This wasn't one I was going to get on the show, but a massive thank you to RD Models for selling this kit to me at cost so I could make this build content for everyone. rdmodels.co.uk
After the massive success of the CAT XLS, the follow on release from Schumacher I am pleased to say is the new Pro Cat. This takes the championship-winning design of the XLS and updates it with a new chassis layout, rear upgraded arms as well as a few other improvements.
In this video I build the chassis as well as paint up the body box art and show each step needed to make it a reality.

I used to race my Procat back in the day and I could never have dreamed of the spec sheet I’ve just ordered!.. One of the few advantages of getting older and having a bit more cash.

You did a great job on the build and the paint job. You have a lot of patience to paint it in box art using rattle cans. You should feel proud of your work. Thanks for sharing.
Holy Moly that thing looks sweet! Always seen them in the old Car Action magazines and was never really interested in getting one. But after seeing this build and the quality and retro style it makes me want to buy one. I would definitely have to drive mine. Good video as always!

I built a Procat recently, but destroyed the shell by using Tamiya paint remover - don't use that on this polycarbonate. I could find only the XLS body in Germany, so I converted it to accept the XLS body. You only need to change the top and bottom chassis plates to fit the XLS body. In the process of figuring out how to fit the XLS body, I think I learned all of the differences: The rear fibreglass shock upper mount. The lower fibreglass mount (that the camber rod ends connect to). The Procat uses tie rods for camber adjustments in the rear, while the XLS uses a small, plastic upper a-arm (I'm fairly certain that it is fixed and unable to adjust camber). There is also a little bracket that connects the upper a-arm to the lower mount. Also, the XLS uses a wire to connect the rear spoiler, whereas the Procat´s rear spoiler connects with a little pair of plastic mounts.

@@bharris0128 No worries at all. I have both the XLS and the ProCat to be built, with upgrades. Just a little intimidated by both of them - I assume it's best to start off with the ProCat.
What a quirky build, give me a Kyosho any day. Btw, I've started using PS58 (Pearl Clear) as my first colour.
The body looks great don’t be so critical you be quite surprised to get up close to even the pro drivers bodies To see how many mistakes or imperfections there actually are looks great thank you for all your hard work

Yeh congratulations Gavin you have done an excellent build up of this car , no suprise though as your a very talented model builder. In reply to the previous reviewer yes it's a great result and came up really nice. I just brought myself a Tamiya egress black edition yesterday and am still considering a Schumacher Pro Cat and was kind of unsure with the way people are complaint about the front suspension set up though. Even Gavin had a little trouble in this area. Regardless though it came out beautiful. Top marks Gavin, from Joe in Melbourne Australia.👌

Hi Gavin , body looks superb, wish I had that amount of skill for painting and masking , I’m still just a Juan can master ;) it’s a lovely buggy isn’t it. I was very pleased with mine once it was finished and they drive brilliantly. Top work ;)

Not on a polycarbonate body., I use Tamiya polycarbonate cleaner to do the same job.
It's good to hear you being honest about how difficult and annoying building a pro cat or xls is. When I was a kid I sold my Optima Mid to get an XLS. You can imagine what a rude awakening it was going from a Kyosho kit build (a joy) to an old school Schumacher (a nightmare)...also LOTS of parts were missing from my kit to add to the frustration. But, my old XLS did drive very well.....

This procat kit was a challenge to build compared to other rc kits I've built. Other than that I like the retro looks of this kit.

I want one Gavin. It reminds me of the SWB XLS.....
SWB came first and the XLS was released later to make it easier to drive and then the Pro Cat. For me the SWB has something special about it and it looks different in real life with its super dumpy scale. The XLS is still one of the best looking buggies of all time but don’t get me started on working on it 😩

Great job on the body. You did great for rattle cans and masking tape. Problem with cans is you have £60 into 1 body vs £10. Airbrush literally uses no paint and then you just back it at the end with ps paint.

The 4 front parts to hild the diff in are a right pain, why not one piece 🤔 ive done two of these now and still the part i hate. Cant wait till ive got the last one built when the pro trans arrives.
If you pull the pins back out a little bit on the arms they come very loose

I loved building Schumacher in the day, much more enjoyment than Tamiya. Forgot about soldering the ball ends until you mentioned it. I got fed up breaking front suspension on my lazer so moved to schuy and bands. Only thing I did not like with schey was the ery soft self tappers

It does and the design works better in real life vs the box. I wasn’t sold on it from the pictures but it does really work well.

Next one I hope they do is the cat 2000 or even better (praying) yokomo jump on the vintage cars with the YZ10 super dog fighter
Yokomo should rere some of the classics for sure.
The bosscat rear end fits as well the bosscat rear hub are a bit stronger

Should have used fluorescent green instead of that park green. Would have looked much better.
Brilliant! I would love to see the masking process broken down of possible. Also, I doubt liquid masks would be any good. I've never had a good experience of liquid mask when making scale models.

Will the older cat xls body shell fit this chassis???
Hi there, just battling away with the front assembly for the Procat. Can I just ask you a quick question please - your poly carb work is much neater than mine, what would you recommend to smooth of edges of polycarbonate ? My belt cover has jagged edges and I’m unsure if I can use sandpaper to smooth off the edges on poly carbonate. Thank you
Not sure how liquid mask would work with straight lines. I think your better off using tape for this one??
So was this one built box stock, with the box transmission or with the optional pro transmission? Thanks

Im in the process of building mine but I’m having a problem with front end. Ive got the pivot pins in finally but parts seem to be catching the front bumper. Did you have to take anything of the bumper ?

Gavin would a ProCat body fit on a Cat XLS undertray?
I think so yes as the XLS chassis is super narrow and the Pro Cat is much wider. You would obviously need to run the Pro Cat body as well.

Oh dear. I think we can all tell how much you hated that build! I like the idea of a Schumacher as they're great looking and I'm sure very fast. But I love building things and less fussed about appearance or driving, so if the build process isn't satisfying I don't think I could be bothered!

I assume he wears it because his wife is bigwig at Mercedes and she sponsors the channel and told him to wear it and she probably has to do that for legal reasons. All that aside I kind of like it 👍
It’s an RC show, not a fashion show. If you must know, the hat was my father’s and he past earlier this year. I wear it because it reminds me of him.
