- A look at D.G. Chichester's game-changing comic book arc "Last Rites" that saw Daredevil finally defeat The Kingpin from Daredevil issues #297-#300, with an analysis of its storytelling style, how it counters "Born Again," "Gang War," and Ann Nocenti's run, and its long-term effects on Daredevil comics.

Hi. You forgot to include your previous video in Daredevil playlist. Please fix
"Bing-bong, Kingpin's done" lmao. Matt is from NYC confirmed!
Daredevil being a Sidetalk fan is canon to me now
Bullseye on the corner screaming Fuck Ya Life.
I LITERALLY stopped the video when he said "BING-BONG"
We got DareDevil in the silky on union square.
Daredevil breaks through the window shouting FUKYALIFE with his timbos on 😂😂😂
The image of daredevil forgiving a broken down kingpin is the image I most remember of the last rites
Made the whole story worth it.
@@johnathonhaney8291 for the longest time, I thought I was the only one who felt like that because I had trouble trying to find this and it was overstocked and overpriced. Glad people like this story apparently. Im sure Fisk fans are still whining lmao
Yeah, issue #297 was a pretty hot buy at that time. The ending with Typhoid Mary too , that was brutal.
Last Rites is probably one of my absolute favorite DD comic stories. A perfect sequel to Born Again.
@Stained Class v01 for the longest time, I thought I was the only one who felt like that because I had trouble trying to find this and it was overstocked and overpriced. Glad people like this story apparently.
I'm actually fond of Last Rites,my first Daredevil story. Rushed, yes, but it's also a pretty compelling disintegration of a man who started with total control. Vanessa haunts him like a living ghost, the one thing he will always want but will stay out of his reach.
And Typhoid Mary wasn't made "sane" any more than Fisk suffered "bad luck" (the latter being more bad research). As a DID sufferer, she reverted to her "Mary" alter while Matt made sure she got institutionalized before the "Typhoid" alter could pop back out. It was removing the queen piece from the chessboard, exposing the Kingpin to checkmate.
Kingpin really developed as a character when Miller brought him into the pages of Daredevil.
I will say, there were some interesting elements to the character established during the original Stan Lee/John Romita stories in Spider-Man, specifically in regards to the Kingpin's family life. It's kind of surprising Miller never made use of Fisk's son, Richard.
@@ThePinkMan Good point. It would be interesting to see.
Chichester never got a fair shake he deserved. Fall of the Kingpin is legit the best DD story done by anyone not Frank Miller, and the editorial interference in the rest of his run poisoned the well.Last Rites is excellent! It’s a fantastic sequel/follow up to Born Again. I don’t understand why it’s not more widely acclaimed like other arcs. Chichester showed an apt understanding of Matt and all of his rogues gallery, and Lee Weeks draws in a style that is so dynamic, but also feels like an echo of Mazzuchelli’s style. Easily one of my favorite DD stories, and I highly recommend it.
What you said times 1000. It was my first Daredevil story and easily the best of Chichester's run. The premise of it is why it still works for me: after this many years of threats, it comes time to make good on them. Also, the attempted suitcase assassination of a baseball-loving NYC DA by Chinese triads? That was based on a true story, though they changed the name from "Palmer" to "Malper" for the comic.
@@johnathonhaney8291
The fact that Palmer became "Malper" is deeply funny to me. God, I love comics.
It was based on a true story?
@@matthewschwartz6607 Yes, minus the costumes, the attempted suitcase hit WAS based on a true story.
I think one of the things that does work about certain supervillains never truly going away is that it’s symbolic of real life. In reality, evil will never truly be defeated because it exists in the heart of every human being. Conversely, good will never truly be defeated either. The two will remain locked in struggle, both internally and externally. Daredevil and the Kingpin will always fight for dominance, just as the good and evil in us all. We just have to keep working to try and win as many victories for good as we can.
@Magnus Prime Thats fair. But it is satisfying to seeing a never fleeting evil getting ridiculed for the fun of it.
The story may be flawed but I still love it. Seeing Kingpin defeated (both physically and emotionally) was satisfying, even if it was only temporary. And yet despite all the awful things he did, I cannot help but feel a little bad for Wilson.
He is the type of villain you love to hate and hate to love
@Zemo X2 for the longest time, I thought I was the only one who felt like that because I had trouble trying to find this and it was overstocked and overpriced. Glad people like this story apparently. Im sure Fisk fans are still whining lmao
I've always valued this story as being a perfect place to stop on volume 1. It felt like this answer to Touch of Typhoid and Born Again, and like it served the important purpose of showing Fisk can bleed. I'm not too familiar with 301-380, but it always seems like since Last Rites, Fisk was far more capable of being taken down than he ever was before. As much of a downward spiral as volume 2 was for Matt, it was a rollercoaster for Fisk, with many rises and falls contained across it. He got New York back, but he never really had the same stability again after Last Rites.
There's a moment at the end I've always found cool, where Matt's standing in his new office, clad in a white suit, where the image of Fisk appears before him covered in red. Its kind of questionable why this happens or what Matt's really perceiving, but it felt like this really cool visualization of how their circumstances have essentially flipped.
I always saw that last scene as Matt reminding himself that he is just as responsible for his life going off-track as Fisk himself.
I'm afraid that the finale of Darecember might prank us all by being Matt's essay on The Defenders instead of Daredevil Season 3.
I mean, it would be fun to see him tear that series a new one. DD S2 was the appetizer in a way lol.
Be afraid, be very afraid!
@@MattDraper NOOOOOO
I don't think I can pick a favorite out of all the DD videos that you've done but I constantly re-watch them all because of how engaging they are. I swear you can feel your love and reverence for this character and these storylines through the screen.
Merry Christmas, Mr. Draper.
When I read this, I was genuinely impressed because when a superhero had a supervillain that had a positive public image, the hero wasn't allowed to take them down. It's why for decades Superman and Spider-Man weren't allow to really do anything about Lex Luthor and Norman Osborn despite them constantly doing awful things every other month. I know Jeph Loeb and Mark Millar have their critics but at least they ended that cycle.
“Bing-Bong” as a life long New Yorker and unfortunately a life long Knicks fan, that cracked me up. Great episode as always, man.
Omg !! Thank you so much !! I have been hoping someone would’ve make a video of this comic arc for years !! It’s not only a hidden gem in storytelling but a perfect sequel to Born Again. A times i feel sorry and joy seeing Fisk go through his owl fall of grace .
Cover the Swashbuckling years of Daredevil.
Interesting timing for this vid to be posted on the same day the Kingpin makes his official MCU debut.
Quite...and I suspect we also saw Vanessa today as well. A hint: it wasn't Kate's mom.
Damn I’d love to hear your Elektra: Assassin commentary. That story is so damn good and the art is amazing. And I had never heard of this particular DD story but maybe I’ll read it once I get around to Nocenti’s run
Super jazzed that you tackled Last Rites. These were my first four issues of Daredevil, and it was love at first read! Sure, I knew DD and Fisk from reading Spidey, but this opened my eyes to a whole other side of Marvel's Big Apple! Of course I would eventually read Miller and Nocenti, but Chichester put that first score on my heart for this character. And don't get me started on Lee Weeks' pencils!
Also... I'm totally the type of uncultured swine who prefers Maltese over Wesley. 😈🙃
8:43 Vanessa is Fisk's weakness. In one comic other crime bosses took her hostage to set a trap for Kingpin which led to her wandering into the sewers. And in the Netflix show her being poisoned makes him lose it and kill Leland.
A fact that Chichester used to full effect in Last Rites while having her be completely offscreen. Here, it's the ghost of her memory that undoes Fisk.
I normally don't go in for Dare Devil stuff. I couldn't tell you exactly why. I suppose in some aspects he doesn't seem particularly heroic to me. But gosh I get excited for these videos Matt. Especially after the last episode
I get that but in some ways that's part of the appeal. I would say he is most heroic in mark waids daredevil run (my favorite). However in other stories he can definitely screw up and make legitimately selfish choices. Some writers take ut to far IMO. However The fun of reading daredevil comes from seeing him triumph over his moral failings and in how the series deconstructs aspects of superhero comics in cool and interesting ways, such as violence and how it is portayed. I have problems with zdarsky's run but he just wrote a big story commenting on how broken America's prison system is and how superheroes don't do much to address the root causes of real crime. If anything throwing a criminal in prison will likely make them MORE violent and dangerous because of the violent and dehumanizing environment they are forced to live in. That's an interesting concept to wrestle with. If daredevil isn't helping reform and of the criminals he puts away then what is he really accomplishing in the grand scheme of things?
Perfect day to post this considering *spoilers for Hawkeye*
Kingpin's return to the MCU
"Fall from grace" was my first DD comic, I truly love it. Even when it doesn´t make any sense. But I love the art of Scott MCDaniel, you can really see him improving and trying a new art style as pages go by. I believe you can see his "old" style and the new one in 319, the evolution of his art in 320 (THAT final splash page... amazing!) and its truest form starting with 321.
I've had the epic collection of this arc sitting on my shelf for months and haven't cracked it open. I guess I should do that...
It honestly wasn’t my favorite story, but it was gratifying to see Matt finally get back at the Kingpin.
Why isn’t it well received? @Carlito Glichrist
It just didn’t have the weight that the story needed I think. Plus it came after Ann Nocenti’s run which was pretty all over the place in terms of story and many people might have fallen off of Daredevil by this point.
@@carlitogilchrist1939 what weight could it have used?
Really well done. Appreciate such a thoughtful retrospective and analysis - some ideas objectively spot on, some subjectively interesting. My only real quibble: it’s “chai” not “chih”. ;-) Thank you for including me in Darecember!
Chicesters best story and a great bookend to Born Again! Pls do the Soule run, my omnibus of that is coming in the mail.
Ive been waiting a long time for this video, i collected this whole arc i love it.
Will we see a video on the Daredevil Punisher rivalry?
This is a video I really want to do, but it won't be in this year's Darecember.
@@MattDraper fair enough.
Great essay! I appreciate much of Chichester's work and I think it's great how you elevate his story by including it your essay-collection. Much of His later stuff siffror from 90's hangups bit The can be enjoyable.
And gosh how good was Lee Weeks so early in his career!
Earlier this year I was in my local comic shop and picked up this limited series in a 4-issue bundle. The escalation from 297-300 was so satisfying. The pacing honestly felt slow to me at first, but it gradually got faster and faster the closer Matt got to putting Fisk away. By 300, it really was just a mad-dash/street brawl. And having Peter as one of the on-lookers, egging Daredevil on was a wonderful touch
@C 3 what do you think Born Again?
R.i.p. Michael Clarke Duncan
That was an amazing video! I would love to see your take on season 3 of the tv show!
Semi off topic here.
I’m surprised no one has done a Christmas Carol story with Daredevil. I can see it now;
Matt - Scrooge
Stick - Jacob Marley
Jack Murdock - Ghost of Christmas Past
Karen Page - Ghost of Christmas Present
Elektra - Ghost of Christmas Future
You've already got this one written, haven't you? If not, what are you waiting for?
@@johnathonhaney8291 I’m not exactly a professional writer, I’m more of an ideas man.
@@comixproviderftw_02 Oh, really? Speaking as an actual professional writer, I say you should write this down, work it out. You might find you have more of a taste for it than you realize.
Matt, your videos actually got me to start reading Daredevil!
Thanks for the Daredevil content Matt. Much ❤ as always
That Midnight “Night Hawk” song for the intro is classic!! Nice use!
Not Matt doing another awesome Daredevil video that’s reminded me of DD comics I need to still read and starting it off with Nighthawks 😩
(One of the best Midnight songs)
All of the inversions, good call. I never noticed ALL of them!
Honestly now the kingpins been beat so many times it takes away how threatening an opponent he is but back then it meant something.
It was his first major defeat since the Miller redefinition, which is why Last Rites meant something. Hopefully, Devil's Reign will reestablish his threat level.
I was so happy with this storyline! I admit to feeling joy when DD knocks Kingpin down several pegs.
Watching Matt play the same game Fisk did on him for once was a joy, wasn't it?
@@johnathonhaney8291 Yes, it was.
The gift that keeps on giving. Thank you for Daredevil December.
This is one of the best dd stories out there.
incredible timing
What a day to drop this vid
Good timing!
Happy Dare-cember!
Chichester's take on Matt is my favorite.
I haven't read Last Rites, but i'm tempted to. It's not a permanent victory, but reading DD taking down Kingpin sounds very appetizing to me. And while resetting the status quo is most of the time annoying, because it's almost a way to say that nothing mattered, with Chichester's run, it's more of a way of Matt getting payback over all the people who screwed him. A warped version of the past stories told.
Get this story...Last Rites remains my favorite Daredevil story to this day for the catharsis.
@@johnathonhaney8291 does the writing hold up well? How does it compare to Born Again?
I might have this 1st print in my boxes.. nice
Great review! Last Rites has Lee Weeks &Al Williamson beautiful artwork to carry a story that was loooong in getting back to Murdock status que! Miller &Nocenti left big shoes to fill! I took a break after 300,occasionally looking at the book! Hated that new IMAGE driven costume, red, white and Blue with clunky metal wristbands ? Why!? Scott McDaniel got the blame for editorial lame choices! Scott is excellent artist, especially later on Nightwing! DD /Marvel Knights was definitely a step in the right direction! Thanks!
This is my favorite Daredevil story easily.
Seeing Matt not suffering and taking down Kingpin is so satisfying.
I love this one so much.
@John G. How is this compared to Born Again? Why is this one not as popular?
I'm glad this story was included in the final Epic Collection wrapping up Nocenti's run because otherwise I'd probably never have read it. Watching Fisk running around town in desperation was a beautiful sight.
Yeah, that last mad dash for a vindication that's not coming stays in the mind long after. Fisk keeps repeating the lie Matt fed like a prayer, as if saying it enough would make it the truth. It's a total meltdown that ultimately breaks him, even more so than everything else he lost.
@Kalle Vilenius what epic collection specifically?
@@Seasonal-Shadow_4674 Volume 15, also called Last Rites
i am glad at least there is a story were Daredevil got a definitive happy ending, even if Fisk returned
I really like Last Rites, but maybe it's because of nostalgia. Who knows..?
I would love a video about J.M. DeMatteis's "conclusion" for Chichester's run: Inferno/Purgatorio/Paradiso (Daredevil #344 to #350).
@Thiago Brancatelli I thought people didn’t like it cause they didn’t want to see the villain suffer
It’s amazing how impactful one THICC BOI can be.
What is the song playing at 7:58?
And yet...
I still can't see the king pin as anyone's villain but Spider-Mans. Thanks a lot Spider-Man: TAS and smooth voiced king pin.
I see him as an enemy of all the street level heroes.
Are you gonna do a video about Daredevil S3 this month? (Loving this month’s videos my dude 😁)
Thanks! You'll find out very soon.
I hope we see a Daredevil Season 3 review before the month is out
My first-ever Daredevil comics were when Matt was amnesiac and Bullseye was running around in the Daredevil suit. But this was the next story I read after those, so in a sense, it's my first "real" DD story. I loved it at the time, but I really can't remember when I last revisited it. I'm curious now how it'll hold up for me after going back and reading Miller/Nocenti, and in light of now having read Bendis/Brubaker/Waid, etc.
I worked out a outline for a theoretical season of the show after season 2 but before 3 that adapted Born Again and Last Rites, I am glad cause I might not have read it otherwise.
Matt we need you to cover everything, especially the entire Marvel Knights Daredevil run
Is this collected in a hardback or tpb?
Dare-cember is really fun and amazing.
Would really love to see you do a vieo on Charles Soule's run on Daredevil. Or are you done with Daredevil videos?
Matt broke down his enemy. Big time. It was done to easy. Finally beat the Kingpin. Justice was served. They both need each other. Kknpin will never not have power

you gotta do a video on guardian devil next year!
I just finished daredevil epic collection vol15
Do you plan on doing a video on Daredevil Season 3?
How cute, since its charlie coxs birthday.
Ahhhh Satisfaction at its finest
I read DD all through this era, starting with issue 290. After this story the book was a gruelling slog. So next do Fall From Grace, I dare you.
Are you ever going to cover Love And War?
hey Matt, I would love if you talked more about the X-Men!
Go you one better...talk about X-Men Grand Design, a comprehensive and ambitious condensing of thirty years of X-Men continuity into one cohesive storyline over three volumes.
Can you make a video about the Dynamic between Daredevil and Spider-Man or Black Widow?
14:00 At least in the Green Goblin's case there can and have been more than one.
I love the Kingoin Daredevil dynamic and love that hes a treat to all nyc based heros but he will always be a spiderman villain to me with TAS being one of my favorite shows ever
I love daredevil
Mhm, Matt posts this video on the same day as Hawkeye episode 5. (Those who’ve seen it know what I’m talking about). Coincidence, I think not!
A fantastic little coincidence
You got to do the batman comic called Batman imposter
Awesome video I bet the finale is shadowland is it
Gonna have to wait and see!
The run and start was a good palet cleanser for Nocenti's run. I love Romita Jr's work on Daredevil but Nocenti was such a clumsy and pretentious but also disjointed writer. The story with Bullseye is ridiculous. She's much better on the Longshot mini. But Chicesters run loses steam shortly after this story in fairness, it's not terrible though.
I was honestly surprised Matt didn’t kick the shit out of kingpin during born again as it seemed like that was it was leading to.
Why do the expected when you can do something that makes your audience think?
@@johnathonhaney8291 that storyline just kind of ended without a resolution. Daredevil got better and so did Karen but cap found out about the conspiracy involving kingpin and then it just ended
Dude, it's Chitch - ester, like the English town
"having sex with her until she's sane again. I didn't realize that's how mental disorders work"
Classic hysteria, Mr. Draper
Yeah, he was off on that one. Typhoid Mary is your classic DID sufferer, "Typhoid" being one of her alters (the violent Matt seduces) and "Mary" (the meek one who's there when she gets taken away) being another. She was institutionalized, NOT cured. And don't get me on her other alter "Bloody Mary".
I wish Bullseye was Daredevil's archenemy more over Kingpin
Why does Murdock continue to harass this simple spice dealer?
I'll argue all day with anyone who says the Kingpin was a ho-hum villain before Miller wrote him. Actually READ Amazing Spider-Man #50-52, 59-61, 68-70, 83-85, 163-164 and 197. he had a lot of depth contrary to popular belief. And he actually FOUGHT Spidey, not just hiring assassins. I consider him Spider-Man's 3rd best foe after Green Goblin and Doc Ock and a top 10 Marvel villain
Pretty sure that's not how you pronounce Chichester's name
...now here me out im just saying if blowing marys back out fixed her lets just give joker a guy dressed as batman and have thomas eliot make him look just like bruce
I hated this story when it first came out. Too fast and not satisfying enough, but I read it again recently and it isn't that bad.
What is this the daredevil channel now? I like the character but sheesh.
What, this is your first Darecember? Annual tradition that Mr. Draper takes this month to highlight all things Daredevil.
@@johnathonhaney8291 It is actually
The armor look. Easily one of the worst redesigns of a classic superhero
The Avengers redesigns would like a word.
good video but disliked it the second you said bing bong
Holy sweet God!!!!!! This sounds freaking terrible!!!!!!!!!!! I'm glad I never read Daredevil in the 90s. It seems that he was involved in just pure utter garbage story lines in the 90s writing crap
