I was 10yr when Lordi won. In Finland many of us little girls had always been fans of some heavier music (Nightwish for example), but Lordi took us all by surprise. Everyone was talking about it in every age range and for many of us smaller kids who weren't born when Finland won hockey the first time, it was the first taste of national pride. As here we rarely show much pride for anything and we are much faster to find the issues in everyday life. It was great.

I was too young to really be interested in these kinds of shows when this happened but later I found Lordi because my mother, fully supporting of my monster obsession, bought a Lordi T-shirt from a thrift store because she thought I'd like it. And she was right. I'm pretty sure the shirt was there because this was around the time this specific lineup had recently changed (I think it was Awa, the keyboardist, that had left around that time). And they've been one of my top 5 favourite bands ever since. The entire fun of this band is that they don't take themselves too seriously. Most of their songs are really goofily over the top, at least lyrics wise, and it's absolutely awesome. And then thanks to that some of the more serious songs hit that much harder on an emotional level I think (Children of the Night and It Snows In Hell are two of those that have always stuck out to me).
Unfortunately I've only seen them live once at the Tuska metal festival (my mother took me as a birthday gift, it was great even though I didn't get to stay for even a full day). The pyro was quite tasteful, considerable but nothing over the top. Fun and fitting. I haven't watched any show recordings in a couple years so I don't know how well Mr.Lordi sings in concert nowadays but back when I was able to hear it there it very good. He has that quality to his voice thay even if he doesn't quite hit a note, it kind of feels like part of the character and it makes the experience that much more interesting in my opinion.
Glad to see this band get some love, they deserve it.

Leena has an amazing voice & does a superb job on backing vocals. Something quite unique to Eurovision as the rules state no live instruments, but all vocals must be live. At that point & even today when on tour Lordi would prerecorded backing vocals. Her vocal talents were criminally underused live. If they didn’t re-record the backing track then the bass will be by Karma & not Ox as Karma was the bass player on the 2006 Arockalypse album despite Ox being on the album cover. And with Amen leaving the band earlier in the year, that only leaves Mr. Lordi from this lineup. Leena (Awa) still performs with Sampsa (Kita) & Niko (Kalma) on occasion when not touring with her current band. With Sampsa she gets to sing live which is awesome.

I'm still not quite over that but at least the two went in quick succession so it kind of makes it easier. I'm already largely used to Hiisi so I'm hoping that that will also soften the blow a bit, help me get used to Kone. As a Swede with a long standing boycott of the shit music they usually play at the competition, it was so refreshing and funny that this one won. Listening to it again it's basically pop but still controversial enough to break the "schlager" theme of the competition 😆

I remember that at the time before actual contest, fans of metal and rhard ock music all around Europe where taking in phbb forums and making Lordi to win. It was planned that fans in all countries would shamesly vote for Lordi to win in big numbers. At least that time voting your pick of the song could be done by like phone call, can't remember could it be done by text. But anyway it was like "For the first time we have serious metal/hard rock competor and we will stick it to the those posh pop singers " etc mentality. I remember those talks and it was glorious to witness that fans of this kind of music stick together and did give the big effing middle finger to the opressors! And also after it metal became more of main stream all around Europe... Well, at least in Finland, as it was first time ever we won Eurovision and it was done Monster rock/metal band!!! Metal music did officially come from underground to salongs etc and now we have like metal singers singing Yule songs in churches and other crazy shit!

Finland is this alternate universe where Metal is their "pop music" land where metal bands get played on radio stations. I love that Findland just embraced it that year for Eurovision and just went for a full out fun yet heavy metal song.

I know I'm a few months late but do want to share a few fun details about Lordi.
    1) I read in a comment somewhere on CZcams(2nd hand source) that Mr Lordi was really sick the week of eurovision. He says this is the worst performance he has ever done, and it is the clip with Lordi that has the most views. He feels a bit mad about it.
Story 2. I watched Lordi live in september 06 in sweden. Lordi as main band. Opening act. Sabaton. Now, this year. Sabaton had a big tour and in their european tour the opening act was.... Lordi.
It just feels so... Poetic. The circle is now compete.

Mr. Lordi likely doesn't subscribe to christianity other than drawing themes from it, and the man behind the monster, Tomi Putansuu, after a quick googling, is more likely a cultural christian ("belongs" to the church in name only, and doesn't really practice religion), because that's just how things roll for people of his age in Finland. I say this, because I found no evidence of him actually being a religious person.
If anyone can find mentions to the opposite from credible sources, don't hesitate to educate.

I have to correct here - Kita, the drummer here, is still rocking on. He participated in some other contest (might have been Eurovision qualification in Finland) with his own name and face and that's why they decided to part ways. The following drummer, Otus, sadly passed away, and now they have Mana playing the drums. Awa, the keyboardist here, left the band in 2012, the bassist Ox 2019 and guitarist Amen earlier in 2022.
