  • The talk is a criticism of modern apathetic culture, and the concept of 'cool' and the attitudes of masculinity. It includes a personal story on what is a very prevalent issue. The main focus is around modern youth culture, and how the attitudes in which we project onto ourselves through it are actually becoming harmful to our well-being, and how the culture of not caring about things is leading to us placing our appearances over our own happiness.
Jack is a 19 year old from the north of England, studying Politics and Literature at UEA here in Norwich, with aspirations of becoming a political journalist. He spends most of his time caring about books, his friends, his family, himself and the planet. But when he isn't doing that he's either writing, getting mad at things or drinking too much- or all 3.
Jack was selected to speak following a public speaking competition at the University of East Anglia.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Really awesome! Lost my brother in 2012 by suicide. He didn’t want to be a burden so his emotions and addiction spiraled out of control. We need emotional education in our schools.

Or you could have noticed something and took ACTION. "We need emotional education in our schools." That right there *is* problem. People either simply don't care or care enough, that's the problem.

No offense but I felt like apathy is more present on the older generations. Got a problem? They'll tell you they're older and you need to move on the eff out that fast. They'll tell you you're weak and their problems are much more harder than yours as if younger people don't have feelings such as theirs. This is how my parents is whenever I tell them my problem so I just hide it myself.

I loved the fact that he asked the audience to talk to the person next to them about how they are doing because it distinctly shows that most people would rather say that they are fine in an effort to avoid the dialogue that might occur if they said otherwise. Sidenote - I am someone who would say I'm fine in order to avoid the dialogue that may occur.

As probably the no1 person in the world with the most amount of apathy,
i can honestly say that wat you describe in this video is not apathy.
Wat you describe is ignorance to the fact that you are happy as you try to tolerate the misery.
True apathy is 0% interest or emotional attachments to anything anyone or any activity that can be done or will occur.
Example:I dont care to reply here as i am literally incapable to emotionally give any interest towards doing this.
But i do it anyway for the sake of just doing it because i have nothing else to do in the next 100 years.
As nothing in the world could possibly spark any form of interest for me to care about anything.
(Wich includes looking for a thing that i might have a care for.)
Do note, True apathy is not depression but 99.98% of everyone in the world with apathy will either die or kill themselves.
Due to not caring if you die, to people like me it happens when it does and when it does it does.
No reason or emotional attachment in the world that is making me think its a good or bad thing to die.
And as such there is no difference between dieing tomorrow or in 100 years.
You would not be sad or happy at any time and have many problems fitting in the world,
Starting as early with:why go out of bed? you do not do it because you want to, and you certainly dont care about anyone else telling you to because you would not care about anything.
I guess the true definition of apathy would best be explained in robots,
They do not care why, they just do cos they do and you dont question that.
Leading into a very boring life as you do not care about danger, leading to not caring about fear.
Goes round in not getting excited and then not caring about anything joyous in life.
At the end, there is nothing but being 100% bored by anything and everything that happens as you do not emotionally
    bind yourself to anything.
And so most people decide you might as well end it instead of being bored 100 years and then die.
However, any apathic person in existance would be very open about this as there is no care about lieing or hiding it,
As no care about danger is there.
The main way to treat it would simply be to give the apathic person a reason to care,
Example:Dont die because you will make me sad.
Then the apathic person would still be the same but wont try to do anything even iff he does not care.
Because even though he does not care about you or dieing, he would still envy you for feeling wat he cannot.
And unsure how that would affect you the apathic person now just is living in confusion wich would be interest to knowing.
    So he cares...
Do note this only works iff you are not past the point of no return anymore. (Wich i have passed so far that i cant be bothered to think of an example of far away)
After this point you cant care about anything, anyone, any rule, any other persons emotion, any regret, your well being, or anything in existance wich could make you care.
As you cant be bothered to even get back your sense of caring.
if you ever want to know about an apathic person that is far gone but not completely gone, then look no further then xemnas from kingdom hearts 2.
(Spoiler free) He is a guy that thinks he can feel anything but he doesnt.
And so he spends his whole existance proving he should exist as nothing he does matters to him.
Ending up with a weird plot to find emotions trough spoiler means and in the end even relying on nothing else but himself as he has no emotions/cares to any of his fellow group members.
Proven by him using clones of himself.
(Small spoiler though, like 99.98% of all apathic's he also dies due to him not being able to have enough emotions.)
(P.S.:Sorry for the whole essay but due to the nature of not caring i assume not a single other person like me would go trough even the trouble of letting any evidence behind on how this works, after all why would i care about telling anyone or anything?)
Also before i forget, i am not depressed sad or suicidal at all.
I just dont care about anything.
Though keep in mind that i also was suicidal for 20 years straight and other people prevented me from dieing so far.
Now i dont really care, i can try to die and be stopped by everyone.
Or i just patiently wait for 100 years and ill die also.
No difference to me as i care about neither options really and as such i just wait till old age.
This was either insight-full or not i do not care, you do something with it, or just leaved it as is.
Just remember, Try to give me negative comments or correct me in anyway.
And you know i just do not care enough to check back any response to this.
Have a wonderfull day, and on to the next comment you go!

Sounds like your friend who left to help his girlfriend was under pressure to be whipped by the peer group instead. For so some reason they’ll say that you’re “whipped” is you do something for your girlfriend when she need you, but if they can use fear to intimidate you into doing what they want they’ll never call you “whipped.” They want your to be “whipped” to the peer group. How exactly is it brave or “manly” or by their own standards any less “whipped” to refuse to help your girlfriend when she needs you because you’re afraid of being judged? I know people who would call that cowardly. Refusing to help the people who you love doesn’t make you more of a man, in fact I’m sure that many people would probably argue that it makes you less one one.
