  • Curtis Haines, Permatex Associate Innovations Manager, discusses the different types of anaerobic gasket makers and flange sealants available to modern auto technicians, so you can choose which product is best for the job you're working on. Curtis also talks about the "when" and "why" certain types of anaerobic gasket makers should be used.

    Permatex's Anaerobic Flange Sealant should be fine for use on aluminum. The Technical Data Sheet shows the cure speed of aluminum on the graph in the first page, inferring it's designed for aluminum. A Senior Product Support Specialist also confirmed its fine to use. Also, it mentions no where on the product or website that its not to be used.

    The Permatex Anaerobic Flange Sealant tube does not mention what metals it can be used on. There is no mention to NOT use it on aluminum. The Permatex website does not mention this either. The Amazon product description does not mention this either. Are you sure you cannot use this on aluminum? What is correct?

    Could have been a great video, but lacked clarity and part numbers. At 2:00 mark he mentions a gasket maker, with a picture of the tube......and no part number. Adding some defined margins in the video between products, with clear explanations of what specific sealer you're talking about would be very helpful. Time for a do-over.

    so no mention of the solvent required to activate the metal before this stuff cures...........and I just put a gearbox back in a car without that solvent. OK I should have known better. What the hell is active metal?? Obviously it is describing something I never heard of. This video mentions the damn active metal........... Permatex product line is so confusing. How about a comprehensive description of each product in one place!!! And by the way. I am in Finland. I do not speak Finnish/Estonian/Swedish/Norgwegian/Danish I rely on the internet and access to English language information to know how to use these products.

      Panic over! The activator just speeds up the cure. Hopefully Permatex are right here: www.permatex.com/products/thread-compounds/activators/permatex-surface-prep-activator-for-anaerobics/ Obviously Permatex need to clean up their presentation of information. Since when did anaerobic mean "cures in the absence of air **and** the presence of 'active metals'" !!

    I'm thinking that for my GM 3.6L V6 aluminum block the Gasket Maker (not Flange Sealant) is the stuff to use for the water pump and thermostat housing. I think the RTV stuff is not the best for the machined surfaces as the vid says. Anyone know if I'm wrong? This video is more confusing than it needs to be.

    Very strange that the recommended Permatex 24163 Surface Prep Activator for Anaerobic sealant is not mentioned. It literally says in the directions on the tube and package of Your anaerobic Sealants to use this activator!!!??? This omission seems like it's in direct opposition to selling a necessary part when using your product. Yes, I understand that it works without it (much slower cure - 50% slower) but still, why not mention it?

    the instructions on the packaging of the 51817 gasket maker describe how you can use it as a gasket-dressing. but in this video they say never to use anaerobic gasket maker to dress gaskets. what is the truth?

    I'm more confused than before I watched this video. Advice suggesting that you shouldn't use it as a dressing contradicts the manufacturer's instructions and so far this is the only place that I've seen claiming that you shouldn't use the flange sealant on aluminum, only the gasket maker. Wish that you would have elaborated on that a bit more, including a mention of whether or not the high temp flange sealant would work on aluminum... Still am very confused as to what the difference between the flange sealant and gasket maker is and which is proper for my application (gasketless oil pump on a Subaru WRX - EJ25)

    • @permatexvideos
      @permatexvideos  Před 5 lety

      Hi Matthew!
      The first thing would be to answer your real question. Permatex Ultra Grey RTV Silicone (Item # 82194) is the most recommended product for an oil pump application on a Subaru.
      Anaerobic Gasket Maker is a non-corrosive neutral cure formulation hence why it is recommended for soft alloy (cast aluminum) applications.
      Anaerobic Flange Sealant is an acrylic acid based formulation recommended for dense alloys such as steel or cast iron.

    • @Currancchs
      @Currancchs Před 5 lety

      Thanks so much for the prompt reply and great information! Just out of curiosity though, why is the anaerobic gasket maker not recommended for the oil pump to block interface? Seems like the reduced risk of oil passage clogging would make this a great application for the anaerobic gasket maker...
      P.s. Really enjoy using your products, have had great luck with them in the past!

    • @permatexvideos
      @permatexvideos  Před 5 lety

      Think of it this way - the era of engineering when this motor was created relied heavily on silicone product such as Ultra Grey to seal pump to block connections (oil pump specifically).
      There should never be a concern of blocking oil passages ever. If the correct size bead of silicone is applied to one of the mating surfaces, assembled and the product allowed to cure for 24 hours its simply an impossibility.

    • @Currancchs
      @Currancchs Před 5 lety

      I completely agree that if the correct size bead is applied that there should be no issues, just looking for a bit of extra insurance and figured that the higher price of the anaerobics was their only downside, and that's a price that I'm willing to pay as someone who doesn't do this sort of work professionally, where the higher cost might add up over time. Thank you very much for the response.
      P.s. - Is this the correct amount to use (sarcasm very much intended)? - czcams.com/video/_qdykc8nMzA/video.html

      permatexvideos hi, where on the product does it state not for use on aluminum? I used this high temp anaerobic flange sealant on a Mercedes GL 320 transfer case cover ( not a steel material, some type of light weight casting) and now I watched this video afterwards only to see and read your comments that this product is not for use on aluminum?
      Am I going to have transmission fluid leaking between the cover now? Will this product be corrosive to the casting which would cause leaking and transfer case failure?
