Making a Victorian Day Dress | historybounding

- Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
As I mention in the video, I was really digging the prairie aesthetic after binge watching the latest season of Anne with an E. After doing some digging around, I found that these prairie dresses could also be called/were similar to workdresses, working dresses or wrapper dresses (it is not uncommon for items in the 19th century to have 439 different names - they probably had minute differences that were common knowledge, but sadly not to me).
I found a couple of examples of 1890s workdresses (I've picked this term out of the list above) and got to work. My two main inspirations are the two blue dresses in the video (which also give me Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle vibes?), so when I saw this patterned blue cotton fabric, I thought it was perfect for a modern, historybounding version. These dresses seem to be loose fitting garments, kind of like nightgowns almost, which have a tie at the waist and some decorative features on the yokes and cuffs. I've also made mine shorter just for day to day wear. I think the dress ended up with more of a 'Victorian in the city' vibe, than a prairie vibe, so I will attempt this again but with a softer, more neutral fabric :)
Over all, this was a super easy dress to make! If you wanted to try but are not sure of drafting your own pattern, here are some options (please keep in mind I haven't personally used these patterns!):

Oh, this dress is so romantical!! If only it had puff sleeves~ Puff sleeves just provide such SCOPE for the IMAGINATION, don't you think?
absolutely! :)
Ok Anne of Green Gables (I do agree with you though 😊)
This looks so cozy! I'm planning on making my own soon :)
I think that would be simply scrumptious!
I was JUST looking for some sort of reference pattern for Sophie Hatter's dress from Howl's Moving Castle! This is WAY out of my sewing ability range, but some day I hope to be able to sew this well! Thank you, Cat! Lovely video, and garment, as always!
HOLY CRAP!!! I'm doing a Sophie Hatter cosplay and I was looking for the same reason XD
Haha mee tooo
Rise of the Sophie Hatter cosplayers! XD
I know it's several months down the road and y'all probably already have seen it, but Sewstine just did a Sophie dress that's a variant of this style of wrapper. Though it's intended for everyday wear and so not as accurate to movie per se, I'm sure you can find inspiration too.
@@BDavis-rb6xn Thank you! I have seen it! Certainly an inspiration. :)
Anne with an E references always find me in the most unexpected of places and then it’s sad boi hours
This Victorian bodice really recalls later 20th century cowboy Western shirts. Cool! Beautiful project, as always. Thanks for sharing!
Ah, I love the dedicated sewing pajamas at the beginning. B^) And for the dress, a beautiful fabric. You really make that blue look wonderful.
You look like an older Diana, beauty!!!
An astonishing dress, as always.
Yes, I was thinking how much she looks like an adult Diana!!
Exactly!
What a gorgeous fabric! The pattern almost reminds me of sashiko stitching. And the dress is beautiful as always.
yes I thought of shashiko too! :)
"Cannot compute" ugh, I feel that way all the time! Good job finding a way around it!
Love the finished dress. That's a great idea to use the Folkwear Gibson Girl blouse as a base for the bodice! I have that pattern, and have been wanting to re-make a dart-fitted 1860s bodice (that no longer fits me, but I have about 1/4 of the same fabric left) into a gathered bodice with a yoke ... I will have to do that!
That fabric was such a find, and I think the dress looks very lovely on you!
Prairie is such an underrated aesthetic
ANNE WITH AN E WAS SO AWESOME
The dress' beautiful shade of blue drew me to your video. My back hurt watching you bob up and down as you did those delicate hand stitches at your table, it looked like quite a workout! Lovely dress!
I love the hue of blue in the fabric you chose. It is a very nice quality as it was hard to tell which side is wrong or right. I like the dress with the touch of lace you applied. Nice job Cat.
I loved the Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows, back in the day. Haven't seen the one you mentioned, but I've heard it's quite popular. Here in the states, when I was younger, there were also 2 series on tv, The Walton's & Little House on the Prairie, that also have that aesthetic which I've loved, as well. Here in North Carolina, the weather has been in the 90's F (32ish C), so i always wonder how our forebears managed to not keel over from heat while working. Just lying in bed is shorts & a t-shirt w/ ac on is sometimes tough. LOL Great job, Cat! Q
So calming to see your sewing by hand and making everything neat and clean.
I also do not have this thing for turning belts and other narrow details. I use giant safety pin, pin it to one edge, and make it travel to the other end of the belt. Sounds weird but works.
The fabric is gorgeous! And the dress looks so good, i love the history bounding length!
You look so lovely in it Cat. Don't worry about the prairie feel, as it is an amazing color on you and you wear it so beautifully. Love from Canada!
I know this is an older video but I LOVE the color and pattern of your fabric! And the final look of it, so cute!!
That color looks beautiful on you! You remind me of Diana when you wear it
How have I never noticed your marking chalk. It looks so nice and you won't end up with chalk all over your hands, I might need to find me one of those.
I too am obsessed with the 1890’s
Beautiful job! I laughed at the orphan description. I can see a bit of that! But, it’s a historical day dress, and you did a great job!
Wow. Now watching the video I see the pattern in the fabric, it's really a pretty fabric choice in pattern and color.
I love the pointy yoke you made and of course with lace!! This whole working dress turned out wonderful! I really appreciate that you show little bits of every part that you worked on :)
That dress is beautiful and you are totally stunning in that velvet! Absolutely gorgeous. Well done.
Love it. I find day dresses much more interesting.
ohhh, this is soooo pretty ! You should maybe make that last photograph your new channel-banner-thing! it's beautiful!
now I really want my own workdress (and pretty apron to go with it).
AWESOMESAUCE DRESS! That cotton weave pattern is amazing! I'm kinda doing the same thing (Frankenstein-ing the TV 1890's shirtwaist) with flannel fabric to make a tea gown for lounging around the house in.
sounds glorious!
A dress of dreams one day I shall be able to make my own
Aaaaaah! Brilliant!! I love it 💖 I REALLY want to make one of my own. I just adore Anne With an E and I’m so sad it’s over 😭 the Anne of Green Gables books are some of my favorites of all time and I think they did an extraordinary job with the show!
Beautiful work as always!
I'm so inspired after watching your videos, I should probably go finish my walking skirt at last :D
Ann with an e has the best opening!
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing! Man, I wish I was as adept as you with a rotary cutter. Practice! Practice! Practice me thinks. Best wishes from Down Under🇦🇺✂️👗🌸😎
So pretty! You always do an amazing job. I need to thank you for your pleasant and interesting videos. I discovered your channel at the beginning of our Covid lockdown here in Texas, and having you as my lovely sewing companion has helped carry me through. : )
This is so so pretty!!!! And it seems just as comfy
This looks like a Mother Hubbard with a belt. I have been wearing these for 60 years. Very comfortable.
The dress is beautiful, not a style I would get much wear out of, but I really like the color
The dress is indeed lovely, and that color is amazing on you! Such a beautiful blue, I love it. If you go full on consistent with that era, wearing a linen or light cotton shift (or do you dare combinations, lol), I bet it wouldn't be too uncomfortable to wear even in summer. How did it do?
Beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing your project. Anne has always been a favourite character of mine and I think this dress would suit her to an "E" 😊
Lovely dress!! Agonizing over which trim to use is so relatable 😂 Any way, well done capturing that prairie aesthetic!!
The dress is really pretty and your hair looks gorgeous in the last picture !
Gorgeous work. I think they should bring the wrapper back!!! Soooo comfortable and tea dresses too
This is what I've been looking for. It's so hard to find examples. I'm going to make one in the most comfortable cotton print. Thank you for the inspiration
This dress looks so comfortable. 😍
I love your videos, so much, I have been bingeing pattern and construction videos recently and your videos always leave me feeling so well informed, I'm so much more confident in my sewing ventures! 🥰
Anne of green gables fan here!! I'm so in love with the show too.
Loved It. You have some Nice ideias for my upcoming workdress...
Lovely, you are so talented!
It’s an absolutely beautiful dress and I just want to also say that this video is so calming! Thank you!
So lovely!
Love it! Looks so comfortable and practical.
Lovely job, dear.
the fabric is GORGEOUS wow lovely dress
I love basic Victorian working dresses. 👏🏻
I'm about to make a similar dress and this was very helpful! Great video!
Thank you. This will be perfect for my Sophie Hatter cosplay. 😊
aw yes! I definitely had Sophie on the brain when I made this :)
Omg absolutely beautiful, can't wait to getting around to doing this! there are no where near enough Victorian sewing tutorials on YT, so thank you for this lovely one.
lovely dress. Turned out beautifully. Good Job.
Lovely, as usual
This is giving me big Jane Eyre vibes, I don't know why. But it's very beautiful.
That fabric is amazing!
The colour really suits you!
l like it a lot. The fabric is beautiful
Wow. Fab dress. You look so beautiful in it.
it's really cool. you could wear that now.
You definitely giving off some Diana Barry vibes.
You are so talented!
What a beautiful dress 😍 Do you ever wear ankle-length dresses or skirts? I think they would suit you very well, and still be practical for everyday wear.
Try to do a bi-color, yoke in one color with the cuffs, and belt, then the rest, another color or tone of the same color.
The music in this is so relaxing, where is it from please? xx
it's royalty free music from Epidemic Sound :)
what an AMAZING project. i have been dreaming of having one of these dresses ever since i watched my first anne with an e episode!! of course this is FAR out of my cutting and sewing range of abilities haha ha... ha :(
Love the color! it wasn't suppose to do that, but it reminds me of nausicaa from studio ghibli
That might be the only Ghibli I haven't see - added to my list, thank you! :)
Wow this dress is stunning, I might have to make myself something like this soon! It looks so comfy and I am always down for some good prairie aesthetic. For the blouse pattern did trace the same size as you did for the blouse?
I traced one size bigger (I wanted this to be even more gathered) :)
@@CatsCostumery Thanks I already have the blouse pattern so I definitely see a dress like this in my future. Hopefully it will be just as stunning as yours!
Stunning 💖 💖 💖 💖
Love this!
Probably not your style but I would wear it with some cowboy boots, a cowboy hat and perhaps a silk wild rag, and go full western with it.
haha I'd love to try full Western style!
@HM Bee - Ha! Cow-woman! ^_^
.......ESPETACULAR....MAGNÍFICA.....INCRÍVEL.........
Stunning amazing and inspiring :,,,,,,)
Question: Are videos monetized even if I skip the ads when the option is given, or do I need to watch the entire ad for CZcams to pay?
now i need to make me a new dress ...
That's a lot of work, to end up feeling like "an orphan about to become a housekeeper". But whatever floats your boat, as they say.
How much fabric did you use again?
What is the song that you use for the background music?
it's just royalty free music from Epidemic Sound :)
Wonderful video. Btw one of the links is missing https so the link doesnt work
thank you! :)
Hi Cat, what's the music at 7:30?
they're all just royalty free music from Epidemic Sound :)
I love your videos, the clothes you make is fabulous. The only problem that I have is watching you do hand sewing the way your head Bobs in and out of frame actually gives me motion sickness, sorry keep up the good work.
