    17:10 = The Legend of Dragoon was a PS1 game I constantly saw while in Blockbuster many times growing up. But I never rented it since I hardly rented games back in the day, mostly being games. But I always eyed that game wanting to try it out one day.
    Eventually, I got my chance with it after college and played a little bit of it. I’ve only played it briefly for four minutes, but I’ll make sure to play through it at one point. It’s a very unique game that deserves some attention! Glad to see you have it in your collection and that you consider it one of your favorites, Pam! 👍👍

  • @ThomasMatthewByrne
    @ThomasMatthewByrne Před 5 lety +1

    Hi Pam. Great video. The PS1 can be hard to revisit on modern displays due to graphical fidelity, lag, and up-scaling artifacts. I would definitely recommend investing in an old 14” CRT with a SCART socket (I know S-Video was the high standard in North America during the analogue era but really, RGB is the only way to go) as you will get the clearest picture and not have to deal with lag and timing issues in games like Um Jammer Lammy. Also, I’d recommend that you check out Ridge Racer Type 4 as it’s fairly unique in that it combines story-based elements with excellent racing/drift mechanics. Its visuals are unique for driving games at the time as it employs a rich in-game palette and the soundtrack is probably the best in the series with lots of light pop and jazz that can create an oddly serene mood as you play.

    21:17 As a huge fan of that original Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee I can highly recommend it although it's harder than the remake. Despite the pixelated PS1 screen, it actually has better graphics than the remake because they were all pre-rendered like film quality cgi at the time. The visuals and sounds and story cutscenes were so immersive. The sequel Abe's Exoddus also has the same gameplay and visuals although they also remade that one

    Wow. I thought I was the only one foreign to the idea of memory cards when they got a PS1. Before that, I had only played games on the NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD and the Sega Saturn (the games I had I felt didn't need me to have the memory cartridges that I only found out about a decade or so after the Saturn was discontinued and that that was why there was a slot above the disc tray), so the notion of saving didn't take off on me right away (the only times I did save games was when I didn't consciously know I did like Super Mario World and virtually my entire N64 collection except Ocarina of Time but that's only because I sucked at it) because I was so used to only having a whole day to beat a game (and it only started to dawn on me to consider abandoning that way of thinking when my grandpa bought me Final Fantasy VII and X for my ninth birthday.) Seriously, I remembered spending a whole day to unlock everything there was in Tekken 3. It's nice to know I wasn't the only stranger in a strange land.

    So much good stuff in your PS1 library! Rayman was one of the handful of PS games I traded away, because I got frustrated with it. It didn't play enough like the platformers I was used to in the 8 and 16-bit era, and some of the jumps felt off to me, so it didn't click. I've picked it up again recently though. I would encourage you to give Lunar a try, though I can safely say that, despite my love for the original, the sequel is better. Still, it's a fun and heartwarming story, and the whole package is great. Awesome soundtrack, fun characters, good voice acting, and a cute story. Parasite Eve! Love that game. Symphony of the Night is another one I'd say give another chance. The soundtrack alone makes that game worth playing, but honestly, the light RPG elements and other accouterments really help elevate that game. Vandal Hearts is actually really good, and has a good soundtrack. We played it last February for RF Gen, and it was my first SRPG experience. I really enjoyed it. I remember renting Fear Effect, and while the tank controls didn't bother me, I had a hard time figuring out what to do. That's one I want to track down, along with its sequel, and go back to at some point.

It's actually ported REALLY well to the controller, and even though you have to remember some weird button combinations, it's so good that I never felt "oh man, I'd much rather have a mouse and keyboard right now". Cool collection! I had a lot of fun during the PS1 time period. Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Gran Turismo, and Xenogears were some of my favorite games. Not going to spoil anything but I think you will like Xenogears once you start getting into the story. It has one of the best story lines/characters of any RPG I've played imo. Though due to some business issues and time pressures, many fans believe the game was rushed and did not feel as polished as it should of been but a great game regardless. An honorable mention here would be the (Twisted Metal) series and the (Tekken) series as well. You've just earned a sub! Nice video and keep up the great content.

    Civ 2 played very well on Playstation but it wasn't the first on console. The first Civilization was released along the way on the Super Nintendo. That was where I first found Civilization. Also, if you like strategy games have you ever played Carnage Heart. Excellent game ported to Playstation that played very well and received almost no attention. Among the other great games that arrived on the PS were the 2 Suikoden games, the entire Legacy of Kain games (one of the greatest forgotten series out there), the Resident Evil and Tomb Raider games. Lastly, I will point out that the improvement from one generation to another for 16 bit (Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis) to 32 bit Playstation was probably the greatest and most impressive of all time. I was there when consoles and/or computer gaming first came out and the jump from the pixel sprites to the 32 bit comparitively real life looking characters brought me back into gaming at a time when I was getting bored, or perhaps jaded. And not only for system power but also ushered in the time when you disn't always have to play as a good guy, which you know holding Tecmo's Deception. Nice video, enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

      It's inferior to the sega CD version. I was a huge fan of the original and was stoked for this to come out. I bought it, played through the entire thing and it was terribly underwhelming. It lost practically all of the charm from the original version.

    • @DementedDistraction
      @DementedDistraction Před 5 lety +1

      @@Vsinger82 I wouldn't say inferior...they both have their fair share of improvements and shortcomings when compared to the other.
      I think it's very much one of those things where if you played the Sega CD version first, SSSC will always fall short in your eyes and vice-versa.
      If I had to recommend a version to someone who's played neither, I would probably tell them to play Silver Star Story complete.
      It has a level of cosmetic and technical polish, along with a few game play tweaks which I think make it a more enjoyable experience overall.

    • @Vsinger82
      @Vsinger82 Před 5 lety

      DementedDistraction that’s fine, you can say whatever you like. I stick by my stance that it is far and away inferior. Just because a game has “graphical polish” does not make it a better gameplay experience. The art style and sprites were completely changed and I thought the original was way more appealing. They also added a bunch of padding, voice acting and cutscenes that made the story drag. I found the rehash to be shell of its former glory.

    • @DementedDistraction
      @DementedDistraction Před 5 lety

      @@Vsinger82 By all means, stick by your stance - convictions are a good thing.
      However, boiling down my statement to simply isolate part of what I said, and then referencing it as the sum of my intent is a rather misguided basis upon which to pin a rebuttal.
      Your latter points are simply subjective conjecture - and again, convictions are good, but to completely dismiss the Playstation version of the game despite its improvements to the original (while accounting for its flaws) subverts any attempt at a balanced comparison of the two.

    • @Vsinger82
      @Vsinger82 Před 5 lety

      @DementedDistraction. dismissing the PlayStation version would be simply not playing it, which I did in it’s entirety. These improvements that you are noting are subjective to the player so I’m not disagreeing with you; I just don’t find them to be improvements. My opinion is that They took a game that was charming and unique and turned it into a generic hodgepodge that (to me) did not stand out in a sea of ps1 RPGs. I’m not going to sit here and say my nostalgia doesn’t play a factor in that.
