  • My Tegu is looking and acting worlds better, but there definitely is some trust needing repair. Today I will be taking the "existing in their environment" taming method to the EXTREME in order to re-earn my Tegu's trust.

    ★About Professor Herp★
    I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
    My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

    Awesome content dude! Will start on socializing my tegu outside he's cage and lights! I believe in respect and trust is the key. Food respons should always be worked on and I found it solved by only feeding by tongs/hand (colored gloves).

    I lost trust with my leo after he was ill and being given injections etc. I ended up leaving him, and eventually he came up to me asking for a hug and that was it. All fixed XD

    It would have built a great bond if you had pooped after Frap did , that's the ultimate in Tegu bonding. They poop together and it's like becoming blood brothers is to us. You'll have to try again.

    Let me ask you guys a question
    Do you guys think $286 USD (Or $400 CAD) is a reasonable price for an Argentine black and white Tegu?

    • @robertmitchell103
      @robertmitchell103 Před 4 lety

      Fawaz Shaikh Argentine black and white from a good reputable breeder, typically charge $240- $280-Ish. So, $286 isn’t bad. Does the seller / breeder have a good reputation and genuine respect and love for the animals? I suggest and encourage you do your homework.

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  Před 4 lety

      Exactly what Robert said! I got mine from Laura Roberts for $250 plus shipping. So sounds reasonable. Just make sure the source is reputable!

      @@robertmitchell103 thanks! You see I'm from Canada and I found a Canadian Argentine tegu breeder. I know breeders are the best so i looked at the store. I was surprised to see they were for $400 CAD (286 USD) I wanted to ask if this was a reasonable price to a tegu keeper and I'm glad a got answers. You and your tegus stay safe! Plus they provided good care. They said any 8 foot enclosure is the absolute *minimum*. Isn't that right? Plus if you want to see their website then just search Tegu Topia. You should check it out!

    Hello! I have a two year old blue tegu whos having trust issues. Im definitely gonna try sitting with him longer each day for sure :) Though, he has become food aggressive. Ive been trying to change up feeding spots, but he still likes to come after my feet when i pass by his basking spot every once in awhile. Also, I like to take him inside, but i do have to grab him unfortunately to bring him in which he probably HATES. Does anyone have any more tips so I can gain his trust better in these two issues? I feel like I annoy him alot lol :(

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  Před 4 lety +1

      Have you tried feeding him outside the enclosure only? Or having a special identifier when feeding time (e.g. my Tegu's red bowl)? Trying the bathtub method and put in something with your scent in his hide :)

    • @diamonds4skulls
      @diamonds4skulls Před 4 lety

      Professor Herp Yes! I only feed him outside the enclosure, but I repeatedly fed him in the same spot (near his basking light). He kept charging at my feet/hands which really sucks. Hes been doing it less, but I tried to hang out with him and give him a treat to show “Hey, Im nice :)” and then he just went into “OK I only see food” mode. I used to do the scent shirt when he was a baby, but maybe I should keep doing it. He loves to hide under his enclosure, so I really need to close it off when we hang out because he just wants to go under there. He currently hates being in his enclosure as well, so Im trying to brainstorm ideas to make it a more positive space for him.

    Is taming a baby tegu hard?

    • @robertmitchell103
      @robertmitchell103 Před 4 lety

      Fawaz Shaikh 20-30 minutes minimum at least 5-6 days a week to start. I have 4 tegus and I got them all as babies.

    • @robertyoung701
      @robertyoung701 Před 4 lety +1

      Not the hardest reptile to tame. Definitely not easy though. About 30 minutes a day for at least every other day should be good. Do it every day as it makes the process go faster and it is fun. :)
