- The Haiboxing 18858 & 18859 are great little starter, small-scale RC trucks.
There are even a few upgrades out there for them!
In this video, we do a full upgrade on our 1/18 RC monster truck!
Shocks: amzn.to/3eibfDY
Front CVDs: amzn.to/3bUtkEU
Rear drive cups: amzn.to/2QpqWxd
Metal hexes: amzn.to/2LNsYVF
I am really happy with the difference these parts made! Especially the shocks. Make sure to check the slow motion of how the stock shocks perform vs the ugprade - HUGE difference!
*Note: The provided links to the items recommended in this may be associate links. The great news about this: you pay the same price for the item, but I get a small kickback that helps me fund this channel!

Can't thank you enough. Even after 3 years, this video helped me find aftermarket parts. Cheers, sir!
Awesome! Glad this was helpful!
Your video helped tremendously. Thank you. I absolutely love this truck.
Glad I could help Chris!! Thanks for the kind words.
I'm thinking of purchasing this truck, so I'm glad you did this video. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Let me know if you have any questions.
They also have the 16889 - the 1/16 scale version of this truck. I like it a lot also, and the added size helps in some locations.
Literally got this car 3 days ago. And I'm so happy i found this video. Thanks so much for explaining everything 🙌🏾
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. I just bought 2 of these trucks for my grandson and me. Looking forward to using them and upgrading them too. New to rc and love your channel ! Now back to binge watching more of your videos.
Great! Glad this was helpful!
The shocks really made a huge difference.
Feel free to reach out if you have questions.
Same with me ^^ I bought one for my son at christmas - and it was love on first sight, so I bought one for mine too ^^
Great video! Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
I did not know they made upgrades for these cars, that’s for sharing as always love the content :)
They sure do! The shocks are a MUST.
what a very nice collection.
fully watched from South Korea
Thank you!
The shocks made a huge difference , no more bounce ! Thanks for vid !
Thanks for watching!
I was really happy with the difference the shocks made.
I've done all of this to mine as well. I love this little truck.
It really is a fun truck!
Thank You. I was looking at the 18858. Might make up my mind. Good Video Thanks again.
Glad I could help!
Nice video. Thank you my friend! Have a happy day!
Thank you for the support!
Just picked up one of these haiboxing trucks as my intro to the RC world. I wanted something better than what Walmart/Target had in stock but didn't want to spend too much as I'm just getting started. Thanks for doing the drop test and demonstrating the damping by the oil shocks. Huge help for me to understand.
Great! Glad to help!
Welcome to the RC world. Feel free to ask questions if you have them!
awesome! thanks for showing us, this bad boy definitely needs some upgrades
The shocks alone are certainly worth every penny!
Thank u 🙏🏽 this helps me so much and thank u for showing me how to do take it apart, I probably would of did something wrong and brake it my basher
Great!
I am very glad it helped!
Those are some nice upgrades for that little monster truck, awesome video!
Thank you! Agree - the shocks especially made a large difference!
@@RoadsideRC suspension makes the biggest difference on any offroad vehicle, RCs or real :D
Love your shirt man! 😁 Thank you for showing the comparison between both types of shocks on the same car together.
Ha! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video man, nice work 👍🏽
Thank you!
Hey Troy . This will help . My 16980sa t boned a stop sign with a 3s and broke he chassis and top cover for the gears . Learning lesson but I was glad parts were available on Amazon . I’m still in the 90 day parts coverage but I haven’t heard back just yet .
Typically, the parts coverage for 90 days won't cover user error - like hitting a sign - just FYI. That is usually more "manufacturer defect" type of situation.
This is some nice and good upgrades
They really are better for the truck!
Yeah
Nice 👍👍 I really like the beat too 👏
Thanks!
Thank you
You're welcome!
All the goodies thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! Good (early) morning to you!
@@RoadsideRC I'm a early type lol since I beat the cancer and got this tumor the whole sleeping thing went out the window lol if I get 2-3 hours a night I'm good to go but I'm use to it now lol anymore then 3 hours then I feel tired and groggy all day. With that being said good morning to you aswell Troy and thanks for the early morning content I enjoy it gives me something to look forward to
@@jebrc Thank you sir!
Nice upgrades 👍
Thank you sir!
Just received this exact truck in the mail last week! It's a blast out of the box but yesterday when bombing over some pine cones and small sticks it could barely stay upright😅
Also it cannot jump without doing an absolute nosedive 😅 so will definitely be doing this upgrade series as well. Only issue is they are currently out of stock on Amazon.
I have had a blast with this truck.
When jumping, you need to stay on throttle a little to keep the nose up.
@RoadsideRC Thanks for the tip! Certified newbie here😅
Nice little trucks I'm thinking about getting the new 2021 version it has all the upgrades done ,shocks ,diffs, etc. I've never had one of these little guys, looks cool
Do it! I have the one you are talking about (18859a) - it is a great truck.
Nice vid man very informative, I already put the shocks and what not on mine. Honestly though I was actually hoping this video would be an esc, and motor upgrade. I'm going to sub and follow along to see whether or not you end up doing one or anything else to this little thing. keep'em comin'
I really should do that! Making this brushless would probably be crazy! The only issue going brushless on this truck is cost. For the price of the ESC and motor....you could buy a whole truck!
@@RoadsideRC yeah, you're right. still i'll keep an eye out say you do, maybe a budget build for people who've bought it and are now lookin' to add a little pep.
Same I would love to see the budget truck brushless! Just bought the truck will be adding these upgrades looking for future stuff, and great vid!!!!
Great video thanks for posting it. These haiboxing 2020 rigs are so fun to bash around the yard with. The upgraded shocks i think could use a thicker shock oil. Hopefully you could do a video on that and what upgrade wheels and tires. Thanks
I'll consider it!
Thanks for the feedback
Hey so I just bought the same shocks for my 1/18 scale rc car called the sandy land and the fit and they work so well so thank a lot for this video.
Great! I hope it works well for you.
@@RoadsideRC they are working great.
@@RoadsideRC Also one little question have those shocks leaked at all for you?
Not that I have noticed....however they are cheap enough that it would not surprise me.
@@RoadsideRC True mine have a little oil on them and I don't think its leaking but I think oil is sticking to the pole thing and its getting on the shocks but other than that they seem to be working really well.
instructive !!!
Thank you!
Nice, I'm having a blast with mine but at full throttle sucker flies up into the air everytime it hits a small rock in the backyard. Think shocks are in order, great video!
I agree - sounds like shocks will help a lot!
Ordered 4 shocks but will have to wait 1 month. For a grown-up noob the blackzone stock is already an awesome truck but oil shocks will stop it bouncing. Made undreds of jumps in the living room, drove it in rough terrain with rocks and dirt. Also tall grass and moist leaves. Climbs dirt ramps with more than 45 degrees. Learn everything I could how to clean it with no water and as a home made motorbike Mechanics there is no rebuild task I can't make on the little truck. My local hob ie shop has spares for everything and that was the reason I bought this model (also under 90eur). I think is an excellent rc truck and throttle limitation on the remote is amazing for those with less skills or when using it indoors. Metal axles probably will make it slower eve. Though tougher for sure
Great!
Really glad you like this truck. It is fun for sure!
Thank you so much new subscriber your page and just order the shocks and drive shafts for mine hopefully it will improve upon it
It sure helped mine!
@@RoadsideRCI love how planted the shocks make the truck
Thanks for the great video! Do you know where I can get an 18t pinion that fits these things? I'd like yo find a metal spur and diff as well. I want to do a brushless upgrade to mine. I can't even figure out what mod the pinion is...
If you take the factory pinion to your local hobby store, they should be able to help identify it.
Pretty sure is it a 32p, but don't have it in front of me, so don't want to lead you wrong.
@@RoadsideRC Thanks for the reply!
Can you upgrade to larger wheels on the 18859a? For example can you use the 16889 wheels on the smaller unit? I just want to know if you can use 1/16 wheels on a 1/18 car. Would this degrade performance? I use mine in dirt primarily and thought larger wheels would be better. Thanks!
Two things to confirm:
1) is the hex the same size? I believe it is in this case.
2) will it out too much strain on the driveline, motor, esc? No way to know until you try. I believe it should be fine.
Hi. Could you recommend a tool kit that would make it possible to install these upgrades? Or would you recommend buying the parts, then buying individual tools?
I don't really see a comprehensive tool kit on the market...that is also quality enough to be worth buying.
I have pieced everything together for me.
A few things that I do highly recommend:
- MIP driver set: amzn.to/3wZeAeJ. You can get cheaper sets...just don't. These are great.
- A set of small pliers: amzn.to/3iCksp7
- I assume you already have a set of flat and phillips screwdrivers.
- Knife: amzn.to/2UFYwRV
- pick set: amzn.to/3iVwtpV
I hope this helps!
I m new in RC car driving... Can you tell us the part numbers for the new drive shaft replacement? I m not sure which one i should take for my 18858
Here are the front driveshafts:
amzn.to/3w35Ln9
I don't see the rear driveshafts in stock right now.
@@RoadsideRC Thanks :)
Do you know if there is a better esc and controller for this truck?
You can upgrade with regular hobby-grade controllers.
Example radio and receiver: amzn.to/369Ka1z
ESC: amzn.to/3CFSjaf
Servo: amzn.to/3IcO334
You will need to swap all of them out as one set.
Do these upgrades apply to the 18859a Brushless model? I’m also thinking about getting a heat sink for the motor but I’m not sure which or what to buy, since the run time on the battery is so long, especially using both back to back. Great video btw🤙
The "a" model already has all of these installed - you are good to go. Great choice.
Have you seen the ads on Amazon for a aluminum suspension parts?
Yes - stay away!!! You want plastic to absorb the impact. You don't want aluminum arms.
New to this. Do i need special kind of tools to use when upgrading the rc?
There isn't anything super specific to RC - just make sure you have some quality tools laying around. The screws are so small that a junk tool will strip them.
Here is my guide to tools I use: czcams.com/video/LCayvJUXI7g/video.html
Could you provide the part numbers for the front and rear drive shafts you used? Thanks!
Here are links to the parts:
Shocks: amzn.to/3eibfDY
Front CVDs: amzn.to/3bUtkEU
Rear drive cups: amzn.to/2QpqWxd
Metal hexes: amzn.to/2LNsYVF
@@RoadsideRC thank you!
Hello I just finished watching your video and it’s cool, can you help me out just started getting into rc cars just purchased the rampage 1:18 scale what size rims and tires can you use on it
Honestly, there are not many wheel and tire choices for this size vehicle. You can look at your local hobby store or online for 1:18 scale wheels with a 12mm hex. Make sure to measure to diameter of these (total height of the tires) to get something close.
This is such an awesome video! Thanks for all the great tips. I had just ordered mine off Amazon before watching your video. My only question is the link for the metal hexes are no longer available. Do you have any other recommendations or perhaps have a different link to some other metal hexes. Besides that. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks, glad it was helpful!
You can check the actual WLToys website, but honestly shipping will be awhile.
Perhaps just wait until they come back in stock? The factory plastic ones lasted a long time on mine.
Double-check. I think the stock plastic hexes actually have the area where the cross-pins could go. You might be able to get away with those until the metal ones are back in stock.
@@RoadsideRC
Awesome preciate it! Thanks for the quick reply as well. Cant wait to get mine on Thursday and do all these sweet upgrades!
Is there any upgrades to install brighter led lights on the truck?
There are a lot of different LED kits on Amazon. Most run on the same voltage, so you could splice them in.
hi, friend!!! I have one of these 16889 appro and it makes a vibration in the rear wheels, it's new and I can't return it, I think it's from bearings, this noise is made when holding the car with my hand and giving and leaving gas, it seems like drinks or axes, the truth is that it is not very rare. It is normal? has it happened to you? I don't think it's a differential, I disassembled it and lubricated it. Another question, I realized that this differential only has 2 pinions inside, the wltoys have 4. Thanks
I think this is mostly normal.
Drive it and have fun!
Just ordered myself the shocks. Thanks for the vid, very easy to see the massive difference with the stock shocks. By the way, what oil goes in those?
Honestly - I didn't even change it. Never even opened them up to look!
Silicone shock oil. Available at most hobby shops. If you’re 4x4ing around rock crawling etc like me you’ll probably want a 20 weight.
Hopefully these items come back onto Amazon. None showing currently
I'm sure they will, just give them some time.
Any ideas on the model number for the pinion? I’ll be upgrading too but the pinion has seen better days!
I am not 100% sure, but I believe it is a 13T, 32p pinion gear.
Similar to this one: amzn.to/3Lh7YRa
Or, you can get this grouping and possible change gearing: amzn.to/3guCmJw
@@RoadsideRC thank you so much! Really helpful 😊
So I just got this truck yesterday, I'm almost 30 so I want to switch the transmitter to a joy stick one. Any suggestions? I'm definitely thinking about getting the upgrades for the springs
Switching controller on this vehicle will be difficult.
The ESC & receiver are one unit, so you will be replacing many of the electronics if you want to change the controller.
@@RoadsideRC oof that's definitely a bummer. Are there Any rc cars that still come with joystick controllers that's similar to this rc thay you would recommend?
There really is not.
The joystick controllers are really limited to drones/planes/helicopters now.
The pistol-style radio is rather good, once you get used to it!
@@RoadsideRC alright thanks, I'll have to wait till these upgrades become available again. You've earned a sub from me my guy
Looking for a good quality aftermarket replacement battery for the 18859A. Any help is appreciated with links
Honestly, the truck doesn't pull enough amps to really worry much h about it. I just have multiple of the stock-ish batteries we use.
Like these: amzn.to/3ECvDHc
@@RoadsideRC thank you
I ended up ordering another since I like it so much and it was on sale but also ordered a car in fiber rlaarlo carbin fiber Omni . Maybe I should have ordered a traxxas to begin with but still nothing would have withstood that stop sign post with a 3s , lol 😂.
Ha! Yes - I think the trucks you have are just fine. Don't worry, the Traxxas isn't that much better.
Hi! I bought shocks from aliexpress, What type of oil goes in these shocks ?
This is a good oil to use: amzn.to/3NjD8Hh
i was thinking of getting a more powerful motor for mine. what would you suggest for a motor????
They offer a brushless setup for it.
Actually, if you look - there is now a 18859A. Comes with all of the upgrades already installed.
amzn.to/3fngkrJ
@@RoadsideRCthank you for the help
Do the shocks have a good sealing system?
They have not leaked on me yet...
can anybody tell me a good brush motor i can throw in one of these, love the vids trying to mod it to the max
They do make a brushless version of the truck now - going brushless would be a lot better than brushed.
The upgrade part numbers for the brushless setup are in the back of your manual.
@@RoadsideRC i have the other version of this rc the 2021 but with the green shell
The same to me Bro and also subbed 😁 👍🏽
Great Upgrade amazing 🤜🏽🤛🏻
Stay safe ✌️🏽 😊
Thank you!
Hello, can you tell me about a better motor for thise Rc car?
If you upgrade to brushless, you will need to replace all of the electronics.
Here is a kit that gets you started, but you will also need a new transmitter and receiver.
amzn.to/3rUv6vB
@@RoadsideRC Thanks, I have a brush Race Truck 18859!
Can you do a video on putting a cooling fan on
I can try!
Getting power for the fan might be a little tricky.
Do you maybe know a good distributor for these parts in Europe? :) btw - none of these articles are available any more in the us shop ;)
I am sorry, I am not aware of any shops in EU.
@@RoadsideRC Can you make a video how to make some repairs? For example if one of the wheels doesnt exactly stand in right position (after a little crash), what do you think could be the problem with it? Btw. i changed my shock absorbers too after watching your video and yes you are right the original ones are much too soft - worth every cent to change it :)
Hello shock link doesn't work anymore. Could you provide again or reference thank you
Thanks for pointing it up. Link updated.
Here it is for easy reference: amzn.to/3eibfDY
@@RoadsideRC Hello, that link didn't work either. I managed to get them elsewhere. Great video and recommendation. It's a world of difference. Shocks came fully oiled. They work great and the drive it's much better. Used on 1/8 scale HoSpeed Hurricane HS18322
Where can i get upgradeparts
I found them on either Amazon and/or directly on Haiboxing's website.
There are some links to these specific parts in the video description.
Can you upgrade the servos and the motor etc..
There is a brushless version of this truck. You can use the motor and esc from it.
@@RoadsideRC do you know if the stock remote will bind with the brushless esc? In other words, do you need to replace the remote when upgrading to brushless?
@Idontknowmargo! I never did the swap. But - I believe the brushless setup is not a ESC & receiver 2-in-1, so you would need to upgrade controllers or get a compatible receiver.
Amazon don't have the parts where can I get it ??
You can also get them directly from Haiboxing.
Your manual has the email and website listed.
@@RoadsideRC ok Thanks
What wheels are them thanks
They are the stock wheels.

I don't think so.

Nothing, as near as I can tell.
Lucky you got the out drive cups...I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t think your links are correct. Mind pointing me in the right direction?
Check this out - I believe this is the correct links. Drive cups and everything. amzn.to/2QpqWxd
Thanks for pointing out my mistake!
Here is a link for the rears with drive cups, but it doesn't show the shafts themselves: amzn.to/3wQHsa2
Thanks for the links...I couldn’t find em...any plans to go brushless and 3s in your rampage?
Glad they worked this time.
No plans to go brushless. I recently drove the 1/16 brushless from Hosim, and even on 2S it was too much power for the chassis. Truck became uncontrollable at full throttle. I'll do 3S on that one just for giggles (assuming the ESC can handle it) but it will just be a wreck-fest.
Awesome video thanks for sharing is this one of the trucks in the giveaway?
Thank you!
This is not one of the trucks in the current giveaway - but might be in the future!
