@@totallynotpeppermintI think it's some warped misunderstanding of iodine needs in birds. Like they were sort of on the right track, kind of, maybe. Iodine is essential to a fully functioning thyroid and long life of a bird..... they just weren't completely right yet back then.
The fact its in a weird way sort of grounded in truth, kind of I think is what makes it so hard to dispel the outright dangerous myth that the need iron in the water via a nail. That's of course outright wrong, but it's close to the truth that they do in fact need iodine when in captivity that its so hard to get people to let go of the old practice and embrace the new one that is actually factual and essential.

my dad told me that humans can get some bird colds and we can catch them too- he also taught me to care for my first parrot a tiny bit forcfully for my parrot with the wrong diet etc, the way he did when he was a kid. I did try to do it right though and she loved me nonetheless. if I ever get another parrot, I’ll be sure to care for them properly, I started researching about parrots and birds since 8 months before my cockatiel flame’s death, I still learn as much as I can to this day. Thanks for the videos that give me more ideas to research deeper into! Good job, Elle. x

I’ve had them try: kiwi, grapes, strawberry, carrots (shredded and whole), and they used to like lettuce

I am going to adopt a cockatiel from a rescue, her name is Shania and she was found it a city close to where I live getting eaten by crows but some one found her and called the rescue which took her to the hospital and saved her life. My mom was volunteering at the rescue so I came with her and I was cleaning the small bird room when I see a little cockatiel running back and forth in its cage chirping for me so I took her out and I instantly knew she was the bird that I need need to adopt. When I came home that day I started doing research and that’s when I saw your channel and I can’t tell you enough how much you helped me with learning all about what birds need and the food and the flight cages and all the safety precautions so I got everything that you had for ducky and made all of the toys and I made 10 natural perches so when I adopt Shania in a week she will be the happiness bird alive😊😊THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL O& YOUR AMAZING CONTENT ❤❤❤ Be for I found your channel I was a 13 year old that was clue less about birds, but now I’m 100000000x more smarter about birds. I've been keeping parrots for a long time and I remember some of these recommendations, especially the one with the grit. I want to say something. Clipping does not stop the ability to fly. The cockatiel is a small, light bird, it will easily catch any air current and you will not see it again. If the wings aren't clipped, at least it'll be able to fly away easily if a predator tries to attack it while it's outside. Thank God that in many European countries, including mine, this is considered an unacceptable and cruel practice and I don't remember a time when it was recommended. Unfortunately, it is still common in the US, especially in pet stores.

Though I do not have any pets I spends hours each morning trying to rescue songbirds by bringing any inured birds I find to a bird rehab. Budgiergars do in fact need "grit" in some circumstances. Not the type of grit these books (or modern pet shops for that matter) are advertising.
To say they should never ever have grit is just as harmful as to say they need the type of grit yoid give a pigeon.
Breeding pairs absolutely require a soluable mixed mineral grit. Breeding colonies in the wild have acess to mineral rich soils following the rains. This mineral rich soil is essential to their breeding cycle in wild. It does absolutely nothing to grind seed. Its the minerals that are essential to reproductive health. We cant give them that soil in captivity, but we do manufacture soluable mineral compounds which we call grit. Very frustrating that it has the same name as the grit we give birds that eat seed whole. Its not the same thing at all.
Saying Budgiergars shouldnt ever have grit is dangerous if the birds are breeding. Its important to distinguish between soluable mineral grits and non-soluable gizzard grinding grits. They are two separate things that share a name.

And I have a question😂😂😂. I have a really hyperactive and adorable lovebird. I adopted him 8 months ago and now he is like my own child. I feel like I've become a mother. 😂😂😂. He's been scratching a lot since the day I adopted him. I know, birbs always scratch themselves. This is normal. Since i had budgies before, i know how often birds scratch. But he literally scratch too often!! Whenever I see him, he continuously itching himself like there’s no tomorrow. But he never pluck his feathers. His feathers only shed on the shedding periods. I was worried about louses and fleas so i regularly spray him with flea/louse spray. But his itching is not decreasing. What can i do? So recently i was worried it might be fungus. What should i do? Do you have any advice for us?

Hey Elle! I need your help. I don’t have any social media so I don’t know how to get to you other than through the comments of your videos and I’m hoping you read this or some of your fans help me :)
So im 13 years old (today is my bday btw) and my parents agreed to getting me a bird. Our budget is probably around $200-$300 for initial purchases and I’ve been working hard to find good stuff at good prices. I’ve been studying how to care for birds a lot and plan on becoming an avian vet in the future.
So basically I need help finding the right bird. I’ll give you a few points and kind of explain must-haves. I own 4 dogs, but they are all super friendly and have experience with many other animals but never a bird. I plan on keeping the bird within my room or distant from my dogs (like putting them outside while it flies around). My room is pretty big and I have plenty of room for a large cage. My mom wants a lovebird or a smaller bird. I have split parents so I need her to care for my bird while I’m gone. This means I won’t need a bird who easily bonds to one person and gets aggressive and I need a really cuddly bird that will be affectionate to the whole family: my mom and step dad, my sister (15), me (13), my little brother (9), and my little sister (6). We want a bird that’s anywhere between the size of a finch to the size of a medium conure. It would be nice to have one that can talk bc I’m lonely pretty often and I’d find it fun to teach it phrases and kind of be able to have that way of communication. Any bird you can think of? Please reply or any of the feather fam help me out!!!

Hello, Elle! i have a really adorable lovebird. He loves to nibble on stuffs/plants, just like every bird. When he chewed all of my mom's hall plants, we decided to buy him a tree that could be taken care of at home. The lemon tree. I haven't put it in my room yet. When I searched it up on the Internet, it said it would be harmless, but I still wanted to ask you too. Will the lemon tree harm my bird? I want him to be placed on a branch, chew it all he want, relieve his stress. If you say it's harmful, what other kind of tree can I buy to look at at home? Can you give me a suggestion, please?

Elle what size harness did you use for your conure? I got a petite size but the collar was too tiny for her head. Is x-small better instead ??

Guys I need help. I wanted birds when i as eleven so I got birds from Petco with a tiny cage. Seed diet, never tamed. Neglected, all I did was keep them alive. After I watched these videos I feel so bad and have been trying to tame hem and change their lives I got a giant cage and have been trying to tame them. Since they were neglected for about five years:(( they still aren’t tame. That’s all my doing though. Today I just opened the cage and they came out eventually. The have just been chilling for about five hours. I don’t know how to get them back in. It’s been 5 hours. I don’t want to scare them. I don’t want to ruin any trust that they have in me. Please help I don’t know what to do. I need advice:(((

Depends on the type of bird, if it's any type of parrot grit is harmful but if it's a songbird, pigeon, dove, etc it is necessary!

@@ElleAndTheBirds I own a budgie, the man at this professional bird shop told me that I needed it but I'm unsure if I should stop using it or not, what kind of problems does it cause if so? (I feed him it mixed with pellets)

Canaries and finches don't need grit, they remove the hull of their seeds.

Anyone who has pet birds now probably have it way better then the pet birds in the past apparently. Especially compared to the birds who had owners that did what the first book said.
