Although this shower floor I used the Schluter Kerdi system with the proprietary drain grate assembly, I take the same approach to install any shower floor. The main difference is the drain where in other systems the drain grate would already be in place and it would be a simple matter of just cutting around it. In most cases I will simply dry lay the whole shower floor, cutting all the pieces in, when that is done I will pick up one or two rows and start to install with thinset. I will always leave some of the loose floor in place to leave a reference to be able to install the mosaic tile exactly where it needs to go. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. Ohhhh it feels good to be watching quality craftsmanship again. Still have a few more videos to catch up on. Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Great work Sal ! thank you for your tutorials, much appreciated!
awesome job as always Sal
What a pleasure to watch these videos - totally amazed at the attention to detail and craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks.
Master! You always do The Best Work Ever! As always , I watch from afar but follow you for years. ( one of your students) I'm currently doing the same work myself I'll keep making everyone proud. ( customer and family).
Thanks for watching my videos.
Looks clean, nice work man.
So clearly you like doing the floor first then walls. Makes my decision much easier thanks
Most of the time.
I usually tend to do the floors first for the shower specially if im doing mosaico . Because i can give it a better finish with the pitch o. The wall tile
As a younger installer I appreciate the time taken to show quality practices.
The master......thanks for yet another great vid
😊👍
A master class
Thank you
You're a talented man.
😊👍
That's going to be a nice shower. Hopefully we get to see it completed.
A trick: watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using it for watching loads of movies lately.
@Samuel Jack Yup, I've been watching on Flixzone for years myself =)
this was so helpful
Thanks, glad it helped
Hi Sal, Awesome videos. I have small 1 1/4" square ceramic tiles for my shower wall. They are not affixed to a mesh. Should I lay them individually on the wall or should I install them on a fiberglass mesh first? Any other thoughts on how to do this? Thanks!
Hi Sal great videos, very informative on installing a mosaic octagon tiles on a schluter system pan. I"m getting ready to install 2" x 1/4"Thick mosaics on by schluter system pan. I plan to use a 1/4 x 1/4" trowel. Do you suggest to use a different size trowel, as I want to ensure that I don't have excess mortar come through the grout lines. Your suggestion would be appreciated. Regards: Doug Volkart
Can u pour a shower pan straight to the subflooring and use kurdi for waterproofing the pan? Just seen that done today
For 3 inch hex, that isn't perfectly flat on back side, would you use 1/4 x1/4 square notch trowel? On ditra heat
Nice job! Will do same with my basement shower
The planning and layout phase as shown here is what is missing in many other CZcams tile videos. Rarely have I seen an effort to center the mosaic on the drain like Sal does. Drives me crazy when supposed pros let their tiles fall randomly around the drain.
Thanks for watching my video.
Did you plan on installing silicone at corners?
Does any1 know what size trowel was used? About to put very similar hexagon mesh floor tile in the shower.
This reply is too late for you, but it looks like a Ditra trowel - 11/64 x 11/64 square notch. Hope your shower came out good!
@ducbox572 It is too late but regardless, thank you for responding. And yes It came out too beautiful. Tnks
Nice work - very helpful. Grout or caulking where the wall tile meets the floor tile ? Thank You
Silicone
Would you do the same prelaying and cutting technique with a 30sqft bathroom floor with 4" mosaic hexagon tiles?
No, I would probably figure out my layout, cut in a couple of rows then work off that.
Awesome work! Noob question...for jobs that are larger in square footage which would require more than one bag of mortar mix will you mix an entire bag at once or in batches due to limited open time? I installed a tub/shower with mapei ultraflex LFT and had to throw out about 20#'s of mixed mortar due to it setting up so fast. Thank you for sharing!
As long as you mix the mortar with the correct ratio of water, then it will be fine. If I am doing large areas where I go through mortar quickly, I mix a whole bag at a time, if I am doing more detailed work where the mortar will sit for longer periods of time, I will mix half a bag at a time with half the water.
I have the same grate. There are small tabs on the lateral adjustment ring. Do they go towards the floor drain or the grate?? Thank you. Love your videos!!
does not matter.
In this video you mentioned to center the drain where as in your other video you used some play you had to offset the drain in order to get even pieces around it. It’s there a preferred way you do it or just depends how the process goes?
Every shower floor is different, go with what works best.
Do you have any videos on how you do the sand and cement floor. ?
Also if you were to install a wet room without a curb would you used tray rather than mud so the floor is flat throughout
Thanks for the speedy replies also do you use a rapid set cement thin set or normal set?
@@toddstevenson3936 Just the regular type'
Hey Sal. Happy Holidays. I have the same make tiles Onix. They are 1x1 black glass mosaic. Do you recommend the same snap cutter? If you do what is the make of it. Thanks
This in combination with the mosaic mat works really well.

How do you know what to charge client. if you’re going over work that was damage from the previous contractor that you were fixing for them? It’s tough to charge A certain amount. When they already lost so much money?
Never go over prep work you did not do, and charge what it is worth, you feel bad for the customer, but you fix it by giving them the best possible job at a fair price.
What did you use for thinset sal
Schluter AllSet
What about how to do the slope so the water goes to the drain?

Sal you have such good advice but the shaky camera is killing me.
I didn't know you did your floorsfirst I'm always concerned about scratching them and then getting that bottom cut in on the walls
In this case it's better to do floor first because tiles are very small, and cutting them precisely against wall tiles would be a lot of unnecessary work.
I do my floors last so I don't have to worry about getting them dirty or damaging them. I start my walls on a ledger one or two courses up from floor and fill in after floor is done. Either way works
Just cover them up.

What size trowel on this Sal?
Looks like a Ditra trowel. I use the same for this type. Works well in my experience
Gar Mar is correct that was a Ditra trowel.
I'm concerned about this system not having weep holes. If water get under tile, how will it drain??
It is a sealed system, it does not need weep holes.
That kerdi isn't water tho? Don't you have to roll some water proof membrane on it ?
It is waterproof when installed according to directions.
