The Beef Between African Americans and American Africans | Victor Muthama | TEDxCMU

- The US Government hasn’t recognized Victor as American for his whole life, despite the fact that it’s the environmental culture that he grew up in. Likewise, in Kenya, he is hardly recognized as Kenyan either. In his talk, Victor explores the relationship between African Americans and Africans, and dives into the history and potential causes of these dynamics. He poses the question, why do the cultures clash more than blend? Victor Muthama is a Kenyan born Pittsburgh raised artist. Music and science were early interests of his from a young age. He has been classically trained in piano for over 5 years and vocal performance for over 15. He currently is a 1HOOD artist but has not left his love for science. Victor coordinates the CVC at UPMC and also works for Bank of the West California. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you young brother. Keep the message going.
Being Nigerian American, I never had issues with African American as I grew up with them. The individual is what matters. There is bad and good everywhere. I also make it clear that I can't carry the burden of 54 individual African nations just like one African American can't represent all 50 us states. African American culture varies by region so it's important to learn that before lumping them all together as all bad, southern folks have good manners and folks up north is just aggressive and don't care. That's my two cents for now.
my brother I am Ethiopian American, you are missing the point as African world wide what is been done to us in deeper level by colonization and slavery.
Just like Africans some love african american some don't. It's the same everywhere you go. I agree with you.
thats the thing. kids dont see color. its some time during and after high school this starts.
We don’t have a different culture by region we just have different accents ! The core of our culture is all the same
That's a myth. Most blacks roots are southern.
Very interesting talk, thank you!
Very interesting and while I know its not at all the same, I felt a bit of understanding when you talked about your childhood and where you fit in, as a biracial person that's difficult to navigate. Besides that, the whole video was so interesting. Thank you for the knowledge!
Truth! Thank you and keep up the good work.
I truly thank you for taking the time to express this much needed truthfulness, Brother❗️ Many Blessings To You❗️✊🏽

Yes I think 🤔 I just fell in love. 🧐🥰 He is really breaking it down I am from America and I'm a American and it bothers me when I see Africans being made fun of. I attend a African church for the last 2 years and they treat me like family I tried to date to Africans one of them fell in love with me but their family did not approve of me being an American woman. The second one adored me but was afraid to come to my neighborhood he did not feel safe with his life. You are speaking some positive real reactions. You stay strong the way you pronounce words is extremely attractive much more attractive than watching a guy with some timberland boots on thinking he's all that. 👈🤷
Excellent post. We all need to unite. Thanks.

Much needed conversation! I appreciate what you covered! I did not realize the comparison between colonization and enslavement before seeing your presentation so those were my key takeaways!! Thank you!!

European tribes hate each other more than you do. However, when it comes to forming alliances against others that they will not hesitate to do so. Let's focus on our common humanity, the right to be equal to anyone else, the right to feel value, security, and prosperity.

The term "African Booty Scratcher" is not a term for recent African immigrants. It is a term some children use that can be applied to anybody of African descent--particularly those who have dark skin, a broad nose, kinky hair, and/or other facial features associated with the African ethnic groups we hail from. This term was born out of our internalized self-hate. Someone of African descent who came from the Caribbean and someone who has been in the U.S. for centuries can all be called that term.
It came from the movie Boyz N The Hood. I didn't go to school with any immigrants and it was thrown around no matter what skin tone, phenotype you had. The particular scene was even that of kids in a class room. Interestingly enough I happened to watch the movie on TV a few months ago and they cut that part out of the movie.
@@pippishawtstockins2413 That term is decades older then that movie lol be quiet kid
I’m cool with Bantu.
@Canda Wrong that term has nothing to do with people from the carribean
@2b1unique1 That is not what was said. Go back and read the comment. He or she said it can be used to anyone who looked Bantu.

My father is from Nigeria and my mother is American born from the south, growing up experiencing both cultures I can say I’ve seen through both sets of eyes. I was made fun of for my last name being African and hard to pronounce for some. I also been on the side of making fun of other Africans because I wanted to fit in with the culture we have grown to know in America. It’s hard because my dad would tell me to be like his fellow African friends kids because they study hard and are smart unlike the African Americans here. Me being born here in america made them see me as a sort of hybrid so most don’t know how to take me. I enjoy both cultures and I’m happy to be African on my fathers side and American on my mothers side. I don’t have divisive ideal’s I’ve always loved both sides and feel like we should be one together in unity.
Question is your mom African American or white American , because your saying just American
@@shippyc9990 I can see that, my picture would dispel any notion that my mother is Caucasian. So that would mean she’s African American if I was unclear in my previous statement.

We need to just love one another.
I always thought how ridiculous it is for AA and Africans not to like each other. Since millions of Africans were brought here during slavery. Most AA are descendants from Africa no Matter what they want to believe.
AA need to find out what tribe their from and Africans need to understand that most AA roots are directly from Africa.🙂

Here in Colombia we have lot of African Ascendant, but when we talk about unity people think it is not Possible.
Thank you for giving some hints about how to overcome that kind of thinking
It’s not possible. Pride gets in their way
Unity is the only thing that will save us. Our oppressors stay unified.
Unfortunately the way Africans were colonized it makes it hard for many of them to see the bigger picture. They still believe joining the system will eliminate their issues. They also abandon their ppl for access so how much can we really expect from them in regards to the fight? Too many believe in running vs fighting.
like with good seeds and bad seeds you take the onrs you can use and throw away the ones who go beyond saving.
The theme is used in the Bible remove the thorn out of your own before going towards the neighbor.
The colonisers think in terms of color are we as primitive as they no.
Lift each other up and see where the relationship can go. There are proyd warriors from both who want the samething freedom and thriveability.
