Making a Modern 18th century Jacket based on Beauty and the Beast

- Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
I have been plotting this project for years. I really don't know what it was in particular, but when I watched Disney's Beauty and the Beast (2017) I kind of became obsessed with Belle's jackets. Now, I know the costumes aren't historically accurate, but they are definitely historically inspired (and that is where I thrive).
There are loads of 18th century jackets that survive in museums today. There are all sorts of different styles, and often jackets were worn as the 'bodices' of the day (with a stomacher underneath or something similar). I show some of my inspirations and research in the video, but my point with this was not to be entirely historically accurate and original practice, but instead I wanted to make a jacket just like Belle's, but with a more 18th century cut. But I also wanted to be able to wear it day to day, as a little Disneybounding does Historybounding.
I'm pretty proud of the fabrics I found for this, although they were super expensive, so I bought very small cuts and had to make it work (18th century style). Much piecing ensued. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. It's very comfy and the perfect lightweight summer jacket. There are definitely some pattern alterations I would do. I keep cutting the necklines too wide, which makes these types of clothes fall to a more off shoulder axis, which isn't what I wanted, However, this was a really good practice drill and I have a plan to do another, but quilted!

Piecing is period. (I have to tell myself this almost every sewing project even modern stuff lol)
Absolutely! Not everyone was a queen, and the lower down the rung you were the more tricks you needed up your sleeve to make your clothes. Piecing is just one of those many tricks!
The stripes and birds combination could not be more charming.
Gah, that bird fabric...I need it! 😍
you really gotta stop with these I’m already working on my own Lizzie Bennett dress now I gotta make this too 😔😔😔
I don't have the skills to make something like this quite yet, but this has been one of my dream garments to make! An 18th century inspired jacket. You did a wonderful job!! I love the colors and fabric
I really like the pattern combination you used on this project! And your finishing of the seams looks beautiful!!
I loved this movie along with all the clothing.. along with the live Cinderella movie had great costumes too. Your jacket fabric is gorgeous...
I love the silhouette of these little jackets. And blue and white fabric is one of my weaknesses. Lovely. Stay well!
I want to make one too 😢 I fell in love with Belle's outfits of the movie.
Awww thats such a cute jacket - I'm sitting here green with envy
I loved both the stays and the jacket.
What a beautiful jacket! * __ * The peplum at the back is such a cute detail and makes it so much more fun in my opinion!
In regards to felling, I tend to do it as I go, even if itends up taking more time. I find that it helps with my progress as I won't have to think about the rest of the garment and can continue with whatever panels I'm working on. With my recent walking skirt project, it's so much easier to hold one panel in your hand and not having to wrangle 6 other panels ^^
Yep I agree! I wanted to keep the seams open so I could do another fitting when it was altogether :)
Omgosh, the fabric you used is so beautiful!!!
It is very lovely. I am adding this to my “need in my wardrobe” list. I would wear it everywhere. I really enjoy all of your videos. What pattern are your stays. They are beautiful
Stays pattern was from Norah Waugh’s Corsets and Crinolines! I have a blog post about making it at happilyeverytaffeta.wordpress.com :)
Yay, Historybounding ! I really like the music you used in this video
Felling Tm, 😆. Stays are beautiful, jacket is lovely.
The inside of this is sooooo nice
Thank you for explaining what felling is! I somehow had no idea what it was before now but it's brilliant!
Absolutely gorgeous! I am currently working on a history inspired (emphasis on inspired) Belle town dress, and your video could not have been more perfect.
I really like this. I think the different fabrics in the peplum make it perfect. I imagine that because fabrics were expensive that many sewists bought small amounts of fabric and pieced where it wouldn't be too noticable, (piecing is period 😉). Great video 🤣
Super cute and pretty! I would wear that 1000%
Oh those fabrics are so so pretty
That bird fabric is just the prettiest thing ever, where did you get it from?
Ebay I think!
Just gorgeous!
You are making my dream wardrobe! First lizzies dress and now this! 😍😍😍 I am in awe as to how much care patience you put into your work! Truly beautiful! 👌
We have such similar tastes, I love it! ❤️❤️
The blue fabric strips were definitely the right way to go!! Just lovely 😊
Turned out great!!
I love how this turned out!!
It's lovely! You look wonderful in it :) Also, I finished that skirt placket without your video! So there! :P It came out way better than expected, and I look forward to still seeing that vid so I can learn for next time :)
I am still hoping to make one but I've made no skirts and had no time! I'm glad to hear you still figured it out :)
It’s lovely and I love the piecing!!! Excellent work!!!
Lovely. I really appreciate how you finished all those seams too.
What ever issue you may have had with the top doesn't really show. Either way it turned out super cute. Now I want some of that blue birds linen 😍❤
It's so pretty! The fabric is beautiful.
WONDERFUL!!! So logical the way you stretched your fabric.
Looks lovely
So lovely, so couture Cat, love every stitch of it!
Looks lovely, fantastic use of your bird fabric : )
What a lovely jacket!! I really enjoying watching your videos. ❤️
This is such a cute idea and I'm really tempted to make my own!
The inside is so neat :) And it works very well as historybounding.
I love this so much!
Very pretty!
That fabric looks lovely! I especially love the bird pattern one. The jacket looks great! Seeing you use that loop turner just really emphasized how much I need to buy one I've been using a safety pin taped to a pencil and hoping the tape doesn't give way haha
Absolutely love it
Oh... so that's how to feld. Beautifully done!
Fell those seams! I do like this jacket
It's so pretty! Would totally make something like this when i'm a little more experienced in sewing
Considering how little material you had to work with it came out so pretty xx
Beautiful and inspiring. You made my dream jacket, so now I have to do it too : ).
wonderful 😍♥️
Very pretty! You are so talented! Ty for this! :)
omg, i love this!!
Happy to see you again.
I guess now I know what to do with that 1.5 yards of fabric I impulse bought. It's a pink floral neoprene and I guess I could make a simple jacket.
I love it!
Wow, you are magnificent! Great job.
Jackets 👌🏾🌷👼🏿🙍🏽💕 lv birds on fabric👌🏾🌷👼🏿🙍🏽
Oh the jacket is beautiful. I love the birds and well, piecing is period. 18th century Belle would have also pieced it if she hadn't had enough of the nice fabric so yay for piecing!
Muy bonito!
Bird is the word
Very pretty
The peplum is so cute 😭😭😭
I am so obsessed with this! Are you able to provide links to your materials? I really want to recreate one of my own!
Which sleeve was pieced? They’re perfect! Beautiful!!!
Cat, I love the striped peplum!
.......ESPETACULAR.........INCRÍVEL.........
Would you be willing to do a video on your historical costuming books?
I’d love it if people want to see them!
Ha! Felling TM! :D
This is just beautiful. I am wondering tho. When I was watching how you were felling the seams I’m wondering if the stitches show on the right side of the garment?
I only picked up one strand of linen so they’re nearly invisible!
beautiful! where did you get your thimble? Ive never seen one like that before and it seems better than the other metal kinds
I got mine at my local craft shop, I think it was the Clover brand :)
I love those stays. I LOVED the jacket!!! If I may ask. What kind of machine do you use? Mine is 30 years old. I’m looking for a new one.
I have a Pfaff Ambition Essential as my main machine and a vintage Singer as an occasional :)
❤️
I too use my phone as a weight
What pattern did you use for the jacket?
But where is the fabric from? It is so lovely and I need it
I think they were both eBay finds!
Cat's Costumery Thank you for replying. I must go sleuth on the internet for these now
Привет!!! Замечательно!!!
It always hurts my fingers to see how much handstitching you do... :)
Get yourself a well-fitting thimble.
pretty. where can one find linen tape?
I got mine from Etsy!
@@CatsCostumery thanks! i too must admit to liking the live action Beauty and the Beast.
Where did you get these fabrics?
Both from eBay I think!
Kat, what type of thimble do you use?
I have a basic metal thimble from Clover!
Молодец
very controversial opinion! sorry, not sorry, I enjoyed that movie, too, and very much, and i will fight people defending that movie LOL that jacket you made there is VERY pretty!!! ...very pretty, indeed. maybe i should make one, too...
Please don’t sew over pins. Your needle can break and hurt you.🩹
i did like the live action, i just don't understand the casting for bell. she can't sing( the auto tune physically hurts my ears), looks about 10 years too young, and is english... her father is speaking in an american accent... i loved most of the costuming because it was created with such whimsy rather to slap dashing some historical looking bits together.
