Hey Vic! I grabbed one of these cameras and have found that it depletes the battery after about 45 minutes - while plugged into USB for the streaming. It seems that the amount of charge it's getting from the computer is not enough to sustain the continued use. Any tips?

just came here to say i almost returned my ZV-1 just now after five days of use because it wouldn't connect to Imaging Edge anymore. I had no idea what the Usb reset app was i thought it was a virus and i just haven't had time to wipe my computer. I ended up doing a full reset of the camera, total uninstall/ reinstall of the imaging edge suite, and a PC reset and its back to normal. Thank you for pulling me out of a three hour funk of troubleshooting Vic.

I'm having a similar problem. I can't seem to install the Imaging Edge software at all. It's always telling me to uninstall then install again. And also that is has stopped prematurely due to errors. I have an anti virus and turned it off and tried all sorts of other ways but I don't know what else to do. Can someone please help? :(

I watched this video when I first got my ZV1. It really helped. Fast forward some months & I changed some settings to use the camera with my smart phone. Last night, I needed to quickly start a livestream. Got the Mass Storage message with literally 3 minutes before the time to go live. Mind was BLANK about which settings to adjust! Can you feel the stress? Found your video and was able to go live ON TIME last night!

I only have a Mac, but it can dual boot into Windows, so I should be able to put the Sony software on there. I’ll also need to add OBS Studio or similar to the (small) PC partition.
Thanks for this. I bought the ZV1 because of the promise of this software but it looks to me like some pretty ugly workarounds are needed to get it working. I'll give it a try.
Hey Pete, what ugly workarounds? It's a glorified driver that you have to install and that's about it....let me know how you get on
@@VicBarry The program that you have to use if the software breaks your camera would be one - OK to be fair, that's the only one - but it looks ugly. I'm trying it now.
@@VicBarry And indeed Vic - seeing is believing. You've highlightwd some good things to watch out for (auto turn off for example and the potential to crash) but leaving those one side, this was about as simple as you say. The software is a driver. My video conferencing software (MS Teams) recognised the camara immediately and now my ugly mug can be shared in glorious detail with a cool out of focus background.

Hi Barry, great video, as all of your ZV-1 videos. Subscribed. One question regarding latency / lag time... I tested the setting described here with USB only and the latency is really heavy. Would the Black Magic ATEM Mini and Elgato CamLink transmit latency-free video in 4k from the ZV-1, or would there be some latency involved as well? Thanks! Andreas
Hey there, really? You've tried program auto? Have you tried manual? Didn't really experience that much noticeable latency to be honest. The Camlink and the Atem Mini will have lower latency alright, we're talking around 10 milliseconds or thereabouts. How bad was the latency via USB?

Really useful video, just got the ZV-1 and have no clue how to use it optimally lol. All I MAJORLY want from it is being used as a top class webcam to record talking head videos.
Btw what is the mount you have in the background that makes the ZV-1 mount to the back of your monitor it looks awesome and very handy for me too.

For that reason do you think I should use the Camera all by itself, with an SD card and then transfer the video over and edit, or should I use a capture card style and just have it acting as a really high quality webcam for my PC that I can record videos with too?

Hey Vic! Great video and new subscriber here! Question about livestreaming with the Sony ZV1, I did it and it looked AMAZING but the camera kept shutting off. Any reason for this? I know it sounds silly but I figured the camera would stay charged because it's plugged into my laptop. Is this not the case if the battery is low to begin with?
Hey Melissa, thank you 🙏 the issue with the laptop is that most laptops can’t deliver enough voltage to the camera to keep it powered for long periods of time ☹️
The only work around as such is to use a dummy battery which will keep it powered for a seriously long time. There’s a video on my channel that explains this (will it melt is in the thumbnail) let me know if you can’t find it but it’ll make things clear 🙏

Any idea why the ZV1 keeps cutting the recorded the video files? In my case around each 10 min of footage.

The Logitech webcam setup with it being built in as a permanent cam with highest quality possible in OBS/with most computer applications I find to be EXTREMELY useful! If I can get that setup with the ZV-1 it's a no brainer for me to do so I feel.

It really depends on what you're doing! The webcam style will make a big difference on how it all looks. It's a nice to have I think vs an actual need to have. Dunno if that makes sense?

Hi Vic! I absolutely LOVE your content on this camera, thank you so much for creating such valuable information here. I have a sticking point on this subject I was going you might have an answer for, I hope you don't mind me asking here... I teach yoga online, and seemingly no matter what setting I try, the focus either stutters as I move around (especially lying down in the bottom of the frame) or on manual focus mode it just goes fuzzy all the time and doesn't refocus, again especially on the floor or when there's a lot of window light coming in. Losing my mind trying to sort it out. Any ideas what setting would sort this so it stays in focus no matter where I am in the frame? I'm using the wide angle lens you recommend also. Many many thanks!!!
Hi Daniella, manual focus is the best way to go especially if there’s lots of light change etc which can cause auto focus issues. Manual focus kicks off the camera but it’s only going to focus on a specific area that you dial in. So if you move outside of that it’s gonna get blurry.
What I’d suggest is out the camera in manual mode and make sure the aperture is set to f11 or there abouts. Dial in your shutter speed and iso and see how that works. The higher the aperture (f11) then the less depth of field which mean more things will be in focus but you’re still limited to a particular space if that makes sense

I actually tried this yesterday. New fresh battery and the camera only lasted 15 minutes before it died. Looked friggin fantastic though! But for my longer used I’ll definitely go hdmi our so I can still charge.
Hey there, that's strange. Currently ,I'm 30 minutes into a test and the camera battery hasn't moved. Doubled check that your USB port in the computer is carrying power.
I have a similar issue. Was the battery you used completely charged up. I started with a battery that was not at 100%. I now have a fresh battery in and will see how long it last.

I mean is this really a practical way to use with OBS for video recording/streaming? or do you recommended the Cam Link? I know you already recommended the cam link for having the best quality, but I mean in terms of FPS, does the USB and Imaging Edge software approach work, or do we lagging?
Hey Khashayar, thank you. Make sure the camera is on program auto for streaming. You “should” see no frame drops then.

Most recent video will show a livestream setup. Thank you. But other than that there is nothing I’ve done in OBS besides adding it as a camera. You think a tutorial specifically on obs would be helpful?

Great video! My capture card does not have a USB input however, and I cannot actually find one that does. It only has a HDMI input. Does this mean I need to get a micro HDMI to HDMI cable and use the same process?
You don’t need a capture card for the usb. You can just plug the usb direct into the computer. Or alternatively use a capture card with a hdmi

I have been using the ZV1 for Facebook live and zoom meetings too, connected by USB, no imaging edge software installed here, but my question is should it charge through the USB at the same time as transferring the data? Thank you. The usb will keep the camera charged but it’ll eventually get too hot and shut down. My latest vids explains all this and why a dummy battery is the best solution for super long streams

I'm just trying this now and while the picture quality is very good, the framerate is incredibly low. Is there a way to fix this? motion doesn't look smooth at all (I'm brand new to cameras in general)
Hey there, set the video exposure mode to program auto. That should make a difference (it’s what Sony advises to do as well in this situation)

Yes it does but depends on the USB port you plug it into. I've done 2 hour plus live streams via USB and the battery stayed charged the whole time.

Hey Vic, so I just started streaming with the ZV-1 and I thought the battery was basically not supposed to budge as long as it’s plugged in via usb. I run the Cam Link 4k with the usb plugged in also if that changes anything. Idk if it’s supposed to have the USB plugged in to the computer itself or a charging block in an outlet, I’ve tried both and the camera loses all of it’s battery after somewhere around 2.5-3 hours I’d say. The camera does show it’s getting a charge while I’m streaming from both the USB port and when I have it just plugged into an outlet, but again it slowly loses its charge. I know in another video you said you didn’t notice the battery budge at all after hours of use? Hope you see this, love your channel btw!

I tried to uninstall and reinstall the app, but now it isn't even showing ZV1 as an option. Also I dont see reset USB in my windows :( Please help..

Quick question. When my Sony zv1 ( thanks love it, bought from watching your you tubes) the function sunny weather on the monitor becomes disabled. Any ideas? can t see the monitor outdoors. THANKS
Thanks for the great video. You mentioned that if we use a capture device such as the Elgato Cam Link 4K, we would get better video as a webcam! How is that possible considering that the maximum HDMI output is still limited to 1080 at 30FPS? Can you please explain in more details?
Hi Yasser, the zv-1 will output 4k30 via hdmi. As long as you’re in 4k movie mode and your capture card can take a 4k signal

Giving it a spin at weekend on my a6400...what desktop tripod are you using for zv1?, my camera is balanced precariously over my monitor at moment ! Was considering a camlink but will give this a go first to see how it works out.
Hey Kieran, it’s actually a selfie stick 😂 that has feet. This is definitely worth a shot before getting a cam link, although the camlink will give you the best resolution and depending in what you’re doing you might end up going that way anyway. Let me know what you think though when you get it setup

Hi Vic, great feature this but I'm having some issues with the camera running out of charge even with it being connected and apparently charging? I'm wondering if it's the battery as I'm using a 3rd party battery (to preserve the original) or whether it's a dodgy USB cable, or whether it actually drains faster using it as a webcam and the charge can't keep up? Maybe I'll stick the original battery back in - I was only worried about wearing this out quicker due to it being plugged in the whole time...
Hey there. It’s to do with the voltage. But even then the battery will trickle down. Most I’ve got is around 3 hours. Dummy battery is the way to go for anything longer

Hello Vic! Great video! Question..can I do this with my Samsung Chromebook even if it doesn't have Windows?? I simply want to be able to use my chromebook screen for my camera because the screen on the ZV1 is too small for these 50 yo eyes! 😅
