The Beef Between African Americans and American Africans | Victor Muthama | TEDxCMU

  • The US Government hasn’t recognized Victor as American for his whole life, despite the fact that it’s the environmental culture that he grew up in. Likewise, in Kenya, he is hardly recognized as Kenyan either. In his talk, Victor explores the relationship between African Americans and Africans, and dives into the history and potential causes of these dynamics. He poses the question, why do the cultures clash more than blend? Victor Muthama is a Kenyan born Pittsburgh raised artist. Music and science were early interests of his from a young age. He has been classically trained in piano for over 5 years and vocal performance for over 15. He currently is a 1HOOD artist but has not left his love for science. Victor coordinates the CVC at UPMC and also works for Bank of the West California. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is exactly what we as Africans and African Americans need right now. As an African, I have no ill intents towards my African American brothers and sisters. If we unite, we will be as powerful as any other groups of people.

Being Nigerian American, I never had issues with African American as I grew up with them. The individual is what matters. There is bad and good everywhere. I also make it clear that I can't carry the burden of 54 individual African nations just like one African American can't represent all 50 us states. African American culture varies by region so it's important to learn that before lumping them all together as all bad, southern folks have good manners and folks up north is just aggressive and don't care. That's my two cents for now.

I attend a African church for the last 2 years and they treat me like family I tried to date to Africans one of them fell in love with me but their family did not approve of me being an American woman. The second one adored me but was afraid to come to my neighborhood he did not feel safe with his life. You are speaking some positive real reactions. The term "African Booty Scratcher" is not a term for recent African immigrants. It is a term some children use that can be applied to anybody of African descent--particularly those who have dark skin, a broad nose, kinky hair, and/or other facial features associated with the African ethnic groups we hail from. This term was born out of our internalized self-hate. Someone of African descent who came from the Caribbean and someone who has been in the U.S. for centuries can all be called that term.

My father is from Nigeria and my mother is American born from the south, growing up experiencing both cultures I can say I’ve seen through both sets of eyes. I was made fun of for my last name being African and hard to pronounce for some. I also been on the side of making fun of other Africans because I wanted to fit in with the culture we have grown to know in America. It’s hard because my dad would tell me to be like his fellow African friends kids because they study hard and are smart unlike the African Americans here. Me being born here in america made them see me as a sort of hybrid so most don’t know how to take me. I enjoy both cultures and I’m happy to be African on my fathers side and American on my mothers side. I don’t have divisive ideal’s I’ve always loved both sides and feel like we should be one together in unity.
