- Welcome to my channel! Just thought I'd show you a day as a Software Engineering Intern. I was there for 16 weeks (January to May) and commuted from Berkeley, in which I live a few blocks south of the UC Berkeley campus.
Also an IMPORTANT disclaimer: this is not a very typical day of someone working in this field. I filmed this during the last week of my internship after I had already completed my projects and I was just having fun. I also had to stay up afterwards to edit this video. Most days had a lot more actual engineering work than this.

Easy life. My schedule: get up at 7am, arrive at office and start to work at 8am. Lunch at 1pm for half an hour, back to work until 7pm. Back home for dinner and then personal time until 1am. Go to bed.

I came here to say this. A day in a life is becoming common. Giving others false ideas on being a software engineer or developer. The cliché part is mostly eating and hanging out, when in reality you gotta finish something within a small period of time.

What language do you use? I use to code in c++ but doing web ATM.... Want to start coding again but not sure which language to learn... I want to try python but not sure. Any recommendations?
The language really doesnt matter, as long as you learn the concepts or just focus on what you want to build - but if you want to do web, I’d suggest Javascript, then python

My work laptop is a 15 inch 2018 MacBook pro with 32GB RAM and touch bar

C’mon CZcams. THIS is NOT real - a day in the life of a software engineer!
About 5 months ago, I came across a style of software engineer vlog named 'a day in the life of a software engineer', and I decided to create one for a data engineer! Since then, that video has done considerably well - and it has close to 5K views.
However, in that same time period, I've seen many more 'a day in the life' videos in the tech and software engineer industry but these videos are not real. And this isn't meant to offend anyone but they're just not real. And nothing against those engineers in the videos. These 'a day in the life videos' are more like Instagram posts or highlights.
They depict the software engineer industry as an endless supply of food, fun and more food. And other gimmicks in between.
And I think that these types of videos do other real engineers injustice or even present a false narrative for college students and new software engineers of how the industry actually is. They don't even show what the industry is about. Very few videos actually do.
Don't get me wrong! Software engineering can be tough! But, it can also be fun. And in between, there are many industry best practices and real world challenges that the software and data engineering fields solve.
Now, in between all these software engineering skills and technologies, a day in the life of a software or data engineer can be challenging. What these videos don't show you are deadlines in projects, the 24/7 support that some engineers will be on to support the roll out of a new product feature(s), daily scrum calls for various projects, budgets and having to wear multiple hats in a company, and so on.
And in actuality, very few companies will offer free food 24/7. And if they do, that's because some of them expect you to be at your desk all day and not have to leave.
I never said this was "a day in the life of EVERY software engineer". This was just an actual day in my life, and yes I definitely have days where I just code for 12 hours straight - but I also have days like this in which I mostly just have fun and enjoy my day but also get all my work done. This also isn't the only thing that I do.
If I were to have filmed a day that was just me sitting at a computer, it probably wouldn't have showed up in your CZcams recommendations. Though I agree that this does perpetuate skewed expectations of the industry, and I will try my best to be mindful of that. I'm a software engineering intern too... except I work at a startup in New York, so I commute an hour each way, do nothing but code and debug (too small for team meetings), and work from 9 to 7...

@Tranhoang Long Don't know what you mean by that, but many people (including me) have things like Insomnia, Jet Lag, and etc. It's not easy for people who have Sleep Disorders to sleep.

Humble Hermit Yes, leetcode is fantastic IF you do then realistically (you simulate an actual interview as closely as you can). I’d recommend talking out loud and using a timer

What programming language do you use at work?
So my projects were pretty spread out all over the place. I mainly used Python and Go, but I made a few iOS changes in Swift.

idris I developed a pretty strong background in computer science / programming fundamentals in school, then picked up the more specific technologies and skills by doing internships.
I specifically learned Go and iOS during the course of this internship though.
