    Me: I don't like horror games that revolve around hiding from monsters.
    Every 2nd commenter: Why isn't Alien: Isolation on here?!?!?
    🙃

    • @wrathfultick
      @wrathfultick Před rokem +8

      But then you have games like SOMA, Clock Tower, and the Resident Evil games which often involve avoiding creatures that are much more powerful than you. Obviously it's nobody's business but yours what kind of games you play and enjoy, but I don't think the disconnect is that hard to understand.

      Must be that giant "take a hint" sign, and give Alien Isolation a chance. For the first 2 hours I found the game slow and boring, but atmosphere was great so i stuck with it. And then it got me to replay again it on hardest difficulty + DLCs, something that after 30+ years of gaming rarely happens with me. Maybe it would be like Castlevania SOTN magic.

      Alien isolation isn’t even the scariest aliens game tho. I’ll never forget the day I loaded up Alien colonial marines. That was the day I lost all hope in the existence of a god and my trust in humanity was forever tarnished.

    I was so pumped for PARASITE EVE in 1998, Still remember picking it up on release day. I got a PSone for Christmas the year before for Final Fantasy 7, and Resident Evil was the 2nd game I picked up and it blew my mind. When I saw Square Soft was doing a game rooted in survival horror, I was over the moon. That opening cutscene with tears on the face of a frowning Statue of Liberty still gives me all the feels.

    I really appreciate the way Soma implemented the "safe" mode, because I would have never experienced it without that. Both because I'm a coward and because I too hate the gameplay loop of constantly hiding from unbeatable monsters. It allowed me to focus on the incredible story and atmosphere and ended up being one of my favorite games for it. Loved the video, I'm excited to give The Cat Lady a try this coming spooky season!

    • @Cannotbetamed1

      Thank the modding community. A year before they added safe mode, there was the Wuss Mod. Developers were able to see the concept in action, and smooth out the rough patches for the official version. I fully support this practice, because console players lack access to mods. It's a great way to enrich their gaming experience.

    I remember the first game to scare the shxt out of me was : The 7th guest on PC MS DOS.
    It was one of the first Cd Rom games I got and the atmosphere was so spooky. It's a first person inquiry game in a manor where strange things occured. You have to solve some creepy puzzle games to get your way. As i type these words, I still have goosebumps just by thinking about this evil game. the low res FMV ghosts appearances blended in nice 3D backgrounds and the eerie soundtrack was quite amazing. You really have to check out this one !

    Horror, in my opinion, has the best atmospheres in any genre of any medium. Some of my personal favorite horror games that didn’t make your list would definitely include Resident Evil 2 Remake, Alien: Isolation, Dead Space 2, Tormented Souls, The Evil Within 2, and Half Life: Alyx. My honorable mention is the usually criminally underrated The Order 1886. For me, the atmosphere in some parts of the game, especially the underground subway sequence, are very well done even if the overall game isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Keep up the great work on the videos. Hope you have a great month of spooky games to play 🎮🧟‍♂️👻🎃🧛🏻

    Another great ranking video Pam! I am not a big fan of horror games, but one that stuck with me over the years is the original Alone In The Dark. The first hour or so of Resident Evil 7 in VR is the scariest experience I've had with any game. It gets a bit less scary once you start to get a handle on things and find some save rooms, but the tension never completely lets up either.
    Silent Hill 1 is also ridiculously scary despite the more primitive graphics.
    Doom 3 in VR (on PSVR) is so much more effective than the original version. The pacing, level design, monster closets, jump scares, etc. all work so much better in VR. Even on Easy difficulty I found it incredibly effective and creepy throughout.
    Those are probably my top 3.

    Great video, Pam. It was interesting to see where you ranked some of those games.
    For me the scariest games in my top 5 are System Shock 2, Stalker series, Clive Barkers Undying, Resident evil and Dead Space.
    System Shock 2 is old but it was much scarier than Bioshock and the games like Prey. Those games exist because of system shock 1&2.

    Thanks for this overview, I've been curious about a lot of these games and your commentary has given me a better idea of what it will be like to play them. I've been eager to check out the Fatal Frame games and it's nice to know that they're worth playing. My favorite horror game is System Shock 2, there is something about being stuck on a spaceship with mutating crew members being overtaken by an alien parasite and having an AI with ulterior motives as your only help that has stuck with me over the years.

    Dying Light was a jumping game that had the jump button assigned to a bumper instead of one of the face buttons with no options to change that. Also, the online events were on by default, and it turns back on every time you power off the game, AND the game skips the main menu, just loading your last save instantly when you power it on, but you could only turn off the online events from the main menu, so you have to start the game, wait for it to load, which takes a minute, pause, quit to menu, find the option in the menus to turn off online events, then finally start playing, every single time. When I first started playing there was an online event going on that made a bunch of the fast scary zombies spawn during the day, and I could kill maybe a couple before all my weapons broke cause I literally just started the game, and all I could do was run away. I had to resort to looking up why I was so bad at the game before I found out it was because of an online event. Hot doo doo garabagé

    This was a particularly fun video to watch. Enjoyed your ranking with brief summaries to explain why each game has the ranking it gets. I'd be curious to see you include Alien: Isolation. It is another run & hide kind of game, which I know isn't a play mechanic that you enjoy (not really my favorite either), but it does have some crafting mechanics so you can build things to distract the alien, great atmosphere, and I feel like it's one of the better examples I've seen of a game using one main creature hunting you throughout the whole game.

    A person's fears can be quite enlightening as to who they are. Thank you for sharing yours with us. It's encouraging to know there are things that really scare you too. But radio with scary noises? Surprising. 😄 I think calling Metro a horror game is pushing it though. To me a key element of horror is a sense of helplessness, whether it applies to myself, to someone I am watching, or an implied victim long gone. Metro has a bit of the third kind, but Artyom is so strong in the games that I was never scared. Combine helplessness with the unknown, that is the ultimate scare for me. Take away the helplessness, and we are left with a delightful treat.
    Part of me wishes you left out some of the less discussed games to have more time for the ones that left a stronger impression on you, good or bad. Another part is glad you didn't because I might not have known to give some of these games a second look. There is just no pleasing some people. Sorry. I don't know where I was going with this.

    Red Candle, the developer who made Detention, made another game called Devotion. It's got a first person POV, so pretty different gameplay, but it has the same disturbing quality, and takes a much heavier emotional toll. If you wanted more of that stick with you horror, more of a lurking dread than anything close to jump scares, it's pretty fantastic.

    S rank for soundtrack and host for the video. The Cat Lady had the most amazing sound design. Surprised that I didn’t see either of the siren games from the PS2 era that had that weird second person sight jacking mechanic. They definitely had a very unsettling atmosphere. Haunting ground, the spiritual successor to clock tower, with a late PS2 Capcom horror title that also serves mansion. The dog companion AI was expertly implemented for the time and it would make an incredible remake with modern technology.

    Nice ranking. I think the first game to truly scare me was Amnesia The Dark Decent. Before that I got some lite scares with the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill (which I love but more as action/puzzle games) but Amnesia was the first game that made me feel scared to the point I had to take breaks. Nowadays I find it hard to be truly scared in a video game, until I played Outer Wilds. Without being a horror game, it just gave me such a feeling of dread and like existential and cosmic horror that I have never experienced. I feel like horror games as a whole are not truly scary, they're just filled with dark and spooky imagery and then jump scare you. A truly horror experience for me at my age now, is one that delves into deeper and existential territory, nothing that has to do with demons, ghosts, zombies, etc.

    • @LarixusSnydes
      @LarixusSnydes Před rokem

      Interesting point you make there, danigar: It's the fear of the unknown that gets under your skin and has a maintained tension that does not let up. For some reason, a non-horror carries that tension as well, Kairo does that for me. I don't know why.

    • @danigar
      @danigar Před rokem

      @@LarixusSnydes Exactly it's the fear of the unknown that has that effect, and if you combine it with space then that's a scary combo for me. I feel like a non-horror can convey this feeling better because you don't expect it, whereas a regular horror game just tries to scare you and spook you as much as it can so I kinda become desensitized after a while.

    It feels wrong that the pastiche overdone clone-of-PT layers of fear is on the same tear as detention, last door and a couple resident evil games... I recommend also the video about Bloober team by Bobvids to get a couple reasons behind the medium being so bad despite the big budget.

    Fatal Frame has bothered me because they call a camera a "camera obscura" which is a different thing entirely. A camera obscura was used in the renaissance to aid in painting and drawing. No film is involved; it's basically just a lens on a box that projects an image on a frosted glass plate so it can be traced by the artist. Sure, it's a cool sounding term...But it's not a camera by our definition.

I personally am a huge fan of the intersection between sci-fi and horror, and consider my own "holy trinity" to be Dead Space, Soma and Alien: Isolation (hoping Callisto Protocol will be good enough to get added and make it a quartet!) I recognize that whenever you make a list people pop in with 'how dare you leave such-and-such off the list!' but I have to ask, why no Alien: Isolation? Not a fan? Haven't played it yet? If not, I do highly recommend it!

      @@Cannotbetamed1 The alien can't be killed, so one way of dealing with that is hiding from it, sure. But to say it's a game about "hiding from the alien" is pretty reductive - it's like saying Elden Ring is a game about dying a lot of times. That will probably happen, but it's hardly what the game is about.

    Awesome list! there's a lot for me to play here, and I love it! I think the only one (of the ones I have played) that I disagree with is doki doki, but maybe because I played with a girlfriend at the time, and playing any game with someone is always fun. More because we read it out loud, we did voices, comments, and stuff, and that adds a lot to it.
    And the games that I think you should play are:
    1. Outlast - the first one only, the second one I didn't like it
    2. I'm on observation duty - not really super scary but I think it's really fun and interesting, and also way better with friends.

    Improvements in graphics over the years have helped horror games greatly, since horror effects rely on a lot of lighting and shadow effects, which newer-gen games are much better at. The recent trailer for Resident Evil 4 is a good example. I compared the remake side by side with the original and noticed the tons of absolutely pitch black (and realistic-looking) shadows that the original game couldn't show. In the original RE4 and old-gen games like it, shadows usually looked grey and hardly convincing. And I recall some old games even used fake painted-on black shadows (Lol!).

    Have you played Fatal Frame - Maiden of Black Water? I noticed you ranked the 2nd game in the franchise highly.

    One of the reasons PT is so good, is that it was secretly made by Hideo Kojima as a promo. There are actually easter eggs from it in Metal Gear Solid V (radios in Russian bases in Afghanistan will play sound bytes from the radio broadcasts from PT).
