- What a beauty!
Finishing the Kyosho 60th anniversary Optima Mid prototype and cracking the code of the box art colour. In this video, we turn our attention to the body after finishing the carbon chassis. I worked out the box art colour so you can mix it yourself easily.

Very nice! Glad I found your channel, I really like your chew the fat discussion about the RC market. I hope you make more frequently.
Thanks and welcome to RCKicks :)
Ace looking build and great job with the paint matching it's never easy. Given as you're trying to match paint to dyed plastic that's been made with a plastic pigment in it you're never going to get it 100%, they're two totally different things, but that's as close as you could possibly want. Big thumbs up 👍
Thanks 👍
For the boxart photo, Akira used Pro-Line paints: 70% white (PRO632500), 30% mil-spec green (PRO632508), and a few drops of blue (PRO632506). A few could be considered 3. No magical wizardry is needed.
I tried along with hundreds of others - the result is nowhere close. It makes a light, but muddy military green color. No combination of the mixture works at all.
pretty close to the boxart to my eyes. well done.
Wow, that Optima Mid looks fantastic, you've got that body colour pretty close, nice one!!
I did a video on the paint colour 4 Weeks ago using those exact make and colours of paint
Looks killer!
If you hadn't pointed out the difference in color, I never would have noticed. Damn good job on this!
If I was doing it again I would go 10g less green and add it back in a few grams at a time. Not sure if that would be closer or not.
Awesome color.
looks epic need to pick one up
That is a nice color. It's great that you nailed it. And I'm sure so many will appreciate you for sharing the color mix with them. 👍
Kyosho posted a video on their CZcams channel last month on this car, and they left us an easter egg. The Green color that Akira-san pointed to at the 18:35 mark (on their video) is Pro-Line's Mil-Spec Green. If I get my hands on one of these cars, I'll try to mix using his suggesstion.
Beautiful Gavin. The colours seem to be a perfect match! Well done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Cracking job on the body Gav 👍 i do love the box art look of this one, but its a lot easyer to paint it white and get white wheels 😁
100% less messing about for sure.
Kyosho Optima Mid is super
The 60th Mid looks fantastic👌looking forward to the Yokomo build aswell 👍
Coming soon :)
I think the decals for this kit would look smashing with a livery that mimics the original Optima with blue, yellow and white paint.
This model is a replica of one of the pre-production prototypes.....and in the colours of Akira Kogawa.
Wany normal colours, buy a normal Mid !.
Wow ! You paint it perfectly
Anyone tried the colour match with CoreRC Spearmint Green paint? Otherwise it's airbrush paint mix to get the match. Great job on this build Gavin. Looks like a perfect colour match to me
All I did was use PS-54 cobalt green then backed with white then did the wheels the same colour…..perfect match couldn’t be arsed to mess around trying to match the body to the wheel so I did it the other way around 😊
I’m thinking of doing the same. Did the PS paint adhere satisfactorily to the wheels?
The Mid came out beautiful 😍 and i am really looking forward to se what you are doing with the Dog fighter ☺️👍 i do wish the release a lot of uppgrades and options like ball diffs carbon and titanium 😁👍
The endplates are how he had them set at the worlds. He does over the in the Kyosho video talking about the kit.
Tack!
Thank you for the super thanks! Thats most kind.
Looking good ❤
Thank you 😊
Looks great. Was really interested to see how you went with the colour on this one.
Spot on with the color if you ask me. Good stuff. Also I like what you did with the wing and the cartoon sticker.
Thanks! Looking forward to seeing how the display unfolds Ari. It tends to grow faster than you expect ;)
Hey Gavin - I’m about to paint body. I plan on using PS55 clear and then mix up Mr Hobby acrylic paints. I’m going to apply by brush and then finish with several coats of PS1 white to seal in. I note you used brush. Do you see brush marks at all? I’ve not painted an RC body with a brush since the 80’s!
Looks sensational 👌
Great video, I was looking forward to seeing you figure out the paint blend as I'm tempted to give this a go for mine. I was also thinking the same thing about an under tray, that would really complete this car nicely (especially if it had the shapely scoops something like the Optima Pro had). I already tried making an Optima Pro undertray measure up but it's just too far off due to the wider chassis of the Mid.
Looks great Gavin, well done, great build, i hope they bring out the LWB chassis based models ( Longer wheel based chassis, like the optima mid custom or the custom special) soon, i'm more
interested in those,
Well me have the Nuremberg Spielwarenmesse show end Jan 30th so keep your fingers crossed. I hope we see a TOMS!
Super nice! How far are Tamiya's TS41 (coral blue) or TS60 (pearl green) from this color?
Miles off unfortunately
Gav the body was probably more difficult as it is originally the body from the Optima pro not the mid
Did you spray it Gav or just brush paint, looks wicked
Came out absolutely gorgeous...but, I have to admit, that's one body I would NOT want to have to cut out.
Yep, it was a bit of a pain, especially around the spur cover
Nice chassis and great job on the body. I really think it was a bit of a dick move on Kyosho's part to not choose a paint that was available on the market. Some people love paint matching, and painting and decaling in general. That's not everyone though. Six of one, half a dozen of the other I guess.
The Absima blue - green paint matches 99% right from the can.
The dog f build wanna see that. Havent build mine yet. No time.
Got issues with my basher, cant figure it out. Was using a novac sc, then it stopped working, so changed to a few others (i have spare ) but same issue. Kinda think its either my motor(nah) or my receiver-
So bought a brand new brushed sc hobby wing. Set it up, then the wheels moved for a sec then stopped.. 🤷♂️ im stumped- any thoughts ? Thanks
I'm going to paint mine ps-54 And the wing black and ps-54 and Kyosho is going to make a chassis protector sheet for it .
The cartoon stickers are from the Japanese culture of kawaii. Things should be cute and appealing. It's very prevalent in Japan you see some of the cartoon style tamiya models that are the same style.
The Kyosho website mentions the rear wing endplates stating "Depending on your preference, you can choose between the specifications shown in the box photo and specifications faithful to the machine at the time for the wing end plates."
Does anyone know where to get a good undertray to suit?
Being a printer for 30yrs you done a good job of colour matching the buggy looks great congrats.
Are the backing colors under the body needed to achieve the great color match?
Nope, the backing colours are to protect the colour from changing when adding darker colours like the gun metal final colour
Nice colour match
Makes it look great.
Real quality.
What scales did you use as mine only go down to 1 grm so not accurate.
Love the channel
Looking forward to see you racing the yokomo, I might give it a go myself.
Thanks😇😊🥰
Something like this but if you look around you can find a load www.nisbets.co.uk/brecknell-epb-electronic-pocket-balance-scale-500g/dp040?vatToggle=incvat&cm_mmc=PLA-_-18097153123-_--_-&cm_mmca1=go_18097153123____c_&kpid=go_cmp-18097153123_adg-_ad-__dev-c_ext-_prd-DP040_sig-CjwKCAiAkp6tBhB5EiwANTCx1J41NvpH1VPAX8c5CfAnAKq9MURYMHIRpMpdeuLq3Bns2RloSRHzTRoCdLEQAvD_BwE&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAkp6tBhB5EiwANTCx1J41NvpH1VPAX8c5CfAnAKq9MURYMHIRpMpdeuLq3Bns2RloSRHzTRoCdLEQAvD_BwE
Thank you 😊
Looks an absolutely spot on match so I will use your measurements. :-) Did you just hand-brush the paint on? Or did you use an airbrush?
I hand-brushed and then sprayed on a backing in green, white and then gunmetal from Tamiya. Came out fine but you can airbrush it on or just hand paint it.
For hand brushing, do you need to add thinner to the paint mix?@@RCKickschannel
@@troyharris8701Not really
@@RCKickschanneldo you see brush marks?
Does the 87 come with undertray
Nope
Hey Gav just wondering how many attempts does it usually take to get that box “spin”at the beginning right? Always enjoy the videos!! 👍
You don't want to know LOL. Box spinning is a highly competitive business between RC CZcamsrs. We all have our own techniques :)
That's cool, a paint formula bc PS54 is no where close to the same shade
Yep the Tamiya colour is miles out.
You can BARELY see the colour difference on screen. Theres maybe a half shade of in between. The end plates Gav are a matter of preference, its supposed to be for tuning the wing for racing. If you were racing it, you'd position them either up or down for cornering.
Gav did you airbrush it?
First layer yes and then I got pissed off with it so hand painted the rest. I backed it in a Tamiya green, white and then gunmetal so it was smooth on the inside when done. No issues hand painting it as it was just like you did back in the day.
You dont Race it This buggy? 3:25 Run in your home?
"This ones going on the shelf". I cannot tell you how shocked I am at this revelation. You must need more shelves at this point. Maybe a shelf building video? Love the content though
Yes I need a load more shelves for sure LOL. I have three track cars soon so you will be pleased ;)
@@RCKickschannel I love the content regardless. The shelf thing is just too easy. I look forward to seeing the track cars polished up and on the shelves
@@RCKickschannel"Coming Soon: RCShelves CZcams channel." 😂
SERIOUSLY!!!??? has anybody in the US received their car yet? Pre-ordered immediately and paid immediately. I don’t think anybody here has gotten theirs.. I’m getting really impatient
US supply delayed at Panama canal. I emailed kyosho USA about 3 days ago, they said should arrive in a week or so.
Good scientific controlled approach Dr. Gavin. ✨🏆✨🫡
LOL :)
