The greatest band in the world. What could have been if Cliff had still been around. This was the 1st metal song I had ever heard back in 84. Still remember that night...
I miss the Metallica of this era. For about two years in the late 80s I pretty much listened to nothing but Metallica. It was Ride The Lightning through which I discovered them. Still seeing them later this year.
Witnessed this in Austin Texas 1985 at the old City Coliseum. The only thing missing here is the stage-divers. We had shit-loads of punks at the show and no stage barrier. Cliff even helped a few up onstage it was mayhem and looking back one of the best shows I've been to. Cliff was a special dude hee made the crowd go nuts!
Shows were general admission then. About $15 to 18 for a ticket. No chairs on the floor. No assigned seating anywhere. If you were front row you were touching the stage. A year after this they toured with Ozzy, the crowd would sway when he walked to the far side of the stage and very quickly you would be 20 or 30 feet away from where you were just standing. During Metallica a mosh pit took up a nice circular chunk of the floor. The "security" and yes sometimes people onstage would help worn out people get out of the crushed front rows during the show. Back half of the floor quite a bit calmer. Still felt like a free country back then, instead of rules for 4 year olds. Like piling people in the open bed of a pick up truck and driving to the lake was still perfectly normal and ok.
Yes it is overrated, everybody talks about it as the ''best metallica's concert''. You better listen to Quebec 86', Zwolle 90' or as I said (Stoned balloon 89 they played HIT THE LIGHTS, PHANTOM LORD, MOTORBREATH and DAMAGE INC.)

At that time I could be your 12 years old brother
I was 30 yrs old then. Still listen to metal and go to any good metal concerts around Detroit. Rock and roll will never die.
how
***** but your grandfathers balls at that time? Lel
One of their best tracks...hands down!
This is the very first song I ever heard from Metallica
Needless to say, I fell in love with them after hearing this
2:40 is a man on a mission to conquer the world.
And he did it broh.... He fucking did it
He busted a nut
They already did.
He looks like ozzy when he's high on that interview
@@valentin2991 Was about to say the same thing. He probably has similar chemicals in his bloodstream at that moment.
All the shit that Lars gets is unfair I reckon. He fucken Slays on the drums on this
scottie balfour cocaine is a helluva drug
Jimmy Fucken Hopkins.... How are you doing bro? Hows life treating you after leaving Bullworth? Still going around beating the shit out of cunts?
scottie balfour hey man, life is good, I'm still at Bullworth, I'm the boss.
scottie balfour Russell is my homie, algie is dead, Gary killed him and I killed Gary, it's all good.
SUCH IS LIFE
Burton's headbanging is hypnotic
Band: how fast we will play
Lars: yes
Cliff made them so much heavier back then, his backup vocals sound very death metal inspiring.
In my opinion, he was Metallica. I stopped listing the day he died.
I said death metal inspiring, not death metal
Bret Armstrong u can barely hear him
Have you heard of Jason Newsted dude? Hands down the best backing vocals
Fuggler a la mode rob sucks tho
lars was a fkn monster in those days I'm just glad they are still here today making music
Back in the day when Metallica was ferocious! Good times!
Yeah, hard to understand why kids in the late teens/early 20’s had more energy then when those same guys are ALMOST 60!!! SMFH
If you’ve never heard it, look up Cliff’s isolated bass track for this song… and then imagine that being play at this tempo.
How the hell did Cliff play so fast with two fingers?
Matthew Hoag cuz he is Cliff Burton dude
He was a classical pianist that learned Bach music from a young age. That helps.
It’s a skill that takes a lot to achieve.
He wasn´t the most accurate live bass player, big difference between him and Jason.
No, but he was instrumental in creating the good songs. That says more about musicianship than accurate technique. Metallica had a feel, the feel wasn't supposed to be perfect, but it was Metallica. Their new music took a dive after Cliff died because he was a main force behind what they did up to Master of Puppets. You can go watch a cover band with 'accurate' players but it doesn't mean much because they are playing something someone else made.
2:40 it’s like out of the exorcist.
Riff_Hero lol
Lmao love james! 🔥😂
FelixVlogt More like alcohol, James didn't did cocaine, Kirk and Lars did.
Hes high on metal
James never did drugs actually, only alcohol
That was the first time I've seen this, The most beautiful thing I have heard or seen and I will continue to find more. Whoever is putting out this footage of CLIFF! GOD BLESS YOU! MAY CLIFF LIVE FOREVER! MUSIC NEEDS HIM!
kirks solo was hard to hear because of the sound quality, but metallica back then was just unstoppable. period.
james' voice. miss it.
abstractheory1
b
abstractheory1 Cliff's backing vocals...
Ankit Yadav
No. Not even close
On here he sounds like a 15 year old
Lars gets some stick off a lot of people, but he was an absolute beast.
Clinton McCutcheon he was
key word is "was". He wouldn't get shit if he could still play like this.
"Was"
He was incredible...
Clinton McCutcheon was....
I saw them in February of 85, I was in high school lol met the whole band, I’ll never forget that.🤘🏼
When Metallica was Metallica, the good ol’days. Man I miss the 80’s.
Arturo Almazan Another random Metal elitist comment
@Arturo Almazan people like you are why so many people look poorly on the metal community.
A great reminder of why Metallica is SO great!!!
WAS
@doyledeth
Dude, just give up. It´s getting tired, it´s the same band today as it was in 85. Except Cliff, of course.
sergeanthetfield
I never take fanboys seriously.
Besides, I never said they sucked either.
Yessir
Ernesto Catalan Just to remind you that Megadeth is still better... 😃😃😃😃😃
that scared the shit out of me when james stared at the camera at 2:41!!
Lol Yes! I felt like I was busted for staring at him. I may have even looked away. 😁
Tallyca Hamulhetru
murphyjones100
it seems possessed
Bruno Luciano López Alegre Are you serious? He is possessed, possessed by HEAVY FUCKING METAL lol.
This must have been one of their very best shows - every single track was brilliantly performed at this location.
How I love this. It's good seeing Cliff. Thanks to whoever filmed this! \m/
RIP, front rows ears
RadiationRacoon exactly, Rock In Peice :3
the double bass is fast like dyers eve
imagine if Dyers Eve was on RTL lol
Mateus Cesário
it would suck due to the awful drum sound and mixing lol
double bass is fast like fight fire with fire.
hell no man! this is the fastest, fastest, of the fastest tallica's songs
This makes even 80's Slayer to look like glam rock.
What?
you definitely dont know who slayer is lol thats just blashphemy and stupidity kirk hammett said himself that slayer was more extreme than them look at ritz 86, dynamo 1985, studio 45 1985 and the WHOLE reign in blood or hell awaits album and come back with that bullshit slayer was possessed in the 80s no one like em in terms of intensity and furiousity as much as i like metallica slayer make em look like lil ass boys
Can you imagine the look on the kids faces in the crowd? Like, "How is that possible?" "What the Fuck are we watching?" Brutal, vicious, speed and FORCE! Just melting your face off!
you get it , thanks kid
I was 16 then and yes this was OUR music
1:41 “ending is near AHHHHH!!”🤘🏼🤘🏼
that scream was classic hetfield
It will forever be printed in my heart ❤️
This was the song that amplified the aggression and the angst that I felt my entire youth. If it wasn’t for Metallica my life would never be the same. Thank you
So grateful I witnessed them during this time 1985. NO OTHER as heavy and in your face as the mighty METALLICA. All hail 🔥💀🔥
Did you saw them in 1985?
@@Liviopedatayep! They were phenomenal!!!
@@LisaBellaDonnaMusic you saw this gig of metal hammer? Or others?
@@Liviopedata hi there! No, not this concert but saw Metallica back in 1985. Right before Master of Puppets came out. We were all in AWE of them at that time. I’m a fossil, lol so I was fortunate to witness so many amazing concerts of that era. 1978-1985 were amazing years for heavy metal rock and roll.
@@LisaBellaDonnaMusic maybe Kabuki 1985 or donington you went it was golden times the end of 85 from donington till new years eve 31 december
0:55 holy shit look at those fingers!
Metallica of today would be afraid of these guys
Rafael Rios- Rafinha! Lol
No
80s metallica open for modern metallica haha
Probably today´s Metallica would school them though
They still playing this to date. Sounds just as good if not better.
I bought "KILL EM ALL" when it was released...I was like...what the hell is this...it was almost shocking. After I listened to it for a few times...it grew on me big time, and then everyone started listening to these guys.
This is from ride the lightning
How was your first impression hearing Ride The Lightning in that time ?
Я тоже в 1988м купил кассету, с альбомом Kill em All, где бонусом было несколько треков из другого альбома, Creeping death и несколько песен Diamond Head
@@aatefnazar6185 He didn't say this wasn't from RTL
80's Metallica is just something else, they're raw, hard and fucking Metal as fuck
man its so good to actually hear the bass to this song, and cliff playing it on top of it!
The single song that got me into Metallica, into metal, into music in general.
I really wish they'd bring back some of that contrast of Thrash/Classical
have you heard any of their new songs? They're actually pretty good and attempt to bring back thrash, and honestly, they've done a nice job :D
Ocelynx Prowler Yeah, thrash for sure. Maybe a little too thrash. I liked the contrast myself.
The thrash is back, but that classical music element is definitely missing.
Haha, yeah, agreed :D
***** Definitely one of my faves of their new album, I must say, I'm loving it right now.
The greatest band in the world. What could have been if Cliff had still been around. This was the 1st metal song I had ever heard back in 84. Still remember that night...
Shon Jimenez you'd be able to hear the bass on the Justice album.
I miss the Metallica of this era. For about two years in the late 80s I pretty much listened to nothing but Metallica. It was Ride The Lightning through which I discovered them. Still seeing them later this year.
Metallica were great in 1985, but they were monumental in 1986.
Now thats how you blow any other band off the stage for eternity.
Corpse Grinder
Back in the day when Metallica played balls out and fast. Pure fuckin thrash. The good ole days
El Debarge could give them a run --czcams.com/video/cAQSZhazYk8/video.html
Corpse grinder... I guess these days people are just taking a random picture off of Google as their profile pic lol
:*
Yes, the 80's. I wish them back every second of my life.
Because i was a member of the front rows at this gig😉.
I would give up all tech to be back in the 80's.
Best gig with cliff?
Pretty sure when James starts his riff the entire crowd takes a step back like whoa holy shit. This guy means business.
Excellent song Metallica fight fire with fire 1980s Metallica
DAMN this might be one of the single greatest early Metallica clips I have ever seen!!! The good ol' days of early thrash!!
Lars was playing out of his mind! Love it!
I've been reading Cliff's biography and watching these videos all over again is giving me all kinds of emotions.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘 I miss the 80's
That was ridiculous when James and Kirk played that guitar harmony after the solo...effing perfect!!
Witnessed this in Austin Texas 1985 at the old City Coliseum. The only thing missing here is the stage-divers. We had shit-loads of punks at the show and no stage barrier. Cliff even helped a few up onstage it was mayhem and looking back one of the best shows I've been to. Cliff was a special dude hee made the crowd go nuts!
klbj94fm nice lie you bitch
Man Lars tore it up!!!! Human drum machine!!!
Those drums are 👌👌👌
This is my favorite era of Metallica \m/
James Hetfield nice performance bro
me too
A minha também 🤘
Holy Shit The Best concert EVER!!!
+Invision Software. No! This concert is better.
+ajwasp yes, this concert is insane and brutal. The voice of James is better of all times in this tour.
hahaha Seattle 89 overrated. Listen to Stoned Balloon '89 the setlist is 1000 times better that Seattle
Yes it is overrated, everybody talks about it as the ''best metallica's concert''. You better listen to Quebec 86', Zwolle 90' or as I said (Stoned balloon 89 they played HIT THE LIGHTS, PHANTOM LORD, MOTORBREATH and DAMAGE INC.)
wtf are u saying? james voice is at its best during the justice tour we all know that
The amount of Ambition these guys Had To spread metal and music from garages so real and oure
Im so happy I shared my youth with them and gotta mention how much Lars sure developed as a drummer and fast
Love how In these old videoa his head just A dark shape etc
I always inspire by metallica honesty
The most punk band To me with Glenn danzig stuff. Just pure and not faking and boy have they aged Well and matured
Thank you Metallica just Thank you. Greetings from Finland Turku
The beginning before the song always sounds so beautiful and also the whole song
metronome = cocaine
How I wish it was '85 all over again.
This is you what you call a metal concert, kids - no posing twats with I-Phones, all just there to enjoy the band.
Nothing else.
\m/ \m/ \m/
Moscow monsters of rock in 91
As an iPhone twat I wish it were still like that.
I first saw Metallica in 86. Then 93. Then 2019 a couple of months ago!!! YEAHHHHHH!!
smells like boomer in here
Nothing Else Matters.
Gracias por compartir esta hermosura.
For some reason seeing Kirk play a fender stray brings me joy
It's a fender copy of some type with humbuckers and a floyd rose. I forget the name of the maker.
probably is a fernades stratocaster
I wanna say it's an ESP I'm not too sure, I read an interview with Kirk about how he started using ESPs around the Ride the Lighting/Master Of Puppets era, I remember reading he had an ESP model that was shaped like a fender, if I remember correctly
at the time he played a San Dimas model strat.
Oh yes, most definetly a Charvel or Jackson strat replica.
