In a world that accepted its fate” Cloud and Aerith goes to the church referred to as “our spot” Aerith gives Cloud her white materia with the memory and she pushes him into the portal.
Sleepy forest, Original world/timeline. Aerith urges Cloud to find himself the one she’s been looking for…the real him. She takes her white materia from Cloud, the one with the memory and gives Cloud her empty one. Why did she give him her empty one? Red XIII did say materia is infused with memories, does she want Cloud to infuse his memory of Sephiroth like in AC, “Stay in my memories where you belong?” Notice as Aerith walks away the white whispers stop him and Aerith disappears back to the Remake/Rebirth timeline where she knows her fate. The white whispers are with her before her death.
Aerith death scene:
Sephiroth has his own black whispers who also wants the events to stay the same as the original game.
Original timeline. Aerith dies you can see Cloud muttering as he holds Aerith’s body.
Remake/Rebirth timeline. Cloud saves Aerith, look at his sword it glows green, you can see a green mist coming from his sword like Rosa did to Alphreid sword in the Loveless play. Slow down the death scene, look at Cloud’s sword and the green mist coming off his sword.
Original timeline, you can see Tifa kneeling beside Aerith body. As Cloud approaches Aerith, the white whispers surround her, Cloud walks through them, Tifa, Barret, Yuffie and Red disappears because he is now in the Remake/Rebirth timeline where Aerith lives.
Sephiroth shows Cloud the multiverse.
Cloud and Aerith fight Sephiroth. Sephiroth tells Aerith, “I must admit, I underestimated you” he asks Cloud, “What do you make of this? Is any of it real? Or is just all a fever dream?” Cloud tells Sephiroth, “Don’t even bother. That shit won’t work on me--not anymore”
Zack’s world/timeline. Zack’s world is about the explode, he says goodbye, but Aerith saves him with the white whispers. Zack is in a different timeline, which timeline is he in now, Remake/Rebith, why do I think this? Because Zack died in the original game.
Cloud, Red XIII, Yuffie, Barret and Tifa are all in the original timeline.
Why can Cloud and Zack travel? When Hojo experience on Cloud and Zack he injected them with Jenova cells and mako.
Loveless play: It reminds me of Kingdom Hearts, where Cloud leaves Aerith to look for Sephiroth and promises Aerith he will come back to her, in the end credits of KH, Cloud reunites with Aerith. Need more clues. Rosa is the name of the character in the Loveless play, ROSA = SORA, maybe a hint to the ending of game 3 where Cloud and Aerith will reunite, like they did in the KH ending credits. I do see a lot of people comparing Rebirth to Kingdom Hearts.
No Promises Awaits at the Journey’s End, No Promises to keep starts to play at the end of the game and the ending version is different from the one Aerith sings on stage they added more lines, hinting that Cloud and Aerith will reunite.
Will Zack and Aerith reunite? Yes but as friends because Marlene told Zack how Aerith feels about Cloud and it’s clear Aerith fell in love with Cloud and she confesses her feelings to him at their spot, Cloud wants to make sure Aerith is over Zack before he shows his feelings for her. Which is why he asked Tifa what she thinks and even asked Aerith herself.
I hope Cissnei and Zack reunites, I hope he returns to Gongaga to let his parents know he is okay. Zack asked Cissnei to watch over his parents and she has, all these years waiting for him to return, because she loves Zack.
Kitase confirmed the third game isn’t going to be the same as AC. "The overall storyline, the developments, will not go wildly out in a way that will not add up to Advent Children in the end, I don't think anyone wanted that; that's not what we're looking to create here.”
Here we go again , it is not about Tifa, the whole final fantasy is about Cloud and Aerith, Cloud never moved on from loving Aerith, and there is already another Aerith alive anyway, no one knows how part 3 will go, because of the other timelines.

The devs already said at the beginning of the trilogy’s development, that the “axis” of the original game’s story wouldn’t change, and in interviews that took place since then, they’ve said that the axis of the original game’s story is Cloud, Aerith, and Sephiroth. Other characters get their time to shine, but the story at its core is about those three characters, whereas with all the other characters you could remove or reduce their roles and it wouldn’t change that much in terms of the big picture story.
All this isn't about Tifa at all.
@@sharynmorgan944 I'm all for Clerith and hate to break it to you but Aerith isn't "alive" anymore. It's clear from the ending that she's now part of the lifestream. This is why only Cloud can see her and why Red XII can sense her in the ending. It's also backed up by how Cloud and Aerith disappear at the end of the final Sephiroth fight, Cloud fades out surrounded by whispers, returning to his timeline. Whilst Aerith disperses with the green lifestream bubbles. Also in the ending, there's a section you see with two weapons swimming in the lifestream surrounded by black whispers and they suddenly get "powered up", further indicating that Aerith is now part of the lifestream in the fight against Sephiroth.

Also as much as I love Zack, it's not his game. He has so little to do with the story since CC. Seph, Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith are our main characters.

So many uninformed comments here. Aerith wrote this song for everyone she knows and met. This is confirmed by the devs in the recent FF7 Ultimania.
Nojima was back peddling after Cloti fans started harassing him for some of the previous comments he made (he said he wasn't sure if Tifa and Cloud would work out together). Nobuo Uematsu said something different about the song, and even the singer said she needed to learn about Cloud and Aeirth's relationship before singing the song.
Cloud is the only character she met on a cobblestone street, it's right there in the lyrics if you don't have your head up your ass.
Both are canon and you can ship whomever you want, but the lyrics of Hollow and NPTK are pretty clear if you understand the game and a lot of the underlying themes at play.
